SSSS Character Smackdown Round 1d - All in the Family
Hey, looks like I forgot one from this bracket! Many apologies.
Part of the fun of the Prologue characters was seeing parts of their traits handed down to the crew.
Aksel Eide - described as a 'good grandson', worrying about the fate of his poor grandma, rushing headlong to assure her 'rescue'
OR
Signe Sørensen - tiny slip of a woman with a sharp tongue and quick wit, probably too quick, fired from her previous jobs before being hired on as a 'boat servant' and landing herself among the Madsen family on their Bornholm farm.

Jesus, Mary and Judas!
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR Folketeateret, Oslo, Saturday 12th October 2024 Written in 1970, this Andrew Lloyd Webber – Tim Rice rock opera could easily sound dated. In this new production, it doesn’t. The rock guitar-led score sounds fresh and irresistible. Musical director Bendik Eide leads a taut ensemble, breathing, strumming and beating new life into the familiar tunes and rhythms. It…

Inktober day 17! Back on track. One of my prompt lists had “If I killed someone for you” which I was 100% NOT going to do until @vefanyar suggested something with Aksel and Sigrun and killing trolls. Sigrun would...totally kill a troll for Aksel. Or they could kill a troll together! That would be romantic, right? :D

Stay for dinner, stay forever
Prompt: Any - The snows finally came in late December, just as the longest night approached.
The snows finally came in late December, just as the longest night approached. Dalsnes disappeared beneath a clean white blanket practically overnight. On the surface, it looked the way it always had, like a holiday postcard come to life. Snow could cover up a lot: charred buildings, bloodstains, fresh graves. But hiding them didn’t make them go away.
With those cheerful thoughts to occupy her, Sigrun finished out her shift at the perimeter wall and started for home. She hoped her fire was still lit. If not, she’d be in for a cold night. The houses had been built to keep the cold out, but they’d also been built to run on electricity.
A familiar figure was waiting at the inner wall. “Aksel?” She’d recognize that red hair anywhere, even in the gathering dusk. “I thought you were off duty tonight.”
“Sigrun!” His smile came through despite the scarf wrapped around the lower half of his face. “I am, I was looking for you. Grandma sent me.”
They fell into step, kicking up sprays of powder as they walked. “Berit asked for me? Is something wrong?” The cold bothered Berit’s joints, keeping her inside and away from guard duty. But she was still more than capable of overseeing the town’s defense.
“Oh! Uh, no, it’s nothing like that.” A blush crept above Aksel’s scarf. “She just…wanted me to invite you for dinner.”
Knowing Berit, the instruction had probably been something along the lines of “Ask that girl for dinner and also to bear your children”. Berit was an invaluable resource to the community, but subtle she was not.
Sigrun’s suspicions solidified when they reached the Eide house and Berit opened the door. “There you are! I was worried you’d decided to sneak off somewhere. Don’t just stand there Puppy, step aside so that poor girl can get in and get warm.”
It was a relief to be out of the wind. The roaring fire in the hearth did wonders for her mood, too. The Eides always kept a blaze going, partly for Berit’s joints and partly because their house had become a hub for meetings and planning sessions. It wasn’t uncommon to find half a dozen or so people gathered around the kitchen table, poring over scout reports and maps and supply lists.
Tonight it was just the three of them, though. Berit bustled around, alternately tending a pot of stew and fussing at the two of them.
“Coats on the hook—don’t worry about the snow, dear, it’ll mop right up. Are your boots keeping your feet dry? Aksel, be a dear and get her another pair of socks. Or a sweater—I find my outer layers always get damp in this weather, and we can’t have that, can we? Maybe you’d better go with him, Sigrun, you can show him what you need. This stew needs a few minutes, you’ll have plenty of time to warm up while you wait.”
It was all Sigrun could do to bite back her laughter until she and Aksel were in the relative privacy of his bedroom. One look at his face and she gave up on holding it in. “Oh my god. She’s so determined! How did you survive this long without getting tied up and forcibly married off?”
Aksel sank onto the bed and buried his face in his hands. “I am SO sorry. I don’t know why she does this! She never did before all the—well, you know.”
Sigrun sat down beside him. “I guess she’s hoping for great-grandchildren. But honestly, you’d think she’d be more observant. Practically shoving the two of us into your bedroom to ‘find a sweater’, and she didn’t even notice that I’m already wearing one of yours.”
“Oh, yeah. I wondered where that was.” Aksel unbent enough to look up at her and lay a hand on her sleeve. “I happen to like that sweater, you know. Don’t think this means you get to keep it.”
“What are you going to do, take it off me?” Sigrun poked a finger into his chest, then slowly trailed it upward until she reached his chin. “I would love to see you try.”
Aksel swallowed hard. “Sigrun. My grandmother is right on the other side of that wall!”
“And she’d probably be delighted if we got up to something.” Sigrun pulled her finger back though, and settled her hands on his shoulders instead. “One of these days we should just tell her.”
“If we do,” Aksel said, wrapping his arms around her, “She won’t stop until those great-grandchildren are a reality. Are you prepared for that?”
Sigrun wasn’t. She knew Aksel wasn’t either—there was too much work to do, too many ways things could go wrong. Either one of them could be the next in the ground, waiting beneath the snow for spring to come. So for now, other things had to wait.
“At least then she’d stop trying to set us up,” Sigrun said. “Although it kind of works to our advantage, doesn’t it?” She threaded her hands in his hair. “I get to be alone with you.”
Aksel smiled, and when Sigrun stretched up for a kiss, he met her halfway. Between one thing and another, it took them a long time to find Sigrun a new sweater. But if Berit noticed, she didn’t mention it. She simply served them stew and said that Sigrun was welcome to come for dinner anytime she liked.

