Flag of the ancient Kingdom of Akean
(originally posted on DeviantArt last 3rd February, 2020)
In the ongoing scenario that I’m currently involved (Mutia nan Katimuran, currently on temporary hiatus), the kingdom of Akean was already established in the northwestern part of the island of Panay; in the same scenario, the Akeanon territory was a little bit larger than its OTL counterpart as it included the northernmost tip of OTL Antique, which in the current scenario was more concentrated in the southern part of the island, and the westernmost part of the OTL province of Capiz; indeed, the capital of the pre-colonial kingdom was Bakan (OTL: Banga, Aklan), near the center of the Akeanon domain. For the flag itself, since the principal colors of the Akeanon people, both in the pre-colonial and (ATL) contemporary era, are yellow and black, the design was more simple to reflect the use of the flags in pre-colonial Philippine archipelago, mostly in triangle and/or square. At the center was the variant of the Dharma-Chakra (Wheel of the Dharma), a religious symbol of foreign origin that was eventually indigenized, particularly in Akean itself. Created and edited on MS Paint and Photoscape.

Ananias Morales Atienza, composer
The maestro, my great-grandfather, was born circa 1870s in Taal, Batangas. He studied from the Milan Conservatory of Music in Italy, could play every single instrument of the orchestra and was a prolific composer writing songs for just about anything.
He led the Filipino band of soldiers of the Spanish Army that played during Jose Rizal’s execution on December 30, 1896 in what was then Bagumbayan. Rizal’s death, and more so being part of the spectacle, upset him so much that he decided to flee Manila. The opportunity came about when he learned that his good friend Pio Martelino Legaspi was about to board a ship home to somewhere in the Visayas.
Upon their arrival in Aklan, Capiz, it was love at first sight for him when he met Pio’s youngest sister Lutgarda. With his status and power plus Pio’s approval, the marriage was quickly arranged. And that’s how he came to settle in Aklan. They eventually had 6 children: Angeles, Jose, Jovita, Paz, Luz and my lola Merli.
In Aklan, he formed the first infantile orchestra, an old photo of which used to be displayed at the ‘Museo it Akean’. While some of his compositions have become well-known e.g. “Lumabaylabay”, “Kaming Magmamani” and “Duro Ro Atong Kalipay”, he himself did not become famous, as they have generally been just passed off as traditional folk songs. “Kaming Magmamani” especially has gained so much popularity after an arrangement by National Artist Lucio San Pedro was released. It had since been arranged by more composers and sung by various prestigious choirs worldwide.
He had many other compositions but most were lost when their house was burned down during WWII. My lola used to tell about this with tears in her eyes. The few surviving fragments of his music were based on the transcriptions of his students particularly his own children.
His quiet but greatest legacy is the Funebre for Orchestra that he wrote in a span of two decades for the Spanish-era Santo Entierro that was brought to Kalibo by his father-in-law, the Agustinian priest Pedro Legaspi. This 5-part orchestral work is in reality also a love song for his wife Lutgarda. The music tracks how he pursued her throughout their colorful love story which started out as some kind of arranged marriage that she wasn’t pleased with at first. The Santo Entierro was so important to Lutgarda that when matters related to inheritance were being discussed, she expressed she didn’t care how much share she gets as long as the family’s Santo Entierro stays with her. It is for this reason that the Santo Entierro has his own “camalig” right at the portion of land she inherited along 19 Martyrs Street in Kalibo.
As I was learning this piece as a child, older members of the family would tell of the background story behind the rich melody in the last section of Funebre 1, the fights they were having when he was writing Funebre 2, his joy when he finally won her heart over in Funebre 3, how the violins get to have their beautiful solos in Funebre 4, and the deep sadness mid-section in Funebre 5 upon finding out that he was terminally ill.
He died of pneumonia circa 1918 when he was just in his 40s, after getting drenched in the rain when he went to the Kalibo town plaza with his only son. My Lola Merli at the time was just a baby. He willed that this work be played exclusively for the family’s own Santo Entierro, his family and his students. The special religious tradition for his family, students and other musicians to gather every year during the Good Friday procession to play his music in devotion to the Santo Entierro still exists to this day in the town of Kalibo.

