ok so basically it starts with a good ol intro for our protagonist; emira! she is a cake seller or smth. like a baker who sells in a bakery or whatever. you get it now right

dw she got saved by prince cedric tho <33333 no there is no canonical romance here if there is it's so so soooo not obvious but it's implied somewhat. it's just that the romance isn't between emimi and ced. anyways they talked for a bit and then emira brought up how they should do smth instead of hiding in some ugly ass cave forever

Since all my Ocs are queer in some way I figured this is a great post to just share what part of the lgbt community they belong to!

Albert is bisexual! (and a disaster) Would describe himself as aromantic if he knew what that was. So is Leo, both of them not having a preference towards the gender of their partners.

Cedric is gay! (a realization which took a lot of soul searching...) Nicky is gay as well! Masc preference. Probably a conservatives idea of a gay person.

Albert's sister, Cecile, is lesbian! (though she's extremely closeted) In a different life she might have explored her gender a little more, in this one she treats it with detached acknowledgement. So, like, kinda non binary but kinda not?

Willow was a lesbian too and unlike Cecile, she was out. :)

And lastly, Darcy is bisexual too! (but in a way like how he doesn't care whether the chicken he's eating is male or female. It's just a body.)

Figured I'd omit the characters I haven't introduced yet, so stay tune for that sometime later!

Let's talk about the "Fenian brotherhood" theory !! :D

Firstly, in case you don't know about it, please go read the theory that our!Ciel's birth name might be Fenian/Fionn/Finnian by @azuresins. It is incredibly relevant to what I'm about to explain next !

TBH, I don't really care about discovering our!Ciel's birth name. However, I truly enjoy this theory and I think it makes a lot of sense, because I absolutely agree with the idea of Vincent supporting (secretly or not) Irish independence, turning him into a political enemy of Queen Victoria...

...which could be very much why he ended up dead.

This theory comes from a private convo with my friend, @dorkshadows and I'll sum up their thoughts (and some of mine) below the cut !

First of all, while we think Claudia, Vincent's predecessor, may have been a personal enemy of Victoria because of whatever happened when Albert died in 1861, Vincent strikes us more as a political enemy precisely because of Brown's comment in ch108.

After all, if our!Ciel, who just managed to thwart their plans of getting the sulin gas, is "more like his father everyday", then it makes sense that Vincent "got in the way" of some of Victoria & JB's war/political plans too. >_>

Now, about the Fenian Cycle book: it was an important symbol for Irish independence and the Fenian Brotherhood that started in the 19th century before it got dissolved in 1880. To quote Wikipedia:

"The Fenian Brotherhood traced their origins back to 1790s, in the rebellion, seeking an end to British rule in Ireland initially for self-government and then the establishment of an Irish Republic. The rebellion was suppressed, but the principles of the United Irishmen were to have a powerful influence on the course of Irish history."

But how would Vincent even get involved with it and why?

In the theory that OC's name is Fenian/Finnian, @azuresins mentioned that maybe it's all related to Cedric K. Ros having Celtic origins. Since we do have one sketch by Yana of one twin bringing the Fenian Cycle book to the Undertaker (the most likely candidate for Cedric K. Ros)...

...it might indeed be a partial answer.

There is another possibility though, entirely thought by @dorkshadows, which is that Rachel (and Ann) might have been of Irish origins too.

After all, a common stereotype for Irish people in many stories is red hair and it's hard to forget that it was a very distinctive characteristic of Ann, Rachel's sister !

In fact, one of their first interactions is Vincent telling Ann to be proud of that hair, which we were told she inherited from her dad, the twins' maternal grandfather.

So Vincent might have not just been talking about Ann's hair color in that scene, but more specifically about her taking more pride in her Irish origins. Obviously though, Dalles/Durless aren't very Irish names, but it is possible that their original family name got anglicized into a more traditionally English name.

