Dimanche 14 mai à Maure de Bretagne, Jasper du Bellay a fait preuve de ses qualités habituelles (maniable, sûr d’allure et accrocheur) pour poursuivre une impressionante série: il a fini sur le podium lors de ses 5 dernières sorties ! Bravo à Cédric Mégissier pour ce remarquable travail. VIDEO

Dimanche 14 à Vichy, Haria du Bellay a connu une désillusion en finissant 6° d’une course dont elle était favorite. On a trouvé les choix d’Alexandre Abrivard un peu étonnants mais nul n’est infaillible... VIDEO

Dimanche 14 à Carpentras, Icare du Bellay, associé à Yannick Alain Briand a fait une sortie très convaincante et aurait pu faire encore mieux que quatrième avec un peu plus de réussite dans le parcours.

Toujours Dimanche, à Meral, Itea du Bellay s’est totalement arrêtée dans le dernier tournant. On se demande si la team Goetz va réussir à lui redonner l’envie de se bagarrer.

Mardi 16 mai à Beaumont de Lomagne, Grazia et Jean Luc Vayr ont fini le parcours en retrait. Grazia peine à retrouver son niveau mais semble en amélioration tout de même.

Jeudi 18 à Avignon, deuxième course de rentrée pour Itak du Bellay, et il n’a pas été très rassurant, se fâchant au départ et étant disqualifié d’entrée. Son comportement en retrait a été correct mais il va falloir un peu de temps pour revoir le vrai Itak.

Vendredi 19 au Mont Saint Michel, Haïda du Bellay a fait une bonne rentrée. Elle a pris le meilleur départ des chevaux des 25m, est restée dans le peloton et a proprement fini prenant la septième place et marchant 15. Sérieuse comme d’habitude.

A VENIR  

Samedi 20 à Caen, Go for Bellay va retrouver sa “routine” des 2450 m. Il visera une belle place.

Dimanche 21 mai, Java sera à Rambouillet pour tenter d’enchaîner après son excellente rentrée et Janga sera à Cluny pour enfin nous montrer ce qu’elle vaut (elle travaille bien mais ne concrétise pas en course pour l’instant).

Mercredi 24 mai, nos regards seront tournés vers Salon de Provence puisque Jericho tentera de poursuivre sa belle progression et Haltea tentera sa chance au monté dans une course visée.

Jeudi 25 mai, on se réjouit de voir le retour de Kaleo du Bellay. Ce fils de Cinna avait couru très jeune et montré des choses intéressantes. Il a le moyens de faire une belle année.

Thank You FilmStruck

As a film lover, I am absolutely distraught that FilmStruck’s swan song is in seven days. The creativity and passion used when putting films on the streaming site was absolutely apparent and for a film lover, it was refreshing.

This streaming service has been great in introducing me to films I would have never even thought of watching. So, as my ode to FilmStruck, I am going to list the top 15 films that I watched on the service that touched me in some way or another (and it was so hard just to pick 15). 

So here are my top 15 films that I watched on FilmStruck that I think everyone should check out and they are in no particular order:

1. Norma Rae (1979) - Starring Sally Field, Beau Bridges, and Don Leibman

Sally Field plays a single mother who helps unionize the textile factory she works at, even though there is great risk and danger involved. 

Why you should watch it: Sally Field is so inspiring as Norma Rae! She absolutely deserved the Oscar she won for that role. Also, girl power and unionizing is awesome!!

2. Bicycle Thieves (1948) - Starring Lamberto Maggiorani and Enzo Staiola

A working-class family man has his bicycle stolen, which  he needs for the job he finally got in depressed post-War World II Italy. Thus, he takes his son on his journey to find his bicycle. 

Why you should watch it: This story is such a heartbreakingly beautiful tale. The emotion that both Maggiorani and Staiola convey really help the audience feel their pain. The film also takes you all over the streets of Italy, which is fantastic. 

