Owlphibia Vs Disney Television Animation Next Era - When I Learned That Serialization Can Be Bad In Excess....
Tumblr media
The night i posted this, i didn’t bothered with it beacuse i was ready to hop on an airport to Acapulco for the weekend, returning on Tuesday evening, i was surprised by the many QRTs, Replys and Reblogs as the tweet went viral over-night to the point of cringy Tik Toks and YT Shorts where putting made up bs.
Since the announcement that Disney Branded Television will stop the serialized era at Disney Channel for the 2020s and from now on will focus on musical episodic comedies specially many of them created by Big City Greens with exception of Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur who was confirmed to be serialized later on, there has been some bias againts the current and future Disney TVA lineup for Disney Channel from the Owlphibia fandom (Owl House and Amphibia) this has been prominent since Q3 2021.
These past years i haven’t been bothered by that beacuse right now im 24 years old and im more focused on finding my first animation job after finishing college by next year and starting to save money for equipment of my art, to bother if people i don’t know cry if their favorite storytelling on the medium of animation for a multimedia company will go away
Tumblr media
However recently the Owlphibia community has been on a very toxic situation with future Disney TVA shows by simply existing that finally decided to speak up, specially with some things that have been bothering me with the community that i have been carrying since 2021 to a point where someone attemped to “cancel me” and decided to finally writte this over the following bs that happen during the Annies weekend where OPs pic scares away potential fans of both TOH and DTVA shows
1) TREATING BIG CITY GREENS LIKE THE SECOND COMING OF SATAN
Tumblr media
Big City Greens is a curious case where a fandom hate goes so much, beacuse im tired of going to the BCG tag on Twitter and evey 5 or 3 tweets i see a Owlphibia fan hating the show beacuse the bitter truth “JEALOUSY” recently these people treat this show as a soulless project that only exists just to cancel serialized shows to give it more attention, BCG dosn’t have any fault of that, Dana has explained that the show was axed due Gary Marsh leadership at DBTV on 2020 or on 2021 where TC was delayed and the Owlphibia fandom was pissed that a BCG marathon was replaced instead.
Tumblr media
Im tired of repeating myself with this point but the show is very popular with it’s target demographic aka children who support the show legally as opposed to Twitter & Tumbrl who searches the latest MEGA as soon at is posted AND barely supports it’s official release on legal platforms,Bob Chapek’s LGTBQ+ scandal was a fair boycott and i respect it if that case made you NOT want to support any official release of TOH & Amphibia to give Disney money, if that was the case i completly understand.
However Big City Greens, the show and it’s crew dosn’t have the fault of being the cancelation of TOH or delaying True Colors as that’s illogical and dosn’t make any sense and if you have following me you know that im glad that their Alumnis like Natasha Kline,Cheyenne Curtis,Monica Ray,Amy Hudkins and Raj Brueggemann as well The Houghton Brothers mentor C.H Greenblatt will do their own Disney shows and being succesful with their own franchises as Disney has faith in them to make big hits and becoming next storytellers and honestly that’s fine, im sure you will love them and speaking of future Disney TVA shows...
2) APATHY TO ANY OTHER NEW DISNEY TVA SHOWS ON THE WAY.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This where real tweets when these shows where announced and got me a laugh out of me, the first one beacuse on the same day Disney literally announced two serialized series for Disney+ under the Disney Europe Animation (The Doomies & Dragion Striker) while ignoring The Witchverse and Rhona Who Lives By The River and the second one was beacuse we literally confirmed that InterCats will be a more mature comedy for kids and teenagers ala Regular Show which explains it’s Disney+ greenlight.
Or recent attacks to The Witchverse for being a show about witches and being the major blamed for Owlphibia for TOH cancelation or Owlphibia fans crying when Phineas And Ferb announced a revival, being angry at Hamster and Gretel making a dark blood joke or throwing a tantrum over Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur aka a Marvel IP getting merchandise right off the bat and bothering Disney TVA excs on Twitter to ask them to break NDA to know if there’s a new serialized show on development.
I understand being afraid however things change as well and it’s very obvious that the era of Gravity Falls alumni-leading projects at Disney is over as S.H Cotugno and Emmy Circiega and others have left Disney for good now that TOH is over or that their development deal is now over however this dosn’t excuse to  look with apathy to this new era as this new shows might even surprise you and is interesting that other animation communities of other countries are open to this new era than American cartoontwt and cartoontumbrl recently one Facebook page from Latin America posted the first photo and the community commented on this with positive reactions with the new episodic era, here are some of the highlights
1 - In my opinion, it's good that they let this type of series rest with deep serious plots and deep character developments. The truth is, I was already fed up with those fandoms that fought with everyone and among themselves, defending tooth and nail every idea or theory that It arose throughout the series and that when it ends, the fans want answers about what happened next or they want a continuation of it, and they don't understand that if it's over, it's over, period.
2 - Well, I think it was time to put this kind of series to rest, over time they began to fall into the Adventure Time and Gravity Falls formula, it worked well, but perhaps that genre of storytelling in the medium needs a reinvention.
3 -  I feel sad that they are stopping these type of animated series with that format. Rebecca Rose said it months ago that this is the new approach because it is easier for the target demographic to get into the series and get hooked on a random episode that happens, but it doesn't mean anything bad ,there is Molly Mcgee and other projects that don’t look bad
4-  Serialized shows are good, but once in a while, you need a break, something simple, to watch over a meal and for that, the return of Phineas & Ferb is appreciated
5- I'm not saying that the GF-type "formula" should disappear, but that Disney itself stagnated with it...  Pretty much like the anime, the tropes started to be repetitive a lot like "a normal person arrives in a magical world and blah blah blah..." I think they can be more creative than that
6-  Im fine with it, at the end of the day Disney knows how to reinvent itself, this will not be the end of the company or Disney's animation units.
7-  People prefer to watch shows without following a plot so much, it's normal that they want to put that aside for a while.
As for me im pretty excited that finally Harvey Beaks/Big City Greens alumnis are getting their time to shine besides More Than Us from Disney Wish, Encanto’s song What Else Can I Do? is what represents what i feel with this new era:
youtube
Before finishing an aclaration with this editorial im not forcing you to like every new Disney TVA series for Disney Channel, im just asking nicely to the Owlphibia community to level down their hatred with other Disney shows for simply existing and direct your anger to older dumb excecutives instead of other shows who don’t have any fault of a cancelation.
Tumblr media
And be positive that at least that someone still greenlights original animated series in this sea of cancelations based on the betrayal of Netflix Animation and the mess that is WBD, Cartoon Network Studios WISHES right now to have someone as passionate on animation as Ayo Davis and Meredith Robers.
Tumblr media
Finally im my opinion overall on this is pretty much “Change can be difficult, but it's how we grow. It can be the hardest thing to realize you can't hold on to something forever. Sometimes, you have to let it go” and with this new era of episodic musical comedies by BCG alumnis well “But, of the things you let go, you'd be surprised what makes its way back to you.” -- Anne Boonchuy.
Take care and support animation - Seb

For his entire tenure as an Avenger, Anthony Mackie had never been the first name on the call sheet.
In a galaxy of stars populated by Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson, the actor was aware of his place in the on-set pecking order, but would never miss an opportunity to make his presence felt.
“Number six on the call sheet has arrived!” Mackie would routinely shout on films like “Captain America: Civil War” and the box office-busting “Infinity Saga” sequels, according to Marvel chief creative officer Kevin Feige.
It exemplifies the sort of winning tone that the 42-year-old actor has brought to his superhero character the Falcon, aka Sam Wilson, for six movies from the top-earning studio — wry and collegial humor, with the potential to turn explosive at any moment. Both Mackie and his character are set to burn brighter than ever when the Disney Plus series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” lands on March 18.
On that call sheet, “Anthony is No. 1,” Feige is happy to report, “but it still says ‘No. 6.’ He kept it because he didn’t want it to go to his head.” The series is essentially a two-hander with his friend and longtime co-star Sebastian Stan, the titular soldier. All six episodes were produced and directed by Emmy winner Kari Skogland (“The Handmaid’s Tale,” “The Loudest Voice”). The series, for which combined Super Bowl TV spot and trailer viewership earned a record-breaking 125 million views this year, is reported to have cost $150 million in total.
For Mackie, though, the show comes at a critical time for both his career and for representation in the MCU. Sam Wilson is graduating from handy wingman (Falcon literally gets his job done with the use of mechanical wings), having been handed the Captain America shield by Evans in the last “Avengers” film. While it’s unclear if he will formally don the superhero’s star-spangled uniform moving forward (as the character did in a 2015 comic series), global fandoms and the overall industry are still reeling from the loss of Chadwick Boseman, who portrayed Marvel’s Black Panther to culture-defining effect. With this new story, Mackie will become the most visible African American hero in the franchise. And when asked whether he’ll be taking the mantle of one of its most iconic characters, he doesn’t exactly say no.
