Does Robert Carlyle, now 62, get his kit off in the new TV series of The Full Monty? ‘Nobody wants to see that,’ he says with a grin.

Robert Carlyle’s life has been defined by two remarkable characters: the explosively violent Begbie, and Gaz in The Full Monty. Here, he talks about his Glasgow childhood, Britpop hedonism – and playing the PM…

It was 1997, and Robert Carlyle was in his mid-30s, when he first played the stripping Sheffield steelworker Gaz in The Full Monty. Last year, to get ready to play him again – this time for an eight-part TV series – he sat himself down to watch the film. He seems slightly embarrassed to admit it – he’s not the kind of actor who likes to watch himself. “And I’m not about trawling back through something from 20-odd years ago,” he says. But The Full Monty was calling him to South Yorkshire, so trawl back he did. He decided that he would watch a few minutes, then he would move on. “And I sat there and watched the whole thing.” He was surprised to find that it still worked, even after 25 years. “I don’t know if I can say this, but I really enjoyed it. It really stands up.”

The original Full Monty told the story of six unemployed men from Sheffield who put on a DIY strip show at the working men’s club. It was an indie film, shot on a very small budget, and it almost went straight to video; a last-minute re-edit saved it from obscurity and it went on to be a staggering global success, making £200m at the box office. Carlyle’s Gaz is the ringleader, a schemer and a dreamer trying to keep enough money in his pocket to put the heating on when his son comes to stay.

I had misremembered it as a film about men getting their kit off, a bawdy hen night of British comedy. But rewatching it I was struck by how political it seems now. Three decades later, in the new series, people are still broke and Gaz is still scheming, but the working men’s club has shut down, the school is crumbling and children are going hungry.

‘I love it when I dive into a job. You’ve got a little family unit, you love each other to bits and you think you’re going to be friends forever’

“It’s easy to forget that the film is quite heavily political,” says Carlyle. “It makes a point. And I think the same applies to the TV show. These people have lived through what seems like 25 years of austerity.” He credits the writers, Simon Beaufoy and Alice Nutter, with its gallows humour. “But you see that the older people’s lives have been pretty tough for the past 25 years, and then there’s 20 years of what Simon calls the Young Montys, the younger characters, heading for the same shit. So it’s good that this has been made. It shows what people go through to survive the day to day.” Not just men getting their kit off, then. Does he strip this time? “Nobody wants to see that,” he says, with a grin.

Carlyle is a great talker, open and funny and relaxed. He admits he was not always this way, particularly when it came to the press, though he did have his reasons. He’s calmed down a lot since his wilder days, in part because he is, as he says, “125 years old” (he’s just turned 62, though he looks younger) and also because he now lives in Vancouver, on the west coast of Canada. “There’s a laid-back attitude and quality here I enjoy,” he says. He moved there to film a TV series, Once Upon a Time, in 2011, with his wife, Anastasia Shirley, and three children, and found that he liked the city, though he has kept a home in Glasgow, where he grew up, and the family splits its time between the two. His kids are 21, 19 and 17.

Do they have Canadian accents? “Aye, they do,” he laughs. “My eldest son’s got this strange – hang on, let me see if I can do it – this half-American thing with a bit of Scottish thrown in, you know?”

Carlyle is at his happiest when he’s at home. “I’m a homebody, there’s no doubt about that,” he says. “I’ve got loads of friends, particularly in London, and I enjoy it when I get to meet up with them. It’s brilliant. But I’ve always been a bit of a loner to be honest.” Carlyle was brought up by his father; his mother walked out when he was a child. He has spoken before about moving around a lot, living in communes. “I always think about it as darkness and light, my life, because the first part of it was pretty dark. My mother had left when I was a wee boy. I was brought up by my dad alone in Glasgow in the 60s, and the single- parent family, there was not a lot of that around, especially a single-parent family with a father. That made me instantly different from the rest of the people who were around me.” He seems surprised by his own candour. “Genuinely, I’ve never really spoken about this before. But I guess that’s probably where it started.”

