A trope that gets to me: 'guard dog' character and their partner who are both fully aware of it and honestly don't care/kind of like it. Someone says "call your guard dog off" and their partner does call them off. That person, their 'guard dog', is someone who is unreservedly, irrefutably loyal to them. Someone undoubtedly dangerous who is willing to kill, to maim, to obey, simply because of their love for one another. There's no manipulation involved— it is loyalty, brutal, dogged loyalty. And it goes both ways.
- Alaena and Maekar dynamic
Exactly. Alaena is a wafish girl who is more into the theoretical nature of the potential of Valyrian magic, and Maekar loves her enough to become limp at her feet because she's everything he wants and can internalize, there are many layers to this, but this is the dynamic.

I would like to request a scene between Maekar and his wife in the HotD! Verse
Alaena is would be an odd pick for a wife if she wasn’t Gael’s daughter.
Her head was half-lost in magic and the other half was focused on the secrets in King’s Landing. Maekar loved her anyway.
He was cold, tempestuous and sometimes thought his mother should’ve named him Maegor instead of Maekar but then Alaena snapped out of her daze and smiled so brightly and sweetly he thought he was made whole once more.
And maybe he was.
She didn’t flinch when he touched her with his scarred and scabbing hands. Instead she stroked the callouses and placed healing salve on the raw flesh. In turn he listened to her sing of Old Valyria, of the magic trapped away under the dirt of the doomed old rock and the songs of empires cast down long ago.
Alaena Bracken loved him, and for Maekar, that is enough to make up for the children that should run in their hallways.
(It was silent but it was not her fault it was his and his crimes although they were for the greater good it’s still on his hands.)
He can live with focusing on the Gold Cloaks, live with her and her songs, live with taking Larissa on flights to the Isle of Faces and see her face smooth out for the first time in a long time.
“Magic cannot heal what is dead.” Alaena says softly, one day. “But Laena says it can heal what does not live yet.”
Maekar thinks those are the most beautiful words out of her mouth he’s heard since the first time he found her singing in the God’s Eye.

HotD!Naerys Daella lives:
Was Alaena and Maekar a love match from the start or became love with time?
Love match from the start. Maekar's obsession with Alaena was instant, and Alaena fell in love with him too. He married her even despite her admitting she had fertility issues, which is big for someone as family oriented as Maekar, and Alaena loves being loved by Maekar and there's this sort of charm to them even though their relationship is odd.

good boy but in the way you praise a hunting dog after you have it gore something - the Alaena/Maekar dynamic, I think
you’re right and good girl in the way you thank your cat for bringing you a barely alive twitching little bird.

Daella lives and HotD:
Guy who doesn't understand that killing is murder: we can just kill him, right? That's legal
☝️ That's just Maekar
Maekar has been the law for so long he doesn't realize that there are more laws and Alaena is literally obsessed with Valyrian magic and barely avoiding falling into the Doom of Valyria.

Naerys: Blood magic is wrong unless it for Aemma or Rhaenyra.
Leonyra: Blood magic is bad unless you run it through me first.
Daemon, Laena & Alaena: Blood magic should be performed after proper research and liberally applied.

HotD:
*The Black kids are spending time at Driftmark with their paternal grandparents*
Aenys: Alys wrote that Lady Rhaenys had a dragon race with her and Jo, and Alys won!
Aenys: And that Lors Corlys has gifted a ship to Aemon, for him to sail whenever he wants once he is 16.
Aegon: That's nice, Otto had dinner with us last night and spent it poiting out the ways I am a disappointment.
Alayne: You think that’s bad? Aenys and I have a dinner with both the Brackens and Blackwoods celebrating our betrothal! There’s going to be so much bloodshed.
Alyssa, here to stir chaos and support Alayne: I mean I have lunch with Danielle and Roger tomorrow
Aemond: No one wants to hear about your DILF and his kid. Clearly Alayne and Aenys win with Aegon and I behind.
Helaena: Alaena and Maekar are making out in the shed. I think we can get them to suffer more than us if we tell Aunt Gael.
Everyone:……… Which shed?

Daella lives:
I imagine Otto always saying that Daella and Naerys doting of Leonyra will make her into a spoiled, uncapable woman and he won't let the same happen to the TargTowers.
And then Leonyra grows up to be, arguably, the most capable and talented of Viserys's kids, and the TargTowers are like "now that "stern grandparenting" spiel really was bullshit! We are not any more capable than out older sister and have way more baggage!"
Yup!!! Otto insists that Leonyra only turned out well because of the conflict she went through and then everyone is like: so you admit, there is conflict.
Maekar, basically the poster child for the Stepstones Targs since he’s the one in KL all the time while violent is stringent about doing his job right and has delicate, frail Alaena who he treats like a queen. Rhaegel is a septon, Aerion is doing what he’s supposed to be doing, Jon is literally dating his favorite granddaughter, Alyssa while having her moment with marrying Roger, is completely cool with Danielle and has a happy marriage. All of Naerys’s kids according to Westeros tradition and values have turned out completely okay and competent.
Meanwhile Aegon won’t listen to Otto, has really wacky views on the right of lords, Aemond also doesn’t listen to Otto and is pressured into marrying one Jeyne Bracken, Helaena literally is not down for any of this shit, Daeron is well, Daeron, and Viserra could also care less. He’s failed, Naerys and Daella have perfect success with Naerys’s children, Leonyra and Jeyne Arryn.

Maekar Targaryen, third son to the Lord and Lady of the Stepstones sat before Viserys with a determined expression on his face.
“I seek your leave to wed Lady Alaena Bracken.” he said firmly. “I have given my youth unto the City's Watch and now that I have found my one, I seek my king's leave to wed her.”
“And it's not greed? A want for a Valyrian bride or a lady with skill from Old Valyria.” Viserys pressed.
"I love her," he said reverently. "She's patient and good and kind and all the things I am not but wish to be, Uncle, allow me this and I am yours as I have always been."
"You are a good boy, Maekar. I will consider this, and know your answer will arrive very soon."
Daella lives:
Seeing Otto and Alicent squirm while dealing with the very powerful and influential Naerys ( Lady of the Steptones and rider of one of the big dragons) and Daella (born princess, Lady consort of the Vale and is raising the next ruler of the Vale) would be grand.
“Helaena’s enjoying Jeyne’s company.” Daella informs her traitorous nephew. “Perhaps a match upon the mountain would be best.”
Naerys smiles brightly and Alicent gives her a sharp look from her place at Viserys’s side. “I concur. Having a dragon at the Vale would be invaluable, and a valuable alliance to be formed. Rhea’s boy, Yorwick is around her age if I recall correctly.”
Viserys frowns thoughtfully. “Would Maekar or perhaps Jon not be better suited for her?”
Daella and Naerys’s smiles falter for a second and Otto smiles smugly but it vanishes once Naerys replies.
“Maekar has set his sights upon Gael’s daughter, goodbrother. And Jon has professed interest in traveling the world like Corlys, it’d be cruel to both him and Helaena to take him from the sea and her onto a boat.”
Alicent and Otto share a look. Their attempted courting of the Bracken-Targaryens had not been taking fruit as they hoped despite Alicent’s friendship with Gael.
The oldest, Aenys was chasing madly after Rhea Royce’s daughter, Alayne and the other boy was content to follow the Beesbury girl around. The girl was sure to be Maekar’s, the boy would not let anyone have at her until she denied him herself.
They had accounted for everything, except for love in this game of theirs.