In any case, Vincent met Rachel and Ann after already knowing their father :

So it's possible that Vincent was, as the Watchdog, investigating Lord Durless as a nobleman with Irish lineage and possible ally of the Fenian Brotherhood. After all, to quote this article, "the Fenians in England and the British Empire were a major threat to political stability". Then Vincent met and fell in love with Rachel, thus deciding to support the Brotherhood instead.

I'd add that Vincent supporting such a cause simply makes sense, considering that the Phantomhive family, too, might have been burdened by the Watchdog's duty generations ago, because of their "different" lineage (full theory here). On top of that, if you add the possibility that Cedric/UT also was of Celtic origins (many decades or centuries ago) and that Vincent knew Claudia's death was Victoria's fault, it only makes sense that he'd eventually politically antagonize the Queen (both for his parents' sake and for Rachel's).

@dorkshadows also pointed out that, to this day, we don't know if the twins' maternal grandfather is alive or dead in canon : he was important enough to be mentioned in Red's flashback but has been missing from the narrative ever since. Timeline-wise, he could be dead, especially since we never saw him in the Blue Memory arc (our!Ciel's flasback), but we never know with Yana (look at Claudia being hinted in panels ever since the circus arc and probably being incredibly relevant), so it's worth keeping in mind.

Then, moving on to ch132 we know that, when the twins were born, Rachel is the one who named them.

Coincidentally (read: it's probably not a coincidence xD), ch132 had the cover with Vincent reading the Fenian Cycle book to the twins and it's also the chapter in which Vicar Rathbone casually says that one twin/both twins (it's deliberately ambiguous in Japanese) have a name that is "rare for England" :

Many fans, myself included, thought that "Ciel" was the name being discussed there, but maybe they were actually talking about our!Ciel's celtic birth name ! To quote @azuresins, in that case that'd basically mean that, in that scene above, "Vincent said to an ENGLISH PRIEST [...] that people of Celtic origin deserved freedom, and to be treated better and that it probably was soon to come".

No wonder that Vicar Rathbone would immediately change the topic lmao ! xD

It is also very meaningful that Rachel decided to give the "Fionn/Fenian/Finnian" name to our!Ciel ("the spare"), as if to emphasize that he was free to make his own path in life, as the second son, unburdened by earldom. Choosing such a meaningful name might even be a parallel to Vincent's own situation with Frances as his spare, since both also have names with a meaning relating to victory and freedom.

Another important detail, as @azuresins already explained here, is that Fenian Cycle is also a tale of revenge and that our!Ciel parallels Fionn big deal, making it all even more relevant. And maybe Yana left other hints in her artworks too...

Finally, historically the Fenian Brotherhood officially got dissolved around 1880 (the twins were 5 years old), but it's always possible that, in Kuroverse, Vincent managed to make it thrive secretly as the Watchdog. The Fenian Brotherhood caused several incidents, including after 1880 (they assassinated a British Chief Secretary in 1882), so it wouldn't be impossible that the Queen eventually found out that Vincent didn't properly take care of them, because he was supporting them.

And when she found out? Well, she branded Vincent a political enemy and we know the rest (the household was massacred in 1885 and the killer most likely received help from real!Ciel, more details in the real!Ciel mastermind theory hehe).

The idea that Vincent ultimately became a political enemy of Victoria because he fell in love with Rachel makes their death...

...even more emotional to me, since Rachel probably died trying to protect Vincent. T_T

TL;DR that's the Fenian Brotherhood theory: because they supported an Irish rebellious group that wanted freedom, Vincent & Rachel were branded political enemies of Victoria and she & JB plotted their deaths, which led in happenstance to the RCMT.