I still love Begbie. It was such an explosion. An absolute avalanche

Did he feel like an outsider at school? “When I was very young, yeah, definitely. It’s the little things.” He has a teacher friend and he says he is pleased to hear that things are very different now. “But back in the day, if you had to get permission for something, the teachers would say, bring a note in from your mum. Stuff like that. Of course, when you don’t have that, that really hits home, even when you’re a wee boy.”

Carlyle left school at 16, became a painter and decorator, and worked with his dad. At 21, he came across a copy of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, and it lit something up inside him. He went on to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and set up his own theatre company. For a loner, he has picked a very sociable job.

“Yeah, but I’ve been doing it for so long that I’ve become very good at separating those things. I love it when I dive into a job, whether theatre, film, TV, whatever. You’ve got a little family unit, you love each other to bits and you think you’re going to be friends for ever. Then two months later you never see them again,” he laughs. Family means a lot to him. “I’d always wanted to have a good family unit, to be able to connect with each other and be pals with each other,” he says, talking about his three children. “Thankfully, we’re great friends.”

In 1991, he was cast as the lead in Ken Loach’s Riff-Raff, and worked steadily through the 90s, playing a serial killer in Cracker, which set the tone for more villainous roles to come. But nothing prepared him for the double whammy of playing the sadistic maniac Begbie in Trainspotting at the end of 1995 and Gaz in The Full Monty, 18 months later. “From that point on, they were massive shadows that then followed me around for the rest of my life, the rest of my career,” he says. “So it was something that I had to get used to, the whole fame thing. Because I am, as I’ve been saying, quite a homely guy, a family man, it took me a long time to get used to that.”

To say the films were hits is an understatement. Both were phenomena that travelled around the world. One of the strangest things about watching The Full Monty again, he says, is that it took him right back to that time. “It’s looking at yourself in another life, and all the things that were happening in my life back then. I mean, we can all look back in photographs, but I’ve got this living, breathing thing in front of me.”

What was happening in his life back then?

“Ha!” It was the height of the Britpop era, and because of those films, Carlyle was right at the heart of it. Back in the day, as he puts it, he was invited to everything and went to most of it. “I met all the personalities of the day, the Oasis lads, Damon Albarn, who’s still a great friend. I was right in the middle of that whole thing, enjoying that life.”

Was it as hedonistic as it seemed? He doesn’t pause for breath. “One thousand per cent,” he grins. “It was incredibly hedonistic, but it was exciting. If you think about it politically, we’d just come out of Tory rule. Blair was there, everything seemed to be on the up. And I can remember that feeling.” He appeared in an Oasis video, for the song Little By Little.

Was it easy to be friends with Blur and Oasis, given their famous rivalry? “Hahaha. To be honest with you, I was really good at not getting involved. But I remember when I did Little By Little, Damon was like, ‘Why the fuck did you do that? Come and do one for me!’ I said, ‘But you never asked,’ which was true! And that was the end of the conversation.”

“It doesn’t sound like you were a homebody in those days,” I say. He laughs again. “No,” he says. “There wasn’t so much homebody then. I certainly wasn’t shy in getting out the door.”

But there was a darker side to that era. His fame made him a person of interest to the tabloids. He says it’s nothing compared to what some people experienced, but still it sounds unpleasant.

“At the time, going through that was horrible, to be honest with you, because I didn’t understand it. I was suddenly in this world and I was very open. Probably too open, at times.” The papers responded by reporting on his private life and his family. “They got in touch with my mother and pulled her out the dark, and that was really upsetting. So I slammed the door shut for a long time, because I just hated it.” He was tight-lipped in interviews and wouldn’t do chatshows, though he will say he still regrets saying no to Michael Parkinson. “I think that was probably quite clever, because then you do keep a little bit of yourself. I mean, you see people on these chatshows and everything comes out and you go, ‘My God, I don’t know how you can live your life like that.’”

He does them these days, however. “Because I’m 125, I’m more used to it,” he jokes. “I can do it better now. Time and age is a great thing.”

Is it just time? Has he mellowed with age?

