TIME MACHINE COUCH TOUR: THE GIANTS OF JAZZ (Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, Kai Winding, Thelonious Monk, Al McKibbon, and Art Blakey), ROTTERDAM, 31 OCTOBER 1971
Under the banner, literally, of the Newport Jazz Festival, this George Wein assembled band brought a bunch of beboppers together for enthusiastic crowds of Europeans. Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey were the charismatic leaders; Thelonious Monk was shy, not assertive, and under utilized but essential. I was intrigued by Sonny Stitt and impressed by how Al McKibbon didn’t step down. Kai Winding gets points for playing trombone, but he was simply solid.
So, Monk first. They did a blues of his in the first set (Blue Monk?) and Round Midnight in the second (the horns a little fussy) and maybe it was In Walked Bud too (at least an oh so familiar bebop tune). He took solos on these as well as the opener, a can’t name that tune standard. That one was opening because he was thoroughly himself but freshly so. He is of course a damn good pianist. Full stop. So this was a worthwhile reminder. But he wasn’t comfortable, one of the band, staring impassively as Dizzy was Dizzy in paying tribute.
Monk was one of the Giants, but so was Art Blakey and he was all over it just beaming at the festivities to which he added all sorts of zest. His extended solo during the closer Night in Tunisia was meant as a show stopper, but they did do an encore. He just cooked all night as did Al McKibbon.
What to think of Sonny Stitt? Well more than just Charlie Parker light. Indeed he had an airy tone and patient approach, solid not flashy. I asked myself if he was doing more than Kai Winding. I did use “solid” again, but I think he did. Being understated in the face of all that power takes a strength. He had a ballad that was quite nice.
Dizzy was the third Giant among this justly named illustrious crew. He is an imp, has fun, and plays like a motherfucker. His take on Stardust was stunning. But, let me whisper, I’m not sure that I like his trumpet playing as much as many others, the flutter and flurry of notes, the high register. I saw him 5-6 years later with solid unspectacular bands—Fender Rhodes, Fender bass, and Mickey Roker as a saving grace. Maybe I was already cool to his playing, but it felt like was coasting. Also he wasn’t Miles. But wonderful to see him here.
And what a wonderful chance to see all these players.
