War: An Earth Odyssey

One of the finest films of all time, “Apocalypse Now” had a production experience that is now just as legendary as the film itself.

Despite the theatrical cut (which took years to achieve) being the most commonly known version of the film, I highly recommend the “Redux” cut (which is essentially the True Original cut of the film).

The original cut, a.k.a. “Apocalypse Now Redux” is a Complete Masterpiece. The redux cut is more of a complete thought and is much more cohesive as a story. It’s an absolutely powerful film, adapted from a book entitled “Hearts of Darkness” (initially told within the backdrop of El Dorado rather than Vietnam & Cambodia).

“Apocalypse Now” is Coppola’s greatest work of art. The film has the greatest (and my favorite) performances of both Martin Sheen & Marlon Brando (both being the epitome of true artists). Brando having a performance so powerful he works as a force of nature within the shadows of his own madness & evil (a living work of performing art at it’s finest).

Also, not to mention Robert Duvall in his finest on-screen performance (and my personal favorite alongside “Network” & “Falling Down”, respectively).

“Apocalypse Now” is a perfect masterpiece that tells, not only a tale of a U.S. Military Colonel gone rogue with the megalomaniacal madness (of his own God-complex) amidst the tragedy of war, but an epic war-time odyssey of madness itself.

“Apocalypse Now” is my 5th Favorite Film of ALL Time (tied with “Full Metal Jacket”, and “Howard The Duck”).

Am 31.12.1918 dirigierte Arthur Nikisch in der damaligen Alberthalle des Kristallpalastes unweit des Hauptbahnhofes in Leipzig die Neunte Sinfonie von Ludwig van Beethoven. Das Konzert begann um 23 Uhr, damit exakt zum Jahreswechsel Friedrich Schillers “Ode an die Freude” erklingen konnte. Nach Beendigung des Ersten Weltkrieges sollte Beethovens und Schillers bewegende Friedensbotschaft die Menschen mit Hoffnung erfüllen.

Dies begründete eine Tradition, alljährlich am Silvesterabend Beethovens Neunte Sinfonie in Leipzig aufzuführen, die nach Beendigung des Zweiten Weltkriegs fortgesetzt wurde und seit 1978 im Fernsehen übertragen wird.

Es kann keine schönere Botschaft zu Beginn eines neuen Jahres geben als Schillers “Alle Menschen werden Brüder” in Beethovens unsterblicher Komposition.

Der Dirigent dieser Aufführung ist Gewandhauskapellmeister Professor Kurt Masur (1927 - 2015), der am 09.10.1989 das durch die Niederschlagung der friedlichen Demonstration in Leipzig befürchtete Blutbad durch sein couragiertes Handeln und durch den ganz persönlichen Einsatz seines immensen Renommees, der in der Verlesung des “Aufrufs der Leipziger Sechs” (“Wir bitten Sie dringend um Besonnenheit, damit der friedliche Dialog möglich wird.”) über den Leipziger Stadtfunk gipfelte, verhinderte.

This Saturday 11th November, the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at Royal Albert Hall, payed tribute to the Armed Forces Community and all those that have served and sacrificed from Britain and the Commonwealth.

This year were joined by currently serving personnel and veterans from the @britisharmy, @royalairforceuk and @royalnavy as pay tribute all those who selflessly put the safety and protection of others before themselves.