“It’s family, children. My children came in the 2000s, so all the stuff in the 90s, there were no kids then, but once children arrive in your life, everything changes overnight. So that becomes more important. That becomes your focus. And you begin to think, ‘Oh, the other stuff’s not actually worth bothering about.’”

Carlyle has had the chance to go back to two of his most iconic characters. He revisited Begbie for T2, the Trainspotting sequel, in 2017. A sequel was always planned, and Carlyle says he and Jonny Lee Miller, who plays Sickboy, wanted it to be sooner. “But Danny Boyle [the director] always said, we’ll do it, but when you’re older. He was obviously right, because it’s in the face. You can see that life has been lived.”

Even more so than Gaz, the terrifying Begbie is the character who has followed him around the longest. “The terrifying Begbie!” he laughs. “I love Begbie. I mean, who knew? Who knew what was going to happen with that character? It was such an explosion, Trainspotting. An absolute avalanche.” At the time, he knew that the film was going to be something special. “I thought this character is gonna be around for a while. But I thought, maybe a few years.” Yesterday, he says, he went to the butcher’s near his house, and the man in the shop, in his 20s, from Bilbao, recognised him and said he loved him in Trainspotting. “He said, ‘I’ve got a T-shirt of you, of Begbie with the glass.’ This thing I thought was going to last a few years, is still there, in people’s minds, 27 years later.” Wherever he goes now, people still recognise him as Begbie. “That mad character!” He’s not exactly a teddy bear, is he? “I mean, this is a line from the film – he’s a psycho, but he’s a mate, so what can you do? I do love him. And Gaz. Both these characters have given me a tremendous career and a tremendous life, and you’ve got to love him for that.”

Besides, Begbie’s not dead yet. There is a six-part TV series, The Blade Artist, in the planning, about Begbie’s post-prison life as an acclaimed artist in California. Carlyle is working on it with Irvine Welsh and Hex author Jenni Fagan.

“It’s been brilliant, this one. I mean, let’s face it, Begbie is me. So to be right in at the beginning of that and be able to go, well, actually, maybe change this, change that… that’s where we are at the moment.” He thinks they’ll start shooting in the next year or two.

For now, he’s off work, relaxing in Vancouver, travelling with his wife, spending time with his family. “Back in the day, it was all about the next job, next job, next job and I don’t think so much like that any more.”

Recently, he’s been playing the British prime minster, Robert Sutherland, in the political thriller Cobra. “Who would have thought? Begbie, Gaz, the prime minister…” he says. In the original Full Monty, Gaz explains that he can’t go shoplifting because “I’ve got serial killer written on my forehead.” Carlyle nods. “That’s right. That’s probably my issue with parts. Certainly with Sutherland, when he gets angry, I’ve got to really pull it down. Don’t get Begbie-angry,” he says. “Begbie as the prime minister!” I wouldn’t put it past him.

Parents are alive and well. They get along decently with Buttons, when they see him, that is.

Buttons is the oldest of 5 siblings. His parents both work night shifts so he’s responsible for making sure his sister Elanor does her schoolwork because she’s the only one in school. Make sure his twin sisters Adelaide and Alana do not destroy the house because they love chaos. And give constant attention to his baby brother Alvin who requires bottles, changing, and supervision.

As exhausting as it is to be a newsie during the day and a housekeeper at night, it does come with the benefit of having a house completely to himself after 10 pm once all his siblings are in bed.

Parents are alive and well. Moved to America from Poland for more opportunities. They overlook Elmer a lot because of their large family but still expect him to help provide for them, as they do of all their working children, since funds are always tight. Neutral relationship.

Victor: Brother, Age 28.

Cherish: Sister, Age 27.

Oswald: Brother, Age 26.

Evelyn: Sister, Age 21.

Elmer: Age 18.

Elmer is the youngest of 9 children. He only truly gets along with his eldest sister, Cherish, and has a neutral relationship with the rest.