Was this “blushing kiss” Gaaah, I can’t remember (I totally can, I’m just too lazy to go back and find out)
I remember I invented a backstory for this, but let’s just say Sigrun didn’t expect it... and she never blushed again kissing him, but he blushed every time ^^

A Norwegian rapper who cursed Jews while performing at an event in Oslo promoting multiculturalism will not be charged with hate speech because his words may have been criticism of Israel, prosecutors said.
Kaveh Kholardi said “f***|ing Jews” on stage at an event last year for which he was hired by the city.
Tor-Aksel Busch, Norway’s director of public prosecutions — a title equivalent to attorney general – rejected legal action last week, the news site Document.no reported Sunday.
Pro-Israel activists had filed a police complaint but it was dismissed. Busch rejected their appeal, explaining that whereas what Kholardi said “seems to be targeting Jews, it can however also be said to express dissatisfaction with the policies of the State of Israel.”
At the concert, the rapper wished Muslims a happy Eid al-Fitr holiday and acknowledged Christian listeners. He did not mention Israel.
On June 10, 2018, five days before the concert, Kholardi wrote on Twitter “f***ing Jews are so corrupt.”
The pro-Israel group MIFF, a Norwegian acronym for With Israel for Peace, which was involved in the initial complaint against Kholardi, called Busch’s decision “alarming” because he “finds ambiguity where there is none,” MIFF board member Jan Benjamin Rodner wrote.