Political Parties on Deus Gemmas
Deus Gemmas operates with a form of democratic institution. While independent candidates can run for office, the vast majority of candidates are seen in power as part of a wider political Party. Due to the Gemman system requiring multiple prime representatives (Ministers or Lord Ministers depending on election) multiple parties are seen in power at one time. This has seen a dampening on more radical politics, implementing more moderate and negotiable positions
Below is a list of some of the most notable political parties seen across the planet.
The Aftkean Royalists
A unique blend of politics and religion, the Royalists are a collection of socially and economically conservative beliefs united with a reverence towards the Everchosen and a declared ‘Divine Right to Rule’. Public opinion varies based on those questioned but the party has and continues to be a major political force even when not directly seen in power. Some Districts have had the Royalists be such an omnipresent force that they have never not seen the party in office in whole or part.
The Aftkean Royalists came from the Akean Noble Family during the Imperial age. While a minor family, they were responsible for delaying reactions to Kallig’s uprising through the exposing of various scandals between the larger families. Functionally they are now a dead bloodline but their legacy has lived on in the adoption of Hive Nobilis as the capital and the Royalist Party.
---
The Traditional Socialist League of Profugus
The Traditional Socialists League is a party based almost wholly within Hive Profugus, with smaller offshoots present across the other Hives. The word ‘Socialist’ has drastically changed meaning within the human lexicon. The League ascribes its economic positions in line with the governments of the M29 socialists of the Anarkus Quadrant and M35th Houl’vanin People’s Republic, but still preserve more traditionalist social values.
Due to the need of multi-party coalitions within governments, the longer term and majorly changing policies desired by the party are often put aside in favour of more realistic, short term legislation which has ensured a popular opinion of the party, even with groups which otherwise oppose them.
---
The Free People’s Coalition
Originally formed as an effort to rival the ingrained political parties, such as the Aftkean Royalists, the Free People’s Coalition is a party which is a union of smaller parties which seek to provide a unified front in elections. As they are a union of opportunity rather than clear ideological bonds, the parties often break apart and reform for new elections.
There have been seventeen notable formations of the FPC. They primarily lean towards centre right politics, leading to the formations of the ‘Party of Liberal Unity’ and the ‘Party of Shared Democrats’ for more left wing party coalitions.
---
Other Political Groups
As with all other political systems, there are those who have more radical agendas and seek to bring these about outside of the mainstream. The Unbound Empire is no exception and works to keep most form flourishing into a major force. The two most dominant of these groups on Deus Gemmas are the;
The Jackal’s Order
An anarchistic collection of Jackal worshippers, the Order’s primary goal is to return the universe back to the primordial chaos from which life was at its most base level.
Despite their lofty intensives, most of the activists are more akin to minarchists than true anarchists and are of limited threat. This part of the group only get judging looks from the general public. The more notious part of the group are a collection of terrorist cells who utilise improvised explosives for their apparent nature and symbology to the explosions which spawn solar systems.
Their largest presence is on Deus Gemmas, but have reached out to other worlds. A limited ‘live and let live’ agreement has been formed privately with the Abbanic Children provided internal policing limits their outward damage.
---
The Children of the Emperor
A radical Imperial group, the Children are primarily from ex-Imperial families who had returned to the beliefs held by the Imperium of Man. They are an overtly violent organisation who use the creed of the Imperial Cult and Cult of Sacrifice as justifications for their actions.
They seek to destabilise the Unbound Empire from within, via major civil unrest, which would provide the opening needed for Imperial Reclamation.
A common conspiracy theory is that the Children of the Emperor are a partially puppetted organisation. Causes vary from wishing to manipulate population statistics, ideological control, and create instability within desired centres. They all stem from the apparent lack of mobilised crack down on the organisation.

