Rhaetian Railway
Tumblr media
Tucked within the breathtaking landscapes of Switzerland and Italy, the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina Landscapes is more than just a means of transportationโ€”itโ€™s a masterpiece of engineering and a testament to human ingenuity in harmony with nature. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, this railway offers an unparalleled journey through some of the most spectacular alpine scenery in the world.
Built between 1904 and 1910, the Rhaetian Railway consists of two iconic lines: the Albula Line and the Bernina Line. These routes were designed to overcome the challenging terrain of the Alps while preserving the natural beauty of the region. The result? A network of intricate tunnels, viaducts, and bridges that seem to defy gravity.
The Landwasser Viaduct, with its elegant arches towering above a dramatic gorge, is perhaps the railwayโ€™s most famous landmark. Itโ€™s an awe-inspiring sight that perfectly captures the fusion of human achievement and natural splendor.
The railway links the Swiss canton of Graubรผnden with the Italian region of Tirano, connecting isolated alpine communities and fostering cultural exchange. From quaint Swiss villages like Filisur and Samedan to the Mediterranean charm of Tirano, the journey is a celebration of diversity.
The Rhaetian Railwayโ€™s routes traverse some of the most stunning landscapes in Europe. The Albula Line winds through dense forests, deep valleys, and charming mountain towns, while the Bernina Line climbs to dizzying heights, offering views of glaciers, snow-capped peaks, and shimmering alpine lakes.
At its highest point, the Bernina Line reaches 2,253 meters (7,391 feet) at the Ospizio Bernina, making it one of the highest railways in Europe. In the summer, the vibrant greens of the meadows contrast with the icy blues of the glaciers, while winter transforms the region into a magical snow-covered wonderland.
Tumblr media
UNESCO recognized the Rhaetian Railway for its exceptional combination of engineering and natural beauty. The siteโ€™s inscription highlights its innovative design and the way it harmoniously integrates into the Alpine landscape. Itโ€™s not just a railway; itโ€™s a cultural and historical treasure.
Riding the Rhaetian Railway isnโ€™t just about getting from point A to point Bโ€”itโ€™s an experience in itself. Whether youโ€™re aboard the panoramic Bernina Express, with its large windows designed to showcase the scenery, or a more traditional train, every moment of the journey is filled with wonder.
The railway is a paradise for photographers. From the dramatic curves of the Montebello Curve, where trains pass against a backdrop of the majestic Morteratsch Glacier, to the serene shores of Lago Bianco, every frame is postcard-perfect.
Whether youโ€™re a railway enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of the Alps, the Rhaetian Railway offers a journey like no other. Itโ€™s a chance to immerse yourself in the majesty of nature while marveling at the ingenuity of the past.
The Rhaetian Railway isnโ€™t just a train ride; itโ€™s a journey through history, engineering, and some of the most beautiful landscapes on Earth. Itโ€™s a reminder that travel is about more than destinationsโ€”itโ€™s about the experiences along the way.๐Ÿšžโœจ

Railway asks: 1, 5, 7?
Questions here
1 Favorite Railway Station
This may be controversial, but Iโ€™m picking Kรถln Hauptbahnhof (Cologne Main Station). Iโ€™ve spent so much time there taking pictures of trains, it has a beautiful (if awkward for trains) location, thereโ€™s always something going on there. Yes, itโ€™s far from perfect, the famous curve is awkward, it is way too small both for the numbers of trains and passengers through it, and parts of it just feel a bit shoddy, and the amazing beautiful book store is no more, now relegated to a normal tiny station store. But still, as the start point for longer journeys for me for many years (thereโ€™s not that many places that Aachen has direct connections to), it has a special place in my heart.
5 Favorite Railway Company
HSB, the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen, the steam powered narrow gauge railway in the Harz mountains, where I grew up. To be fair, I didnโ€™t grow up right next to the line, I probably visited it way too little all things considered. But it has beautiful steam locomotives and itโ€™s basically home.
7 Most beautiful train route Iโ€™ve taken
Bernina Express (Chur-Tirano). Most rail lines in Switzerland are great, but the combined Albula and Bernina lines are something else. The amazing sights right up to the glaciers, the famous infrastructure (Landwasserviadukt and circle bridge of Brusio alone), the picturesque sights, the stark views above the tree line, the tiny towns it goes through in the Italian-speaking section, itโ€™s just amazing.
Why didnโ€™t I pick the Glacier Express, which is more famous and its route partially overlaps the Bernina Express? Honestly mostly because I travelled on it last in 2009, and I was on the Bernina Express just a few months ago, so itโ€™s more fresh in my mind. But both are great and world class.

