and as always, you can catch up with last week's show on mixcloud.

[Album] Silver Moth veröffentlichen "Black Bay" am 21. April!
Tumblr media
“We went into a really intense creative mode as soon as we got there”, erinnert sich Elisabeth Elektra an die intensive Arbeitsweise auf der Isle of Lewis. “We were in a bubble and there was a lot of collective grief going on, so it was like a pressure cooker, but I think some real beauty came out of it.”
youtube
“I knew with everything in me that we could make something powerful, beautiful, celestial and driven” führt Evi Vine aus. “Even though we had never met. We spend our lives in repetition, surrounded by certainty. It’s important to push aside the things we think we understand, because when we least expect it, change comes and we are lost.”

My Hamefura Original Characters Part 5
This characters are my Next Gen/oc children of my prefered Hamefura pairings. The pairings are Katarina/Geordo, Alan/Mary, Keith/Sophia, Nicol/Fray Randall, and Raphael/Maria.
Edit: Changed Genevra to Geneva
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 - Part 6 Part 7 Part 8
GeoKata Children
Gwendoline “Gwen” Stuart - kind and friendly, as spirited as her mother but has more composure - except when she gets annoyed by her twin brother or cousin Theo. As the eldest, she sees herself as a role model to her younger siblings and does her best as a great big sister towards them, even Kyle, even though he's her twin and taller than her. Despite being genuinely kind, Gwen secretly has a dark side not unlike her father, though it only manifests when she's truly angered at someone. As athletic as her mother, she likes climbing trees and sword fighting and is a great farmer. She inherited her father's genius and becomes student council president, though she also has some of her mother's impulsiveness and denseness towards romance. She has blonde hair and slanted eyes the same color as Katarina's; she looks like her mother but with some of Gerald's traits. She has powerful Fire Magic.
Kyle Stuart - just as kind as his mother, with a slight teasing side towards his sister as he likes to annoy her. He is a great older brother to his youngest siblings. Like his sister, he has a dark side inherited from his father that he only shows when he's genuinely angry. Just as spirited as his mother, he loves horseback riding and is a bit of a speed demon. He inherited his father's genius and is vice president of the student council. While he does have some of Katarina's impulsiveness and romantic denseness, he's a bit more level-headed and tries to keep Gwen in check (not that he's always successful). He has blonde hair and slanted eyes the same color as Katarina's; he looks like his father but with some of Katarina's traits. He has powerful Fire Magic.
Gerard Stuart - is kind and polite but has a mischievous and pranking side. He greatly admires Gwen and Kyle but gets a bit annoyed when they display "older sibling love" by hugging him or when they call him "baby brother" while ruffling his hair - he actually likes it, just doesn't want to admit it. He claims to find his younger siblings annoying, especially Kaspian, for being such a Mama's Boy, but he honestly cares about them and would help them with whatever they need. He sometimes tries putting on a mask to appear to be fine, but his family can always tell that something is wrong, especially Katarina and Karina. Gerard is closer to Karina, and they often plan pranks together. Despite usually being nice and not taking his pranks too far, Gerard inherited his father's dark side that appears when he's really angry. He has Gerald's intelligence, Katarina's mischievous side, and romantic denseness. He enjoys building stuff and learned how to make fake snakes from his mother. He is close with Eleanor Claes, his cousin, and Tristan Ascart. He looks like a mini-Gerald, so Katarina gave him a similar name to his father. He has strong Fire Magic with decent control over it.
Karina Stuart - tomboyish and impulsive, with a mischievous side but still kind and friendly. She greatly admires her big brother Kyle and wants to be as cool as he is. She is close to her other big brother Gerard, and they often plan pranks together. Karina is very athletic and enjoys physical activities like horseback riding, tree-climbing, and sword fighting; she LOVES lizards, especially snakes. She does not have a dark side like her older siblings and father, but she can pull off a villainous face when she's angry. She is close with her cousins Katherine and Alanna. She looks identical to her mother, Katarina, so her father gave her a similar name. She has Earth Magic of average strength but with good control over it.