“I was really surprised and affected by the idea of possibly getting the shield and becoming Captain America. I’ve been in this business a long time, and I did it the way they said you’re supposed to do it. I didn’t go to L.A. and say, ‘Make me famous.’ I went to theater school, did Off Broadway, did indie movies and worked my way through the ranks. It took a long time for this shit to manifest itself the way it has, and I’m extremely happy about that,” Mackie says.
Feige says that, especially with the advent of Disney Plus and the freedom afforded long-form storytelling, the moment was right to give the Falcon his due.
“Suddenly, what had been a classic passing of the torch from one hero to another at the end of ‘Endgame’ became an opening up of our potential to tell an entire story about that. What does it really mean for somebody to step into those shoes, and not just somebody but a Black man in the present day?” says Feige.
Tumblr media
Like many comic book heroes, Mackie has an origin story marked by tragedy at a young age — specifically around the loss of a parental figure. The New Orleans native is the youngest of six children from a tight-knit middle-class family, whose trajectory was spun into chaos when his mother was stricken with a terminal illness.
“It was unexpected and very untimely. I was 15 when she was diagnosed with cancer, and a few months later, she was gone. She passed the day before my ninth-grade graduation,” Mackie recalls. “If my mom wouldn’t have passed away when I was so young, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
Mackie had already gravitated toward the performing arts before the loss of his mother, having enrolled at the pre-professional school New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. Like many young people grappling with trauma, Mackie says he began to act out. A core group of teachers helped get him out of trouble. Ray Vrazel, still an instructor at the school, personally drove the student to a Houston-based audition for the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where he was accepted for his senior year of high school.
“Everything I did, I did for my mama. The idea of leaving home at 17 to go away to school would have never been an option if she was still around. She was my best friend. Losing her gave me a kind of strength, and a desire to succeed,” Mackie says.
Succeed he did. Spending that formative year as a minor on a college campus helped Mackie find his “tribe,” a misfit crew of artists and performers, which propelled him to acceptance at New York’s prestigious Juilliard School in 1997. There he was part of the breakthrough class of students of color to be chosen for the notoriously selective drama program, which Mackie says was liberating given the institution’s track record.
“Our year was a huge transition. There were hardly any Asian people in the drama program, maybe one or two Black people and hardly any Black women. In our class, we had three black women, two black men, one Native American, one Asian female, out of 20 people. Ever since then, the classes have been wildly diverse,” says Mackie, whose fellow students included stage and film star Tracie Thoms and actor Lee Pace.
Tumblr media
Following his training, Mackie launched a staggeringly versatile career. He has played Tupac Shakur and Martin Luther King Jr. to similar acclaim, a juicehead bodybuilder in “Pain & Gain” and a homeless gay teen in the Sundance player “Brother to Brother.” He has exhibited remarkable staying power in an industry that often pigeonholes actors and has a pockmarked soul when it comes to inclusion.
“I was drawn to Anthony because of his electrifying ability to combine intensity with sensitivity, courage with compassion, and all of it comes across as inevitable, as if it could be no other way,” says Kathryn Bigelow, who directed him in the 2009 best picture Oscar winner “The Hurt Locker.”
Samuel L. Jackson, whom Mackie calls a mentor and has played alongside in several films, says he has “an innate quality that first and foremost makes everyone want to cast him.” On a recent idle Netflix search, Jackson came across Mackie’s latest sci-fi film, “Outside the Wire,” and it triggered a memory of sitting in the audience for his performance in the 2010 Broadway production of Martin McDonagh’s play “A Behanding in Spokane.”
“Watching him onstage, I thought, he’s a very adroit actor capable of putting on many hats. He’s fearless and will try to be anybody. Then, on my TV, he’s playing a nanobyte soldier or some shit,” Jackson says.
Though always humble about getting the next job, pre-Marvel Mackie was rarely offered pole position.
“There were certain pegs. My first was ‘8 Mile.’ It was a monumental step at the beginning of my career,” Mackie says of the 2002 Curtis Hanson film that elevated rapper Eminem to multi-hyphenate stardom.
“After that it was ‘Half Nelson.’ It blew up Ryan Gosling, so I was there to ride the wave. Then ‘The Hurt Locker,’ and it blew up Jeremy Renner. It was the joke for a long time — if you’re a white dude and you want to get nominated for an Oscar, play opposite me. I bring the business for white dudes,” says Mackie.
He remembers the sensation “Hurt Locker” caused during its awards season. It was a moment he thought would change everything as he stood on the stage of the Dolby Theatre with the cast and filmmakers, having just sipped from George Clooney’s flask while Halle Berry radiated a few rows away.
“I thought I would be able to move forward in my career and not have to jostle and position myself for work. To get into rooms with certain people. I thought my work would speak for itself. I didn’t feel a huge shift,” he says, “but I 100% think that ‘The Hurt Locker’ is the reason I got ‘Captain America.’”
He’s referring to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” the 2014 Marvel film that was the first to be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo (the current title holders for the highest-grossing film of all time with “Avenges: Endgame”). Mackie says that blockbuster not only gave him his largest platform to date but changed expectations of superhero movies forever.
“It was the first of the espionage, Jason Bourne-esque action movies at Marvel. After that, the movies shifted and had different themes and were more in touch with the world we live in, more grounded,” he says.
Bolstered by the words of another mentor, Morgan Freeman, Mackie feels no bitterness about his path.
“We did ‘Million Dollar Baby’ together, and when we were shooting this movie, I got offered a play. When you do Off Broadway, it’s $425 a week. In New York, that’s really $75 per week. I got a movie offer at the same time, and it was buckets of money. Three Home Depot buckets of money were going to be dropped off at my door,” Mackie says. “The script was awful; the whole thing was slimy. I went to Morgan’s trailer and asked him what he would do. He took a second and said, ‘Do the play. When Hollywood wants you, they’ll come get you. And when they come get you, they’ll pay for it.’ That blew my mind, and I left him that day with such a massive amount of confidence. He’s been a huge influence on me.”
He used the currency of that first Russo Brothers film and five subsequent ones to do what many creators and performers in Hollywood have done in recent years to help balance the scales of profit and representation in content: make things on his own.
Last year, Mackie produced and starred in “The Banker” — what would be Apple Studios’ first foray into original streaming film distribution and the awards landscape — through his banner Make It With Gravy. The film follows the true story of America’s first Black bankers and the white frontman they deployed to acquire the institution, all while supporting Black-owned businesses and communities in the process. A late-breaking scandal over sexual misconduct accusations involving the real-life family members of the film’s subjects delayed the release, overshooting awards-season deadlines and entangling the fledgling producer.
“It was a good lesson, and gave me a new perspective on the world around us. It’s very important to me that the women by my side are treated equally. It was a valuable lesson learned. I was very humbled by my sisters, for once not being mean to me,” he says.
Mackie is in development on the film “Signal Hill,” about the early days of lawyer Johnnie Cochran and the theater he brought to courtrooms long before the O.J. Simpson trial, and is hoping to secure the life story of civil rights pioneer Claudette Colvin as a vehicle for his directorial debut. Raising four sons of his own now, Mackie wants his off-screen work to make them well-rounded men.
“Look at Robin Williams,” he says. “He used to be crass and funny, and then he had kids, and he started doing all these family-friendly movies. Same thing with Eddie Murphy. I’m trying to curate my children’s experience with the things that I’ll be producing, rather than starring in. That’s what is most important. They know my job is my job; they know who I am. I’ve given up the idea of them ever thinking that I’m cool,” he says.
Jokes about the call sheet are among many of Mackie’s filming quirks. Jackson says that sets are often littered with hidden cigar stubs, to be fired up between takes or after long days. Bigelow says his rapport with crew has led to nights where the “clock was ticking but it was impossible to regain composure enough to shoot.” But according to Evans, no Mackie-ism is more famous than the phrase he bellows whenever his directors cut a scene: “Cut the check!”
Evans says this “will be forever associated with Mackie. I find myself saying it on sets all the time. I love it. But I’ll never be able to say it as well as him.”
As the man handing Mackie his armor, Evan says the Falcon’s “role within the Marvel universe has answered the call to action time and time again. He’s proven his courage, loyalty and reliability over multiple films. Sam has given so much, and he’s also lost a lot too. He believes in something bigger than himself, and that type of humility is necessary to carry the shield.”
Tumblr media
The question of Sam Wilson’s humanity will be explored at length in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” what Mackie calls a deeper showcase for both himself and Stan and their characters. It was a prospect that at first confused and frightened him.
“I didn’t think we could do on the television what we’d been doing on the big screen. I didn’t want to be the face of the first Marvel franchise to fail. Like, ‘See? We cast the Black dude, and now this shit is awful.’ That was a huge fear of mine, and also a huge responsibility with playing a Marvel character,” Mackie says.