Ok so I spent like the whole day throwing these together, but here's a general overview and I'll go into more specifics after them

(the relationship chart is a mess and will probably change but it's a general idea)

Some notes on Maisie! She's described as a young girl but even in the Victorian era you had to be at least 18 years old to do jury duty, so she's 18, I would make her younger but come on we've got to have at least a little bit of historical accuracy here :)

The additional sibling connections with Miri and Edward are mostly based on vibes. I already had a headcanon that Albert was the oldest of a lot of siblings and Stereoscope Juror both looks similar and acts a bit similar to Albert so he fitted rather nicely. Miri looks kinda similar to Jezaille so they're sisters now. The reason they don't share surnames is due to a backstory that's way more focused on Jezaille but all that's really relevant is that Miri was very young when she was adopted by a friend of her mother and doesn't remeber Jezaille very well.

Some descendant headcanons! These are mostly focused on plvsaa as those characters make a bit more sense being related in my eyes.

Lettie Mailer is related to one of the Harebraynes (I haven't yet decided who)

It was 8 o'clock in the morning and both Gwen and Bruce stood in Gwen's kitchen yet again. Gwen stood at the phone waiting for an answer and Bruce sat at the table. elbow sat on top with his head presses against his palm, as his leg bounced up and down anxiously. Finally someone answered.

"Denver police department. This is Barbara how may I help you?"

"Hi this is gwendolyn blake again, is detective walker, and detective wright there?" Gwen asked. Barbara sighed lightly before Gwen heard the light tape of the keyboard before she replied back "yes ma'am they are I'll transfer you to them now." After a few more seconds Gwen heard detective wrights voice on the other line.

"I think I know where the grabber lives" she said. Instantly the detective asked where "7741 cherry street" Gwen replied.

Once she hung up the phone both kids were off on their bikes towards the house. Peddling as fast as their feet could take. Faster, and faster, and faster until the cherry street sign came into view. Just as quick as they pulled into the street so did a few police cars and an ambulance.

I sighed as I leaned my head against Vance's shoulder. "You alright?" He muttered, I nodded "yeah...yeah I guess" I replied. Then we heard the large metal door begin to open. The door had been left open that day, as a part of alberts game he played. I just assumed it was albert at first until the door opened entirely to reveal my father standing behind it. His eyes were widened as he stared at vance and I.

"Holy shit" he muttered, "holy shit, holy shit" my bottom lip wobbled as I pushed myself up off of the mattress and onto my feet. "Daddy?" I was free, he would call the police and they'd lock albert up for life. I'd go back up to Durango and live with my mother, and maybe possibly come back to visit bruce. I sprinted over to him and wrapped my around around his torso. "Please call the police help us he's gonna kill us if you don't" I whispered as tears fell down my cheeks. "I-I knew he was hiding something down here" dad muttered as he rubbed at my back. "Please hur-" then I screamed as my dad collapsed in my arms. An axe now plunged into his head. "Dad..daddy oh my god" I cried as I watched as blood pooled out of my dads lifeless body. "You see what you did?" Albert said staring down at me. "This is all your fault you made me kill my brother."

I cried out as Albert pulled the axe out of my dad head and began to stalk towards me. I pushed myself back, scooting away. Whimpering, almost begging vance to help. But he didn't he just sat there staring up, almost frozen still. Albert kneeled down next to me dropping the axe before wrapping his hand around my neck. I cried out and lungs burned. "St-stop" i muttered out as Albert pushed me onto the wall closest to the door. He pulled out a small pocket knife and pressed it against my abdomen. I trembled in fear "Let go" I cried out as I pulled at his hand wrapped around my neck. "V-vance" I cried, I could see vance behind alberts shoulder. Vance stood up walking over towards Albert and I. My lungs burned as I tried to breathe. His hand tightening around my throat as I gasped, tears building up in my waterline. Vance grabbed both of alberts shoulders pulling him down as a random burst of strength helped me pull my leg up and knee albert right in the crotch. Right before he let go the knife plunged through my skin. I cried out as I scrambled to my feet pressing my hands to my stomach as Albert cried out in pain. Albert groaned out as I watched vance straddle albert and punch him repeatedly in the face.