A typical night at Elmer's Household:

Gus, Horace, and his father are all arguing in deafening Polish about Horace’s new job as a blacksmith. Their father is fighting against it, his argument being that, as Horace is the second eldest, he needed him support the family and metalwork was dangerous. What if he injured a hand? Gus, the very eldest, takes Horace’s side and yells that this is how Horace is supporting the family. What is he supposed to do, go back to inventory at the grocery store? Good paying jobs were hard to find when English was hard to speak. Elmer winces as their voices get louder. Everything is screamed and nothing is heard.

Victor is helping move firewood inside the house but the more he brings in the less space there becomes and everyone is already tripping over each other. Plus, his cigar is fogging up the place. Cherish is in the kitchen with his mother, frantically cooking dinner as too many things are boiling and burning. She is the only one who notices Elmer come in and quickly kisses him on the cheek and welcomes him home. When she asks Elmer if he could help peel some carrots for her he does because she’s his favorite sibling and he’s not afraid to admit it. She’s the only one who is nice to him. But soon the kitchen gets too crowded and Elmer is quite literally pushed out of it.

Oswald, Evelyn, Wilma, and Felix are in the bedroom, taking up the only sitting space that’s not the kitchen table. It has been about two months since Elmer has been home after five o’ clock and instead of recognizing this a positive thing, Oswald sits up and demands the two cents that Elmer once borrowed from him for papers. When Elmer tells him he doesn’t have it, Wilma scrunches her nose and says, “He has it. How else is he gonna buy papes tomorrow?” And all it takes is one hard shove in the chest from Oswald to get Elmer to surrender it. He’d have to find a way to charm Wiesel into spotting him some papes tomorrow. On the way out of the room he says hello to Felix, the next closest to him in age, but Felix just looks like he’s never seen him before and Elmer feels unwelcome.

Dinner is is a combination of watered down soup and high tensions. There are not enough chairs so Elmer eats standing in the corner along with Evelyn and Victor. Fortunately, three seats do free up mid-dinner, but it comes at the price of Horace storming outside after throwing down his napkin with Gus and his father following him out.

It’s not always like this, sometimes they all get along just fine. He loves his family, but at times they make it very hard for him to do so. Elmer’s heart aches to not feel so alone in a house too crowded to notice whether he’s there or not. Quietly, he shoves his hands in his pockets and heads back out into the frigid winter midnight, deciding he’d rather sleep at the lodging house instead.

Headcanon: Sloane's Kids - Hamza, Artemis, Orion and Zohreh

Everyone who has read my fics kinda knows I have three separate universes for PM, with some commonalities. One in which my MC dates only Hayden, and two in which they date all the LIs. Hayden and Sloane in two of these universes also actively date other people. So in all universes, Khaan is someone Sloane has a relationship with, as well as Alana. I do plan to develop a "childhood sweetheart"-like character for her sometime in the future as well. So Hamza definitely is like a firstborn child to her, even though Khaan and Sloane don't exactly marry.

Sloane has three other children, twins from a fertility treatment as well as one daughter with Khaan many years later.

I see Sloane starting out trying to emulate Kim because she's such a fantastic role model, but she eventually gets her own groove and realizes she will be a different kind of parent and that's okay. Where Kim was more intuitive, Sloane is a consummate planner and she does bring that kind of energy into her parenting.

Hamza Mousavi

• Born to an Iranian father and a Filipino mother, Hamza spent his first five years constantly moving house because his father Khaan constantly feared that Hamza would be targeted by Eros. Most of those early years feel like a bit of a blur in later life, because once the group entered their lives, things became far more settled for them.

• Hamza took an instant liking to Sloane the moment he saw her. She was shy and smart, was always sweet to him and tried to make healthy treats he would like, and clearly adored his dad. He definitely encouraged Khaan a bit to ask her out (in all universes).

• Hamza obviously is the oldest of the kids that came from the group, and revels in that fact. He is quite fond of bossing the kids around a little 😄

• His dinosaur-love eventually becomes a fascination for mythical beasts in general in later years. Unsurprisingly, his favourite genre for books is fantasy.