3. The Crowd (1928) - Starring James Murray and Eleanor Boardman

The story of a man and woman who fall in love and get married. However, the husband’s unhappiness with their small apartment, being a small fish in a big pond, and his in-laws disapproval could be the downfall of their marriage.

Why you should watch it: Even though this film is from the 1920s, some of the concepts can be placed in any time period. The situations that the husband and wife go through could happen to any working-class family. Also, King Vidor did some amazing directing and some of the shots he set up are just spectacular. 

4. La Notte (1961) - Starring Jeanne Moreau, Marcello Mastroianni, and Monica Vitti

A married couple’s deteriorating marriage is magnified through one day and one night. The two flirt with other people and have to truly realize their personal problems.

Why you should watch it: Michaelangelo Antonioni does a brilliant job in capturing this couple and their unraveling relationship. Also Mastroianni and Moreau are fantastic as the couple. Not all movies have the happiest of endings, but that is what makes them, and this film, so realistic. Life isn’t always happiness.

5. The Nights of Cabiria (1957) - Starring Guiletta Masina, Francois Perrier, and Franca Marzi

A prostitute desperately wants love, but all she gets from men is extreme heartbreak. 

Why you should watch it: Guiletta Masina is FANTASTIC as Cabiria! Oh my gosh, she is so good at making Cabiria a sympathetic character. Also, who doesn’t love a good story about a hooker with a heart of gold?

6. What’s Up, Doc? (1972) - Starring Ryan O’Neal, Barbara Streisand, and Madeline Kahn

A zany Screwball Comedy that involves 4 plaid bags that all contain different contents. Each bag is important in its own way and causes so much confusion, it’s hysterical.

Why you should watch it: This movie is so zany. That is the only way to describe it. Barbara Streisand and Ryan O’Neal are great at comedy! And this is Madeline Kahn’s first feature film! I also never realized there were Screwball Comedies made in the ‘70s.

7. Le Samourai (1967) - Starring Alain Delon, Francois Perier, and Nathalie Delon

A professional hit man makes a hit but has witnesses. He tries his best to make an alibi for himself, but ends up getting entangled in the web of his witnesses. 

Why you should watch it: This film is badass! Even though it is French, this film has major Japanese Samurai film influences! Also, it was my first introduction to the amazing Alain Delon and he is such a fantastic actor.  

8. Shadows (1958) - Starring Ben Carruthers, Leila Goldoni, and Hugh Hurd

It’s the Beat-era in New York! Jazz is used throughout the film to help explore interracial relationships and friendships. 

Why you should watch it: This is John Cassavetes’s directorial debut and he uses jazz and jump shots to give us a feeling of the fast paced life the characters are living. Also this film was made in the late ‘50s and was absolutely revolutionary for its time. No one wanted to honestly address racism, and Cassavetes (who is a white man) is very honest about the subject. 

9. Sunflower (1970) - Starring Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni

An Italian couple gets married right before WWII. The husband gets drafted and never comes home. The wife goes on a journey to find him and realizes he is still alive, in Russia, living a new life.

Why you should watch it: This film WILL break your heart. But if a film doesn’t make you feel any emotion, then what’s the point of watching it? Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni are magnificent in this film! Also the cinematography is breathtaking. Audiences witness Italy and Russia as if they are there. 

10. History Is Made at Night (1937) - Starring Jean Arthur, Charles Boyer, and Leo Carillo

A divorcee falls in love with a French man but her insanely jealous ex-husband will spare no measure to keep her from moving on.

Why you should watch it: This film has Charles Boyer at his best. He portrays charm, silliness, and determination so well. Also Colin Clive is so sinister as the ex-husband, he is the best antagonist. Jean Arthur is vulnerable as the woman who wants to be free. There is also a great bit with a hand with a face drawn on it.

11. He Who Gets Slapped (1924) - Starring Lon Chaney, Norma Shearer, and John Gilbert

A professor is betrayed by a count and leaves his old life to become a clown. He then tries to save a young woman he loves from falling into the count’s web.

