Ok so I just realized that you wrote one of my favorite SasuSaku fanfics: Louder than Words. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've read that one😂. It's so damn good.
I love finding cross-fandom friends! It's the coolest thing. And I feel like shipping SasuSaku + being an Azula stan isn't common? I met my ATLA co-writer @mayimorr through SasuSaku fandom years ago, and she's the one who turned me into a huge Azula fan and Azukka (aka Sokkla) shipper.
Thank you so much for sending me this <3 I'm really happy to hear that my fic brought you joy!

@akiizayoi4869 and I were talking and I wanted to share this idea
Azula is born 13 years ahead of her (now little) brother but even so, Zuko, being the first son, is in line for the throne ahead of Azula. When the war ends and Ozai is thrown in prison, all eyes turn to the next in line for the throne, the one who is officially Fire Lord of the Fire Nation: one year old Zuko.
Azula is trying so hard not to have mental breakdown in the background.
#Aang: Where is the new Fire Lord? We need to meet him so that we can make sure he won't turn out like the last one.#Azula: Here you go#Zuko: Ello!#Aang:....10/10. Gold Star. Nuance! That actually sums up this whole post in a single word lol — they really have disposed with all nuance post-canon. Tragic, honestly.
Everyone gets a retcon!
Everyone gets a Good Guy/Bad Guy Bucket!
I swear if they make Sokka a vegetarian in the Adult Gaang Movie…
Flameo Hottake
After browsing some insightful analyses (A, B, C) on Ashes of the Academy, I’m starting to wonder if the ATLA writers — from Bryke to Hicks — are incapable of executing a transformative character arc (i.e. turning a Good Guy into a Bad Guy or a Bad Guy into a Good Guy with minimal reliance on off-screen explanations).
Sure, Zuko got a “redemption” when he switched sides at the end of the series…but in terms of behavior/traits, he acts the same way in Book 3 as he does in Book 1 — just fighting as a Good Guy. He’s still short-tempered, rude, and resorts to violence as a matter of impulse. If you watch Sozin’s Comet and then restart the series with The Boy in the Iceberg, you won’t say, “Wow! Zuko sure came a long way! He’s completely unrecognizable!” Because other than the ponytail, he’s very much recognizable. Same guy, really.
Anyway, back to Ashes of the Academy. Ursa’s dialogue at the start of the comic frames the (ostensible) conflict: the Academy changed Azula for the worse, and it could very well do the same to Kiyi. Except…we aren’t shown any of that. There is no flashback corruption arc for young Azula, and Kiyi doesn’t start to slide in that direction either. Apparently, Azula is a Bad Guy — always has been. And Kiyi is a Good Guy — always will be. It’s like they’ve been…flattened.
That’s a problem which other franchises might be able to tolerate better, but given Avatar’s thematic emphasis on the ability of anyone to change, the writers seem awfully determined to cram every major character into either a Good Guy Bucket or a Bad Guy Bucket then ignore established canon and previous characterization to justify why they always belonged in that bucket.
The handling of Mai’s past, especially her friendship with Azula, may be the best example of this. In ATLA Book 2, Mai is an antagonistic villain. She’s not nice. She does not have noble motives. She is clearly a Bad Guy, albeit a cool one. So writing her in AotA as if she was truly a Good Guy all along, just pretending to be friends with Azula to please her father — an explanation which makes no sense in broader narrative context or given that Azula is an insightful ‘people person’ who would’ve sniffed that out sooner or later — is utterly incoherent. (Oh, and Mai was never into the Fire Nation imperialism thing either, making her about one in a million lmao.) She belongs in the Good Guy Bucket now…so she was always a Good Guy? She never aligned herself with the Bad Guys because she, too, was once a Bad Guy? That seems to be how they’re operating.
The same is true for Azula, just inversed. How did the Academy make her worse? ‘Worse’ implies that she was better before she attended, so are we shown that moral regression anywhere in the comic? Or was she always an irrationally cruel psychopath, a la The Bad Seed? At this point, we’ve seen too much of her humanity and vulnerability for them to sell us on that — even as recently as the Spirit Temple comic — but AotA pushes her in The Bad Seed direction again, contradicting itself (Ursa’s dialogue) and, more egregiously, Azula’s characterization in the original series. I’m starting to hear Oprah’s voice in my head: “You get a retcon! And you get a retcon! And you get a retcon!”
Who’s next? Well…I think we can guess…
As the ATLA story creeps and bounds (first in the comics, soon with the Adult Gaang Movie) towards the LOK timeline, they’re going to have to confront a bigger problem: How did Zuko, the teenage usurper of his father/sister’s widely popular regime, manage to completely reorient the ideologically imperialistic Fire Nation? That’s kind of a big deal. It’s the major overall conflict throughout many of the comics, and he’s (understandably) not seeming to make much progress. But just from a writing perspective, if they can’t show a couple of small children being twisted by a bad school system, how could they possibly pull off the moral redemption of an entire nation?
All this to say…
…prepare yourself for the whole Fire Nation to get retconned into the Good Guy Bucket. They were always good people! They didn’t want imperialism! They weren’t warlike! It was all Ozai and Sozin! Azulon? Who’s Azulon?
Seriously, though, it’s coming — unless they manage to get some competent writers who know how to effectively move a character from A to B.