• At some point, Sloane revives her writing hobby, and starts writing books for children. Largely with Nadia's encouragement (she promises to do illustrations if Sloane completes a manuscript). Hamza very enthusiastically becomes the test audience for her first book before she sends it to publishers!

• Hamza got his love for healthy treats and a balanced diet from his father Khaan. It's an interest he grows up with. As an adult, he becomes a very sought-after nutritionist (to the initial chagrin of his siblings and cousins 😂)

Artemis Washington

(FC - Arsema Thomas)

• Artemis and her twin brother Orion were born around 3 and a half years after the events of the second book. Like her mother Kim, Sloane did want to have kids at that point, but wasn't ready to have a kid with the people she was dating. She did talk it over with them tho and instantly had everyone's support before she took the plunge.

• The names were of course a suggestion from all the Hayden's in all my universes 😄 Mostly coz Sloane had always loved that story, even before they came along.

• Arty loved to mix and match different pieces in her outfits from the time she was a kid, including a phase where she wanted to wear colourful underwear over her onesies at home coz it made her look like Superman. She was also known for layering different clothes over each other - there was a point at age 4 where she wore a onesie, wore a T-shirt over that, wore bright rainbow leggings over THAT, and completed that look with unicorn-printed shorts. In summer.

• She gets into haircare and makeup as an adult. Loves testing out different products and inventing new looks. I think she builds a brand of her own much later in her late 20s, when she is more confident of her expertise in the business.

• Her favourite film is the animated beauty "Hair Love".

Orion Washington

(FC - Kelvin Harrison Jr)

• Sloane always feels that Ori took after his Nana Kim in a lot of ways

• He loves cooking, and when he gets older loves experimenting with teas!

• Like Sloane, his favourite meal is also a DC Smoke.

• He loved being in the kitchen, loved mixing and matching things there. Sloane, Khaan and Alana would often find grapes in their cups of tea/coffee, an innovation 4 year old Ori would take pride in 😂

• Cooking is really this guy's love language. He does grow up to become a chef later on, joining culinary school early on.

• At some point both he and Hamza teamed up for a "Hello Fresh"-like initiative, where Orion would devise affordable and healthy meal kits, while Hamza assisted with consulting for meal plans!

Zohreh Washington-Mousavi

(FC- Yara Shahidi)

• Zo is five years younger than Artemis and Orion, and fourteen years Hamza's junior. The three of them did spoil their baby sister quite a bit in the early years 😂 She could bat her eyelashes and get away with practically anything - that was also a perk of being the youngest among the entire group of kids!

• Like her twin siblings, Zo's name was also astronomy-based. Artemis is a Greek name for the moon goddess, Orion is a constellation and Zohreh is the Persian name for Venus.

• The kids of the group (Hayden x MC's kids, Nadia and Steve's kids and Sloane and Khaan's kids) do have their own stargazing parties! All of them love looking out for rare astronomical finds, and have their fave constellations. Zo, tho, has a more scientific interest and cultivates it from an early age.

• Zohreh has her mother's interest in Astrophysics and both her parents' interest in tech, so she does actually enroll into NASA as an adult. She takes on a paid internship through the Pathways program after graduating, and that transitions into a full job there.

• Her favourite planetarium is the Hayden Planetarium in NY.

• Arty did plenty of hairstyling experiments on her baby sister as she reached her teens. That still doesn't change when they're adults and Zo has had a number of her friends vie and pay anything for her older sister's services after seeing her amazing hairstyles.

• Zo's fave dish that Orion has made is a Persian fusion dish - saffron chicken wings.

Family HCs:

• Sloane never actually marries, but she's pretty happy with the life she gets to live with the MC (in my poly universes), Khaan and regular visits from Alana.

• All my Haydens, and Sloane, are still close, and they're in fact is Orion's godmother/father in every universe. The MC is the same for Artemis. Nadia and Alana become Zo's godma's years later.

• As a kid Sloane always kept a stress corner for herself with things that would both calm her down and help her with stimming. She does keep one in the house for her kids and it really works for them.