He was quickly assuaged by the level of depth in the scripts from head writer Malcolm Spellman (“Empire,” “Truth Be Told”), especially when it came to the nuances of Wilson — a Black American man with no powers beyond his badass wings.
“Sam Wilson as played by Mackie is different than a Thor or a Black Panther, because he’s not from another planet or a king from another country,” Feige says. “He’s an African American man. He’s got experience in the military and doing grief counseling with soldiers who have PTSD. But where did he grow up? Who is his family? Mackie was excited to dig into it as this man, this Black man in particular, in the Marvel version of the world outside our window.”
Mackie celebrates Sam’s relatability in a universe full of mythological gods and lab-made enforcers. “I’m basically the eyes and ears of the audience, if you were put in that position where you could go out and fight alongside superheroes. It adds a really nice quality to him, that he’s a regular guy who can go out there and do special things,” Mackie says.
While bound by standard Marvel-grade secrecy, the actor confirms there have been no discussions of a second season for “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” As the majority of domestic movie theaters remain closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, he is equally unaware of the theatrical prospects for his Falcon character — or the Captain he may become by the end of this Disney Plus run. For now, he’s content to take up the mantle left by Boseman, a quietly understood pact of responsibility to Marvel-loving kids the world over.
“For Chad and I, [representation] was never a conversation that needed to be had because of our backgrounds. There was a hinted-at understanding between the two of us, because we’re both from humble beginnings in the South; we have very similar backgrounds. We knew what the game was. We knew going into it,” he says.
Outside comic book movies, Mackie is not done searching as a performer. There is a particular genre he would very much like to cut him a check.
“My team gets mad at me for saying this, but I would love to do a cheesy old-school ‘When Harry Met Sally’-type of project,” he says. “One of those movies where I’m working outside and have to take my shirt off because it’s too hot. I want a romantic comedy. I want to do every movie written for Matthew McConaughey that he passed on.”

What do u think about the new filming pics of natalia, gaten, and sadie? 😶
i’m gonna try putting this under a read more but if that doesn’t work please stop reading if you don’t want any kind of spoilers !! i’ll be using my spoiler tags, too, so remember to blacklist/filter out ‘s4′, ‘st4’, and the ‘spoilers’ tags !!
seriously -- this goes in depth about set pics, audition videos, and theories.
i’m so sorry this is so incredibly long lmao. i’m just sitting on all this s4 stuff and i want to talk about it.
bottom line, i’m excited. i’m just happy to see that they’re filming again tbh, and i hope that they’ll be staying as safe and healthy as possible and that there won’t be any more major delays.
as for the content, i’m pretty happy about that, too. i love all of these characters and dynamics pretty equally, so any content with any of them is great to me. i think there was also a pic of priah on set that day, too, but it was far away and you couldn’t really see her that well. ultimately, it seems like there will be a lot of s1 and s2 vibes with the whole school setting, as a large part of the main cast will be together at hawkins high instead of off doing their own things during the summer.
i know a ton of people want a winter season, but i personally think it’ll be spring and i think nancy’s outfit in particular kinda points in that direction. plus, i don’t think they’d skip past nancy, robin, and jonathan’s senior year or the party’s first year of high school/el’s potential first year of school ever. they could do fall again and start right where we left off in s3 with the 3 month time jump, or they could do flashbacks to the holidays and time we’ll be missing. but i think the bulk of the season will be set in spring. spring has easter, easter = resurrection, david keeps referring to hopper being alive as a resurrection, strangerwriters twitter specifically brought up making easter jokes with hopper’s name, etc.
i have to bring up the s4 audition tapes that surfaced a while ago. i know they’re a controversial topic (are they real? should we put any thought into them? do they actually reflect any part of s4 at all? why would these be open to the public if they’re legit? etc., etc.), but for this ask and for the part of me that’s grasping onto like... any potential s4 info, i’m gonna be looking at them as if they’re real.
this one is for ‘warden hatch’, who is the head of a psychiatric hospital. now, we know pennhurst is gonna be in s4. we know natalia filmed there before production shut down. people said maya was also on set that day. the scenes in this audition have him talking to two girls who happen to be very smart and have a taste for investigating. they’re obviously lying about being in college (or, at least, at that particular college with that particular professor), so i think it counts as confirmation that the two of them are still in high school, or at the very least working around hawkins. i just can’t see why nancy would be at hawkins high if she wasn’t still a student.
this one is for ‘eddie’, the ‘80s metalhead who is into metallica, loves d&d, and is a potential ally. he’s also apparently a drug dealer. so. his audition mentions hellfire a lot. ‘the hellfire club’ is the name of the first episode of s4. and now we have a picture of gaten on set in a shirt that says ‘hellfire club’. at the end of s3, in the news report, they allude to dungeons and dragons being linked to satanism. it seems like this is something the hellfire club (apparently, a club for lovers of d&d) will be dealing with. there’s also a present rivalry of ‘jocks v. nerds’ with the club and the basketball team, which we know will also play a part in s4. in the audition, ‘eddie’ is talking to ‘paul’ (”you were wearing your weird al shirt”) and ‘curtis’ (”you were wearing whatever shit your mom got you from the goddamned gap”), who are... obviously dustin and mike. they tell him that ‘fred’ (lucas) will be missing the club meeting because he has to play basketball.
which brings us to ‘jason’ and the most uh... obvious? of the audition tapes. this is a scene from a pep rally for a championship basketball game, where ‘jason’ literally name drops heather, billy, and hopper, who all “perished in that fire” (aka the cover up for the battle of starcourt). now, ‘jason’ is dating ‘molly’, a cheerleader who goes to ‘eddie’ to buy drugs (which i think is the second scene included in ‘eddie’s’ audition above). this second ‘jason’ audition has the pep rally scene as well as a scene where ‘jason’ tells the basketball team they need to hunt down the ‘freaks’ in the hellfire club (but especially ‘eddie’) because something happened to ‘molly’ and he blames them (bc of the whole drugs and satanists thing). one of the basketball players speaks up to tell him that they aren’t satanists, it’s just a d&d club. i believe this basketball player is lucas (”and how exactly is it you know all that?” “my sister, she’s like.. a total nerd. she plays sometimes.”) and the basketball team/jason have no idea that he’s affiliated with the hellfire club.
so there are a few different situations which could lead up to the scene in the pictures with dustin and max, but there’s one more audition i need to talk about first. this isn’t the full audition because the original was deleted, but mrs. kelley is the new guidance counselor at hawkins high. her audition video seems to be a scene where she’s talking to a student about their home life and their grades. the situation in the scene is very reminiscent of max’s current situation and i think the full scene even mentioned the loss of a brother or something ? so, one parent is drinking and having to work two jobs after one asshole stepparent leaves, but things are still better with them gone. i think max might be retreating a little, pulling away from the party. in fact, i think both physical and emotional distance is going to be a theme in s4. like, not only is everyone in different places, but they’re going to be drifting into new situations with new people and new interests and all these new personal conflicts, i guess.
so, if we’re operating under the assumption that the audition vids are legit, maybe the scene is after the pep rally and dustin is checking up on max. she’s been hit pretty hard by billy’s death bc despite everything, despite how messed up and complicated everything was, he’s still been right there with her for years and she had to watch him die brutally. maybe she doesn’t want to think about it and maybe when ‘jason’ mentions his loss, it brings everything to the surface. or, maybe the scene is after the hellfire club meeting. dustin could be asking if she’s seen lucas or if she wants to be his replacement at the meeting. whatever it is, it doesn’t look like it ends on a very positive note.
uhhhhh in conclusion, nancy’s outfit suggests a spring season, she should still be in school along with robin, dustin is a part of the hellfire club, max is emo, and i’m very excited and happy.

The BH 90210 Rewrite. 1x15: Palm Springs (AKA A Fling in Palm Springs)
Tumblr media
Rewrite Masterlist
Read the previous chapter here!
Chapter Summary: The gang heads to Palm Springs for President’s day weekend.
Warnings: swearing probably, lots of fluffy feelings, mentions of sex.
Words: 2,900
My work is not to be reposted and/or edited without my expressed written consent. (Reblogging is fine and encouraged!!!)
Feedback is incredibly appreciated!
A/N: Hope everyone enjoys this week’s episode! We are going to be skipping the next one but Laverne the gum-chomping waitress WILL make an appearance at some point in the series, so don’t worry. Next week the reader moves out with Brenda and deals with Class President election!
-
“You’re really gonna stay and work all weekend?” You launch yourself backwards onto the kitchen counter, the cold marble against your legs, “Kelly says anybody who’s anybody goes to Palm Springs.”
“You’re talking to Kelly again?” Your brother cocks an eyebrow at you as he cuts himself a brownie, stuffing half of it into his mouth.
“Well, no… Kelly told Brenda who told me— but what does it matter?” You steal the brownie pan from his other hand, and place it out of his reach, “Just because it’s from a secondary source doesn’t mean it’s not true. It’s a ritual. Like the geese flying south or something.”