do you have a top 5 best one shots of zucest? i wish your bookmarks were public 😭
"Familiar" is probably my favorite zucest one-shot ever. Bigger age gap, Zuko being a mess because Azula is hot, Azula being clingy, it's just a good time (even if my girl Mai gets done dirty).
https://archiveofourown.org/works/37240012
"Take My Hand, Wreck My Plans" I REALLY love this one, it just gets me in the feels. It's cute, sexy and oddly wholesome? 10/10 (I also recomment the stories "Sins of the Past" and "Bikini Bottoms" by the same writer) @matchamarshmallow
https://archiveofourown.org/works/39369852
"Late Night Visit" It's Zuzu teaching Azula to masturbate. Need I say more? @that-guilty-pleasure
https://archiveofourown.org/works/57247576
"Catch" Conflicted Zuzu trying to be protective of Azula while she's in a situation that he could easily exploit (and that she wishes he would exploit). One of my favorite tropes ever.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/37048801
"Celo" it's one of my absolute favorites despite being an alpha/omega fic, which is something I don't particularly care about. It's just really well written and I can't resist a dominating Zuko being all over a defenseless Azula
https://archiveofourown.org/works/40009686
BONUS: "The Protective Older Brother" It's technically not zucest... but it totally fucking is, sorry not sorry @akiizayoi4869, I don't make the rules (except I do)

Thank you for tagging me @dont-leafmealone ❤️ The original post was getting kinda long so I’ll link it X
last song: Outta Time by Natalia Kills (the theme song for my current wip The Type of Girl to Disappear. all of my roommates are surely ready to murder me if they hear it one more time lol)
favorite color: purple
last book: I’ve been reading She’s Too Pretty to Burn by Wendy Heard for 8 Million years okay. I love this book so far, I’m hooked. I’m horrified & intrigued by the way over the top violent activism paired with a charismatic hot guy & unstable teen lesbian (maybe?) girls can go excitingly wrong. But Libby keeps returning it SO fast & then I have to wait. It’s terrible. Before that I read No Place Left to Hide Megan Lally which is a really good twisty turnt thriller mystery with mixed timelines & some unforgettable characters.
last movie: Heretic (ayyy twins!)
last show: Yellowjackets
sweet/spicy/savory: Spicy 🌶️
relationship: single pringle ^-^ (twins again!)
last google search: “alligator noises examples” I had to listen to different alligator noises in order to properly use them in the setting of the type of girl to disappear 😉
I tag @cisneconcorbata @theowritesfiction @peony-pearl @sooz-again @hello-nichya-here @akiizayoi4869 @prodogg @leyleys-cannibal-cafe @gerbfukc @queenofthefaces @lunaintheskyforever @oedipal-callie @thedailydescent @acecampbellsaunders @marzipanandminutiae @soft-puppy-boyfriend