Geneva Stuart - she's kind, friendly, and polite. Unlike her mother and sisters, Geneva is interested in more feminine and ladylike hobbies like tea parties; that's not to say that she hates tree climbing and farming; she's just more interested in other things. Geneva greatly admires her Auntie Mary, who wishes to be like her; she's also the closest to her maternal grandmother, Millidiana, out of her siblings. That said, Geneva doesn't mind getting dirty and tumbling around while playing, and her favorite non-ladylike activity is sword fighting. She's very close to her younger twin sister, Kathleen. Geneva inherited her father's dark side and, besides proper noblewoman skills, Auntie Mary also taught her how to deal with people who mess with her loved ones subtly. That said, Geneva is not above showing her sword skills if the situation demands it. She resembles Katarina with some of Gerald's traits; se has has light blonde hair (like Luigi) and Katarina's eyes. She has powerful Earth Magic with good control over it.
Kathleen Stuart - she's kind and friendly though a bit quiet and timid compared to the rest of her family. Kathleen prefers more calm and peaceful activities like reading books or helping her mother farm. She does like to climb trees, though, and she can often be found reading a book while resting on a branch. Kathleen is close to her older twin sister, Geneva. Despite her usual timid nature, Kathleen will stand up in defense of others, and although she doesn't have a dark side like her father, she can pull off a terrifying villainous face. She resembles Katarina with some of Gerald’s traits; she has light blonde hair (like Luigi's) and Gerald's eyes. She has Fire Magic of moderate strength but excellent control over it.
Kaspian Stuart - friendly, kind, and spirited; Kaspian is very similar to Katarina in both appearance and personality. Due to being born prematurely, Katarina is a bit overprotective - not to the point of smothering him, just checking in on him a lot - and often babies him. Though Kaspian sometimes gets annoyed or exasperated by his mother babying him, he doesn't mind too much and is really close to her, often spending time with her climbing trees, farming, or reading - Kaspian actually likes romance novels, but he's a bit embarrassed about it. Though he's closest to his mother, Kaspian likes doing things with his father and playing with his siblings and loves and looks up to all of them. Although he's very similar to his mother in personality, Kaspian has inherited his father's dark side that manifests when he's really upset. He looks like a male version of Katarina. He has somewhat weak Earth magic though his control over it is good.
Alan/Mary Children
Harper Stuart - inherited Alan's tsundere personality and Mary's devious cunning. While he's talented at music and enjoys it, his actual passion is painting. He believes that he's cool, but only the younger kids agree with him; the other older ones know that he's a big doofus. He looks like Alan, complete with spiky hair but with Mary's hair and eye color. He has powerful Water Magic and excellent control over it.
Katherine “Kathy” Stuart -  She's very cheerful and confident and loves gardening, both flowers, and vegetables. Inherited Mary's grace and devious side when protecting those important to her. She looks like a mini-Mary but with Alan's blue eyes. She has strong Water magic with good control over it.
Alanna “Allie” Stuart -  She's shier than her twin, and older brother, like how Mary was before she met Katarina. She's closest to her father and inherited his talent and passion for music. She  resembles Alan the most, with spiky silver hair and blue eyes. She has strong Water magic with good control over it.
Keith/Sophia Children
Theodore “Theo” Claes - is a charming and sweet gentleman but also a chaotic gremlin. He gets exasperated by his cousins' antics - even though he joins in and actually suggests some of them. He argues with Gwen and Kyle similarly to how Keith and Gerald argue. He loves reading like Sophia and does have a secret interest in romance novels. He has white hair and red eyes and resembles Keith though the shape of his eyes is like Sophia's. He has powerful Wind Magic.
Eleanor “Ellie” Claes - is cheerful and imaginative; she loves reading fairy tales and adventure stories and imagining herself and her friends as the characters. She has a mischievous side and loves to tease her brother. She looks like Sophia, though her white hair is fluffy like her father's, and she inherited Keith's blue eyes. She has strong Earth Magic.