“How do you expect to get there? It’s not like you have a car, or a bike, or can afford a plane ticket.” You stay silent for a moment, then give him a pleading, rosy smile. “Oh, no. No! You’re not taking Duke to Palm Springs.” Duke was Eric’s beloved cherry red ‘48 Ferrari. It was given to him on his eighteenth birthday, previously loved and adored by your father, and his father before that and blah blah blah.
“Please? I always take good care of it!” You beg, “I’ll even fill up the tank when I get back! What is it, a dollar per gallon?”
“Sorry. No way. You’ll have to ask Brenda,” he shrugs stubbornly, reaching around you and swiping the pan while you're preoccupied with the argument.
“I can’t! She’s riding with Kelly!”
“Then ask Brandon— look, this isn’t my problem, Y/N/N. Either find another ride or don’t go.”
-
“It has the original interior, the original grille work. It’s gorgeous,” Brandon enthuses, slipping his hand under your shirt and to your sides as you both lie in the backseat of Mondale, mid make-out session. Well, you were making out. Until he decided to stop it to talk about that car he wanted. Like guys often do.  “and it’s only twenty-five thousand dollars.”
“Twenty-five thousand? Brandon! No wonder your dad won’t buy you that thing. Dads are cheapskates, It’s just a fact of life.”
“Dylan‘s dad bought him a Porsche.”
“Babe, Dylan’s dad is facing a grand jury indictment,” you stifle a giggle as you pop a button off of his shirt.
“But my dad knows how hard I work,” Brandon grumbles, “And to top it all off, last night Nat told me that I can’t go to Palm Springs this weekend with you, and all of my friends because his sister is sick and now I have to work all weekend. But hey, you don’t hear me complaining, do ya?”
“Yes. Yes I do.”
-
“Hey there!” You’re greeted  almost immediately by Brandon upon entering the Peach Pit, who’s over at the far end of the counter with a little blond boy. “What a nice surprise. I thought you’d be in packing mode for your trip… but knowing you, you packed early, didn’t you?”
“Always do,” you nod, taking the seat in front of him. You hand Brandon a modest wad of cash and kiss his cheek, making him smile. He mumbles a thanks as he stuffs it into his pocket and hands you a menu.
“Hey… do you ever get the feeling that the entire world is flying in first class, and you’re stuck with a folding chair in the baggage compartment?” He takes your hand in his, leaning over the counter.
“Never,” you deadpan. He studies your face, causing you to giggle into his shoulder.
“Liar!” He laughs genuinely, his eyes crinkling at the edges,“you total liar!”  He straightens himself out, “This is Curtis.” He gestures to the adorable little boy beside you, “the hangout king of Beverly Hills.”
“It’s a free country, I can hang out if I want!” The little boy whines.
“Hey, hey, relax, sport. No one said you couldn’t… but does your mom know how much time you spend here?”
“She’s the one that brung me! I told her the food’s not that good," Curtis criticizes, mowing down a plate of greasy french fries.
“See what I have to put up with to make a buck?” Brandon teases, grabbing a plate of food from the kitchen and dashing off to deliver it to a table. Once he’s gone, Curtis turns his stool to you.
“Is he your boyfriend?”
“Oh! Well, uh… no. But he’s… not not my boyfriend,” you waffle. Curtis narrows his eyes, confused. “Look, it’s complicated, kid."
“You give him that friendship bracelet he’s wearing?”
“Yeah, actually… he told you about that?”
The kid dodges your question, chewing on the straw of his drink, “Why aren’t you wearing one?”
“It's a long story, Curtis. Certainly one you don't have time for, okay?"
"I got plenty of time."
-
You couldn’t ride with your brother, you couldn’t ride with Brandon, there’s no way in hell you’re riding with Steve… that left one option. Brenda, Kelly, and Donna.
“Donna,” Kelly giggles, “we’re not going to Europe. You don’t need three bags!”
“Kelly, I have to dress according to the guys we meet. I mean— high school guys, college guys, grad school guys, dropout guys— you cannot dress the same for all guys. No,” Donna shakes her head disapprovingly, like she just dropped a fashion truth-bomb on all three of you. To be honest, though, she kind of did.
“I guess she has a point,” you laugh, propping yourself up against a locker, “Bring everything.”
Then Steve saunters over, in his usual confusingly patterned button-down, an agitated look spread across his face. He nods down to the innumerable bags on the floor.
“What, are we going to France?” He scoffs, only taking a moment before continuing, “Will you guys come on? There’s gonna be a lot of traffic on the roads." Gee, wonder what’s making him so delightful this afternoon.
“Hey gang!” Oh no. David Silver? What was he doing here? “Are we going to have a blast or what? Huh?” We?
The rest of the group is just as lost as you are, exchanging silent looks of terror to the person next to them. Steve takes note of this and clears his throat.
“There’s been a uh, slight change in plans.”
-
“It’s weird, I mean I want to be with Dylan and everything, but part of me just wants to get it over with. Like I’m the last person that hasn’t done it yet." Brenda confides uneasily as you all stand against Kelly’s convertible, waiting as the tank fills up.
“Brenda… you are,” Kelly replies.
“No you’re not!" You assure her,  "Look, Bren, you’re really gonna like it… I think." Ha. Like you know any more than she does. Donna nods in agreement.
“Yeah, totally… probably. Maybe? I—“
Kelly cuts Donna off, “Listen, who would you rather be with? Dylan McKay or David Silver?”
“Bren, Dylan’s a wonderful guy. You’re gonna have a great time! And you brought protection, so there’s nothing to be worried about!” You place a soothing hand on her arm.
“Right!” Brenda smiles, “I mean, I care about him, he cares about me, it’s gonna be great, right?”
-
“My grandparents collect anything they can get their hands on,” David guides the four of you, sans Brenda plus Steve, as you wander his grandparents' house. It’s definitely nice, definitely big… kinda smells like patchouli and sunscreen in the best way. “When I was younger I used to travel with them but my dad’s mad at them about something so I don’t see ‘em much anymore.”
“What’s he mad about?” Donna asks.
“Well, my grandparents like my mom and think it’s, y’know, bad he wants to divorce her... Come on,” he waves you all over to him as he escapes through the back door, “I saved the best for last.” You reluctantly follow behind him, your shoes clacking down the concrete steps and into the depths of his backyard. It was gorgeous— a huge pool, palm trees, brick-lined lounging areas. You could get used to this.
“Dude, we are definitely styling out here in this little desert oasis,” Steve grins, “David, I always knew you had potential.” No you didn’t.
“Thanks, Steve,” David begins to venture further back, “but you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! Look, if anyone gets in the mood, you climb up this little terrace here to this hidden nook and nobody will bother you.” You step up another flight of brick-lined concrete stairs and through a small patch of greenery, to be met with a cute little private hot tub… with people in it.
“David?” The old woman gasps, clutching her small champagne flute.
“Grandma?”
“What the hell are you doing here?” The senior man, presumably (and hopefully) his grandfather groans.
-
“It was an amaaaazing trip!” David’s grandmother raves, pouring pretzels into a glass bowl as the group is gathered around the kitchen island.
“It was indescribable,” his grandfather agrees excitedly, “we would dance every night under the stars.” He pulls Kelly from her stool, picking her up and spinning her around as if they were about to tango.
“Ooh! Can somebody pull the ice cream?” His grandma asks.
“Yeah, sure,” Donna smiles.
“Triple. Chocolate. Chip. I mean, If we’re gonna do it, we should do it right.” Steve chuckles politely at the woman, though he looks like he wants to put a gun to his head.
“Well, I’ve never seen so many old fogies on one boat in my whole life. I mean, a floating rest home is what it was!” His grandpa laughs heartily, getting ice cream bowls from the cupboard,
“Oh, Henry, that’s not so. But hey, one day we woke up on the boat and we both said ‘Let’s go home!’” Funny. That’s exactly what you were thinking. “I mean, we missed our little house in the desert.”
“We sure did,” Henry smiles happily, grabbing his wife’s jaw gently and planting a big smooch on her. “And lucky for us, we would have missed you if we didn’t cut our trip short!”
“Uh, well you guys must be really tired. Huh?” David chuckles awkwardly.
“Oh, we’re exhausted!” The woman nods, “but hey, who cares? I am so excited to see you! And to finally meet some of your friends! Hey! Why don’t we all stay up late, chow down on the snacks, and get to know each other?” Oh, joy.
-
“This way ladies,” David’s grandma guides the three of you upstairs, her hand on your shoulder. “You’re gonna go up these stairs, down the hall, first door on your right, and you are gonna love it.” You hop up the steps with Kelly and Donna, bags in hand.
“Did you guys hear her?” Kelly starts, opening the door to the room and throwing her bags on an empty bed. Hey, she acknowledged you. That’s a start. “She said she was gonna invite all the cute guys from the neighborhood over to the pool tomorrow!”