Blood poured out of alberts nose as he laughed. Vance pushed himself up off of Albert eyes widened, fists still clenched. “You’re tough kid, you remind me of a younger me” Vance scoffed as he breathed heavily. “I’m nothing like you.” Albert groaned as he wiped his nose free of the blood and wiped it onto his shirt before sitting up. “Really?” Albert raised his eyebrows as he stood up. He stalked towards us. I took a step back with every step forward he took. “The way you protect y/n reminds me of how I protect my ‘friend’ when I was younger.” Albert was finally close enough to me to the point I was pressed against the wall. “She was just about y/n’s height dark hair eyes that would light up the dark sky.” Vance tried to step between albert and i but that just ended up with vance being shoved. Vance groaned as he hit the floor with a thud. “But he took her away. And god dammit I won’t let you do that too.”

Albert placed his hand under my chin pushing it up so I was making eye contact with me. “Dawn was mine, but he took her away. now y/n’s mine, and god dammit I won’t let you or that asshole Bruce yamada take her.” I squeezed my eyes shut as I felt alberts breath against my cheek. I felt alberts lips press against my cheek. I opened my eyes quickly staring over at vance begging for help. Tears well up in my eyes. I squeezed my eyes shut yet again letting a few fall down my cheeks as I felt alberts lips trailing closer and closer to my lips. “Stop” I cried trying to push him away, “stop it, stop it please” I said before using all my strength to push him off of me. Albert fell on his ass right in front of me. I didn’t waste anytime sprinting away from him. Turning the corner towards the bathroom. I heard alberts heavy footsteps behind me. I jumped across the hidden hole and grabbed onto the cord pulling it so it tightened up. Albert was right behind me so he instantly tripped falling into the hole. The loud snap of his ankle causing me to squeeze my eyes shut and Albert to let out a scream. I got up and grabbed the toliet tank lid and raising it above my head. “I-I thought you loved me y/n”

“Not anymore” I whispered before bringing it down over his head. Blood splattered over the walls, me, everything in at least a 3 to four foot radius. I looked up to see vance standing there eyes widened. I quickly looked back down at alberts body before raising it back over my head.

I brought the lid down onto his head over and over. “Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you” i muttered everytime I brought the lid down onto his head. I knew he was dead, but I needed closer, billy, griffin, and Vance did too. He needed to be dead. And I needed the proof of his mush of brain left all over me and the walls. “Y/n?” Vance whispered breaking me out of my murderous State. I dropped the lid letting it shatter on the ground. “Let’s go.”

I nodded stepping around my uncles dead body and towards vance. Once I was right in front of him I engulfed him in a hug. Wrapping my arms around his neck and burying my bloody face into his shoulder. Sobs emitting from my throat. Vance akwardly wrapped his arms around my torso as he slowly rocked us side to side. “It’s over” i muttered.

“It’s over” Vance replied before I pulled away. I stared down and wiped my tears before looking up at vance. “Let’s go” he nodded, we both walked back into the main basement area. I avoided looking at my dads body as we walked past and towards the stairs. I just couldn’t look, I didn’t think I could mentally take it. We both walked up the stairs and through the empty house and to the front door. Vance opened the front door revealing the glass door. I looked around for Samson normally just opening one of the doors would summon him.

Just like clockwork Samson arrived barking up a storm. “Hurry” I whispered as I watched vance take the lock in his hands. I stuck my hand out letting samson smell in, let him recognize the sent. Albert had ways of calming samson down sometimes he’d just shout at him but sometimes if Samson finds you familiar just sticking your hand out letting him smell you he’d sit and calm down. But he’d only do it for albert and I. Not my dad.

Samson turned around trotting back to his spot on the couch lowering his barking.