Connecting Communities: Exploring San Benedetto del Trontoโ€™s Bicycle and Pedestrian Pathways
San Benedetto del Tronto, a picturesque coastal town in the Marche region of Italy, boasts an extensive network of bicycle lanes and pedestrian paths that seamlessly connect various parts of the community. These routes not only promote sustainable transportation but also offer residents and visitors a unique way to experience the town's natural beauty and cultural landmarks.
Bicycle Lanes:
The town features approximately 15 kilometers of dedicated bicycle lanes. A prominent route is the "Profumo di Mare" (Scent of the Sea) path, which stretches for 11 kilometers along the coastline, passing through the urban area and the stunning Riserva Naturale Regionale Sentina. This path connects with the Abruzzo cycle route, providing a continuous ride to Ascoli Piceno.
Recent developments have expanded the cycling infrastructure:
Ponterotto Area: A new cycle path runs along the Albula stream, extending to the Statale Adriatica and via Gino Moretti, leading cyclists towards the town center.
Ragnola Zone: In the streets of Mattei and Rubicone, a path connects the via Mattei roundabout to an existing lane parallel to the railway embankment.
Pedestrian Paths:
San Benedetto del Tronto also offers numerous pedestrian paths that highlight its scenic landscapes and cultural sites. The promenade, lined with iconic palm trees, provides a serene environment for walkers, with views of the Adriatic Sea. Additionally, the Riserva Naturale Sentina features trails that allow visitors to explore its diverse ecosystems and observe local wildlife.
These interconnected networks of bicycle lanes and pedestrian paths not only enhance mobility within San Benedetto del Tronto but also encourage a healthier, more active lifestyle among its residents and visitors. Whether you're cycling along the coast or taking a leisurely stroll through natural reserves, the town offers a harmonious blend of urban and natural experiences.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  A trip on the Glacier Express is one of the worldโ€™s best-known railway journeys. For nearly 90 years, traveling on the "worldโ€™s slowest express train" has been one of the most thrilling - and comfortable - ways to discover the Alps. The journey begins in chic St. Moritz, birthplace of the Alpine winter vacation - in winter, of course. Here, Hans Peter Danuser gives us a blast on his "alphorn,โ€ a famed local instrument. In the 1980s, the former spa director of St. Moritz used this very horn to promote the Glacier Express in New York. After pulling out of St. Moritz, the train travels through the Albula Tunnel. On the other side, the train rumbles down to Thusis on the Albula Line, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Harmoniously embedded in the landscape, the route is considered the showpiece of the railway era. Several spiral tunnels help the train manage the 1,000-meter hike in altitude. On the way up to Bergรผn, passengers might even start feeling a bit dizzy! Finally, the train passes the "most beautiful place in Switzerlandโ€, the Lai de Palpuogna mountain lake. The Glacier Express then makes its way slowly towards Chur, via Switzerlandโ€™s most famous railway bridge, the Landwasser Viaduct. The spa town is a great place to learn about the meaning of the word "Waschweibโ€ - literally, "washerwomanโ€, colloquially, "gossipโ€.

Landwasser Viaduct, Filisur
the viaduct was built between 1901 and 1902 by Mรผller & Zeerleder for the Rhรคtische Bahn /ย Rhaetian Railway, which still owns and uses it today. A signature structure of the World Heritage-listed Albula Railway, it is 65 metres (213 ft) high, 136 metres (446 ft) long, with one end leading directly into the Landwasser Tunnel.
A lookout for the bridge can be reached by a path from the Filisur Station.
