Alba Iulia, a day trip from Sibiu

We first came to know about Alba lulia from our Airbnb host, Diana, in Timisoara. We had to go to Sibiu from Timisoara and the bus ride was about 6 hours. Diana suggested we go to Alba lulia first, stay there for a night, and then go to Sibiu. It did not work out for us as we had already booked an Airbnb apartment in Sibiu. In Sibiu, our host also mentioned Alba lulia that we can easily do a day trip from Sibiu. It takes only 1.5 hours to get there and there are a lot of buses running back and forth. We finally went to Alba lulia a day before we were leaving Sibiu. Not sure why we waited so long.

History of Alba lulia

Alba lulia is a city in Transylvania region of Romania, with a population of with a population of about 64,000. It is one of the oldest settlements in Romania and used to be called Apulum. It was an important city for the Romans, serving as the capital of the Roman Empire’s province of Dacia. It was the largest military and economic center during their time. In 1541, Alba Iulia became the capital of the Eastern Hungarian Kingdom reaching its peak, and It was here that on December 1st 1918, the province of Transylvania announced its unification with Romania. Romania used to be three separate regions until 1918: Transylvania, Walachia, and Moldova. In 1922, this is where the first king of Greater Romania, Prince Ferdinand, was crowned. So yea, Alba lulia may not be the capital of Romania, but it is one of the most important cities in Romania.

How to reach Alba lulia from Sibiu

The best way to reach Alba lulia from Sibiu is by bus. We took a bus at 10:43 AM from Autogara Q7 ( a small bus station) and reached Alba lulia by 12:30 PM. You can find the schedule of buses here. It is about a 20 minute walk to the old town/citadel from the bus station.

Alba lulia is famous for its star shaped citadel, which is the biggest in Romania. Designed by an Italian architect Giovanni Morando Visconti, it was built between 1716 and 1735, using the Vauban military architectural system. It has 7 gates and all of them are interesting, but in my opinion gate III is the most impressive one, decorated with intricate carvings on both facades.

There are a lot of cool statues we found while strolling around. Everyone was trying to get a picture or two with the statues. This citadel is really clean and full of cafes and stalls. If you decide to be here in summer (May to September) , it’s even better. There is a guard change ceremony every day at noon, taking place nearby the 3rd and 4th Citadel Gates. It’d definitely take you back to the old times.

In the citadel, St. Michael’s catholic Cathedral is pretty outstanding. Built between 1247 and 1291, it is of romanesque style. The tomb of Prince Iancu de Hunedoara and of Polish-born Isabella Jagiełło, former Queen of Hungary. are located here.

There is also an orthodox Cathedral of the Reunification at the western entrance. It was built between 1921 and 1923 to celebrate Transylvania's reunification with Romania.

Besides these two churches, you can also find the Union Hall with the National Honour Gallery, The National History Museum of Unification, the Voivodal Palace, the Batthyaneum Library, the Roman Catholic bishop's palace, the Apor Palace, and the University of Alba Iulia.

Strolling around this citadel is like a living history lesson about plenty of chapters of Romania history, containing Romanian nation birth and the three countries unions. A coup of hours should be enough for this place. There was a bus at 3:30 and we took that to go back to Sibiu. I am so glad we listened to our Airbnb hosts and saw this magnificent citadel.

Andrea - We were lucky enough to get to see Alba Lulia twice. First with the people staying in Timisora and the with our new friends who are in the highschool in Oraiste. We enjoyed the sights and the history museums followed by a little shopping.

Řada nešťastných příhod: výsadek edition

Ano. Znovu na výsadek. Posledně jsem Martina hecoval, že 24 hodin je malej challenge. Takže upgrade: výsadek na 48 hodin. Dvojnásobná doba = dvojnásobný zážitky. A evidentně dvojnásobný množství fuckupů.  Znáte to.  

Takže. Začnu z lehka.

Původně jsem měl jet s Honzou z Twista, ten ale namísto cestovní horečky dostal zánět osmičky. Honza je pryč ze hry. Stane se. Parťáka teda nechávám náhodě.

Další změna: Martin - organizátor výsadku - se den před odjezdem nemohl hejbat, takže velení svěřil Vítkovi. Tím odpadl jedinej člověk ze skupiny, kterýho jsem měl znát.

Takže se tak nějak zdálo, že se všechno sesypává.

Nezbývá než vyrazit vstříc dobrodružství, right?👌👋

Ráno jsme se probudili někde v Rumunsku, dali jsme snídani, pak takovou poslední večeři a udělali se dvojice. Teda. 4 dvojice a jedna trojice. Po všemožných změnách jsem nakonec místo se dvěma holčinama byl vysazenej s Petrem. Nevadí, jde se. Nebo vlastně jede.

Nocleh nebyl lehkej. Po rozvázání očí bylo vidět, že není vidět nic. Byli jsme někde na dědině kde krom nás bylo zhruba dalších 5 domů. Kdo nikdy neslyšel rumunštinu tak možná neví, že vlastně i kdyby ji slyšel, nebude rozumět ani slovo. Takže domluva rukama nohama jenom né slovy. Protože ty prostě nefungovaly. Nejdřív se kvůli nám rozpoutala vyhrocená debata mezi třema ženskejma, kterou jsem ukončil naším odchodem. Tak nějak jsem doufal, že se za námi rozběhnou a ubytují nás. Za chvilku nás fakt doběhly a pomohly nám najít nocleh u jednoho z místních.