Stand Still Stay Silent Liveblog #61
UPDATE 61: Defense Preparations
Last time it was agreed it was time to leave and return home. There’s not even a bit of time to rest because Lalli alerts them ghosts are nearby, so it’s now time to run away. Onwards!
But first! It’s a family tree. Look at that! It’s fun stuff. Let’s take a look bit by bit.
There’s Trond here, the son of the flatteringly-described Ingrid ‘Low Effort Hippie’ Pedersen. I remember how I laughed when I saw that as the very first introduction in this story. Quite a thing, that was. So yeah, Trond is old as heck. He’s only one generation after Year Zero. Compared to everyone else in this story, he’s an antique! I wonder if he grew up seeing the world collapse or if when he was born everything was ruined already.
Kitty came out of nowhere, as you can see. It formed from the dew of the forest and the blood of slain trolls, like right out of a Greek mythology tale. Hah! Okay, not really. Kitty’s mom was feral, wasn’t she? She sure didn’t react well when Sigrun came to help. That cat may have never seen any humans ever in her life.
These characters have middle names, goodness! So, Sigrun Eide the First is up there, having married Good Grandson Aksel. Three generations later, Sigrun Eide the second existed. I notice Sigrun’s second name is her mom’s. Something about the entire name Sigrun Solveig Eide sounds so nice, I like the sound of this a lot.
Hah! How nice of Michael and Signe, naming their son after their cat. Maybe I’m a bit of a sap, but I’m thinking it was because the cat sparked the first conversation they had. It’s kind of a sweet way to commemorate it. From there on, the tradition of giving M names to their children continued until present times. There’s Mikkel’s many siblings, just like he had said. No wonder he said he recognized Tuuri’s attempt to manipulate him, hah! Mikkel’s middle name is Henrik because no child of the Madsen family will be named by any letter other than M.
Before I started reading this webcomic I thought everyone in the Nordic countries followed the custom of last names being your father with ‘son’ added onto the end. Looks like that happens only in Iceland. Everywhere else they follow the tradition of adoption your spouse’s last name. Can’t say here where I live we do that, I have two last names. The thought of having only one last name is strange to me. Also, Ragnar over there looks intense, can you believe he’s the timid Árni’s son?
As Tuuri once said, Taru is family! Distantly related, but family. She’s the granddaughter of crazy pair Eino and Tuuli. In fact, she’s the daughter of the kid back then. Veeti’s grown-up face reminds me of Emil somehow. Must be the shape of the hair.
Kaino Hotakainen had no children nor spouse. I want to think she just wanted to live alone, instead of the possibility she...she died. Gotta stay positive.
There are the Hotakainens. Looks like at some point there were twins. From one came Lalli, from the other Onni and Tuuri. Also, I notice in Finland siblings tend to have some rather...similar names? Is that common? Look at that, there’s Eino, Kaino and Aino, and theeeen there’s Jukka and Juha, and then...well, Tuuri and Onni don’t seem to share similarities in their names. Worth noting Tuuri has Kaino’s name while Lalli has Saku’s. Guess Lalli inherited from Saku more than the propensity to getting sick on vehicles!
I wonder if the reason why Mia Vasterstrom didn’t take her husband’s last name is because some guy named Emil Svensson would be harder to tie to the characters introduced during the prologue chapter. To compensate, Emil was given that guy’s first name. Also, I have to wonder if Torbjorn once grabbed the cat and thought ‘ah, yes, mom said she once had pets. Misse and Bosse. I’ll name this cat Misse in honor of the cat—oh, wait, this is a male cat. Guess a dog’s name is good enough’.
Heh, overall I really like this page. Family tree with nice art! But it’s time for the story to continue, with a nice and shiny chapter opening page.
Chapter Thirteen, featuring Sleipnope the ghost horse, here depicted as a golden ghost. Significant in any manner because it’s colored gold instead of using the very pale blue normally used?
The crew is driving through the forest, looking for a better place to make their stand. They’ll want a place without trees to burn if Emil decides to use his incendiary skills, yeah? Sigrun stays calm and points at a field. That’ll be their battlefield. A good spot is obtained, inside Lalli and Reynir sit around to wait what they have to do, perhaps? Sigrun, Mikkel and Emil are ready to go ioutside, Mikkel is given a gun in what’s a risky move. Last time Mikkel was in a fight he almost broke Emil’s leg, so our dear Swedish better stay on the opposite side to avoid any unfortunate accidents.
Suddenly dog! Isn’t that Reynir’s dog?
It was a sudden transition to the dreamworld, where the dog searches for Onni and seems to be the way for Reynir to communicate with Onni even though one mage is awake and the other...possibly is awake too? Reynir omits the part where he asks if Onni remembers him and tells him they’re all in trouble and their defenses may not be enough. Onni’s help will be good if the ghosts reach them – which they most likely will. The dog fades away, possibly because Lalli just yanked him to drag him outside.
Looks like Emil and Sigrun are making a campfire over there. Sigrun must have a plan, hm! Not too far away, Lalli gives Reynir a stick and gestures on the ground. He wants him to draw.
Draw the rune. It burst on fire when the ghosts were nearby, with some ghosts it’ll happen again and incinerate trolls who try to attack. Well, if they’re lucky, that is. But still! It’s worth a try, and I don’t think the fire will spread, so it should be safe too.
Time is passing. It’s almost nighttime, they have done all they can to prepare. Did Reynir draw his rune on fire before Mikkel took him back inside the tank? I hope so. For now, it’s time for everyone to assume battle positions.
Okay, it’s drawn several times, I’m glad. If they had more time, maybe Reynir could have done that in a circle around the tank, for a wall of fire that can repel them from all possible points. No time for that, so...only in this area. I hope it’ll go well – geez, I’m kind of nervous!
Having finished the defensive plans they were able to make, everybody who is immune gathers on top of the tank, waiting for the darkness to come. It’ll be a few nervewracking hours. I bet even Tuuri and Reynir inside the tank will be afraid all the time, even though they’ll be safer than the rest.
They arrived.
Next time.