• Hayden(s) kids, MC's kids, Sloane's kids and Nadia's kids all love to form their own group in every universe. Initially inspired by Hamza's stories about their parents, they also band together and envision scenarios where they can save the world 😁 Hamza is undoubtedly the leader haha, he keeps things from getting too out of hand.

• Sloane already looks up to Kim, but she does so even more after becoming a mother. She definitely does come to her for advice and suggestions from time to time.

⸻ Born in new orleans , LA to Alana, a religious woman, and John, a military legacy who worked hard to be named chief for the locak authirities. Diana was their second child, the first being Dean who is eight years older than her. Growing up, John always expected his children to go into the military as he did and his family line before him. From the day she and her older brother could walk, they were trained in hand to hand and weaponry. Being part of a military family legacy was never easy for Diana. Especially with a controlling religious mother. They never had time for themselves. Between the lessons, their father would leave them for when he comes back and going to church every Sunday, and having prayer groups.

⸻ Diana always felt left out. From a young age, Diana already knew she didn’t want to be like her father or keep to the family legacy, nor was she as religious as her mother. She did, however, knew she wanted to play all string instruments to which her mother happily encouraged. Because her parents were always busy, Diana was always left on her own after school and after practice waiting until her older brother would pick her up.

⸻ As she grew, Diana would find ways to excuse herself from going to the prayer groups. Although, there was never a way to excuse herself in her father’s lessons and training. Which ironically enough, she surpassed her oldest brother. She figured that if she’s better, she would have more time for herself and her cello. Often making deals with her father which would grant her permission to join her school cheerleading, volleyball, and powder puff during her senior year. Graduating at sixteen, Diana was still two years shy of being able to enlist. Taking this chance to go off to college and pursue what she wanted to do. Her father rejecting the idea refused to help her out financially. This led her to make the decision to run away from home. Which proved to be tough when it came to having her father be the chief of police and had all eyes in search of her.  

⸻ Diana worked hard to come up with the money to go through school. Her Grandmother secretly helping her with the money earned at her family bakery who was from ravenspeak. Living with her best friend who was far older than her and helped her get a job at the strip club as a bartender using a fake ID. Taking her classes in the afternoon, by 11 pm she would be working at the strip club, and by 4 am she would be home asleep. On her days off she would work on her homework. It was hard for the first year but she soon came accustom to her schedule. Two years seems to pass by quickly earning her bachelor’s degree.  Her next goal was her master’s.

⸻ Soon enough it came to be easier when her first love came into her life. Meeting during her night off when she was waiting for her best friend at the strip club studying, he found it odd not to mention he found her quite breathtaking. Hellos were said more often then they turned into good mornings when waking up next to each other. Even helping her out financially once he found out what she did to get money to pay for her school. Being territorial as he was, unknown to her that he was in fact a werewolf, Diana regarded it in it is normal. If she were a guy, she wouldn’t want her girlfriend to be working at the strip club, even as a bartender.

⸻ Time has passed now and while she kept in touch with her parents and brother, she was now living with her boyfriend. Her father was still angry at the fact that she would not enlist but was still happy to have her back in his life. She was happy and her first love being one of the many points of it. Although she started to worry over the fact that he wouldn’t come home once a month. Of course, one of his jealous ex putting it in her head that he was cheating, telling her to follow, to her curiosity she did.

⸻ Upon arriving her best friend and she ventured into the wooded area, worried and unsure what to expect to see before she heard voices. Her eyes widen at the sight before her. People turning into wolves. Among them was him and he shifted. The she-wolf who had every intention of killing Diana took her chance to attack. Killing her best friend, Diana screaming out before he got in the way.  

⸻ Unaware of the whole situation and only catching the scent of human blood attacked and bit Diana believing they were under attack because of his ex’s actions. It wouldn’t be the first time one would attack them during the full moon. It was another wolf who was in control, who stopped him from doing anything further but it was far too late. diana’s heart was barely there and faint. Knowing she would die either way as they deemed her weak and was positive she wouldn’t survive a change thus leaving her there when they heard someone coming.

