It's Fine Press Friday!

Among the several Chicago fine presses that came out to the Arts and Crafts movement was the Blue Sky Press, which ran from 1899 to 1906. Design, printing and business operations were undertaken by Alfred G. Langworthy, while art and literature were the purview of Thomas Wood Stevens and, until 1902, Alden Charles Noble. In his notable survey of the field, The Private Press (1983), Roderick Cave notes that:

In some respects the Blue Sky books reflect the work put out by the aesthetic publishers like the Bodley Head no less than Kelmscott work. Although undoubtedly derivative, their design was not slavish in its following a particular style, and the books they published remain charming examples of the taste of the period.

How Jaques Came into the Forest of Arden was published in 1901 by Blue Sky in a limited edition of 700 copies numbered and initialed by Langworthy. The text is by American author and journalist Elia W. Peattie (1862-1935), with illustrations by American illustrator and cartoonist Walter J. Enright (1879-1969). The selection this kind of text and illustration was characteristic of Blue Sky productions. Again, Roderick Cave:

[The] press produced competent if not especially distinguished work by contemporary writers as well as a number of standard texts, at a time when so many private printers' imagination stretched no further than another version of Sonnets from the Portuguese.

The book was printed on Van Gelder handmade paper with initials by American artist Harry Everett Townsend (1879-1941), hand-illuminated by Elia Peattie's sister Barbara Peattie.

I watched seasons 1-3 of boardwalk empire at such a pace that I was somehow unable to make notes for tumblr. this is always a good sign since it means I loved it, but I also usually want to comment on it. I'm definitely planning on doing that with season 4.

generally speaking though, I went on an emotional rollercoaster with this show. it feels like a less artsy (but still well made), less depressing (at least season 1) and a little more action fueled version of peaky blinders. even though boardwalk empire was first of course. I'm always surprised at how much I like gangster tv shows though?

character-wise I weirdly liked nucky the most at first bc he seemed like a decent guy who is just protecting those around him through some illegal schemes, but now… he got a lot more violent in season 3 and he acts like an asshole 90% of the time. I also loved his and margaret's (for some reason the name doesn't fit her at all imo, I've never felt that about a character before) romance at the beginning, even though the power dynamic was a little problematic from the get go. but I think after this season they make a better, bc more equal, match than earlier when they were still nice to one another bc they are both resentful and somewhat power hungry (even if margaret does it on a much smaller scale). maybe they'll find back together?

but my favorite character for sure is richard harrow. at first I thought he was too much of a sidekick, but then he finally got more depth. and even though he is literally a killer, he is probably the most decent person in this show. and we love to see him happy :)

I also started to like eli and van alden (!) this season. (maybe also bc van alden is very autistic coded.) rothstein and meyer lansky I kind of liked from the start. oh and a.r. and lucky luciano are lovers, you can't tell me otherwise.

ok that's it for now. I'm pretty excited about what's to come, even though some of the plot choices were a bit questionable (end of season 2 especially) and per usual, I spoilered myself a lot, so I already know which of my favorites will die…

How and why did Elvis go down hill so fast after the Aloha from Hawaii concert

ahh this is a really interesting question, thank you for the ask <3 !! also I’m sorry if I didn’t interpret this correctly and if you mean’t the immediate aftermath of the special, I kind of answered in terms of the long run 😭

now this might be an unpopular opinion but I don’t believe that Elvis actually ever went ‘downhill’ at a constant or steady rate

Many fans, biographers, and reviewers sort of see the Aloha special as ‘past the point of no return’ for Elvis, meaning they see it his last moment of “greatness”, or the last moment where he was truly on top

The Aloha special was no doubt a peak moment for Elvis, but I don’t definitely don’t view it as his “final truly great moment”. I also don't see the special as him reaching the top of the mountain and then next 4 years are him going down it. I see the special as one peak of many, in fact I think he continued to have peak moments up until his passing, which is why the suddenness of his death is so tragic because I don’t believe he was done. He was of course physically not well but not to the point that he wouldn’t have been able to overcome it if he had more time and proper care

Another reason that I can’t say he ever steadily declined is because that throughout his career, particularly in the 60s and 70s, Elvis had periods of highs and lows that often coincided with how his personal life was going i.e family, friends, girlfriends etc.etc