SSSS Character Smackdown - All in the Family
Sigríður Jónsdóttir - loves her family very much, has undergone 4 Dagrenning pregnancies (and a surprise 5th natural baby!) to build that family - she became just a trifle concerned when her youngest ran away from home
OR
Berit Eide - the grandma Aksel Eide sent Gunnar away to fetch, and it's a good thing too, because her experience proved invaluable to establishing Norway's troll hunters

Norwegian / old norse names and places
Every now and then I come across a book, movie, TV-series, fanfic, game or whatever, that mention a fictional "Norwegian" or "norse" place or person, and it just sounds so wrong it makes me either cringe or ROFL. Really. I still haven't recovered from the 1995 X-files episode, "Død Kalm", which took us to the port of "Tildeskan" where we met "Henry Trondheim", "Halverson" and "Olafsson". Hopefully this list will keep others from being that “creative” with names. :)
Common names for places, towns and villages in Norway
These names are very generic and suitable for a place, village or town anywhere (and pretty much any time) in Norway. Mix and match prefixes with suffixes for diversity. Bonus: All of these can also be used as surnames. Name (meaning) - usage
Nes (headland, cape, ness) - Standalone Bø (fenced-in field on a farm) - Standalone Fjell (mountain) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Fjell- / -fjell Haug (small hill / large mound) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Haug- / -haug Vik, Viken, Vika (inlet, the inlet, the inlet) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Vik- / -viken / -vika Ås, Åsen (hill, the hill (larger than "Bakken")) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Dal, Dalen (valley, the valley) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Berg (small mountain) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Berg(s)- / -berg Sand (sand) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Sand- / -sand Strand (beach) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Strand- / -strand Li (hill) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Li- / -li Gran (spruce) - Standalone or prefix: Gran- Bratt (steep) - prefix only: Bratt- Myr (bog, mire) - prefix only: Myr- Neset, Nesset (the headland, the cape, the ness) - Standalone or suffix: -neset / -nesset Odden (foreland, headland) - Standalone or suffix: -odden Våg (cove, bay) - Standalone or suffix: -våg Lund (grove) - Standalone or suffix: -lund Sund (sound, strait) - Standalone or suffix: -sund Skog (forest) prefix/suffix: Skog- / -skog Øy (island) prefix/suffix: Øy- / -øy øya (the island) - suffix only: -øya bakken (the hill) - suffix only: -bakken gard / gård / gården (farm / farm / the farm) - suffix only: -gard / -gård / -gården elv, -elva (river, the river) suffix only: -elv / -elva stad (old word for town/place) suffix only: -stad vannet (the lake) - suffix only: -vannet
Common words that can be used as prefix to any of the suffixes above Svart- (black) Lille- (little/small) Sol- (sun) Brei-/Bred- (wide) Stor- (big) Lang- (long)
Common Norwegian surnames (contemporary)
Heredatory surnames didn't become mandatory in Norway until 1923. Many took the name from the farm or place they lived, or just changed their primary patronyms into hereditary patronyms. Example: Helgessønn/Helgesdatter (son of Helge / daughter of Helge) became Helgesen.

