Week 12: Sevilla Weekend and Program Perks
Greetings! After a couple of months of seemingly endless cold and surprisingly rainy weather here in Madrid, summer is beginning to show in the city. It's been such a nice change: I spent a lot more time outside the past couple of weeks, and this week is looking even warmer (around 70 and sunny!).
This past weekend, CEA Capa, the study abroad program Michigan works through for UC3M, hosted one of their "Sevilla weekends". They paid for transportation there, housing, and several tours.

Although, we spent some time exploring the city and in the Alcazar, we mostly took advantage of the incredibly nice weather to walk around, swim, and spend time outside.

CEA Capa actually provides a wide range of activities that are included in the program cost. Already, I've taken a flamenco class and seen a flamenco show, and taken cooking lessons on traditional Spanish cuisine. In addition to this, they provide day trips to Segovia and Toledo, cities just outside of Madrid. I've had a lot of fun doing these activities so far, and would definitely encourage any future students to take advantage of these opportunities to go.
What's next:
I have an exam tomorrow morning for my Aerospace Controls class. I feel pretty okay on the material, but definitely need to study more tonight. Additionally, I spent this weekend in Mallorca for a friend's birthday. Stay tuned for the next blog to hear all about it!

Saturday, April 6 - Segovia to Toledo

We had all morning and into the early afternoon in Segovia, so we started out by going to the cathedral just when it opened at nine. As a result we pretty much had the place to ourselves. It is a massive late Gothic cathedral that soars high, and has the tallest tower in Spain, at 88 meters. It was begun in 1525, and completed in 1577, and is really stunning. We had expected just a cathedral, but the visit included a wonderful tapestry section, with tapestries illustrating the planets, which were much more earthly than the usual cathedral fare. There was also an exquisite display of art in the crypt area - no real "names", but still beautiful and well- displayed. There was also a room dedicated to a son of the king whose crypt had been opened about ten years ago, and the items that were found in a chest inside. There were only three bones, but also clothing and a shroud for the bones. They had an informative video of the DNA analysis of the bones and then the painstaking conservation of the clothing, which is now on display. When they had finished with all their analyses, they replaced the bones in the chest in the crypt, along with a copy of the research.
We had thought we would maybe spend a half hour in the cathedral, but wound up spending almost two hours, and the tour groups were starting to fill up the place. We then decided to check out of our hotel, where we could still leave our bags, and take a walk down and around the Alcazar end of the hill. It was lovely to be on a forest path for a while, away from stone streets, and hear birdsong and rushing water. On our way back up to the top, we passed a lovely community garden, complete with natty scarecrow.
We eventually rolled back to the aqueduct area, saw this little devil taking his selfie, and caught our bus back to the train station. We had plenty of time to change train stations in Madrid, but I'm glad this will be the last time. The next train we take will be back to Madrid, where we will stay until we fly out on Wednesday.
We arrived in Toledo, took a bus up to the old town, and checked into our hotel. Our room is small, but there is a communal terrace which was mostly empty where we watched the lights illuminate the Toledo cathedral. A beautiful evening, and tomorrow we have all day to explore.

Blog: Experiencias en España
Mapa:

Salimos a conocer y a comer.
¡Gracias! Espero y hayas disfrutado leerme
