#AKAHistoryIsBlackHistory Wanda Yvette Sykes Writer, Actress & Comedian  Initiated into the #GammaTheta Chapter of #AlphaKappaAlpha at #HamptonUniversity.  Bachelor's Degree in Marketing from #Hampton in 1986. Mom, Marion Louise, worked as a #Banker, & her Dad, #ColonelHarryEllsworthSykes, was employed at the #Pentagon. Her family history was researched for an episode of the 2012 PBS genealogy program #FindingYourRoots With #DrHenryLouisGatesJr.  Her ancestry was traced back to a 1683 court case involving her ancestor, Elizabeth Banks, a free white woman and indentured servant, who gave birth to a biracial child, Mary Banks, fathered by a slave, who inherited her mother's free status. According to historian #IraBerlin, a specialist in the history of #Slavery, the Sykes family history is "the only such case that I know of in which it is possible to trace a black family rooted in freedom from the late 17th century to the present." Known for her ability to make us laugh, Soror Sykes shocked the nation when she announced her battle with #BreastCancer on the #EllenDeGeneresShow in 2011. After being diagnosed with breast cancer, Soror Sykes made a huge decision to get a #DoubleMascectomy. “I just wanted the best odds,”   “I made my decision because I love life.” Soror Sykes is a well-known face for breast cancer. Soror Sykes is one of many ladies of #AlphaKappaAlphaSororityInc who have had and BEAT breast cancer.  Soror Wanda has been nominated for fourteen #PrimetimeEmmys, with one win (in 1999) for "Outstanding Writing for a Variety or Music or Program."  2001, she won the American Comedy Award for "Funniest Female Stand-Up Comic."  She won a Comedy Central Commie Award for "Funniest TV Actress" in 2003. 2010 she won the #GLAAD Stephen F. Kolzak Award. 2015 she won the Activism in the Arts honor at the Triumph Awards. Helen Louise (Wheeler) Riddle was a founding member of the #SigmaChapter of the #AlphaKappaAlpha at #UniversityOfSouthernCalifornia (1922), & FIRST Black Woman to graduate from #USCLawSchool (1927). She married #JohnThomasRiddle, a USC graduate and #USCFootball player. Group photograph of about 125 members of the #AlphaKappaAlphaSororityInc in the courtyard behind Kerckhoff Hall at #UCLA. Helen Louise Riddle is standing in the next to last row within the center arch, centered between the ladies who are 3rd and 4th from the right in the last row under the center arch representing the #SigmaChapterAKAs. A flower-covered sign reads: "#Boule1932." Naida McCullough was a school teacher in Los Angeles, and a charter member of the University of Southern California Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She served as president for the USC branch. In 1925 she also was a temporary #FarWesternRegionalDirector and she established the #AlphaGamma Chapter at #UCLA. She was a well-known concert pianist and art patron. Corine Stovall was a member of the Stovall family of Los Angeles, and was active with events for the Stovall Foundation. She was active in clubs and events aimed at community uplift, often called the African American clubwomen’s movement.. The PR Committee of Alpha Alpha Omega presents: 💕 #AAOIvyofDistinction 💚 Mrs. Nan Moone Currington Soror Nan was Initiated in Alpha Alpha Omega Chapter in 1946. Soror Currington is the OLDEST living member of her chapter. She has severed in numerous positions since joining the sorority. She became a #DiamondSoror this year for her 75YearsOfServiceToAlphaKappaAlphaSororityIncorporated. Soror Nan graduated from #CheyneyStateCollege in 1942 with a bachelor’s degree in home economics. She later attended #PennStateUniversity where she earned a master’s degree in counseling supervision and subsequently her administration certification from #BucknellUniversity. In 1950 she began her career with #PittsburghPublicSchools, where she worked as a teacher, advisor, counselor, vice principal and dean of students. She retired from Pittsburgh Board of Education in 1981. She is a faithful member of the #MountHopePresbyterianChurch where she served on various committees, until she could not. Her favorite involvement with her church and serving was singing in the choir. When she’s not at home or church you can find her at her favorite entertainment place, Rivers Casino. Her attributes to longevity were dipping her mother’s cornbread into the liquid that came from greens, because she didn’t like to eat them.