Nicol/Fray Children
Amaryllis Ascart - is calm and level-headed like Nicol but more expressive than him and has a teasing side that she inherited from Fray. She's the heir of the Ascart family and aims to become Prime Minister like her father and grandfather. Her best friend is Lucia Walt. She looks like a female Nicol but with her mother's eyes and body shape; she wears glasses that make her look even more stunning. She has strong Wind Magic.
Tristan Ascart - a mini-Nicol in terms of appearance and personality but has a deadpan sense of humor. He wishes to join the Ministry as a researcher. Closest to Gerard and his cousin Eleanor, their relationship echoes that of Nicol, Gerald, and Sophia. He has strong Wind Magic.
Marcel Ascart - Unlike his parents and siblings, he's outspoken and not afraid to speak his mind but can still remain polite when doing so. He inherited his aunt Sophia's mischievous side and his mother's cheekiness. Not interested in the politics of nobility; he wants to travel and explore the world. He looks like his mother the most out of his siblings. His best friend is Adriana Walt. He has strong Wind Magic.
Raphael/Maria Children
Lucia Walt - she acts like a big sister, not just to her own younger sister but to her friends and their siblings. Amaryllis is her best friend, and they often try to keep the others out of trouble, though they get dragged into their shenanigans most of the time. She's just as kind as her mother but has Raphael's penchant for teasing her friends. She possesses powerful Light Magic and inherited her mother's baking skills. She's also a great tea maker though her youngest sister is better. She looks like Raphael (and his mother) with Maria's blue eyes.
Adriana Walt - She is much more assertive and spirited compared to her parents and her sister, not afraid to stand up to others regardless of social status. She used to have an inferiority complex towards her older sister, Lucia, due to people comparing the two because Lucia has Light Magic while Adriana has Wind Magic. A talk with her uncle Alan, who had a similar experience, helped her. While she's s decent baker, her real talent lies in cooking savory foods, and her tea-making skills are better than Lucia's. She is a Mini-Maria with strawberry blond hair and grayish-blue eyes.
Trivia
The older kids, from eldest to youngest, are Lucia (17), Amaryllis (17), Theodore(16), Gwen & Kyle (16), and Harper (16). The younger kids, from eldest to youngest, are Tristan (14), Eleanor (13), Gerard (13), Karina (12), Katherine & Alanna (12), Marcel (11), Adriana (11), Geneva & Kathleen (10), and Kaspian (7).
Lucia and Amaryllis are like the group's older sisters. They try to be responsible, but often get dragged into the others' chaos.
After Gerard was born, Katarina and Gerald weren't planning to have another baby so soon but they conceived Karina about seven months later. It was a bit hard taking care of a not-even one-year-old baby while pregnant, but Katarina had Gerald, her friends, and the servants to help her.
Katarina's reaction to discovering that she was having twins again (Geneva and Kathleen) was to glare at Gerald as if it was his fault.
Kaspian was born premature, and he was a difficult pregnancy and birth, so Katarina tends to baby him a lot.
All three sets of twins (Gwen & Kyle, Katherine & Alanna, Geneva & Kathleen) have a connection with their twin sibling.
Harper inherited the "sings along with little birds and pets bunnies" aura that Alan seems to have.
Look, Sophia's adorable, and Keith has great sex appeal, so their children are very beautiful.
The future Ascarts like reading due to their Auntie Sophia's influence. Amaryllis does read romance occasionally, but she and her younger brothers prefer adventure.
All of the GeoKata kids inherited Dark Magic from Katarina but Kaspian has the strongest connection to it.
Unlike the previous two generations of the Royal Family, Geneva is interested in inheriting the throne.
Theo and Ellie are chaos gremlins, though Theo wants to pretend that he is responsible.

OMG! Harry slapped Benicio del Toros butt??? WHY AREN'T THERE ANY PICTURES OF THIS SHIT?! lol It's tragicomical though - Benicio was like the Hollywood version of Harry. Boozer, fornicator, all-round party guy. THe rest of his family are settled proper people, doctors and crap. Lol. And Ben goes and knocks up Rob Stuarts daughter after a romp in a hotel ELEVATOR. Bet Harry felt he had met his soulmate in Benicio :P
It was just a amor.