“Steve is not gonna like that,” Donna
“Oh, who cares?” Kelly snickers, “I wonder how Brenda’s doing.”
“‘Oh! Dylan, what beautiful eyes you have!’” You joke, throwing your hand to your forehead and bowing backwards.
“‘Oh, Brenda, you are so exquisite!’” Donna joins in, giggling.
“Barf.”
-
You splash your feet in the Silver's pool, crowds of people surrounding it. Overwhelmed by the vast amount of new people, you're off by yourself, kicking the water around, staring at your feet.
"You know, there's room on this raft for two." You look up to Steve, lying back on a giant inflatable alligator. Ugh, if only it was a real one.
"Why don't you ask your new girlfriends?" You point behind you to the two girls, who you could only think to describe as biker babes, lounging together. Porcelain white skin, spiked black bikinis, way more makeup than you need for a pool party. "They look pretty interested."
"Can you imagine what it would be like if you were interested? You know, me instead of Brandon?" You feign a gag, shaking your head.
"I don't really want to, Steve," you cringe dramatically as he chuckles, "but thanks for getting that thought haunting my dreams forever. Really appreciate it."
"Remember—" He wags his pointer finger at your face, eyes narrowing lightheartedly, "I saw you first." He puts his foot flat against the concrete wall of the pool, kicking off, but as soon as he's far enough— he guffaws. Of course he laughs at his own jokes.
-
"Dylan, hi!" You practically leap over to him in the foyer, your damp feet leaving faint footprints on the cold floor.  "So?"
He shakes his head, brows furrowed ever so slightly, "So?"
"How'd it go?" You raise your eyebrows excitedly.
"How'd what go?"
"With Brenda!" He groans at that.
"Don't ask."
"Well, it's too late, I already did."
"What's with you girls?" Oh, this should be good. "You see a guy with another girl and you immediately think they're sleeping with her?! What is that?! I mean, every time a female customer goes into the Pit-- do you lose it at Brandon?"
"Can't say I do. They usually want him. But thankfully it's not the other way around… look, if this is about the other Walsh-- and McKay, it better be, or else I have questions-- just talk to her about it. Have an adult conversation."
"Easy for you to say, you're dating the king of good family values. The kid's a Hartley House episode."
-
You open the fridge in the kitchen, helping David’s grandparents scoop out ice cream. You fidget with the scoop in your hands before setting it down. After a devastating loss of Charades, you had to comfort your friends with ice cream. It was the only option, really.
“How do you guys do it?” They both look up from the bowls to stare at you. “The whole long-term relationship thing,” you clarify. “It’s just so… scary.”
“You’re right,” Henry nods, “It’s very scary. Trusting someone, with your heart, your intimate feelings. I mean, before we got married, Adele broke up with me seven different times. Running for the hills was our solution to every problem. Giving yourself to that person— trusting that they’re going to cherish you, to value you and every intimate part of yourself— that is the hardest thing.”
Adele jumps in, “And you have to accept each other for who you are. For every flaw and every perfection, you have to let the other person be who they are. But when you do find the person you can really be yourself with, who you can have fun with, and fully trust… it is the greatest feeling in the world.” She takes the scoop from in front of you and begins scooping. “Who is he? It’s not David, is it?”
You giggle, “No. No, it’s not David. His name’s Brandon, he’s—“ you can’t stop a grin from slowly breaking out on your face, “He’s great. He’s kind, and considerate, and totally crazy about me... but it’s still scary, y’know? My last relationship didn’t exactly end on great terms. And if I barely even liked the other guy but I was still totally obliterated by it ending… I can’t imagine how I’d feel with Brandon. I’ve never felt this way about anyone in my life. I guess you can imagine how much of a major scare that is, huh?”
“Seven break-ups, sweetheart. I can imagine.”
-
"He even set up a meal plan for the kid! I can show you the security cameras if you want to see them," Nat indulges. You never thought you’d say this, but you were thrilled to be back in Beverly Hills. You missed your own bed, the Peach Pit… the cute waiter at the Peach Pit. And you’re thrilled to be eating something that isn’t ice cream.
"Oh, don't you dare! I cannot handle any more of that guy being good with kids or else he's gonna get me to procreate with him-- and nobody wants a bunch of  little Walshes running around here," you snort, stirring your water mindlessly with the straw. Nat shrugs as he picks up an order.
“I could use the extra help!” As per usual, he booms out in laughter, walking away with the plate of food.
“What’s he so happy about?” You twist your head to the kitchen and you’re faced with your overtly-paternal and charitable lover.
“Oh, it’s nothing. Just you fathering a sweet little homeless boy for the weekend,” you have to halt yourself from fawning over him. He’s probably the only teenage boy that would tolerate a little kid, let alone help them out like he did.
“He told you about that?”
“You mean how you not only befriended the little boy, but fed him for free, and made sure that his whole family would stay fed until they got back on their feet? Yeah, he might’ve. I mean I laughed, I cried— it was the feel-good story of the year, B.” He smiles at his feet as he ties his apron around his waist.
“I really missed you this weekend, Y/N/N.”
“Well, I’m here to stay now,” you smile as he kisses the top of your head.
“I’m a real lucky guy, you know that?”
“That’s funny. I was about to say the same thing.”

Puppy Love Part 4 Debriefing Dinner
Jason was sitting at the diner with his head pressed against the table. His dad and oldest brother Grant were across from him. “It couldn’t have gone that badly,” Grant tried.
“It went much worse,” Jason spoke directly into the table.
“Son, get your face off the table, you’ll get syrup in your hair.” Dad threw in. He did as he was told, mostly because he really didn’t want sticky shit from the previous diner getting in his hair. “What happened?”
“Lucky knocked over a vase full of flowers and a portrait of Bruce Wayne’s parents,” Jason moped as he ran hands down his face. When he saw the irritable look his father was giving him, he quickly added; “This fucking beast of a dog frightened Lucky, it wasn’t his fault.”
Grant grinned and took a sip of his coffee. “Your kids will have no discipline whatsoever. It will always be everyone else’s fault.”
Jason rolled his eyes and threw up a middle finger.
“What happened after?” Dad asked.
Jason scowled at his father. He knew damned well that Dad just wanted to know what discomfort he’d caused Bruce Wayne, aka Batman. His old man lived to rile up the caped “superheroes”. The sheer amount of pleasure he got from it was almost perverse.
“So, Bruce Wayne starts in on his interrogation once we’re all seated. Where are you from, what do you do for a living, easy questions, right?” His dad and brother nod. “Well they weren’t! Despite having prepared answers all my fucking life, I just blurt the first thing that comes to mind since I know me and Dad are heading out of the country soon.”
“What’d you tell them you do for a living?” Grant asked.
“Flight attendant.” Jason sighed.
Grant and Dad both laughed. “Dude,” Grant recovered first. “You know how to fly. Billy and I taught you! Why didn’t you just tell them you were a pilot?”
Jason blushed. “I told you, my mind just kind of… blanked.”
“Oh, Son,” Dad shook his head. “At least there is no way Bruce Wayne thinks you’re Nemesis.”
“Deadly mercenary by night, peppy flight attendant by day!” Grant laughed again. “Oh wow, Kid, you really went with flight attendant?” Jason leaned back against the back of his booth and crossed his arms. “Oh Joey’s gonna love this,” Grant continued. “I can just picture it now, big-bad Jace Wilson offering out little packets of pretzels and a cookie.”
“Go fuck yourself, Grant,” Jason sneered.
“Hey, now, that’s no way for a flight attendant to talk,” Dad threw in before the two idiots both busted out in raucous laughter.
Jason waited for them to settle down again. He just knew that by the end of the night Rose, Billy and Joey would all know about his lapse in judgement.
“Well, it worked though, right?” Grant asked a few minutes later as he wiped a stray tear from his blue eyes. “I mean, they bought it.”
Jason nodded. “Yeah, I think that’s what made it so much worse.”
“Oh?” Dad grinned. “What happened.”
“His little brother… Damian.” Jason snorted. “That little shit got all haughty and superior. ‘You mean to tell me you have an FBI agent for one brother, a successful composer for another, and a sister in college and all you attained to be was a stewardess? Once again, Dick, your taste in men has proven lackluster.’
“God I just wanted to knock him out of his chair. But then, the middle brother beat me to it,” Jason smiled. “That part actually went okay.”
“Sounds like the three of us,” Grant grinned. “Remember that time Billy brought that one lady over?”
Jason nodded and laughed. “Oh yeah! Audrey Curtis. You dumped pepper in Joey’s hot cocoa, but he thought it was me, so he flung mashed potatoes when I wasn’t looking!”
“It was a great food fight, one of our best yet,” Grant beamed proudly.
Dad shook his head as he scratched as his goatee. “Yeah, but Billy got back at all three of you little brats for ruining his date.”
