Madrid day 2- el rastro and day trip to Toledo-
Matt had heard from a coworker that Toledo was a fun day or overnight trip from Madrid and since Nali Man was also born in Toledo, OH, we decided to check it out. After a brief stop at the sprawling, Sunday only Rastro Market in Madrid to peruse various flea market wares, it was an easy 35 min train ride to Toledo, then a decent walk up to the top of the hill (Toledo is perched on a hill and moldy surrounded by a horseshoe bend in the river). Matt made us do a walking route he’d read about in Lonely planet and along the way we saw the museum of Santa cruz (which used to be a hospital, but now houses some cool el greco paintings and other old artifacts including some folding chairs from the 16th century). There was also a temporary Picasso exhibit that included a zone for kids to draw and Buggy recreated a Picasso masterpiece (you decide who drew it best). From there we had an outdoor lunch of pizza at kids request, then headed into the alcazar and the military museum it houses. We also saw lots of sword shops and learned Toledo is famous for making swords (also Marzipan). Nalli man thinks this must be why the Toledo, OH newspaper is called the “Toledo blade”.

Saturday, April 6 - Segovia to Toledo
We had all morning and into the early afternoon in Segovia, so we started out by going to the cathedral just when it opened at nine. As a result we pretty much had the place to ourselves. It is a massive late Gothic cathedral that soars high, and has the tallest tower in Spain, at 88 meters. It was begun in 1525, and completed in 1577, and is really stunning. We had expected just a cathedral, but the visit included a wonderful tapestry section, with tapestries illustrating the planets, which were much more earthly than the usual cathedral fare. There was also an exquisite display of art in the crypt area - no real "names", but still beautiful and well- displayed. There was also a room dedicated to a son of the king whose crypt had been opened about ten years ago, and the items that were found in a chest inside. There were only three bones, but also clothing and a shroud for the bones. They had an informative video of the DNA analysis of the bones and then the painstaking conservation of the clothing, which is now on display. When they had finished with all their analyses, they replaced the bones in the chest in the crypt, along with a copy of the research.
We had thought we would maybe spend a half hour in the cathedral, but wound up spending almost two hours, and the tour groups were starting to fill up the place. We then decided to check out of our hotel, where we could still leave our bags, and take a walk down and around the Alcazar end of the hill. It was lovely to be on a forest path for a while, away from stone streets, and hear birdsong and rushing water. On our way back up to the top, we passed a lovely community garden, complete with natty scarecrow.
We eventually rolled back to the aqueduct area, saw this little devil taking his selfie, and caught our bus back to the train station. We had plenty of time to change train stations in Madrid, but I'm glad this will be the last time. The next train we take will be back to Madrid, where we will stay until we fly out on Wednesday.
We arrived in Toledo, took a bus up to the old town, and checked into our hotel. Our room is small, but there is a communal terrace which was mostly empty where we watched the lights illuminate the Toledo cathedral. A beautiful evening, and tomorrow we have all day to explore.