Takže noc první🐟🐬🐳

Týpek s typkou, 32 a 20, ani slovo anglicky. Nechali nám jejich ložnici a oni šli spát kdo ví kam. Vzhledem k tomu, že jsme neměli peníze, nabídli jsme naše jediný bohatství: alkohol. Frajerovi zachutnal trochu víc a zanedlouho vytáhl z garáže dva pěti litrový barely jeho domácí pálenky. Takže se pilo a povídalo. Vlastně jsme se spíš snažili povídat, ale rozuměli jsme si tak maximálně jména. Potom byla hostina a tak. To není nic neobvyklýho. Co ale neobvyklý bylo je, že pán za mnou přišel, že mi chce něco ukázat. No a. Vysypal z igelitový tašky 4 mrtvý rybky a čekal asi, že je budu obdivovat. Tak jsem naplnil jeho očekávání a obdivoval jsem. Potom je hodil do vody a těšil se jak mi ukáže, že jsou vlastně živý. Úplně se mu jeho kouzelnej trik nepovedl a tři ze čtyř vyplavaly břichem nahoru. V průběhu večera rybičky furt vytahoval, ukazoval a pak mi jednu podal. Asi na pohlazení. Pecina.

Ráno jsme vzhledem ke konzumaci jeho alkoholu byli fakt rádi že vidíme.

Teďko by se asi hodilo napsat o druhý noci. Takže přeskočím všemožný stopy - konktrétně pak osm stopů - a jdu na věc.  

Noc druhá 👻🌝

Dorazili jsme do města Alba Lulia dávno po setmění, plán byl…vlastně nebyl. Jedna z variant byla přespat v areálu kláštera, ale to nešlo protože důvody. Backup plán: jít někam z centra a zkusit najít útočiště u místních. Po chvíli hledání jsme nic nenašli. Šli jsme teda dál. Před námi jsme zahlídli hezkou otevřenou bránu a plot. Napadlo mě, že to je něco jako pražská grébovka - hezkej oplocenej park, kterej se třeba na noc zavírá. Po průchodu bránou bylo jasný, že to park není. Procházeli jsme dál a dál mezi náhrobky až do chvíle, kdy jsme narazili na hezký - v rámci možností - místo, kde se daly položit karimatky a složit hlava. Takže jo. Spali jsme na hřbitově a jo. Bylo to divný. Celta žádná, žďárák taky ne a stan už vůbec, takže hezká noc s vidinou mokrýho spacáku. Fain.

Vynechám dalších 7 stopů a začnu s mojí oblíbenou částí výsadku.

Pátrací akce 😱

“Kluci, kdepak jste? Jste nedostupní”

V půl šestý večer nás vysadil v cílové vesničce jedinej člověk, co jsme za 48 hodin potkali, co mluvil anglicky - pravoslavnej kněz v jeepu. Z vesnice do cíle zbývalo 9 kilometrů pěšky, takže jasnej dochod za tmy. S chutí do toho a půl je hotovo. Když jsme poprvý sešli z cesty, cinkal jsem rolničkou na medvědy jak nikdy. Z prvního zabloudění jsme vybruslili poměrně rychle, třeba za hoďku. Druhý zabloudění byla vlastně trochu naše chyba. Stopli jsme lesáka a ten nás svezl z cesty, dovezl nás k jeho rozbitýmu traktoru a ukázal nám směr, kam se máme vydat. Šli jsme potokem hore a hore, pak taky dole. Po zahlédnutí červený značky jsem byl šťastnej jako blecha. Ne na dlouho ale vlastně. Když jsme přelézali prvních pět padlých stromů, nečekali jsme, že mezi stromy budeme prolejzat i následující hodinu. Myslete prosim taky na to, že je celou dobu tma, takže čelovka a rolnička jediný kámoši.

Nikdy jsem asi nebyl tak v prdeli jako tam.

Zhruba za hodinku jsme sestoupali až dolů k cílové jeskyni s očekáváním táboráku a 13 lidí. Nikdo tam ale nebyl.

Nedalo se svítit, musíme od jeskyně pryč, k nejbližšímu telefonu zavolat a zjistit co se děje. Naše telefony neměly totiž poslední tři hodiny signál. Při výstupu jsem zaslechnul volání mýho jména, to vždycky rád slyšim, zvlášť potom v takovýhlech situacích. Ukázalo se že všichni už byli v tábořišti a nám jediným se nepodařilo dovolat, tak se nás vydali hledat. Dokážu si představit, že situace byla na obouch stranách dost stresující.

Důkaz tmy kdyby něco

No ale našli jsme se, takže za mě rozhodně důvod pro pifka.

Tim se dostávám asi k poslední věci, co se nepovedla.

Koupačka v mínusu ⛄️🤧

Sedělo se u ohně, zpívalo se a byl tam i nějakej alkohol. Když zábava končila, zvedl jsem se, že pomůžu holčině postavit stan. Co se stalo dál rozhodně nebylo, jak se může zdát kvůli alkoholu, skoro jsem nepil. Když jsem se zvedal, překra��oval jsem karimatku, na který se sedělo, ale při došlápnutí jsem zjistil, že neni kam došlápnout.

Jsou dvě ráno, mrzne a já právě spadl do potoka ve všem oblečení na zimu, co jsem měl. Chvilku jsem ve vodě ležel, než mi došlo, co že se to právě stalo.

Nedalo se nesmát.

Omrzlá basa s mým večerním koupáním v pozadí

Přes to všechno jsem si výsadek užil. Fakt jo. Byla to super akce. Sešla se neuvěřitelná parta lidí a cesta, kterou jsme podnikli - necelých 400km - stopem, byla pecková. Rozhodně děkuju moc Martinovi a Sabče, který to celý naplánovali a pak Vítkovi, Sabče a Alče za super akci a za to, že jste nás našli. ❤️. A jo. Je to akce Expedition Clubu.

Zajímavost na závěr 🤔

Za posledních 96 hodin jsem svůj život svěřil do rukou 20 různým řidičům v 17 různých autech.