Kalibo, Aklan: A Walk in the Town
It was 6:30 in the evening, strapped in my seat, and looking at the window as the sky slowly turns pink, when the airplane plunged through clouds on approach to Kalibo International Airport. Once the plane was on the ground, we stepped down and appreciate the cotton candy sky for a little while. Seeing the sky, it never fails to send amazement to me.
The moment we're complete, we hopped on a van towards our accommodation at Beebee Lodge, munched over dinner at Lorraine's Tapsi, a small eatery near our place which was featured already in Biyahe ni Drew, and killed time at our lodge.
Awaken with the loud voices of my highschool friends the next day, we began to prepare for our Kalibo tour that day and had our jolly breakfast at Jollibee. We headed towards Kalibo Cathedral, where the image of Sto. Niño of the world-famous Ati-Atihan Festival is enshrined, for our first stop. The church was a survivor of world war II and earthquake.
Just a walking distance from the church, our feet brought us to Museo It Akean, a repository of the province's history and heritage through art exhibits and memorabilia that highlights different eras from the past up to the present. For only fifteen pesos, one can revel the glorious past and culture of Aklan. The memorabilia of Geofredo P. Ramos, the Father of Aklan, are prominently showcased in which you can see his pictures and the things he used before. Also, a collection of its antiques and age-old crafts and artifacts can be found in the two-storey edifice.
After a good hour of roaming around and appreciating the beauty of Aklan with its preserved history, we walked towards Kalibo Pastrana Park which is also a feet away from the museum. We rested our feet, took a break for a while, and decided to go to our last stop before having our lunch.
Almost 15 minutes later, we were heading to Bakhawan Eco Park, a 220-hectare mangrove forest and serves as one of Kalibo’s prime attractions. Once registering and paying 150 pesos each and the staff at the entrance done explaining the history of the mangrove forest, we enjoyed our nature stroll trough 1 kilometer bamboo trail appreciating the different species of mangroves.
We came to a stop and the path surprised us with a scenic view of the beach at the end. We had our in-between photo ops (of course, for instagram haha!) making us finished the whole stroll for almost 2 hours which was supposed to be just a 15-minute walk. I didn't expect to see a beach at the end but it made the whole walk worth it. It's very calming and peaceful and very far from the busy streets in Manila. There's also a so-called open bar with bamboo tables and chairs where one can rest and enjoy the view. For 300 pesos, you can opt to have a tamilok or woodworm tasting which was now a very famous thing to do in Aklan. Sadly, we didn't divulge ourselves to try.
When we recovered from the long walk and finished indulging the fresh air from the sea and enjoyed the peacefulness in the arms of Mother Nature, we decided to go back to our lodge and packed our things in time for our check out. After which, we make our tummy satisied with our lunch at Manukan Haus Kamayan and headed to Kalibo International Airport for our transfer to Boracay.

PA-KABIT at PA-SABIT ni ABET”, 2019 / Nakakain ba ang art? By Joey Cobcobo, artist friends, students, neighbor and community groups / Photo courtesy of the artist / Photo by Rog Castillo II

Apotropaic x SKYLAB / Community workshop and installation, 2019, Water District, Roxas City Photo courtesy of Green Papaya archives