Then the lock fell the the ground with a thud. Vance pushed the door open and we both walked out. Sat across the street pressed against the fence was bruce, and Gwen. More and more police cars pulled up to the house all piling into the house across the street. Bruce lifted his head up in response to Gwen tapping his shoulder. His eyes widened as his eyes landing. He quickly stood up and sprinting towards me, tears building up in his eyes. “Oh my god y/n. I thought I lost you” he whispered into my shoulder as he engulfed me in a hug. I sighed as I wrapped my arms around him. I watched as a emt walked up to vance who stood a bit behind me. He said something to Vance I couldn’t really comprehend my thoughts were racing. Bouncing off my brain and ricocheting back. And then the emt escorting Vance towards the ambulance. Everything, every sound, thought was echoed faded. I didn’t think I was going to make it this far. Was I dreaming was that why everything waa begining to sound faded. I hoped, prayed that I wouldn’t wake up. Hoped it wasn’t just some made up dream, so fantasy I was having as I died.

“This is real right?” I asked as I clung to Bruce, I didn’t want to risk letting go and never seeing him again. “I hope so” he whispered back tightening his grip around me. We both pulled away and Bruce looked down at a large bloody patch covering the bottom of his white shirt. “Woah, are you alright?” He said his eyes softened as his face contorted into a worried expression. “I’m fine” i said as I lifted my shirt a bit to see a gaping wound in my stomach. “No, no you aren’t come on let’s get you some help” Bruce said grabbing my hand dragging me towards the ambulance that vance sat in, a blanket wrapped around him as the emt worked on a few of Vance’s wounds some recent some old, some major some minor. But he definitely needed hospitalization from the look of a large infected wound on the side of his torso. “She’s bleeding do you think you can fix her up?” Bruce asked. The emt turned around and nodded “one second sit right there kiddo” he said. I nodded and took a seat next to vance while Bruce took a seat on the concrete. Staring up at me concern still lingered over him. The emt dabbed at Vance’s wound before saying. “We’re probably gonna need to take you to the hospital don’t think we can treat it here” before taking a large enough bandage and covering it so it wouldn’t get worse. Then he turned to me. “We’re ya bleeding from kid?” The emt was younger probably in his mid twenties. He had blonde neatly styled hair and brown eyes. I lifted up my shirt to reveal the wound. The emt sighed before grabbing the alcohol wipes and wiping the left over blood from the wound. I winced and squeezed as eyes shut as the alcohol entered my wound.

“Mom?”

I looked over to see vance staring up at a lady. Same blonde hair and blue eyes so I knew it was his mom. She had tears in her eyes as vance stood up and ran to her. She wrapped her arms around him tightly hugging him. “Vance, oh my god. I thought you were gone” she said as she cradled his face in her hands. “I missed you momma” he whispered to her.

“We won’t be able to treat this here kid we’re gonna have to take you to the hospital”

“C-can I come with her?” Bruce said standing up. “Sorry kid you can’t only parents or guardians.”

I sat in my hospital room. Bruce laid on the couch while I stared up at the tv watching the news. I few knocks on the door pulled me out of my trance. “Come in?” I said assuming that it was a nurse coming to check on me, since I did have some blood loss. I heard the door open as I turned my head back towards the tv. The police had tried to contact my mom but all they got was my stepdad telling them she was supposed to be here. They wouldn’t tell me what they found in the basement across the street either. “Hey” I turned my head to see Vance. He was showered now and dressed in new clean clothes. “Hey” I whispered as he walked towards me. He pointed towards the spot next to me and I nodded scooting over so he could sit. He climbed up onto the bed and sat next to me. “So weres you mom?” I asked, “she’s out in the waiting room passed out” he whispered laughing lightly. I smiled to myself, he was even more prettier all cleaned up no blood, or dirt. “Did they get a hold of yours?” He asked. I shook my head staring down at my hands. “Just my stepdad.”

We sat in silence for a few minutes taking in the weird feeling of not having to worry anymore. Being with each other but not having that underlying dread of not making it out. “Hey Vance” I whispered, I don’t know why but I just randomly had the guts to tell him. Tell him I liked him even when I wasn’t even certain that I did. “Hm?” He hummed “I have something to tell you but don’t be mad at me ok?”