Jason snorted as he laughed at the memory. “Itching powder in our underwear. Man… that was awesome.”
Grant nodded in agreement.
“You’d think the three of you little terrors would have learned,” Dad shook his head and took a drink of his own coffee.
“We’re Wilsons,” Grant reminded. “We’re too stubborn to learn our lesson.”
Jason couldn’t help but feel much better. Even if his own family had teased him a bit, it was nice to be around Grant, even nicer that he’d taken such a long drive to do it. Of everyone in the family, Grant hated road trips the most. Even a four hour one like the one he’d taken to get to Gotham was normally three hours and thirty minutes too long.
He felt his phone vibrate and pulled it out. It was just a text from Dick confirming their next date and where to meet.
“Oh, I know that smile,” Dad teased. “the current piece of ass is texting him.”
“Hey, what does this one do again?” Grant asked.
“He’s a vet,” Dad answered for Jason while he typed a quick reply. “He’s why your brother has a dog.”
Grant grimaced. “You aren’t going to keep it, are you Jace? I mean, you and Dad travel so much as it is, and dogs needs discipline and stability. You know, like a real relationship requires.”
Jason set his phone down and glared up at his brother. “I can handle it. Lucky’s very smart, he’s been super easy to train. Barely an inconvenience. As for Dick, he’s fine with the travel. We’re taking this slow to begin with anyhow.”
Grant rolled his eyes. “As if you’ve ever taken anything slow in your life.”
“He’s gotta point, Jace,” Dad smirked. “You go from flirting, to dinner, to sex within the same interaction most of the time. You want this guy to last and not be just another notch on that belt of yours, you need to think things through.”
Grant took a deep breath. “Maybe you should consider college.”
Jason cringed at how quickly Dad turned on Grant, but his brother clearly expected it as he faced their father. “Look, Dad. Joey and I took the news of Jace working with you pretty well I think,” Grant began. “But, it’s not a safe job and he’s risking a hell of a lot more than you are.
“And you,” Grant turned his eyes on Jason. “maybe adopting a dog and trying to make a real relationship with this vet guy is a sign that you’re not as happy working with Dad as you thought you were? Maybe sub-consciously you’re tired of this type of work. Maybe you want something more stable and structured.”
Jason immediately shook his head. “No, no. You don’t get to put this on Dad, Grant. I like what I do. I enjoy it. It’s challenging and fun and needed. What we do is crucial,” Jason stated firmly. “And I’m warning you right now, both of you,” he looked to each of them. “You convince Dad to stop working with me, it won’t change a thing. I’ll just work solo.”
Both men were silent for several moments before Dad sighed. “Jace’s right. How do you think he started in the first place? I couldn’t keep him from following me no matter what I tried. Even Billy couldn’t keep him home.”
Grant frowned. “You could do what I do, Jace. We’re crucial, too.”
“Too much red tape.” Jason answered honestly.
“Sound just like Dad,” Grant grumbled before taking a drink of his coffee. He seemed to have finished it off as he pushed it to the side and checked his watch. His eyes widened a touch. “I need to get on the road. I still want you both to knock this shit off, but it was really good catching up again.”
They all three stood up and got out of their seats before exchanging hugs.
Grant gave Jason a kiss on the cheek. “You ever change your mind, you’d make a great field agent, Jace.”
“Anyone ever tell you that you should be a military recruiter?” Jason teased.
“Better than a flight attendant,” Grant retorted.

Second Chances - Arrow Music Notes 5x11
Second chances is an over-arching theme for Arrow especially in regards to Oliver Queen.  Is it possible to redeem oneself?  To overcome being a murderer, a vigilante, or thirsty for vengeance? Should others give you a second chance to do good?  How do you live with yourself and the choices you made?  Should you be alone or do you need others to help you?
Oliver and Tina Bolman/Dinah Drake
Oliver decides to make good on his promise to train a new Black Canary and yet becomes reticent in actually choosing one to the frustration of the team.  When Curtis mentions an urban legend (Tina) and that she has a cry, the music changes from fun lair electronics to sixteenths in the strings (adding excitement) and a higher piano melody begins splitting in the middle of a scale  and alternating between the low and high notes leaving a slightly unsettled feeling reflecting Oliver’s emotions. He talks to Diggle who made an excellent point (as he always does) that they are not replacing Laurel but someone to take over her role while a horn plays Laurel’s Canary Theme.
Tumblr media
Oliver, Rene and Curtis meet Tina and then fail to convince her to join their team.  Oliver calls Captain Singh (police captain in The Flash) as they discover Tina worked for SCPD and then texts Barry to convince Singh that he is legit as the Green Arrow.  This leads to a fun musical cameo of Barry’s Flash music as well as a Central City tone with harp mixed with Arrow-like strings and chords.
Tumblr media
The music that accompanies Tina (outside of her Canary theme that changes the last note from Laurel’s BC theme) and the teams interactions is on the darker side.  It resembles music back in earlier moments with the recruits (5x02 - “On the Line”, 5x03 - fight with Stardust) as well as Season 1 Oliver and the Huntress.  Tina is not trusting of the Arrow or his team and is hellbent on revenge.  In fact, her story (not to mention music) reminds me a lot of Helena Bertinelli, darker and slightly more electronic (”Damn Vigilantes” - 2x17).  The final fight scene’s music was reminiscent of “Damaged” in Season 1.  Oliver tries to stop Tina from killing Sonus and his electric guitar harmonics play(also present when he revealed his identity earlier in the episode).  He tries to convince Tina that she is better than he is.  He recognizes it might be too late for him for a second chance but tries to prevent her from walking down that dark path.  This is Oliver again trying to help guide towards justice.  Tina (like Helena) chooses revenge and yet feels empty once her object of hate is dead.
Tumblr media
While Oliver believes that he failed both Tina and Laurel’s legacy, Tina shows up to his mayoral office seeking a second chance.  She wants to know how he lives with the dark choices he has made and the pain.  Oliver does not have all the answers but one thing he has learned over the past 5 years (especially the past year) is that he could not do it alone.  Which is what he offers to Tina: a home and a team to help walk alongside her.  The musical theme playing is “Because of Me” from 2x21 minus the Moira themes.  The original version happens when Diggle and Felicity find Oliver in his surprise back-up lair after missing Moira’s funeral.  Oliver felt tremendous pain and guilt over Moira’s death and is convinced that the only way for it to end is hand himself over to Slade.  He knew he could have prevented it by curing Slade years ago and now is reaping the results.  He is completely without hope (although Felicity and Diggle are not).  Here, Tina is dealing with the guilt of the man she loved being killed.  Oliver is now the one offering hope. Oliver believes he failed Laurel but here he can have a second chance with her legacy: Tina or Dinah as she reveals her true name at the end.
Tumblr media
Felicity Smoak aka Ghost Fox Goddess
Adrian Chase discovers a file had existed that would clear Diggle but has since disappeared.  This gives Felicity a chance to hack into the NSA (something she had missed) in order to save Diggle.  In trying to find it, she entered the dark web and was contacted by someone via her old college hacker name to meet in person.  As soon as Felicity meets this Kojo Sledgehammer (who turns out to be a girl very similar in personality and glasses), fun Felicity strings begin.  This used to be present in humor moments for Felicity especially at Palmer Tech throughout the past few seasons but last heard in 5x02.  This shows Felicity’s relief that she is not meeting someone dangerous, brings out the humor in two very similar ladies, but also fits with the numerous mentions of working at Palmer Tech as does the clarinet (often present in Palmer Tech as well).  As Felicity explains her reason for returning to the dark net, harp (Felicity’s instrument) begins to play.  Then the music takes a darker tone as Felicity is handed the flash-drive “Pandora” with many government secrets. An organ begins playing as Kojo tells Felicity she intends to inspire her to become a hacktivist again in the same way she was inspired.  Organ is not an instrument used in Arrow’s soundscape.  In soundtracks, organ is usually used for three purposes in music: epic moments (think Interstellar or coronations), church (especially in period dramas), or warning of bad things coming.  This moment definitely fits into the latter.
Tumblr media
Felicity tells Oliver the good news that they can exonerate John but visibly hesitates (which he notices) and decides not to share how she got the file.  An electric guitar repeats the same note lending unease as Felicity keeps a secret.  Goth Felicity’s music (3x05, 4x11) was a repeated single rhythmic note but a different kind of electronic timbre (similar to the organ). It hints back to Felicity’s darker background as string patterns (a variation on the organ motif above) begin while she downloads Pandora (in addition to wooden percussion).  The final motif begins with a tri-tone (known as the Devil’s interval in the medieval ages and the most dissonant).  Felicity is heading down a dark path.
