PHI ABL.
I watched Japan’s film His on viki rakuten, and it was SO GOOD.
Very beautiful slice of life cinematography that Japan does so well.
The story is so touching and i was instantly invested in the very real situation the characters found themselves in.
Something I really liked was that you never really got a strong sense of who was “top” and who was “bottom” and it was quite refreshing.
Have you sent it? Do you like it? I cried sad and happy tears watching this one.
His the Movie?
Not only have I seen it but Miyazawa Hio is one of my favorite Japanese Actors.
Tumblr media
The reason it doesn't come up much in this blog, is I don't really conciser it BL, more just high brow queer cinema. (Also I'm not wild about the ending.) But it certainly is quality.
You know it's a kinda sequel?
There's a prequel series of the same characters meeting as children, entirely different cast tho. Also called His (the series) or His - Koisuru Tsumori Nante Nakatta (AKA His: I Didn't Intend to Fall in Love, His: I Didn't Mean to Fall in Love, His: I Didn't Think I Would Fall in Love).
Eh, you know Japan and their titles.
Tumblr media
I like it, but it's chewy... work to get through in that quintessentially Japanese way. I think currently airing My Strawberry Film will be similar.
The same actor who plays young Nagisa in this series, Kura Yuki, is in the BL Kimi no Koto Dake Mite Itai.
Tumblr media
These are all Japanese arthouse style, which (while I appreciate) is not my personal preferred JBL lane.
Of all these, I like the movie .you're asking about best since I think this filming style tends to suit adult characters better than young adult.
Have you seen Life: Love on the Line?
It's in a similar vein. You might enjoy it too. The Director's Cut on Viki is excellent.

I find height difference rather ho-hum when it's played up, or used as part of typical seme/uke sexual dimorphism. But incidental height differences? Where the characters and the script mostly ignore it? For some reason that drives me kinda wild. I was not expecting to discover this about myself.
The only two examples thus far are Kondo Shori and Yutaro as Ichijo and Mahiro in Zenra Meshi (Naked Dining), and Miyazaki Hio and Fujiwara Kisetsu as Shun and Nagisa in His (the 2020 movie). But, like, 🥰, [incoherent squealing],☺️.

I can’t stop thinking about Suzuki Ryohei’s acting in this last clip in the newest trailer for the Egoist movie.
I can just tell that I’ll need a lot of tissues for this one 😩

Hey P, I saw in one of your recent anon replies you said you'd love to see other countries takes on UWMA - and oh mY GODS! YES! I wish.
I was wondering if you have an ideal cast, country to country? Who would your picks be for the different productions?
(Side eyes Sam Lin as Dean for the Taiwan cast - also thought of Yagi Yusei as Team for Japan?!)
I was also wondering if there are elements of the story, dynamics, or characters you think different countries would do well, or what they'd bring to the table in terms of production and execution?
I genuinely can't wait to hear your thoughts if you have any!
Hope you're well and having a good May so far!
Oooo

Recasting Until We Meet Again
in different countries, 6 leads only, BL actors only, no existing pairs
(Generally I chose actors who are a bit too old for college, but this series could be set in a work place or sports environment etc… and the story would still work, so shrug.)
Tumblr media
Taiwan
Dean - Sam Lin (We Best Love)
Pharm - Erek Lin (DNA Says Love You)
Korn - Alex Chou (My Tooth Your Love)
Inn - Shi Cheng Xuan (Plus & Minus)
Win - Hank Wang (Be Loved In House)
Team - Hsu Shuo Ting (About Youth)
You cannot tell me you aren't absolutely gagging for that last pairing. I think I'm brilliant.
Tumblr media
Korea
If I didn't like busting up pairs I'd hand the Parks (Semantic Error) Dean & Pharm, and the 8th Sense boys their past selves. But since I'm feeling experimental...
Dean - Park Young Woon (The Director Who Buys Me Dinner)
Pharm - Choi Jae Hyun (Peach of Time)
Korn - Leo (Happy Ending Romance)
Inn - Gongchan (Unintentional Love Story)
Win - Kim Seong Hyuk (Choco Milk Shake)
Team - Jeon Chang Ha (First Love Again)
Alternate reality option: Hand it to OnlyOneOf and have them make a series of interpretive MVs about the darn thing.
Tumblr media
Japan
Dean - Miyazawa Hio (His the movie)
Pharm - Kura Yuki (His the series)
Korn - Suzuki Jin (Given)
Inn - Oriyama Nao (Takara & Amagi)
Win - Komiya Rio (Eien no Kinou AKA Eternal Yesterday)
Team - Ohira Shuzo (8.2 Byo no Hosoku AKA 8.2 Second Rule)
Although we all know Japan would have Dean & Pharm AND Win & Team also end up apart/dead.
Righto, those are my picks!
Fun ask!

I guess Elemental, but that was more it was on and I was in the room. The last movie I watched on purpose was His.
Tumblr media
It's a Japanese BL movie that came out in 2020. It's technically a sequel...as there is a 5 episode prequel from 2019. The movie is entirely self-contained, you don't need to watch the series first. (I didn't even know about the series until after.)
General story is that these two dudes dated in HS/Uni (the series is about them meeting). After one graduates they go their separate ways and one (red coat) eventually marries a woman and has a daughter. When he begins divorce proceedings he comes back to the town to stay with beige jacket...kinda because he's his only friend. As they deal with the growing pains of being back in each others lives their romance is rekindled.
It's a very cute movie and definitely worth watching. I'm pretty sure it's on Gaga. If you do decide to watch the series you should know that the lead couple is recast. I still haven't watched the series, so I can't say if they do a good job or not, but the acting in the movie is really well done. It deals with a lot more 'adult' themes than we see in BL, like divorce and dealing with children and all of that. If you've seen Papa & Daddy and liked that, I think it's a similar vibe to that show.
(Also TW for child neglect, alcoholism. You can message me if you need specifics. It's not overwhelming, but it's there and it's heartbreaking)
wait guys. reblog this and tell me what the last movie you watched was. bonus points if you add a short review <333

Una delicata storia d'amore, che tocca argomenti profondi, tra cui l'accettazione sociale di chi ama in maniera "diversa".