He furrowed his eyebrows as he stared at me. “I’m not fucking promising anything” he said. I sighed as I stared at my jittery hands. “Just fucking say it” I nodded and looked up at him. “I think I like you” he stared at me eyes widened, my breath hitched as I squeezed my eyes shut. I fucked up.

“No, no-no you can’t” he whispered.

“What?” My eyebrows furrowed, my voice laced with confusion. “You can’t like me you just can’t.”

“If you don’t like me its f-“

“It’s not that I don’t fucking like you” he said as he scooted away from me. “It’s just that you can’t, I’m me. What if I hurt you”.

“You’re not a monster vance” I whispered as I took his hands in mine. “Everyone in this town thinks I am” he muttered as tears filled his eyes. “I-I’m just a kid, and everyday, everytime I walk by anyone they flinch or walk faster”

“I’m violent y/n, I’ve almost killed people”

“I don’t care!”

“Dammit I just can’t I’m sorry y/n”

“I’m- I’m gonna go” he whispered before I felt him stand up. I quickly grabbed his arm pulling him back down. “Y-“ I hugged him, my arms tightened around him as tears fell down my cheeks. He pushed me off of him

“I told you! I fucking can’t!”

3rd pov

Vance hated himself, the moment that door slammed shut he knew he fucked up. She liked him, she actually liked him and he threw it away, because he thought he wasn’t worthy of her love. But someone finally loved him. Finally someone loved him for him other than his mother. No girl not even a boy liked him for him. But he just showed her how much of an asshole he was by pushing her away, shouting at her.

He sighed as he squeezed his eyes shut letting tears fall down his cheeks. Why was he him, why couldn’t he be someone else why couldn’t he be like Bruce. She definitely didn’t like him now.

Y/n cried and cried. She kept contemplating why she was letting a stupid boy upset her like this, why she let Vance hopper upset her. She used to be scared of him but now she hated him.

Vance wanted to go back into her room, apologize, hug her back. Tell her he liked her too. But would she even accept his apology. Maybe. That’s what motivated him to turn around and go back in. He pushed the door open to see y/n now curled up turned towards the opposite direction. Quiet sniffles and sobs coming from her. He slowly walked over and sat down. Y/n turned as she felt the bed dip. She furrowed her eyebrows as she saw it was vance. “Why are you-you back?” She whispered. “I’m sorry” he replied. Y/n huffed and rolled her eyes before pulling her blanket over her body a bit more. “I just I thought that I didn’t deserve you, and I guess I-I proved it by yelling at you” he whispered. “You don’t have to forgive me, you don’t even have to like me anymore. I’m a fucking asshole.” Y/n reached out from under the blanket and grabbed his hand. He turned around furrowing his eyebrows. She tugged on his arm until he laid down next to her. She took one of her hands and placed it onto his cheek before pressing her lips to his. It was weird the past week had been full of negative thoughts, emotions, events. But somehow she felt happy, happy in his arms. This just felt right “I forgive you” she whispered pulling away before pressing her lips back against his.

I figured I'd just answer as a reblog! So, it's kind of a mix of all 3 I would say.

He's not particularly difficult to manipulate once you get to know him, but Albert is smart enough to detect someone trying to take advantage of him. Cedric's just his absolute weak point - Albert is absolutely obsessed with him. He just really craves Cedric's attention, his affection, his love - and Cedric loves to exploit that. He'd do anything for him and be grateful about it. In his mind, it's ok if Cedric hurts him, because it means he cares enough to hurt him.

In some ways, Albert is Cedric's weak point too, it just manifests itself in completely different ways.

The actor Lance Reddick, who has died suddenly aged 60, played figures of authority with such panache that no matter how many times he was handed such roles, he never seemed typecast. He is best known on film for his part as Charon, the all-seeing fixer in the John Wick movie franchise, but his image was forged playing two ambitious high-level cops on television, Cedric Daniels in The Wire (2002-08) and Irvin Irving in Bosch (2014-21).

