Hello ABL. First of all, let me just say, that I love your devotion to Seven Days. It was my very first bl and what got me to discover the genre. Of course it was all downhill from there lol. Just kidding. Maybe... Anyway. I've been doing this thing since the beginning of the year where I watch older jbls (usually before 2020, although that is not old by any stretch) to kinda get a broader view of the genre in Japan. I haven't been in this for that long so I'm still catching up. Some of the stuff I've watched so far. All the Pornographer series/films ; Dangerous Drugs of Sex; Takimu-kun 1 & 2; Junjou (2010); Athlete (2019) Udagawachou de Matteteyo (2015); Ai no Kotodama (2008) No Touching At All (2014) ; The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese (2020). I've also watched things like His (series and film), Restart coming back home, Life Love on the Line, and I'm probably missing a couple but not a lot. So I was wondering if you had more recs for me. Anything you can think would fit with what I'm trying to do.

It's like the fact that they were on opposing politicial sides split the embryo and created two children of different ways of life. And I can't believe the mom pushed the dad out of parliament. The tea was piping hot and he just breezed over it. I wonder if the mom disappeared the son to save face, cause only the dad is helping.

Zouey and Nont talking First down from a menty b was the sweetest scene, but why didn't they go with him to find Soong?

Was I the only one who thought Aob was having a heart attack when he was having sex with Puen? Lol You rarely see a simultaneous climax in this show. I was so confused.

Sooooooo now Nuth has integrity and is being positioned as at least being better than people who record sex without consent aka Captain? Sigh I guess.

Do we believe Nuth? Like anything he says, especially when being cornered?

"Was there more than one custom dog mask made?" is a great question. But now that we know Prom was the one wearing it, I'm trying to remember why it matters.

Let me think a bit about this scene between Jump and Porche to distract myself from the fever 😩

So! I guess a lot of us have wondered why Jump was so interested in Porche's dad during the car scene. After all, what does it matter to him who Porche's father is? But of course, Jump has already shown that he can be quite attentive. He is someone who likes to acquire information about the people around him, because you never know when it'll come in handy!

So now we have Jump who notices a piece of paper in the car's trunk. It tells him that the car is registered under the name Jason Lee.

He then learns from Porche that Jason Lee is Prom's and Porche's dad. But wait... Lee? Jump gets very interested all of a sudden, because neither Porche nor Prom use that family name. Their name is Ponglred!

Jump immediately moves away from Porche and continues to ask "Are you mixed?" (aka dad is Chinese while the mom is Thai) and most importantly:

Now I don't know about you guys, but Jump actually looks really concerned to me here. It's like he wants Jason Lee to be Porche's stepfather and not the biological one...

My guess right now is that Porche and Prom are the sons of Mr. Lee's mistress. That would explain why they have their mother's last name (divorce hasn't been mentioned so far). It could also be the reason why the two of them are allowed to sort of waste their potential. Mr. Lee sounds like a very rich and powerful CEO, yet Prom doesn't get pressured into being a big shot at the company (Porche is the only one who told him to quit that job at Playboyy, but only once and Prom dismissed him. Cause really, why should Prom bother? He still gets to live in that villa with the giant pool!). There doesn't seem to be too much pressure on Porche either, if he's able to spend his days fucking the car wash boy (and before that Porche was hardly ever present at the car repair shop). Yeah, sounds to me like the spoiled kids of a rich guy's side chick.

And that might very well mean that Mr. Lee has more than just those two kids (the old cougar probably jumps onto everything that moves...)! Maybe some other mistresses' son didn't get as lucky as Porche and Prom. Maybe his mom got cast aside and ended up living in poverty, meaning her son had to pick up sex work to survive 👀

Playboyy likes to drop hints pretty openly and in-your-face (like Nant's necklace for example), so I'm very certain that Mr. Jason Lee will play a bigger role in future episodes. Who is he exactly? Just a random CEO? The owner of the Playboyy lounge? Or maybe even a sort of king pin who is pulling the strings from behind the curtains? Also: Does he have a third son?!

One thing is obvious. We should keep the name "Jason Lee" in mind!

GENERAL NOTES: because kana characters are generally sounds that combine what we’d think of in english as consonants and vowels, they’re split up into groups based on that, and this song plays with that (there’s probably actual terms and a more concise way to say that but i’m no linguist lol). aside from where it coincides pretty well with the english vowels of AEIOU, i tried to keep the alliteration of the original lyrics, so this translation is a little more liberal and vibes-y!

If y’all know me, you’ll know that I absolutely abhor omegaverse (you can thank Kurui Naku Ban Beta, Sayonara Alpha, and Erito for that). Literally everything you could do in an abo has already been done. I don’t see a point in making more of these. Mangakas: Okay, let’s do domsub instead But hey, am I not a Okitsu whore? No. Anyway, even though I was excited about listening to this, I knew I was going to hate Kotani because he was an asshole. 

There’s only one thing worse than an abo.

JK. Unmei no Tsugai doesn’t sell itself as a serious plot, so it shouldn’t be taken seriously either. Unlike our deep try-hards. I mean, it’s your pretty run-of-the-mill dumbass gets an excuse to fuck the asshole, falls in love with him, the asshole becomes more of an asshole, the dumbass drags a third party to make him jealous, the asshole becomes more of an asshole, poor third party gets led on and dumped, and the dumbass and asshole finally gets together without the asshole even apologizing, medetashi, medetashi. But the way that Haruta wrote and movic set it all up was fantastic. 