Tumblr media
Talia/Flashbacks
It has been awhile since I have been excited about meeting a new character in the Flashbacks but Talia is fantastic.  As Oliver wakes up from his experience/beating from last week, he sees Shado’s hood and his past out on display to the melody “See it, remember” on crutales (Season 3).  These 4ths on the crutales (tuned little gongs or bells) were present primarily for Tatsu both in the present and flashbacks as well as Thea’s training under Malcolm in 3x03 and Roy using meditation to remember his mirakiru actions.  Here, the motif begins as a mystery Asian woman visually reminds him of his past.  As Talia pulls Oliver’s arm back and knocks him over, her theme (used each time she appears for the rest of the episode) begins. It has a mysterious and exotic quality (it is as if the electric guitar was melded with the duduk or ney flute).  Her theme is also very similar to Oliver’s hero 1 theme in horns.  Perhaps because she helps inspire him to become the Hood?
Tumblr media
The cimbalom (Russia) makes another appearance as Oliver sees his Russian target (provided by Talia) before fighting and killing him and his men.  Oliver hated that his monster came out but Talia wanted to remind him that he could use and channel this anger/monster inside.  As she challenges him and accuses him of being afraid of who he has become, Oliver’s electric guitar harmonics begin (a motif in hammered dulcimer and violins in the pilot as he pulls out the bow when setting up the lair and trains/shoots tennis balls “Setting Up the Lair”).  These theme also occurred in this form in 4x01 as Oliver shares with Felicity his concerns that he only brought darkness with him (since Lian Yu) which is why he was reticent to return as the Arrow and embrace darkness once again.  In these flashbacks, Oliver is beginning his journey into the Hood.  Talia tells him to essentially divide that darkness and monster from Oliver Queen so that he could honor his father’s wish and return to Starling City.  Horn takes over the motif as she gives him the “become something else” speech.  As Oliver puts on the Hood outfit for the first time and receives the bow from Talia, the Arrow/Hood themes return reminiscent of Season 1 and pilot scoring.  However, there are subtle differences as this is the beginning of this hero and vigilante persona.  A few chords and a slightly different melody in the violin (a few dissonances) to add a new color to a familiar scene.  I enjoy how each time Oliver suits up for the first time as the Hood, the Arrow, or the Green Arrow, there are small variations on the motives and instruments that define Arrow and it’s hero.
Tumblr media
Extra Notes
- When Diggle is informed that he is being released from jail, his piano (Andy) theme plays.  This motif may be turning into a Diggle theme without reference to the brothers or it is a reminder of why John joined the army (and got into the whole debacle) in the first place.  His Diggle theme 2 in brass plays as Oliver tells him he can go home.
Tumblr media
A big thank you to @jorahandal for tweeting out different music cues for this episode (especially “Because of Me“).  Your memory for Arrow’s soundtrack is truly impressive as well as your detective work for the Canary themes.

Of late, Daddy has been on my mind, especially this week. Two reasons, in particular. First, I must decide where to hang my picture of him and a watercolor by his mother, Mary Dickson. Everything must go on the walls somewhere. Second, I ventured out into the world this week. I was invited and went to a luncheon/art project event, called “The Wisdom Cafe”, in Valbonne.
Let me explain: Sara Randall and Cy Todd, two friends from the American Club of the Riviera, have formed a group that meets twice a month in Valbonne – usually a luncheon event held at a restaurant, Les Pierres Rouges, with program of some sort.  However, this Thursday event was different.  Sara and Cy invited their artist friend, Laura McCollough from San Diego, California, to share her story and give the group an art lesson! First, we had a fun luncheon – interesting women with interesting stories from everywhere. Then, Laura and her daughter Rebecca led the group a hands-on art project.  The assignment was to find a meaningful sentence or a phrase, choose a basic color (blue or grey acrylic / red and yellow watercolors), and go with it.  I knew instantly my sentence “Rough Seas Make Good Sailors”.  I chose blue acrylic and went for gold.  Haha.  Here is my result. No comment.
After I got home, I put my “artwork” on the book shelf and thought about Daddy. He loved inspirational phrases and sentences and books and pamphlets and pictures.  “Go to It!” “Be Kind to One Another”. “When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going!”  I had to read Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People” (ugh) before he would let me to go to Camp Dixie in Clayton, Georgia (which I LOVED).  People call him “gracious” and “a perfect gentlemen”. I thought of him as witty and a cut-up. Always telling a joke or three, laughing and having a good time.  He loved people; people loved him.  He could talk for hours to farmers, taking me with him to “visit”.  He also loved his Jack Daniels Black Label (a bottle always under the sink in the kitchen) and his Elks Club – especially the downstairs for members only (men) with card games and slot machines.
I still have a picture of him that I have had for ages. It is going on the wall somewhere. Don’t remember how I got it.  I just remember it hanging for years above the organ in the Music Room.  Daddy loved organ music. One day I came home from school to find an organ, sitting in the Music Room with my piano.  That is when I found out that Daddy like to pick out hymns on that organ. He didn’t know what he was doing, mind you, but that did not keep him from doing it.  Here, you get two for one – picture of Daddy and picture of me taking the picture.
At that time, I was practicing the piano a lot, getting to be quite good. (Actually, I was competing with my sister Barbara and Janice Martin next door. I wanted to be as “technically proficient” as Mrs. Feldman said Barbara was. AND, Janice played by ear. Damn! HOW DID SHE DO THAT????? No, I had to practice and practice and practice. I wanted to show off in a private piano recital when I graduated from GHS (Gainesville High School). Plus, I had been accepted into the School of Music at the University of Wisconsin. My instrument was piano. I played Chopin’s Revolutionary Etude at my audition. I was also proud of my work with Martha Finger Stratton (my piano teacher), playing Mendelssohn Concerto for Two Pianos in E Major. I still have the Steinway Daddy bought me when I was twelve.  It is the elephant in the room.  I love it. When I look at it and play it every day, I feel the pride he had for me and my accomplishments, constantly urging me to do more and be better.
I still have my grandmother’s painting. Daddy’s mother was Mary Tallulah Dickson – from Texas.  I don’t know how she got to Gainesville.  Just know she was an art teacher at Brenau College. Beautiful girl.
Mother and Daddy had a watercolor of hers (Mary Dickson aka Mary Dickson Jewell aka Mary Jewell Loudermilk aka “Mama Loudermilk”).  They inherited it at some point. It  had hung at Mama and Papa Loudermilk’s house for years. It then moved to Aunt Mary and Uncle Joe’s house, along with Mama Loudermilk, when Papa Loudermilk died. Then Uncle Joe, Aunt Mary, and Mama Loudermilk all died. As a result, Uncle Beamus (Edgar Herman Jewell, Jr. aka Daddy’s brother) inherited that house and its “stuff”. After Uncle Beamus died (he had married Edith Lilly), he left a widow and a will, leaving Mary Dickson’s artwork to Mother and Daddy.  I just remember seeing that watercolor in the Music Room over the “whatnot shelf” (remember those) and loving it.  (Are you following all of this? There will be a test, later.)  All three of us (Patricia, Barbara, and I) wanted THAT watercolor. So, Mother made us draw straws. I WON!  When Mother died, I shipped that watercolor to California and got it re-framed.
The more I see it, the more impressed I am with Mary Dickson.  I would like to know her better.  Look at the detail in this piece. So beautiful.
I don’t have a lot of things. But, I still have Daddy’s Hamilton gold watch with Daddy’s initials on the back. He wore this wind-up watch for years. After he died, Mother gave it to me because she knew I had coveted it. After I got to France, I had it repaired and wear it frequently.  I love it.
Engraving on the back.
I still have Mary Dickson’s two spoons with her initials on them. “MTD”. I was named Tallulah after Mary Tallulah Dickson (aka Mama Loudermilk) and Mary Tallulah Jewell (Aunt Mary). So, when Aunt Mary died, she left me all the things that had “Tallulah” name or initials on them. I got some engraved silver and her mink pieces with her name on the lining.  The minks are long gone, but I still some silverware.  I love using a spoon that I know Mary Dickson used.  Who gave it to her? What was her family of origin like? Why don’t we know more about her – where she came from, who her people were? No one ever talked about her that I can remember. She was the matriarch of the family, a leader before her time.
I have Daddy’s gold cuff links and tie clip with a chicken on them that he wore all the time.
I have his chicken nutcracker. We always had a nut bowl in the kitchen for the pecans that fell off the tree in our side yard.  (Daddy loved pecans, not walnuts.)
When I was growing up, Daddy would take me to the office (J. D. Jewell, Inc.) and ask his secretary, Mrs. Goforth, to teach me how to file things. Then, he would pay me for my work. I loved every minute of it. In his office behind his desk hung the painting in this photograph. Somewhere along the line, I acquired it.  I still love it.
There have been a lot of articles about Daddy, but only one book that I know of, Homer Myers “Pass The Chicken Please, The Life and Times of Jesse Jewell”. It is quite good and accurate, as far as I know, regarding the Company and Barbara’s family and Patricia’s family. Not accurate about my family.  I don’t like that part.