I didn’t know about the Alanna Stewart elevator rumor. Weird, because I remember a very similar Scarlett Johansson elevator rumor. I guess the dude likes elevators.

Suffocation. No breathing.
Empower me.

Sexual Abuse And Sexual Misconduct: Protect Survivors, Punish Perpetrators
By Matthew Ginsberg, University of South Florida, Class of 2021
July 4, 2020
Tumblr media
The Me-Too movement was founded by Tarana Burke in 2006, in an effort to raise awareness for victims of sexual abuse. Ms. Burke and her organization’s commitment has helped thousands of women gain the courage to speak upagainst their abusers. Nearly 14 years since the Me-Too movement began and significant changes have been made in federal policy, as a result of the efforts by activists committed to the movement, such as several states banning nondisclosure agreements covering sexual harassment. But being a prime proponent of updates in legislation to help protect victims of sexual assault was only the beginning for  the Me-Too movement. Since partnering with the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund in January 2018, they have raised over $24 million to help fund survivors pursuing legal action against their attacker. Nearly 5,000 women have won their cases and received financial compensation for the despicable betrayal of cowardly perpetrators. Regardless of the legal outcome, however, no amount of prison time or compensation can erase the memories of helplessness and sheer  torture inflicted by the offender. With “433,648 victims (ages 12 and older) of rape and sexual assault each year in the United States,” what can be done to help ensure women and people of all genders are protected against acts of sexual abuse and misconduct?
Criminals guilty of sexual abuse need to be held accountable in a court of law. On average, for every 1,000 rapes that take place in the United States, 994 perpetrators walk  free of charges. The endangerment of the overwhelming majority of rapists getting away with such barbaric action is that every time an accused rapist's charges gets acquitted or dismissed, the judicial system is reinforcing that their heinous actions are permissible.  Even if not all accused perpetrators of sexual assault and misconduct committed the crimes they are charged with, too often men get a free pass in the courtroom, while  the safety and protection of women seems to be of minimal priority. Unfortunately, many victims are forced to accept this undignified reality, causing the majority to forgo reporting their abusers. According to the Criminal Justice System Statistics (CJSS), “3 out of every 4 cases of sexual misconduct go unreported.” The fact that 75% of assaults, on average, do not result in the pursuit of legal action by the victim is a clear indicator  that the criminal justice system is failing to protect and support victims-turned-survivors. According to a survey conducted in 2015 by the CJSS, “over 1 in 5 victims choose not to report their abuser because they believe the police and judicial system will not do anything to help.” Based on the data, it’s clear that there needs to be significant updates in legislation, that show the government and judicial system will no longer tolerate the sadistic betrayal committed by perpetrators of sexual misconduct and abuse. Having privilege and physical superiority does not grant any citizen the right to take advantage of a vulnerable situation, reiterating the importance of the government needing to do their part to deter unwarranted acts of sexual violence.
The Brock Turner case in 2015 exemplifies a prime example of why most survivors do not have faith in the judicial system. After being accused of raping Chanel Miller behind a dumpster, while she was unconscious, Mr. Turner admitted in court that, “my actions were a product of a culture of drinking, peer pressure, and sexual proximity.” Ms. Miller begged Judge Aaron Persky to sentence Turner to a 14- year maximum sentence, but was absolutely devastated when the judge ruled in favor of a 6-month minimum sentence. Some information that is important to consider in this case is that Mr. Turner, at the time of the incident, was the captain of the Standard Swimming Team. Judge Persky, who was the sole ruler of the case, had been a student- athlete at Stanford himself. Based on the clear evidence against Mr. Turner and the defendant's decision to plead guilty, there is reason to believe that gender inequality, white privilege, and athletic privilege played an instrumental role in the outcome of the ruling. Because the national news media was so attracted to this case, the court had a tremendous opportunity to make a statement to all perpetrators of sexual abuse that they will be held liable for their deplorable actions. But, instead, the ruling jeopardized the importance of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), that was implemented in 1994 to “protect any victim of actual or threatened sexual abuse.” The ruling in this case signifies why so many victims-turned-survivors have such a difficult time confronting abusers in the judicial system; they are afraid of feeling like victims for a second time.