Why you should watch it: Lon Chaney will break your heart. He does such a good job at playing a clown who seems to always be smiling, but in reality is in so much emotional pain. Also Norma Shearer and John Gilbert together are absolutely electric. They are both so young and so good looking.

12. Belle de Jour (1967) - Starring Catherine Deneuve, Jean Sorel, and Michel Piccoli

A frigid housewife takes a daytime job as a prostitute. 

Why you should watch it: This movie is wild!! The housewife who won’t even touch her husband becoming a prostitute? That’s such a randomly satisfying story line. Also, Deneuve’s Severine has very interesting dreams that blur reality and fantasy. 

13. Cluny Brown (1946) - Starring Jennifer Jones, Charles Boyer, and Peter Lawford

Cluny Brown is a parlor maid who just wants to be a plumber. When she meets Czech refugee Adam Belinski, their zany shenanigans shake up an English village. 

Why you should watch it: Jennifer Jones is perfect as Cluny! She plays her with a naivety that is just refreshing and funny. Charles Boyer as Professor Belinski is great too because he is a man of great knowledge who isn’t afraid to be unconventional. It also hilarious seeing Cluny fix plumbing problems.

14. Keep Your Powder Dry (1945) - Starring Lana Turner, Laraine Day, and Susan Peters

Three very different women try to adjust to their lives in the Women’s Army Corps. 

Why you should watch it: A lot of WWII films talk about men in the army. This film is one of two that I know of that talk about the women in the army. It is also interesting to see the three different women who have to tolerate each other in such close quarters. Also, I like seeing Lana Turner in a role that is not super dramatic and her being someone’s love interest the whole film. 

15. Too Bad She’s Bad (1955) - Starring Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni and Vittorio De Sica 

A young thief and her accomplices try to steal a cab driver’s cab. However, the cab driver, the thief, and her thieving family just can’t seem to stay away from each other.

Why you should watch it: Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni in a COMEDY? Yes, I will have seconds. I love their comedic timing together. Also, there are so many shenanigans in this film that are just fantastic to watch unravel. 

Thank you FilmStruck for introducing me to so many films I wouldn’t have had the access to if it weren’t for you. Thank you to all of the talented people who worked so hard to create a truly unique experience for film lovers. I will miss FilmStruck so much.

Lydia (1941)

Poor Lydia! Well, she was a successful woman who did well for deaf children but so many men loved her and the one she truly loved DID HER DIRTY. I thought Merle Oberon was absolutely charming at the lead character! Just know that the last ten minutes will make you angry. And also know that this film is very hard to come by and if it is on TCM, I recommend DVRing it or watching it!

Keep Your Powder Dry (1945)

This film is a huge serving of GIRL POWER and I was all about it. Not many WWII films really talk about the WACs, and that’s a shame. This film had so many great aspects and I loved watching Lana Turner being a strong woman and not necessarily one who needed a man. I also got a kick out of the women showing the male officer that girls can do anything boys do!

Cluny Brown (1946)

I had no clue what to expect when I first turned this film on. But I was sold the second I saw Cluny Brown plumbing. I also love how whimsical Charles Boyer and Jennifer Jones are during this film. In a way, Cluny has the sprouting of some feminist ideas since she wants to be a plumber, even though that’s technically not proper for a lady(and yes I realize that she doesn’t really fulfill the feminist idea of doing exactly what she wants career wise). This film was quite fun and I absolutely recommend it!

1950s - 2

Indiscretion of An American Wife (1953)

What a melodrama! I must admit, I really just enjoyed watching Montgomery Clift play an Italian man. The tenderness and anger he brought to this character made it so raw! I just wish Jennifer Jones’s character would have hit him back when he hit her, but it was the ‘50s so I am wanting too much. If you are a fan of the two actors, this is a good film to watch once. Will I watch it again? Nah. 

Too Bad She’s Bad (1955)

Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni can do no wrong, especially when they are together. It is also fun to see that this is the first film they worked on together, and the electricity was just automatically there. The plot is fun and their acting is so great. Such a fantastic comedy!