I have the book “Leaders in Georgia, In Education, In Business, and In the Arts”, published in 1955 by Curtis Printing Company, Inc. Daddy’s picture and profile are on page 57.
Maybe more books will be written about him. I have begged my niece Debby aka Deb Prince Kroll, a wonderful writer, to write it, using all the articles she has in a box in her attic.  I may write one.  Mine would be from a subjective point of view. I want someone to write an extensive history of his story and the difficult times facing North Georgia after the Great Depression.  These people prevailed.  SO WILL WE.
“The End of the Beginning” Of late, Daddy has been on my mind, especially this week. Two reasons, in particular. First, I must decide where to hang my picture of him and a watercolor by his mother, Mary Dickson.

West Week Ever: Pop Culture In Review - 5/26/17
Here we are, on the verge of a 3-day weekend, which means nobody’s gonna read this thing. Still, “the show must go on”…
Well, the week was filled with spider news, as last Friday Sony announced that Tom Hardy will star in a Venom film. If you’re not “in the know”, Venom is a Spider-Man villain comprised of an alien symbiote suit and Peter Parker’s professional rival, Eddie Brock. Sadly, the film’s not meant to cross over with Spider-Man: Homecoming or any bit of Tom Holland’s portrayal. I’m starting to think Sony’s deal with Marvel Studios is actually a bad thing, as it seems like Spidey’s addition to the MCU is to the detriment of his expanded universe to which Sony still owns the rights. I don’t really care about a Venom without a Spider-Man. To add to that, yesterday, Sony announced a film starring Spider-Man supporting cast members Silver Sable and Black Cat, to be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball). I really don’t think there’s much to say about these characters without the possibility of a Spider-Man cameo. I get where Sony’s coming from; they have all these characters, so they might as well do something with them. That said, earlier talks made it sound like they were building their own Spider-Man-centric film universe, but since the MCU deal went through, Spider-Man no longer seems to be part of the equation.
Meanwhile, the Licensing Expo was this week, and we got our first look at the poster for the animated Spider-Man movie, starring Miles Morales. Apparently it was created by a child. Maybe a Make-A-Wish kid? Seriously, that thing is terrible.
youtube
It wasn’t all bad Spider News, however, as we got the third trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming. They’re basically giving away the movie at this point, but I’m still a guaranteed butt in a seat. A lot of people are having issues with it, but I kinda like that this is basically Iron Man 4. I really didn’t need a new Spider-Man, so throwing Tony Stark in there is a good way to get me interested. I mean, I liked Tobey Maguire. I liked Andrew Garfield. I’m sure I’ll like Holland, but I’m kinda tired of the Spider-Man revolving door. Now that he’s tied into the MCU, I hope the Holland casting sticks. Then again, we’ve had three Hulks already, so…
This poster, however, is horrendous, but endearingly so. I mean, it’s really bad Photoshop, but I still kinda like it. It’s busier than Times Square at rush hour, but I love it in all its ugliness. It looks like it should be airbrushed on a denim jacket at the mall.
Across the aisle, things aren’t going so well for the DC movie slate, either. First up, Doug Liman has dropped out of directing the Justice League Dark film due to his commitment to Lionsgate’s adaptation of the young adult series Chaos Walking. In case you didn’t know, Justice League Dark would focus on the more mystical DC Comics characters, like John Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman and others, battling supernatural threats – ya know, like the kind the Suicide Squad had no business fighting. I’ve got no interest in this, but that’s ’cause I don’t really like magic. If they manage to get Swamp Thing into the movie, though, I think it’ll increase its appeal. Right now, though, they’re just a bunch of magical nobodies coasting on the Justice League name which might not even hold any power if that movie fails this Fall.
In sadder news, Zack Snyder bowed out of Justice League post-production work to spend time with his family as they grieve the loss of his daughter, Autumn, to suicide. It was revealed that Joss Whedon was brought in to finish the film, which now has fans cautiously optimistic. Just last week, there were reports that there had been so many reshoots that the film was basically a different movie from what was originally shot. It’s possible, however, that these reshoots were part of Whedon’s plan. It’s really unfortunate what the Snyder family is going through, and it’s deplorable that some folks are making jokes about the situation.
In other movie news, it was revealed that Tom Cruise’s upcoming film, The Mummy, will kick off a Universal Monsters cinematic universe called Dark Universe. I bet they stayed up real late to think of that one! Anyway, Russell Crowe will portray Dr. Jekyll (who also appears in The Mummy), Javier Bardem will play Frankenstein’s monster, and Johnny Depp will play The Invisible Man. The next film in the franchise will be The Bride of Frankenstein, to be released on Valentine’s Day of 2019. Ya know what’s funny? DC’s Justice League Dark film was also going to be called Dark Universe. Somebody’s gonna have to lawyer up!
In TV news, it was reported that Hamilton scribe and star, Lin-Manuel Miranda, will voice Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera AKA Gizmoduck in the upcoming DuckTales reboot. Cabrera? Really? He’s even brown now to go along with the name change. I know some folks are gonna have an issue with this. Hell, I even kinda have an issue with it. But if they’re gonna inject some diversity into Duckburg, I guess I’d rather them do this than, say, Launchpad McQuack-Jenkins.
While we knew that Bobby Moynihan was leaving Saturday Night Live, just hours before the season finale it was revealed that Vanessa Bayer would also be leaving. Then, Monday morning, it was reported that Sasheer Zamata would also be leaving the show. I’m really gonna miss Vanessa, as she definitely grew on me. Her characters have this adorable aloofness to them that I’ve come to enjoy. She’s got a big future playing the best friend in romantic comedies ahead of her. Sasheer was simply underutilized. She was always in the background of sketches, or only had a line or two. I hear that she really shined in the writers room, coming up with sketches like Black Jeopardy. I feel like SNL will merely be a footnote on her resume, as she goes on to bigger things, like Noël Wells and Jenny Slate.
Last week, I had the pleasure of joining some of my favorite people on the Nerd Lunch podcast, where discussed some of the greatest pop culture deaths. Nobody was safe, from Santa Claus to Michael Knight! And I finally got to join my pal Vincent (@RobotsPJs) on a podcast, which has been years in the making. We had a great time, and I think you’ll have a great time listening to it, so check it out!
Song of the Week
youtube
This week, I’ve got “It Ain’t My Fault”, by Brothers Osborne. Not only are they local boys, but I love the fact that this song/video has layers. Read the title and then watch the video. They’re trying to tell us something – the same kind of thing that sank the Dixie Chicks all those years ago. My how times have changed!

In the UK, there’s an annual event called Red Nose Day, where they’ve been raising money to end child poverty for nearly 30 years. Launched by the nonprofit Comic Relief, the event has since raised over $1 billion globally. The event came to the US in 2015, where you can buy a red nose at Walgreens for a dollar, with the proceeds going to the charity. One of the co-founders of Comic Relief happens to be Richard Curtis – writer and director of one of my favorite movies, Love Actually. Now, a lot of people hate the film because it gave way to Garry Marshall imitations like Valentine’s Day and New Years Eve. You know, those schlocky romantic comedies with an ensemble cast where all the storylines converge at some point. I don’t care, ’cause I happened to like those movies, too, but I especially like Love Actually.
Well, to celebrate this year’s Red Nose Day, Curtis reunited most of the cast of Love Actually to give us a 15-minute sequel to the film, called Red Nose Day Actually. We get to catch up on the characters 13 years later, and I have to say that I was smiling the entire time. It was great seeing those characters again, from Bill Nighy’s Billy Mack to Hugh Grant’s Prime Minister. I could’ve done without Rowan Atkinson’s meticulous shopkeeper, but it was even sorta nice seeing him again, too. You feel old as shit, though, when you see little Sam, who’s now 26 years old. I think his segment made me the happiest of all. Or maybe it was seeing Jamie and Aurelia and their kids. Or maybe it was seeing Martine McCutcheon again (why doesn’t she get more work stateside?!). I don’t know. I loved the whole damn thing.
The special originally aired in the UK in March for their Red Nose Day, but they’ve gone to great pains to keep it off the internet. Yesterday was the US’s Red Nose Day, and a new version of the short aired last night on NBC. Ya know, they should really have everyone celebrate on the same day worldwide, but what do I know? Anyway, I actually missed the NBC version because of things, but I was intrepid enough to find the UK version online. This morning, however, NBC posted it on their website so I was able to compare and contrast. The only real difference is that the UK version cut out the Laura Linney update, with Patrick Dempsey as her husband. It was a nice aside, but I guess British audiences don’t know who Dempsey is, so they didn’t miss out on much. Anyway, I wish more movies would give us short reunion updates, maybe on anniversary edition Blu Rays or something. It was nice to get just a taste of what everyone’s been up to, without them being burdened by a full film that would be more than likely fall short of the original. If you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go watch this thing a few more times, but it’s safe to say that Red Nose Day Actually had the West Week Ever.