To help encourage survivors to speak their truth, it is imperative that judges and jurors play their role in ensuring their rulings in sexual abuse cases match the evidence presented and extent of the crime committed, knowing that the trauma inflicted by the accused perpetrator can never be erased. It is sickening that we live in a society where parents are forced to discuss with their young daughters’ methods to protect themselves from sexual abuse, when sons and all perpetrators should be educated enough to know better. Instead of shaming the victim, it is time all citizens stand behind survivors as supporters, allies, and listeners. Sexual abuse is not just a legal issue, but rather an invasion against humanitarian rights, moral decency, and values of equality embedded within a democratic system. Not all accused perpetrators of sexual abuse are guilty, but until we, as a society, embrace the equal protection of women and survivors of all genders, the number of victims per year in the United States will continue to increase. A six-month minimum sentence against Mr. Turner, when he admitted to sexually abusing a defenseless, unconscious woman behind a dumpster, symbolizes one of many examples where members in positions of power did not do their part in protecting victims-turned-survivors. To ensure the equal protection of women and victims of all genders is of utmost priority, it is time for citizens to come together to show the government and the criminal justice system that rulings based on preconceived bias and prejudice will no longer be tolerated moving forward.

Character Names in Eleutherophobia
Since I’ve had a few people ask me about the character names in Eleutherophobia, I figured I’d run down the whole list.  These names are approximately in order of appearance in my various fics.  To be clear: this is not crossover fiction.  These are supposed to be nods to these characters, not the characters themselves.  Bearing that in mind, in approximate order of appearance:
Day the Earth Stood Still
Essa 412: a yeerkanization of “Boy 412,” the main character of the Septimus Heap series.  In my opinion, the second best treatment of the impact of war on children ever written into a modern fantasy series.
Leslie Burke: the deuteragonist of Bridge to Terabithia.  The character always reminded me of a younger Rachel, so I chose to give the name to the bearer of Rachel’s death.
Anne Shirley: the main character of Anne of Green Gables, who often goes underestimated for the extent to which she is a tough, complex, socially awkward heroine written in 1908.
George Little: the younger brother of the title character of Stuart Little.  Mostly named because I wanted to give David a last name that implied cowardice without being ridiculously obvious about it.
Lost World
[Steve] Carlsberg: the not-quite-antagonist of Welcome to Night Vale.
Akira
Dr. Miranda Franklin: named for Miranda of Dr. Franklin’s Island.  Kind of a pun on my part: the plot of that book involves one of the main characters involuntarily turning into an anaconda.
Jennifer Murdley: titular character of Jennifer Murdley’s Toad, one of the books in Bruce Coville’s Magic Shop series who learns the very hard way to love herself.
Mrs. [Hannah] Gruen: Nancy Drew’s housekeeper.
THX 1138
Joey Costello: the deuteragonist of Tangerine, a story about two boys who have very different sets of troubles with their respective older brothers.
Dr. Pendanski: one of the incompetent counselors from Holes by Louis Sachar.
Jodi O’Shea: far and away my most pointed literary allusion.  Jodi is a minor character in The Host by Stephenie Meyer, a book which I love (except for the extremely problematic ending, but I’ll get back to that). The Host is essentially a love story between a yeerk (Wanda) and a human (Ian) whose entire plot is driven by consent negotiations.  It’s about Wanda and Ian wishing they could be together but knowing they never will because they can’t be without violating the right to consent of the yeerk’s host, Melanie.  Melanie, meanwhile, is in love with a different guy... Who can’t be with her either without violating Wanda’s right to consent.