Names usage Double names, like Ragnhild Johanne or Ole Martin are common in Norway. Just keep them as two names and don't use "-", and you'll be safe, even if it ends up a tongue twister. Using only one of two given names is also common practice.
In Norway everyone is on a first name basis. Students call teachers and other kids' parents by their first name, workers call their boss by their first name, we call our Prime Minister by her first name (journalists will use her title when speaking to her though). Some senior citizens still use surnames and titles when speaking of or to people their own age.
There are some exceptions. For example, a doctor may be referred to as Dr. Lastname when we speak of them, but first name is used when speaking to them. A priest is "the priest" when speaking of him/her and their first name is used when spaking to them. In the millitary only surnames (and ranks) are used. If you meet Harald, the King of Norway, in an official setting you will refer to him as "Kongen" (the king). If you run into him at the gas station, or while hiking, he is "Harald".
If you don't know someone's name it is okay to use their title, or just say "you".
Names for pets (contemporary)

Bynames Bynames, or nicknames, could be neutral, praising or condescending. Usually bynames described a person's
body, bodyparts, bodily features
age
kinship and descent
territorial origin
knowledge, belief, spirituality
clothing, armour
occupation, social position
nature
Examples: Eirik Blodøks (Eirik Blood-Axe), Gammel-Anna (old Anna), Halte-Ása (limping Ása). I suggest that you stick with English for bynames, or use (relatively) modern language if you are writing in Norwegian.
Surnames
Surnames weren't really a thing until 1923 when they became mandatory. Before 1923 patronyms (son/daughter of) were used, and the name of the farm you lived on was often added as an address.
For instance: Helgi Eiriksøn (Helgi, son of Eirik), who lived at the farm called Vollr (grass field), would be called Helgi Eiriksøn Vollr. If he moved to the farm called Haugr his name would change to Helgi Eiriksøn Haugr.
Patronyms
Men: Use father's first name and add -sen /-son /-sønn Women: Use father's first name and add -dotter / -dottir / -datter
Farm names
Farm names were usually relevant and derived from either the location, a nearby landmark, nature or from occupation. I suggest you stick with the modern forms for farm names.
Old Norse (meaning) - modern Bekkr (stream) - Bekk, Bekken Dalr (valley) - Dal, Dahl Horn (horn) - Horn Vollr (field) - Vold, Volden Lundr (grove) - Lund
The list of common names for places/villages/towns is still valid, although the spelling is modern. Just keep it simple and make "clever" combos based on meaning.

Recs and de-anons
What I received and wrote for Trick or Treat exchange this year (copied over from DW). Please go check out what people wrote for me; it’s all lovely. <3
My gifts ☆ [aRTD x SSSS] "Journaling the Apocalypse, or whatever" by Kiraly. Tuomi-centric, set during SSSS's year 0, journal format. 0+, 1.5k. Her voice for Tuomi is perfect. <3 ☆ [aRTD x SSSS] "A Haven for this Heart" by Elleth. Joona/Hannu, set during SSSS's year 0. 0+, 1.4k. I love the way she writes this pairing, and she included my love for radio communication, ahhhh <3 <3 ☆ [SSSS] "We Interrupt this Broadcast" by MadameFolie. Aksel, Berit, & Sigrun L; 0+, 215 words. Bite-sized canon-typical creepy radio happenings. ☆ [Small Trolls] "First Magic" by Lunarium. Jáhko & Veeti, 0+, ~400 words, delightful bite-sized cuteness with a hint of magic. <3 What I wrote ☆ [aRTD] "Let the Strings Sing" for TereziMakara. Tuomi & Little Hare. 0+, 1k. Tuomi searches for a song that he heard in his dreams, and tries to do something that should, by rights, be impossible. Ao3 | DW ☆ [aRTD] "The Song of Tuomi, the Hare, and the Fox" for TereziMakara. Tuomi, Little Hare, & Puppy-fox. 0+, 36 lines poetry. And then a fox came along and said, "Hey kid, I have an idea for you...." Ao3 | DW ☆ [SSSS] "Sailing Back". Ása Harðardóttir for Unlos. 0+, 100 words. Ása has had quite enough. A little rest will be good for her. Ao3 | DW ☆ [SSSS] "At dusk". Aksel Eide & Sigrun Larsen for IdleLeaves. 10+, 600 words. An encounter during the early days. Ao3 | DW ☆ [SSSS] "Full Circle" for ArgylePirateWD. Sigrun/Tuuri. 10+, 600 words, canon-divergent. They made it back safe and sound, and now.... Ao3 | DW