Now this is how you do comedy. I initially had some doubts ‘cause the narration in the first track was kind of strange lmao. It went from medieval style to traditional Japanese and it was narrated by someone who sounded like a news broadcaster wth. Is this a densetsu??? The CD later turned out to be a whole vocal flex for Massuu and Okitsu ‘cause goddamn. 

Massuu, for starters, used a tone slightly above his Hirokuni but slightly smoother. I haven’t read the manga before, so I wasn’t sure how things were going to go, so I was very surprised that he pulled his shounen (aka his Kirishima) voice later! I loved it. His changes were dynamic, chaotic, and very fitting for Shishikura. AND! AND! JESUS CHRIST HIS SEXAY MONOLOGUES!!! HELLO??? WAS HE PAID EXTRA??? Y’ALL GOTTA HEAR ALL THE BEDROOM SUBJUGATIONS!!! I didn’t know he had that in him tbh. I was just blown away. He has never bottomed this chaotically before, if I recall correctly. It’s evident that he had a lot of fun recording this (as did Okitsu as per the cast talk) and I love that! It makes me wish this had a second volume so we could hear more of this kind of Massuu.

Onto Okitsu,

Y’all already know what I’m gonna say. 

Is my bias over Okitsu making me like this? Who knows? But it’s undeniable that my man has, once again, slayed this role. I won’t talk about his perfect performance much ‘cause I’ve already run out of praises years ago, so just know that if you’re not an Okitsu bitch by now, you’re really missing out lmao.

In conclusion, get this. Get this if you’re a fan of the series and abo in general. And if you dislike abo like me, this still is worth getting if you’re an Okitsu/Massuu stan. If you want to see just what makes voice actors good, you’ll be in the right place. As for those who want to read the manga along with the BLCD, it is doable, but bear in mind that there is added and cut dialogue. I only have the magazine releases, and I’ve noticed that the narrations are rearranged, so do try buying the tank if you can (reading the Chrima release with it is doable too tho). Gosh, I really wish this wasn’t an abo lmao. Anyway, I’m afraid there aren’t a lot of gag abos like this out there, so I wouldn’t be able to recommend anything similar. Go Kashikomarimashita: Destiny and Re:birth for more Okitsu tho

I watched Japan’s film His on viki rakuten, and it was SO GOOD.

Very beautiful slice of life cinematography that Japan does so well.

The story is so touching and i was instantly invested in the very real situation the characters found themselves in.

Something I really liked was that you never really got a strong sense of who was “top” and who was “bottom” and it was quite refreshing.

Have you sent it? Do you like it? I cried sad and happy tears watching this one.

His the Movie?

Not only have I seen it but Miyazawa Hio is one of my favorite Japanese Actors.

The reason it doesn't come up much in this blog, is I don't really conciser it BL, more just high brow queer cinema. (Also I'm not wild about the ending.) But it certainly is quality.

There's a prequel series of the same characters meeting as children, entirely different cast tho. Also called His (the series) or His - Koisuru Tsumori Nante Nakatta (AKA His: I Didn't Intend to Fall in Love, His: I Didn't Mean to Fall in Love, His: I Didn't Think I Would Fall in Love).

Eh, you know Japan and their titles.

I like it, but it's chewy... work to get through in that quintessentially Japanese way. I think currently airing My Strawberry Film will be similar.

The same actor who plays young Nagisa in this series, Kura Yuki, is in the BL Kimi no Koto Dake Mite Itai.

These are all Japanese arthouse style, which (while I appreciate) is not my personal preferred JBL lane.

Of all these, I like the movie .you're asking about best since I think this filming style tends to suit adult characters better than young adult.

Meet Hibino Nagisa (played by KURA YUKI) a lonely 17 year old boy living alone away from his parents. He loves to surf. And he likes men and feels ostracized for it. However no one in the seaside knows about his sexuality. A family with a daughter has more or less adopted him in that they feed him. He is unaware their daughter has a crush on him.

Meet Igawa Shun (played by KUSAKAWA NAOYA) who arrives in the seaside town to visit his father. Soon after he arrives his father has to rush off several days for work. While sightseeing Shun spies a boy and girl arguing. It's Nagisa. The two boys develop a fascination with one another. Nagisa is immediately smitten with Shun and befriends him. Even getting him a part time gig at the same place he works.

Nagisa searches for answers of Shun's feelings by telling him a legend story about man falling for a boy. Eventually in this 5 episode series the two boys admit their feelings for one another hurting the two girls who happen to have feelings for them. Yet still the girls support them. (The End)

A movie version takes the story into adulthood with FUJIWARA KISETSU (as Hibino Nagisa) who has broken Shun's heart. Breaking up with him to become a professional surfer. That of course doesn't work out but he stays and tries to become a proper man. Getting a woman pregnant and marrying her. But his facade is revealed (by him) and he returns to find Shun with a 6 year old daughter in tow.

Shun (now played by MIYAZAWA HIO) has isolated himself in a small town. He sees a young girl standing alone blowing bubbles. He asks who she's with. She calls out papa and Shun turns to see his former lover.

Shun takes in Nagisa and his daughter and the two men slowly rediscover their love. As Nagisa is in the process of a divorce. His wife comes and takes their daughter away. Later Sora (the daughter) is picked up by police after she wanders off from her mother who is drunk and passed out. The police notify Nagisa who picks up his daughter.

Later a custody battle ensues with the defense using Nagisa's homosexuality as a basis for him to lose custody of his daughter.

As his lawyer tries to discredit his ex-wife Nagisa stops the proceedings in favor of a settlement (he gives up custody) which crushes him. He melts in a puddle of tears as Shun holds him.