For example the tail end of the summer in 1976 was a particularly rough patch for Elvis. His health was declining, his relationship with Linda was on its’ last legs, his group was split (Dave, Red and Sonny had been fired), and Doctor Nick even stopped being his physician after a fallout had occurred and Doctor Elias Ghanem stepped in

Doctor Ghanem was even more neglectful in taking care of Elvis and as a result Elvis was loaded up on anti-depressants, sleeping pills, and other extremely debilitating narcotics. He was rendered almost completely incontinent. Thus resulting in one of Elvis’ worst tours yet, and one of his worst rated shows ever aka ‘Houston we have a problem’ which was taped on August 28th 1976

Reportedly Elvis was slurring and stumbling so badly on stage that several fans walked out, one reviewer even noted fans crying as they left

“People had witnessed the side effects from Elvis's medications during his performance in Houston. Elvis had taken Sparine (for depression), which contributed to muscle and speech problems. It knocked the bottom out of him, dropped his blood pressure. He couldn't do diddly-squat”

It was one terrible show/performance after the next and Elvis was pushing himself to the limits and suffering because of it. According to band members Elvis had to be convinced to go on stage because he was so worried about disappointing the crowd. He wanted to perform better but his body physically wouldn’t let him. It was so terrible that just after 3 days of Elvis being under Doctor Ghanem’s care, Doctor Nick was called back and began working again to regulate Elvis’ prescription use

And then on November 19th, 1976, Elvis met 20-year-old Ginger Alden, and to just say he had “improved” would be a massive understatement. He began performing like he hadn’t been for years, resulting in one of his best tours, and some of his best shows such as his New Year’s Eve performance on December 31st, 1976. And more than just his career/shows, Elvis’ mood had visibly lifted, he was out of his depression and he was much more optimistic for the future

So Elvis went from having one of his worst-rated concerts, to one of his best-rated concerts in just the span of a few months, which again proves to me at least that his “decline” wasn’t steady

When he was motivated and inspired, he could do incredibly great things, whether that motivation came from a single girl he wanted to impress in the audience or billions of people around the world like in the Aloha special

And this pattern can be seen throughout his career

Like in the 60s where Elvis would tend to let himself go a little bit between films and then when a script was given for his next picture, he would find the motivation to get back “in shape”, even reducing the amount of prescriptions pills he was taking in order to do so

But even the films eventually grew tiresome and Elvis didn’t find that motivation for his career again until the 68 comeback special. dontbeecruel breaks down the lead up to the special like Shakespeare I swear- please take the time to read it for yourself if you haven’t (it’s amazing) 😩 ⬇️

Another instance in the 70s where Elvis was able to recover from a low/downhill period and rise again was after his divorce with Priscilla. His saving grace, inspiration, and motivation this time came to him as Linda Thompson

The divorce undoubtedly caused was one of the lowest periods in Elvis’ life. He began taking pills and prescriptions that he had never had before such as Demerol and Dilaudid, his behavior became more erratic than ever, and he was in a deep depression, resulting in the decline of both his physical and mental health

It took him a while to recover but he eventually did, and I do honestly credit that to Linda’s presence in his life as she helped him move on

I guess that’s why it breaks my heart when people act like Elvis’ last great moment was at 38 in the Aloha Special, and then every year after that was just downhill. He was always singing his heart out as best he could, even towards the end, and again, if his career was managed in his best interest and if his doctors acted in his best interest, I believe he would have many more moments like the Aloha special, he just wasn’t given enough time to do so

“Wha—? No, I didn’t come from hell. I’m from a different century, smart guy.” Butch snarks, growing a bit impatient with the man (and also a little offended by the assumption); then it dawns on him why he would say such a thing. His stupid tail! Sometimes it felt so pointlessly attached that he forgot about it. “O-Oh—ya think… because I got…. naw, this’s… from somethin’ else completely. Unrelated… it’s a long story, actually.” He says with a nervous chuckle and a dismissive wave of his hand. “Let’s jus…. leave it at I was trapped in a magic book fer a real long time, alright? I’m workin’ on gettin’ rid’a this thing an’ th’ horns.” He grumbles that last part. “Dwight’s gonna help me, actually.”