[SPOILER WARNING] Eventually Ian resolves this love quadrangle by putting Wanda inside a human (“Pet,” and don’t get me started on that name) who has been a controller for so long that she has forgotten how to exert her own conscious will.  Wanda and Ian presumably do the horizontal tango using that host instead, AND THIS IS TREATED AS A HAPPY ENDING.  Jodi O’Shea also meets the same fate as Pet: Jodi has forgotten how to feed herself or move on her own, so her own husband decides that they should just put her yeerk, Sunny, back in her head.  Sunny claims that Jodi is brain-dead... But Sunny is also strongly motivated to lie.  (There are also implications that Jodi’s husband becomes romantically involved with Sunny instead, a plot which is so horrifying it deserves its own blog post.)  Most importantly, all the main characters are really happy that these poor hosts are vegetables.  There is an entire subpopulation of humans who have become entirely dependent on their alien slave masters for survival... and this fact is treated as the solution to all the characters’ problems.  It’s celebrated.  And, yeah, both THX 1138 and Ghost in the Shell contain some pretty pointed commentary from me on why I find this ending to be so deeply unfortunate.  [END SPOILERS]
Ghost in the Shell
Mary Lennox: the main character of The Secret Garden, the first book without pictures I ever read on my own.
Rose Rita: main character of The Letter, the Witch, and the Ring, and arguably one of the first genderqueer characters to make it into a children’s fantasy novel.
Margaret White: the antagonist of Stephen King’s novel Carrie, obsessed with preserving the innocence (and thus the dependent ignorance) of her teenage daughter.
Sophie Hatter: main character of Howl’s Moving Castle, who does in fact make her own clothes.
[Mr.] Broxholm: the titular alien from My Teacher Flunked the Planet by Bruce Coville, one of the most awesome and profound children’s sci-fi novels I have ever read.
Anita Psammead: a nod to The Five Children and It by E. Nesbitt, one of the first ever fantasy novels written for children.
Miss Zarves: the teacher from Sideways Stories from Wayside School who doesn’t exist, because she was accidentally assigned to teach on a floor that was never built.
Nikto 770: nod to the code phrase in Day the Earth Stood Still (the original movie, not my fic).
Kit Rodriguez: the deuteragonist of the Young Wizards series, known for his passion and tendency to care deeply for others.
Aristotle “Ari” [Mendoza]: main character of Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe.
Dante [Quintana]: main character of Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe.
Gabriel “G.T.” Stoop: the main character’s mentor in Hope Was Here.
Elijah Springfield: a teen detective from the Veritas Project series.
Lydia [Bennett]: supporting character from Pride and Prejudice.
Nick Adams: a recurring Ernest Hemingway character.
T.J. Avery: next door neighbor to the Logan family in Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry.
Cecily Tallis: the narrator’s older sister (and unwitting victim) in Atonement by Ian McEwan.
Maybeth Tillerman: one of the main characters in Homecoming by Cynthia Voight, a book that critics like to describe as “the anti-Boxcar Children” for its unflinchingly realistic portrayal of childhood homelessness.
June Boatwright: one of the protagonist’s mentors in The Secret Life of Bees.
Caitlin Somers: a Judy Blume character from Summer Sisters.
Alex Morales: main character of The Dead and the Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer.
Cooper-Trebond: shortening of “Alanna Cooper of Trebond” the name of the main character of Tamora Pierce’s Song of the Lioness series.
Jesse Hauptman: the protagonist’s stepdaughter and mentee in the Mercy Thompson series.
Timmy Dugan: lesser-known real name of WWII comic book hero Dum Dum Dugan, sidekick to Nick Fury and Howling Commando as part of the Marvel universe.
Luke Castellan and Chris Rodriguez: two of the supporting characters from Percy Jackson and the Olympians.  I wouldn’t say that Luke Castellan is the first meatsuit I ever fell in love with (despite him being basically a voluntary controller and also a human dumpster fire), but I would say that he made my tendency to care too much about meatsuits in general about 1000 times worse.