1960s - 4

The Honeymoon Machine (1961)

I can understand why King of Cool Steve McQueen despised this movie. Yes it is fun, but it is also all over the place! There are so many subplots going on that the movie is so hectic! Jim Hutton was great at the second banana of the operation but not even him and Steve McQueen could get rid of the cheese factor of this film.                                                                                                    

  L’Eclisse (1962)

A/N: I hated the one scene where Vittoria and her friend go over to her neighbor’s. I do not agree with them using blackface, making fun of black people, or using slurs. If this scene was cut out of the movie, then it would be perfect. It has nothing to do with the plot.

Alain Delon and Monica Vitti were great together in this film. It was interesting though that towards the beginning of their love story, there is the focus of Piero’s (Delon) materialism but once the two fall in love, there is less focus on it. However Vittoria (Vitti) can’t let it go. The film has an interesting way of setting up doom at the end. I enjoyed the film for the most part, except for the scene mentioned above. 

Period of Adjustment (1962)

EVERYONE IN THIS FILM IS SO STUBBORN MY GOD! I was getting so frustrated! George (Jim Hutton) and Isabel (Jane Fonda) shouldn’t have been married at all with the way they treat each other. All they do is yell! And Dorothea (Lois Nettleton) is way too good for Ralph (Tony Franciosa). But of course, everything ends happily ever after. Except for me because I was frustrated haha.

Belle De Jour (1967)

A timid housewife who becomes a prostitute? I am down for it! This film was wild. Absolutely wild! The way director Luis Bunuel has Severine/Belle de Jour (Catherine Deneuve) combine fantasy with reality makes the audience wonder what is really happening to her and what she is just imagining. I enjoyed every minute of this film!

1970s - 3

Scarecrow (1973)

Gene Hackman and Al Pacino are two of the most random actors to be in a film together, but they made watching this film a great experience. In my opinion, Al Pacino stole the show! The characters in this film have so many dimensions and just when you think you know them, they surprise you. That’s called superb scriptwriting. 

The Drowning Pool (1975)

Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, and Tony Franciosa together again (if you haven’t see The Long, Hot Summer from 1958, you are missing out on some great Tennessee Williams spiciness). I will admit, I enjoyed the first Lew Harper film better but this one was still a good Film Noir/Detective Film. The scene with the pool was so well done and absolutely terrifying! 

A Special Day (1977)

At first, I didn’t plan on watching this film. I don’t exactly know why, but it just wasn’t really on my watchlist. Well, when I watched Sophia Loren: Live at the TCM Film Festival in 2016, she mentioned this was one of her favorite films that she was in. So I watched it, and boy was I glad I did! I LOVED THIS FILM. It was so beautifully done in so many ways. The tinting of the film was such a great choice, because it gives this sort of ominous feeling to the whole film. Also Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroiani are fantastic together, yet again.

Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001)

When I first finished this movie, I had no clue if I liked it or not, which sounds weird considering I watched it. I had to think about what the film involved before truly deciding if I liked it or not. I came to the conclusion that I loved this film. Yes, there is a lot of intensely graphic sex scenes (so just don’t watch this with your parents), but since I am an adult, it didn’t bother me. The themes of sexuality, politics, class-ism, and mortality are very prominent and blend well into the story. Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna, and Maribel Verdu were phenomenal as the trio going on a journey together. This is truly an art film!

2010s - 2

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

I don’t care what other people say, I loved this movie! I understand that there were historical inaccuracies, but this is a cinematic representation of Queen and for continuity, changes were made. With that being said, GIVE RAMI MALEK ALL THE AWARDS!!! Also, Gwilym Lee LOOKED JUST LIKE BRIAN MAY. I just felt like this was a great film and seeing it on the big screen and hearing the music was a great experience.

Green Book (2018)

VIGGO MORTENSEN AND MAHERSHALA ALI WERE SO GREAT TOGETHER IN THIS FILM! This film could have been depressing, but the two main actors play off of each other so well. Such a powerful film as well, that I recommend you watch it and let it speak for itself.