⸻ Diana had woken up in the hospital bed with her parents and brother beside her. Worried and clearly crying, they were relieved when she woke up. She had been out for 3 days. Telling her a little while longer and she would have been dead if one of the patrols who were in the area at the time heard them scream and took her to the hospital. Unfortunately, it was too late for her best friend. Going home with her family without so much as telling the school or anyone for that matter, rumors spread about the fact that she died along with her best friend as the news released little details on the attack.

⸻ For the next three weeks, Diana felt strange. Hearing things she normally wouldn’t hear. Smelling scents that she wouldn’t normally smell. Was stronger than she normally was. All those feelings she had that she couldn’t explain made her grow temperamental. Not understanding what was happening to her before her first full moon.

⸻ Diana had shifted spontaneously for the first time. Animalistic instinct took over and she attacked anything that got near her.  Waking up the next morning bare, covered in blood, ad their home destroyed. it wasn’t until she saw her parent’s body and her brother was when she realized what she had done. Memories of last night coming to her. She had turned. She shifted into a wolf and killed her parents and brother. The weight of it caused a pit in her stomach. Running about her house before letting out a scream in emotional pain. She was angry. She was in pain. She needed to do something. She anonymously called the police before leaving the city she grew up in and loved.

⸻ Deciding to honor her father and brother’s memory, she did what they wanted her to do. Continue the bishop legacy. Taking both their tags and wearing them, Diana enlisted into the marines. Where her father’s constant training came in handy. Being far advance despite her age not to mention her newfound species change and being a new recruit, Diana proved herself to be more than a pretty face. What she earned, were all sent to her grandmother, joy, and her cafe shop in ravenspeak. Keeping in touch with her only family left.  

⸻ She constantly had to keep her temper in check and it had gotten the best of her sometimes. Sneaking out during the full moons out to the woods. Spending time serving for the marines, Diana accepted herself for who and what she is. Embracing the fact that she was a werewolf and coming to terms that she had killed her family. yet she still somewhat gelt guilt over it . 

⸻ it was about three years ago that she got a call from the hospital. Her grandmother had suffered from a stroke. Going to ravenspeak , a town anyone barely knew about , let alone one to find on the map. Her grandmother, making sure her will were in order should she pass away before her time, gave over the cafe to diana. the she wolf was now aware of the world hidden from humans and how naïve they all were before her turning. Her grandmother, knowing, diana is now taking care of the woman and the cafe shop.   she has a lot to learn and is no longer bound by mundane rules but others that are made for creatures that go bump in the night.

the biggest thing I dislike when people write will graham is that they make him innocent. that, or they make him completely vicious- a man who craves blood just for the taste, with no regard for humanity all because Hannibal Lecter came by and "unlocked" something. this post doesn't cover s3 but my reblog later will😊😊🙏 lots more below the cut

from the very start of the show, you know will is different. it's a key point. he's a professor. he's not a special agent. he TRIED to be a special agent and he was denied entry to the FBI on the basis of instability, and yet jack still calls for him. he still has him go into this, and I'd argue that he uses intimidation to keep him there. he's not asking nicely, by any means!!! in aperitif jack practically threatens him in the bathroom. he ambushes him when he's alone, pressuring him and targeting him when he's vulnerable and alone.

at several points in the show you can see him deteriorating, and I don't mean the Roti type seizures and whatnot. i mean when him and Jack are in the alleyway and he has his small outburst. when he tells everyone over and over that he doesn't think this is good for him, that he is going to stop being able to help. when he says he can see but the thinking is shutting down. in aperitif jack says he knows will deals with massive amounts of fear, that he knows he can't fully cover him and that he knows he can't keep him entirely protected.

him and alana and practically everyone else in the show consistently shows a lack of care for will. they speak of will like a dog aching to bite. like a little case for them to fixate on. one of the first conversations we see about will in his absence begins with jack commenting on how he trusts alana not to mistreat him and how he trusts her not to play "mind games" on him. alana says anything about him would have to be published posthumously. he immediately assumes hannibal is trying to profile him in aperitif (rightly so. bc. he is😭😭). is it ANY wonder that he grows hateful?? the dog caged and beaten is bound to want to bite, no matter how good you muzzle him.

