Ever want to know the lore of Aquaman's hometown, Atlantis (that is probably no longer canon post New-52)?

Well, look now further than the Atlantis Chronicles.

Written by Peter David with art by Esteban Maroto, this five issue run details the history of the Atlantis and the lineage of Arthur/Orin. This run also serves as a prologue to the Peter David's Aquaman run.

The chronicle in question is a direct order made by Orin, the king of the Atlantis, to his historian, Albart of Alcinor. As Orin has made some tremendous changes to the Atlantis, mainly through science and technology, he believes that it is necessary for their journey to be documented.

Orin is aided by his wife, Narmea; his right hand man, Rajar; and his brother slash rival, Shalako. Shalako and Orin's differences in their belief is the main theme of the run. Shalako is religious, and often prayed to the goddesses while Orin is more of a man of science. Still, Orin was civil with his brother despite their differences, including their difference in Orin's decision to build a dome around Atlantis.

That was, until the day a meteor strike Earth, causing Atlantis to sink (yes, Atlantis used to be on land) which changes their whole dynamic forever. Shalako later abandons Atlantis to find his own place as he no longer believes in Orin (as he believes the meteor was the result of the anger of the Gods who were angry with Orin's decision to build a dome). Along him was his numerous wives and his son, Dardanus. Their city was called Tritonis and they were called Tritonians.

As they now live underwater, Orin and his scientists develop a serum that allows his people to breathe underwater. He offers the serum to Shalako's people but a jealous Shalako prays/curses his people with fins and made them believe that it was Orin's serum that was changing them. That was, until Dardanus reveals the truth to the people. Angry, they proceed to kill everyone in Shalako's family excluding Dardanus.

The story continues with the constant battle between the family of Orin and the family of Shalako (through Dardanus, who despite betraying his dad, were still a spoiled, POS, who continues to harm Orin's lineage along with his son, Koryak).

My thoughts:

I personally really enjoy how rich the story of Atlantis Chronicles. While (I believe) the story is no longer canon post New-52, I still think it's worth a read, especially if you're planning to read Peter David Aquaman run. It has drama, it has tension, it has battle, it has curses and magic and if that's what you're looking for, then you'll enjoy this.

The art is very bright with a meso-american inspired design and the characters all look very good. I do wish they keep some of the aesthetics that they have in this run in the modern Aquaman run or even include some of lore in the run.

Orin and Cora (his daughter) are both very strong character and despite how I hate Shalako and his kin (Dardanus and Koryak), they were an effective villain to Orin's.

8. “Can you stay?” 

The rain was hammering against the roof of the inn. If she would bother to take a look outside of the window, Neve would see the streets of Oxenfurt, turning into the rivers of mud in the downpour. 

Instead the elleth moved their shoes closer to the fire and then checked on her jacket hanging from the back of the chair. They were both completely soaked through by the time they made it to the inn and it was only because the innkeeper knew them well that he had managed to find them a room. 

She was fairly certain that it was one of his own and she was all that much more grateful for it. Elves rarely could expect similar kindness from people these days. Someone else would have probably kicked them out back onto the street. 

She put some more wood into the fire and ran her hands through her hair, trying to detangle the wet mess, when the creak of the bed frame pulled her attention back to her companion. 

‘If you move another inch I will bind you to the bed.’ 

A breathy laugh was her first response, before it descended into a fit of coughing. Neve pushed herself to her feet and walked over to Alven, who was watching her with a smirk, despite the glassy look in his eyes and the thin sheen of sweat covering his forehead. 

‘Normally I would think about it as an invitation’ he made a move to sit up, but Neve’s hand was on his shoulder in the next instant, pressing him down. 

‘I said no moving’ she said gently. ‘I don’t want you to start bleeding all over Albart’s sheets… again.’ 

‘Getting stabbed with in the gut will have that effect on you…’ 

‘That’s why not getting stabbed is preferable. Then we would’ve only had the fever to deal with.’ 

Alven grimaced. 

‘Why are you fine anyway? You were as soaked as me all the time…’ 

Neve placed her hand against his unnaturally warm cheek and smiled. 

‘You are wounded, so it’s obvious you would be more prone to fall ill in such a shitty weather. Besides, I survived a smallpox outbreak when I was still an apprentice in the Melitele temple. I would say that a simple cold is not going to harm me.’ 

‘Lucky you…’ 

‘Remind me of that later and I will tell you about how I was burying the other less fortunate girls… but you should try to rest now. You are not going anywhere anytime soon.’

‘And what about you?’ 

‘I will go downstairs and try to whisk away something to eat… Maybe I will go check on the horses. The stables were as crowded as the inn and I want to make sure…’ 

‘Can you stay?’ 

Neve’s smile softened at that, before she leaned down and placed a quick kiss against Alven’s sweaty temple. 

‘Unfortunately we both need food, but I think I can pass on the horses tonight… Albart’s boy seemed like a lad who knows what he is doing…’ 

‘Good’ Alven breathed letting his eyes fall shut. ‘Just don’t take too long…’ 

‘Just go to sleep and you won’t even notice me gone’ with the last pat onto his shoulder, Neve turned on her heel and quietly left the room.

Atlantis Chronicles, part 1

Atlantis Chronicles #1 - 7. March-September, 1990. By Peter David and Esteban Maroto.

This is a multi-post review as the content is too much and all of it deserves just one score. So stay with me for the 7 issues of this limited series.

Orin the First, ruler of Poseidonis charges Albart of Ancinor with the task of chronicling the history of Atlantis. Albart pledges to treat this endeavor with honesty and integrity. Orin's brother, Shalako, reminds him that such a chore might not paint all Atlanteans in the best of lights.

Time passes, and Poseidonis is attacked by a tribe of neighboring savages. Orin immediately regrets bringing the art of warfare to such a people, but Poseidonis' advanced technology enables them to repulse the invaders.

The victory inspires Orin to take extreme measures to safeguard the city from future attacks. He has his scientists erect a massive dome of pumice around the entire city. The dome is porous enough to allow air and rain to pass through, but it is strong enough to repel enemy combatants. Pious Shalako, warns Orin that building this dome is an affront to Suula, goddess of the sky.

More time passes, and Orin and his wife Narmea sire their first child, Cora.

At this time, the Atlantean seer Rajar predicts a great cataclysm exists in Atlantis' future. He has detected a skull-shaped meteor in outer space that is on a direct path for Earth. Shalako prays to Suula to save their world from imminent destruction, but inwardly he suspects that Suula is responsible for bringing the meteor to the planet; punishment for erecting the citywide dome.

Orin wants to use a giant laser to destroy the meteor, but in order to properly angle it, they need to bring it into the territory governed by the savages. He sends Rajar to plead their case, citing that such a task is in the interest of both cultures. The savages don't agree with the Poseidonians' concerns and behead Rajar. In retaliation, Orin sends his soldiers to slaughter the entire tribe. They eventually activate their laser, but it has no effect against the meteor.

The meteor crashes into the Earth, causing worldwide geological upheaval. The entire continent of Atlantis sinks beneath the waves. Poseidonis survives and the dome remains intact, but all those outside the city walls are killed instantly. Historically, this event becomes known as the "Great Deluge".