“Cornelius”: okay, this one is in fact a crossover—that’s meant to be Tyler Durden, main character of Chuck Palahnuick’s Fight Club. He’s a schizophrenic, lonely guy who goes to support groups for various traumas that he never actually survived (usually under the fake name Cornelius) because that’s the only way he knows how to connect to people.
Odette: the protagonist of Swan Lake and several subsequent adaptations, including Mercedes Lackey’s awesome The Black Swan.
Rod Allbright: another character from My Teacher is an Alien, because I love that series.
Officer Nice: a nod to the song of the same name by Vio-Lence, one of my few non-literary allusions.
Gerald “Jerry” Cruncher: a guy who works as a porter (and remover of bodies) in of A Tale of Two Cities.
Paul Edgecombe: main character of The Green Mile, a deeply conflicted prison guard who gets cast as Pontius Pilate in a modern-day gospel retelling.
Kate Malone: narrator of Laurie Halse Anderson’s amazingly powerful novel Catalyst.
Mae Tuck: matriarch of the titular immortal clan from Tuck Everlasting.
Annie Hughes: one of the main characters from The Iron Giant.
Kirsten Larson: one of the first characters from the American Girl series, an immigrant from Sweden who struggles to acclimate to the United States.
Adah Price: one of the co-narrators of The Poisonwood Bible, a disabled polymath who loves palindromes and puzzles.
Iris Chase: a society lady and heiress from The Blind Assassin, which chronicles family dysfunction and its unique impact on women over several generations.
Dawn Schafer: part of the enormous rotating cast of protagonists from The Babysitters’ Club series, and one of my favorite characters as a kid.
Henry Case: main character of the genre-creating cyberpunk novel Neuromancer.
Parvana Weera: a tough, outgoing young woman whose struggle to keep her family safe during the American invasion of her home in Afghanistan forms the main plot of The Breadwinner.
Raven Madison: main character of Vampire Kisses, who spends a little too much time in her intense fantasy worlds and not quite enough connected to reality.
Mr. [Bob] Grey: pseudonym used by the creature also known as Pennywise the Clown and simply “It” in several of Stephen King’s novels.
Ms. [Mary] Logan: mother of the main character in Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, because I love that book.
Karana Nicoleño: although Karana, the main character of Island of the Blue Dolphins, doesn’t technically have a last name, her tribe is historically referred to as the Nicoleño.
Total Recall
Vicky Austin: main character of A Ring of Endless Light, a book about coming to terms with dying—and about the many complex shades of victim blaming that can occur in light of unquantifiable tragedy.
Samuel Cornick: roommate to the eponymous Mercy Thompson of the bestselling Patricia Briggs series, a werewolf-doctor who continuously struggles to find meaning in an excessively long life and one of my favorite characters of all time.
The Thing from Another World
Seth Clearwater: a minor character in Eclipse, one of the youngest werewolves of the Quileute pack.
Captain William Nasland: one of the more obscure characters to hold the title Captain America; retconned into the role following Steve Rogers’s “death” in 1945.  Acts as both a hero and a villain because he has a well-intentioned but also closed-minded idea of what Captain America should be.
Allison Chapman: main character of Sharing Sam, K.A. Applegate’s lesser-known novel about teenage basketball geeks who back their way into understanding the life, the universe, and everything.
Simon Grace: one of the main characters of the Spiderwick Chronicles.
Giselle Villard: one of the main characters from the Mystic comic book series who is awesome, tough... and more than a little power-hungry.
As far as I can tell, that’s it for the character names in Eleutherophobia.  I mentioned here why Marco’s last name is Alvarez and Cassie’s is Day in my series.  There are a few dozen other allusions as well (Tom and Bonnie bastardizing the “tears in the rain” speech from Blade Runner, Cassie quoting the epigraph from Home of the Brave, several nods to Remnants and Everworld and The One and Only Ivan, Marco making jokes about Lost World and Alien) and obviously all my fic titles are from classic sci-fi movies while all my song nods are The Best of 1990—2000, but as far as I know that’s it for allusions. If there are any that I missed, or that you’re still wondering about, let me know and I’ll happily clarify.