The cowboy listens intently as Elias goes onto explain the magic realm. He had experienced his own share of magic beings but never from any realm besides the one in Darlene’s book. Maybe the Other Realm was connected to the Magic Realm he spoke of in some way… it only made sense. And if so, why the hell hadn’t Darlene mentioned it to him? He thought that they had told eachother everything.

“W-Well, I jus’ figured… ya might be older since yer a witch an’ all… not sure how they age.” The cowboy admits sheepishly with a slight shrug.

As Elias ponders whether or not he knows a Darlene, Butch almost immediately regrets asking… first because the man didn’t seem to be taking it seriously and then, well, because he gets an answer he doesn’t expect. His heart skips a beat and his eyes widen slightly as Elias describes how their heist went only a few years back…relatively recent. Which would mean that Darlene was still alive and well—if they were talking about the same Darlene, of course.

“—Alden? Darlene Alden? Are we talkin’ about th’ same Darlene?” Butch questions, a bit more frantic now. His demeanor’s shifted considerably, bordering desperate to know. If his old partner’s the one he’s truly speaking of, that would imply that the woman he once knew continued on with her life…without him. That she trapped him in that book for a reason besides wanting to protect him. That maybe, she was looking for an excuse to get rid of him. He really didn’t like that implication.

But how was it possible?

“She’s a witch—she’s got blonde fluffy hair, ‘bout yay tall? Amber eyes? Rosy cheeks?” Butch begins to describe her, hoping against hope for once that it’s not the same Darlene. There’s a tightening in his chest all of a sudden coupled with a sinking feeling deep in his stomach. He wouldn’t be sleeping a wink tonight.

“I work alone kiddo.” Elias says. It’s slightly untrue, Elias does work with plenty of people. But he has trouble keeping partners, mainly his own fault. If he hasn’t cheated them out of whatever price they were aiming for, he has no problem throwing them under the bus if it meant getting a leg up in the game. Elias just won’t mention that to Butch. If he was just some random guy that seemed naive enough to believe Elias, then maybe he wouldn’t think twice to run off with their treasure.

Or string him along until he no longer felt that Butch was useful. Fortunately for Butch, he’s Dwight’s friend. The fact that Dwight is sleeping comfortably in the other room while Butch roams around his apartment freely shows just how much the little witch trusts him. And if Elias is mean to Dwight’s friends, then Dwight will get all sad and then what is he to do? So Butch is spared.



“Back in your day?” Elias slightly narrows his eyes at Butch. He looks at his cowboy outfit once more…and the imp tail that swishes behind him. He’s starting to wonder that Butch is telling the truth about being a cowboy. If the impish tail tells him anything, Butch is no ordinary human. Hell, is he even human. “…so what? You got bored of Hell and decided to become a demon cowboy?”

At the question of the Magic Realm, Elias seems less interested. “Oh, it’s just the place where magic stems from. Think of this world…but you know. Magic. And elves, fairies, trolls, vampires, werewolves, literally anything that humans think is a fantasy. A majority them live there. Some live here in the human realm. I guess it’s preference.” Elias simply shrugs. He was fortunate enough to be born in the Magical Realm, so he doesn’t seem to understand the excitement over it.

“How old do I look?” Elias chuckles with a roll of his eyes. “I had Dwight when I was young, I’m barely hitting 40”

“Darlene?” Elias goes quiet as he ponders the name. Darlene….does he know a Darlene? He knows a Darian! And a Dante. But Dante and him aren’t on good terms. It’s better that he forgets Dante. But a Darlene? The little rat that runs on the wheel of the inner working of his brain goes into overtime as he tries to remember someone by the name of Darlene

“Like….just any witch named Darlene? You do know that could mean any witch? Well, Darlene is a weird name for a witch. Atticus is a good name. Selene is a good one too.” Elias jokes as he ponders the name a little anymore. Then it hits him like a train. “DARLENE! Haven’t seen her in like….maybe a couple of years ago?”

“It’s probably for the best we haven’t seen each other. I might have…tripped her when we were running out of a heist. Then took the loot for myself.” Elias grins. “Well…there’s a reason I work alone.”
