I went to the maretarium! I love the big white sturgeon so much, that thing is my new parasocial fish best friend. I didn't see Hanna but I did successfully evade Aku Hirviniemi. Oh and I fed some carps! They were so lazy and disinterested but I did successfully feed one or two. (and I spotted this little sign)

yeah I'll reblog the memes for independence day but make no mistake, i unironically believe that finland is a shit country. especially as of late. not even getting to the rise of right-wing politics in the past few years, but just in general as someone who's not white and who's non-binary.

If you're anything else than a white able bodied allo cishet male, this country hates you. White male celebs who routinely sexually harass people constantly on TV, with no punishment in sight for their actions, their victims blamed by the public; one of the highest percentage of people to victim blame victims of sexual harasment.

Forever seen as an intruder if you're not white, whether you were born here or not - and even if you weren't, that doesn't make you an intruder. One of the most racist European countries. Romani and Sami people are treated like shit and it's completely socially acceptable to spout racist bullshit about both of those people. Rampant cultural appropriation, especially to Karelian people, who's culture I constantly see on tumblr too stolen by non-Karelian finns.

Trans healthcare literally one of the most inaccessible in western countries, constantly listed among worst in Europe. Being non-binary instantly lowers your chances to get care. So does being autistic. Years of waiting just to know if you'll be denied or not getting gender affirming care.

I wish I could say that I believe we can be better.

Blog #5 - The Unknown Soldier and The Known Author

A film made three times over the course of several decades is sure to draw the attention of anyone. The Unknown Soldier was first a book published in 1954 by author Väinö Linna. Interestingly, another of Linna's books was made into a Finnish movie much later on in 2009.

The Unknown Soldier has three versions. 1955, 1985, and 2017. This blog will be focused for the most part on the 1955 original film, so when the title is mentioned without a year, this is the one referenced.

Focusing on the Continuation War between Finland and the Soviet Union from 1941 to 1944, the film uses a mix of authentic film from the events depicted alongside the footage taken for the film. The editors did such a masterful job that it is at times nearly impossible to tell the difference.

The critical reception of the film was clear with the nomination for a BAFTA award in 1956, along with the six wins the film took home at the Jussi Awards. The film is still talked about today in film classes around the world.

Interestingly, when the film was shown in Russia for the first time it received a standing ovation from the audience. The film is shown in Finland every year on December 6th, Finland's Day of Independence.

When the film was remade in 2017, it brought modern film techniques into the fold in order to make the film even more visually stunning. The opening scene is a masterful display of transitional storytelling.

The ending scene perfectly parallels and brings the story full circle.

The difference between the films is striking and yet still familiar and recognizable to viewers of both versions, with colors used sparingly to help maintain the old and depressing atmosphere seen in the original black and white picture.

Fun fact: Maretarium Aquarium actually has a mascot of its own, her name is Hanna Hauki or Hanna Pike! She used to appear on informational flyers and there’s images of her scattered about in one room of the aquarium, you can even meet her in mascot form! I’ve met her personally myself, though sadly I don’t have pictures of that ^^’

When I was kid I often tried to redraw the images of her! Wonder if I can find those old drawings if I look hard enough…
