The aria in Heroes of Olympus are knows as the curses, they have a super multiplying ability and claws, they multiply with every curse your haters have made, and every slice and blood you take of them, curses are like something someone wished something bad to happen to you, if someone in the past has said "I wish you had heartburn," the Aria can curse you with that.

Once an arai is cut down, their curse is released upon their killer.

In the novels, Annabeth was cursed with blindness and being separated from Percy.

Percy was cursed with nausea, dizziness, and a twitchy eye.

Even the monsters before they were slain can say a curse on someone.
