Since organizing and announcing the Tumblarian Party, we party-planners have learned that "Tiki" is not exactly cool. It's based in cultural appropriation and some folks have been quite rightly pissed off. We hear you. Introducing Shadow Puppet Edu!

Since our launch last fall, we've seen lots of Shadow Puppet use in schools, with tens of thousands of teachers and students actively using our app in the classroom. Today, we’re thrilled to announce a version of the app specifically designed for educators and students, Shadow Puppet Edu!

Shadow Puppet Edu takes all of the great functionality of our original app and adds top-requested features from teachers and students. A big thank you to the educators who gave us feedback and were generous with their time as we developed Shadow Puppet Edu. Just like our original app, Shadow Puppet Edu lets students combine photos, video clips, voice over, text, and drawing into short videos to share what they’ve learned, explain an idea, or present a project. These videos are easy to share with parents, students and colleagues, or add to a digital portfolio. What’s New in Edu? Free and Full Featured for Classroom Use All app functionality is unlocked in Shadow Puppet Edu and it is FREE for classroom use. Videos can include up to 100 pages and be up to 30 minutes long so you can create a video about a classroom art show with an image from every student or have a student read a picture book aloud with a photo of each page. HD video export and all of the drawing tools are also unlocked.

Search Library of Congress, NASA, Flickr Creative Commons You can now search the image catalogs of Library of Congress, NASA and Flickr Creative Commons for great content to include in videos, in addition to searching the web for images and animated gifs. We’re super excited to make the amazing images from these sources accessible to students and teachers like no other app has done before. Library of Congress is a fantastic resource for all US history projects, like a recap of the Civil Rights Movement. NASA is a great resource for science projects, like comparing the planets in the solar system or explaining how a black hole is created. Flickr has over 200 million images available under Creative Commons License that can be accessed through our app.

Easy Image Citation An image credit page is automatically added to the end of your video for any video using external links, making it easier for students to learn about properly citing their work.

20+ Common Core Aligned Activity Ideas Quickly find ideas to help you incorporate Shadow Puppet into your English, math, science, history, art, and foreign language classes -- and support Common Core State Standards. For example, if you’re doing a unit on the Civil War, you could have students use Library of Congress image search to recount the story of the conflict. Many of these great ideas came directly from teachers already using Shadow Puppet in their classrooms. They are a great jumping off point and can be easily customized to your curriculum and students’ learning level.

Administrative Controls for Sharing and Search Age-gating is in place to make sure videos aren't accidentally shared on social networks, and can be disabled in the device Settings app. You can also turn on/off web image search (Web images, animated gifs, Flickr Creative Commons) or education image search (Library of Congress, NASA) in the device Settings app. Best of all, Shadow Puppet Edu is free for classroom use.