There is an Azula stan / group of Azula stans going around accusing zutara artists / writers of AI (and ALL of them have been zutara creators) so in light of that, here's a list of definitely AI blogs who have invaded my inbox with scraped posts containing anti-zuko/zutara, pro-azula arguments. They've also been sending things to @the-badger-mole that I'm aware of.
Although this could be unrelated, I just think it's interesting that although the person who started the recent drama claims to be about artist integrity, they are specifically going after zutara shippers and they and all the people supporting them are Azula blogs who seem to have beef with a specific zutara shipper after an argument broke out between the two sides over shipping, and the things they say are very similar to the arguments I've been getting bombarded with for the past three or so months.
Here are the blogs from my block list, I forgot there were so many of them!
@bitchygardenerkryptonite
@saltysoulkidcreator
@sshdhdhdhdh
@clevercrusadebread
@wingedyouthcrusade
@unlikelybarbariancycle
@thoughfulbarbarianlove

@zuzustyles
@atomiczombieanchor
@foulpersondefender
@alwaysgenerouscupcake
@qualitymentalityperson
@delightfulturtlesandwich
@saintnoviceprince
@juniorscientist52
The fact that these blogs are largely empty and have word salad usernames is a dead give away that there is no real person behind them, plus the fact that there are so many. I've gotten multiple messages a day in my inbox, sometimes from multiple blogs and sometimes the same message. They are always posts taken from Azula stan blogs, mostly @zuko-always-lies or @akiizayoi4869.

Idk, but I think that if you want to make bizarre and invasive demands that artists provide you "proof" that they actually created their work, while also claiming that this isn't about shipping, you should look at the bot in the mirror.

"Azula overturned Zuko's banishment, not because he really cares about him, it's just in case Aang survived her lightningblast and she'd sadistically frame Zuko as a scapegoat and save her own ass from Ozai's wrath!"
So, a lightningblast is not an instant-kill move? If it still is, then this plan can only work if Azula had supernatural clairvoyance, precognition, ESP, and/or is a Jedi. Which I recall none of these things being revealed.
Zuko completely spilled the beans about Azula making the blast and that Aang survived. Two episodes later, at the boiling rock, oh look! Azula is perfectly fine!
Ah yes. The blackmail. People just loooove to frame Azula's whole "giving Zuko the credit for killing the Avatar" maneuver as some master plan that Tzeentch would be proud of in order to bring her brother to ruin. Thing is, she had no way of knowing that Aang would have any chance of survival.
Something that she herself brought up before:
See? She genuinely believed the Avatar was dead and that Zuko had nothing to worry about. The whole myth about bringing Zuko back just to use him for blackmail doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Even with the common misconception that Azula is power-hungry, why bring back and restore somebody's status when she could've just used the Dai Li back in the Earth Kingdom?
Bringing Zuko back honestly did more damage to her chances for the throne in the long run if that's what she was after...and to her as well.
Did Azula blackmail Zuko? Yes. But you also have to remember that she figured out that Zuko was withholding information from her. Here's a post by my dear friend @akiizayoi4869 which goes into detail, but the short gist of it was that both siblings are equally guilty of hurting each other with this mess. And trying to pin the blame squarely on Azula is an attempt to make Zuko look better than he actually was.
But to the second point. It is true that we didn't see what Ozai did when Zuko threw her under the bus (a rather dick move of him I might add since he didn't really gain anything from it). Thing is, I don't think Ozai would've hurt Azula if he still had some use for her. He'd probably scare the hell out of her and give her an ultimatum of killing Zuko or killing the Avatar to get back into his good graces. Since she failed in both, that could factor in his decision to abandon her during Sozin's Comet since she wasn't needed anymore.
Honestly, that potential scene is a huge missed opportunity. One, it actually gives Ozai more development and elaborates on the relationship between him and Azula. Two, it helps paint Azula in a more sympathetic light and clears up some of the ambiguity around her actions. And three, establish that between the two, Ozai is the more heinous one if he threatens to do the same thing to Azula that he did to Zuko. It certainly would give this line a bit more weight:
Thing is...Book 3 had a LOT of writing problems and shortchanging characters when it came to development. We didn't really get any time with anyone from the Royal Family not named Zuko outside of "The Beach" to humanize them too much. Some of the story decisions such as Azula's breakdown do feel a bit rushed. And we also missed out on storylines which could've developed her a bit more, like the arranged marriage subplot. So while her getting a scene like I mentioned would make a lot of sense in terms of character development, I'm not really surprised given what we've seen from Book 3.