In each case he was contrasted with a main character: his anguish at the plight of Baltimore as portrayed in The Wire was expressed with internal restraint, opposed to the knee-jerk reactions of Dominic West’s chronic screw-up, McNulty. In Bosch, he was the politician tormented by Titus Welliver’s relentlessly uncompromising Harry Bosch.

Bosch author Michael Connelly said Reddick “took a character who was paper-thin in the books and made Irvin Irving”. He used his tall, angular frame to express authority; moving his body precisely, deliberately stiff and controlled, his face echoing that pose, covering up the machinations inside his head. Audiences watched as he took in, contemplated, and finally reacted, in a voice pitched with the deep tone of authority. His work in Bosch’s second season, where the death of his undercover cop son opens huge cracks in his closely controlled persona and makes him the centre of the show, is a lesson in transcending ensemble play.

Reddick’s highlights in variations of authority-figure themes came in the TV series Fringe (2008-13), running a unit of Homeland Security; Corporate (2018-20), as a CEO; and Intelligence (2014), where he was head of the CIA. On film he was head of the secret service in Angel Has Fallen (2019), and he played Albert Wesker, boss of the Raccoon Police special tactics unit, in the Netflix TV adaptation of the zombie video game Resident Evil (2022).

He was so good that the star of Wick, Keanu Reeves, given a day off from shooting for his birthday, told his girlfriend he wanted to visit the set, just to watch Reddick in action. Reeves then handed him a note thanking him for “what he brought to the character of Charon”.

Bosch also afforded Reddick the chance to play the piano, thoughtfully improvising at home as if to sort out his thoughts; this might be seen to reflect his own hard path to acting success. Reddick was born in Baltimore to Solomon, a lawyer, and Dorothy (nee Gee), a teacher. His musical talent was apparent at Friends School of Baltimore, and he went on to study at the city’s Peabody Institute, a secondary school specialising in the performing arts. He took a degree in composition at the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music and moved to Boston, intending, in his words, to become a rock star.

But his style of music, influenced by Miles Davis and Sting, never fitted a rock star template, and having married his college sweetheart, Suzanne Louis, in 1986, and had two children, he found himself working odd jobs, including as a singing waiter on a riverboat. Crucially, on a night shift at a newspaper delivery depot, he injured his back shifting bundles of papers. Forced to lie in bed, he contemplated how he could support his family, and decided to turn to acting, where he noticed there were more auditions available.

He wound up gaining a master of fine arts degree at Yale Drama School in 1994, and two years later landed his first television role, on New York Undercover; he debuted on-screen in 1998’s ill-judged modern-set Great Expectations.

In 2000 he was cast in David Simon’s The Corner, which led to his part on The Wire, while he also attracted attention with a memorable role as an undercover police officer gone bad in the prison drama Oz (2000-01). Recurring parts in CSI:Miami (2005-06) and Lost (2008-09) followed, and he played James Baldwin in the 2004 movie Brother to Brother. He was the voice of the Falcon in the animated Avengers (2012), and of the villain Ras Al Ghul in Beware the Batman (2013), as well as voicing Commander Zavala in the Destiny video game series, and Sylens in Horizon Zero Dawn (2017) and Horizon Forbidden West (2022).

Along the way he finally got to be a rock star, playing a cop in the music video of Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s ’03 Bonnie & Clyde. In 2007 he released an album of his own music, Contemplations and Remembrances.

John Wick 4 has just been released, and he also leaves behind a store of work that has yet to be seen. Reddick will appear in a remake of White Men Can’t Jump; as Charon in a Wick spin-off, Ballerina; in the Shirley Chisholm biopic, Shirley, and as Capt Blakely in The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. He also voiced the ultimate authority figure, Zeus, in Percy Jackson and the Olympians for Disney+.

Reddick is survived by his second wife, Stephanie (nee Day), whom he married in 2011, and the two children, Yvonne and Christopher, from his first marriage, which ended in divorce.