Kabit at Sabit
As the public health crisis severely restricted people's capacity of mobility, daily life began to be entrenched in home as well as in the Internet space more than ever. In face of such conditions, Load na Dito has been receiving an increase number of inquiries about an one day exhibition "Kabit at Sabit" that we organized in May 2019. We would like to reflect on this project on this occasion given by Arts Tropical.
Title and Concept
The Filipino word kabit means to attach and to connect, and sabit means to hang, which can be used to describe both the state (naka-kabit, naka-sabit) and the act (i-kabit and i-sabit), and also implicate the unfixed and temporal conditions. These two terms also give us an opportunity to not only think about the material conditions, but also about our own precarious situations. Our life is made precarious not just because our bodies are mortal, but because we are dependent on the work of others since the moment of birth. We survive by connecting ourselves to the social networks, which simultaneously mean that we may fall into a dangerous situation if the connection is not properly established.
With these discursive ideas in mind, we came up with the plan of the exhibition "Kabit at Sabit." We wanted to imagine a form of exhibition that would tweak the algorism of socio-cultural conventions and capitalist logics by temporally inserting artistic practices and expressions into an existing landscape, which would create strangeness to the normal relationship of people, things and information. We also wanted to explore the potential of an exhibition as connectivity of the individual's will to participate, which may bring to light a horizontally expanding network.
Method of planning
Thus, we disseminated the following idea by using SNS: "install an artwork on the exterior of one's own house, studio or open space attached to it for one day on May 11, 2019, and simultaneously post photographs or live stream the video of the work on social media sites." Without curatorial interventions of individual plans, the exhibition was made completely open to anyone who had an interest in the prompt, willingness to participate, independently produce and present artwork.
A total number of 32 artistsacross the archipelago responded to the call by kabit (temporarily attaching and connecting) and sabit (hanging) artworks in various media and forms in their immediate environment. Some of them shared with us their plans and information on the physical locations in advance, while we chanced upon other contributions through encountering their works online with the hashtag #kabitatsabit. Some works were made fresh to be presented at Kabit at Sabit, while others were existing works that were temporarily taken out from their studios. However, most of the works were commonly made up of material sourced from everyday life, including their own bodies and stories passed down in the community.
Space
The artworks were exhibited in 32 different locations across the Philippine Islands. Although details of each location were shared on the Google Map, the expanse of physical space made it impossible to physically visit all of them within the duration of the exhibition being one day, hence the main audience was naturally targeted at the neighbors who had familiarity with the landscape. While some works conveyed an inherit sense of hospitality, others critically questioned the invisible boundaries and the violence that exist in the intimate sphere of life, including home. In parallel with the interaction happening in the actual space, the photos and videos of the works were uploaded to the social networking sites, creating moments of continuous feeds, nothingness, and discrete appearances, and this facilitated random encounters for people with '#kabitatsabit." In fact some people spontaneously responded to the call, which they happened to see on the day of the exhibition, and participated in an impromptu way. The framework of the exhibition was not fixed but emerged as an ever-changing kinetic entity.
The possibility of unstable condition
The constant shifts between online and offline spaces are about to become our daily routine. While eyes of surveillance are ubiquitously lurking in the online space, it also opens up the possibility of spontaneous connections among individual wills and actions for common cause beyond physical distance. The organic movement of connecting, separating, and then connecting constantly produces a network of diverse patterns.
An unfixed state may risk falling or collapsing, but by daring to create an unstable state, we may be able to destabilize the values and definitions that have been fixed in place. Rather than striving for protecting one's own territory by categorizing, excluding and eliminating, we believe in order for us all to survive together, we need to create a circuit in which a diversity of forces, including contradicting forces, can perform equally important function.
In less than a year since "Kabit at Sabit" was held, the government of the Philippines accelerated the abusive use of state power under the pretext of response to the public health crisis. The forceful lockdown of people's life in home has abruptly cut off the physical and psychological links that sustained the lives of people. Life started to feel uprooted and neglected; people lost ways to make a living and started to suffer from anxiety and hunger. In response to such critical situations, artists and cultural workers quickly forged a network of cooperation by intricately combining the virtual and physical spaces in order to deliver support to those who are in need of it. By reimagining the process of making an exhibition as part of the web of connectivity, an exhibition may be able to function as an organism, which maintain "lifelines" which are forcefully torn apart by authoritarian egoism.

Malabo
Inalala ko pa yung panahong ipinarinig mo sakin yung paborito mong kanta, Moment of Truth, Thinking Out Loud at Crush ni David Archuletta. Yung tagpuan nating dalawa. Pero tulad nga ng sabi nila, ‘Promises are meant to be broken.’ Basic. Kaso ang sakit, ang sakit sakit. Wala akong magagawa. Tatamarin kang gumising. Gusto mo lagi ng pagkain. Antukin. Iyakin. Pikonin. Napakabitter. Sobrang labo nun. Hanggang dito nalang