I don't deny that will IS predisposed to his cruelty. even in aperitif you can tell he isn't the friendliest, but at the same time there's ALSO no denying that his experiences after that are a big reason. it didn't show up out of nowhere but hey!! when your gay lover therapist hypnotizes you and melts your brain and induces a fuck ton of seizures mid-session, you're BOUND go to a bit off the rails!! maybe I'm just repeating myself, but it makes sense in my head and that's what matters to me because it's 10 pm and my brain is shutting off

it wouldn’t be a lie if they said they practically lived at school. if anything, sasha was pretty certain they spent half, if not more, of their time at school. either by training (mostly) or by crashing other colleague’s classes. trainers usually didn’t have that many classes as the regular subject teachers had. just imagine having 5 to 7 classes of combat training a day. even sasha would faint from that excess of physical activity. but that’s what was so wonderful. right after they finished their sessions, sasha would stick around the school and join other classes that were taking place at that time. and it just happened that sasha had their eyes on a particular biology teacher. she looked around their age, although sasha couldn’t quite put their finger whether they remembered her from their school days. nevertheless, she caught their interest after hearing how most of the students were praising the woman for this and that. by then sasha was quite used to being the favorite trainer, but unfortunately their ego didn’t stop extending there. they wanted more. oh, so much more. and this was their perfect opportunity to explore and investigate what was it about miss lutyens.

that day in particular sasha only got to overhear a small part of alana’s lecture, right before it ended which left a quite disappointed pout on their face. they were late. at least it wasn’t their fault. it was that fool toni always wasting their time, getting on their nerves and all that... they basically got lost in time at this point. but they were going to make up for it.  they swore themselves that much. just when the lecture ended, sasha was going to slip inside the classroom to check up on their colleague, but alana seemed to be in a rush. why? but most importantly... where to? deciding on the spot to find out, the trainer sprinted towards the end of the hallway and hid behind one of the side walls there, waiting for the biology teacher to leave the classroom. they’d follow her from there. and they did. but the location they discovered alana aimed to go to surprised them quite a bit, if they were being honest.

the woods seemed very unusual spot for someone like miss lutyens. sasha for some reason couldn’t imagine her sneaking outside of the qz just like that. it was clear she wasn’t doing it for the first time. all of the remaining questions they still had dancing in their head faded away the moment sasha spotted that unique bow she took off and a couple of arrows she pulled out of her backpack. someone was into archery, as it seemed. that only peaked sasha’s interest even more so to the point where they approached her more, but kept a considerate distance between them. they didn’t want to disturb her. no. they wanted to watch. they liked watching people, getting to know them in their own odd way. and when those people were by themselves it was even better because that’s when they got to be their most vulnerable... most intimate selves. that’s what sasha wanted to see. get to know. alana’s most honest, intimate, truest self.

sasha narrowed their eyes, now focusing solely on alana’s aim, the way she held the bow, how it seemed to melt into her, like it was made specifically to fit her touch. it all was so fascinating. the expression on her face was that of intense focus. determination. they knew that look well. she was dedicated to it. that’s how they all had to be in order to become good at something. anything. just before alana let loose of her first arrow, she held her breath. and so did sasha. they watched the arrow pierce the air so smoothly you could barely hear it. that is until it hit one of the trees further out. there was no need for sasha to inspect any longer. alana was good at what she was doing. maybe, too good for her own good.    ❝  not bad. for a biology teacher.   ❞  sasha being impressed was not a regular thing. yet it happened. she managed to catch them off guard. good. they liked that. however, the startled look that now was displayed all over her face and body language, made them think on their feet.   ❝  a friendly face... see? a familiar one at that.  ❞  they pointed at their own face while shooting their cheeky grin in attempt to calm the other down. maybe following her all the way here and sneaking up on her in the woods was not the smartest idea, after all.
