I've read a lot of fanfiction where the Aizawamic's adopt Midoriya and...

Izuku had no idea how much hair humans actually loses. He always cut his hair short because it was more convenient for him.

And so, the first time he helped them clean the bathroom, he was shocked to see so much hair in the drain. How?! From where?! He was seriously scared and did his best to slip all kinds of food with hair vitamins into his foster parents.

In the end, Aizawa and Yamada saw through the trick and calmed him down (deeply touched and laughing at this)

I want to say the guy on the left is a young Mic, but who’s the guy on the right? Could it be that there were originally two loud and bright people next to out gloomy and sleepy Aizawa and they lost one? Or?

Or something you would have done differently?this is gonna sound super weird and… unrealistic… but, i think the biggest flaw is the fact that it’s a shounen? this series has so much potential to be “more” than it is, but it never will be - everything has to be tailored to the demographic. we have to deal with corny/poor taste humor, overly sexualized characters, lesser importance of female characters, and weakly written dramatic situations… i don’t know, i feel like if everything was “aged up”, it would be more progressive and respectable of a manga/show. thank you ez! the way!!! the girls!!! are treated!!! i cannot stand momo’s costume. i cannot stand the fact that magically every girls’ boob size magically increases when they have something tight on. their storylines are also…. kinda….. glazed over??? like i get it, with that amount of characters it’s hard to have everyone’s story included, and to have it done with the right pacing etc, etc, but why does it feel like /every/ girl is treated that way???? to just, put the needed thing out there and get it over with as fast as possible????

Ships visualizations on  AO3 (BNHA): What is the main ship vs side ship?

This is a sequel to the BNHA ao3 ships data visualization post that you can find here.

To recap very briefly: Bakudeku was the most popular ship. Bakudeku was also the most popular m/m ship but half the m/m fics in the top10 ships were actually divided in Bakudeku, Kiribaku and Tododeku. Kacchako was the most popular m/f ship when excluding secondary ships, otherwise Izuocha was. In this case, when only considering Izuocha and Kacchako alone (with no extra tags), Kacchako had double the fics than Izuocha. Momojirou alone got half of the fics in the top 10 f/f ships.

I was mostly interested in understanding what was going on with some of the ships. For example, Izuocha is more popular on ao3 than Kacchako only when sideships are not excluded, so I was wondering if it could be that some ships' numbers are mainly from them being used in side ships.

For example, it could be that Izuocha is a common side ship in ships focused on Kiribaku, while Kacchako is less popular as a side ship because the top two m/m ships all involve Bakugou.

METHOD

To check on this, I took a sample of fics for each main ships.

I checked 300 fics, taking the five most recent pages on ao3, five random pages, and the oldest five pages on ao3 (every page has 20 fics, so 20*15= 200 fics). The five random pages were chosen within the first most recent 100 pages. I calculated how many of these fics had the pairing as the main one, and how many had it as a side one.

Ex. I considered a fic tagged Momo/Jirou first and Izuocha second, a side ship for Izuocha and a main ship for MomoJirou. In case of crossovers, I considered the first bnha ship in the tags.

This was done the 8 April 2021.

ASSUMPTION

I assumed that the main focus of the fanfic would be the first pairing in the pairings tags. I also assumed that collection of one shots were a very small minority, and to double check, I calculated how many collections and one shots were present in the first 5 pages (see here for the results). They were about 9 to 4 fanfics in 100.

I repeated this counting for the main ships: BakuDeku, TodoDeku, KiriBaku, Izuocha, Kacchako, Todomomo. 

BAKUDEKU

In 300 fanfics tagged BakuDeku, 244 had BakuDeku or Baku & Deku as the first tag, thus focusing on the ship. In 56 fanfics, other pairings (33 in total) were the focus.

Here are the main 10 pairings used as focus in fanfics tagged BakuDeku.

As you can see, BakuDeku was the focus of its own tag in 81.33% of the times. It was followed by Tododeku at ~3%, while other ships were equal or under 1%. 

KIRIBAKU

Kiribaku tagged fics had Kiribaku or Kiri & Baku in the first tag 201 times (over 300). This means that 99 fics tagged Kiribaku had another ship focus (there were 36 other ships/relationships tags).

As you can see, 67% of KiriBaku tagged fics were about Kiribaku. Todobaku and Bakudeku had about ~6% each, which was surprising as both these ships have Bakugou in it. The other main fics were ShinKami, Izuocha, AizawaMic, KamiJirou, non romantic ships and Bakugou/Reader.

TODODEKU

Of the 300 fics tagged Tododeku, 192 had Tododeku as the main focus. There were some big difference between the first fics published and the new one, so check the last part of this post (called EXTRA) for more about this.

For now, here is the summary of what ships were the protagonist in the tag Tododeku:

Click here for the bigger version Tododeku was the focus in 64% of cases. This is definitely the lowest number among the mm ships. Among the Tododeku tagged fics, Bakudeku (10%) and Kiribaku (~6%) were the other main ships. Interestingly, Todobakudeku had a relatively high presence.

IZUOCHA

Of 300 Izuocha tagged fics, only 138 were actually focusing on Izuocha. Interestingly enough, all the other fics were distributed among 64 other ships, which is higher than any other case considered in this post.

46% of Izuocha tagged fics were actually about Izuocha. There was not another ship that was very prominent, but actually there were a lot of ships (64) each with 1 or more works. Izuocha seems then a very common side ship to use.

KACCHAKO

Of 300 Kacchako tagged fics, 229 fics were actually focused on Kacchako only, which is pretty high. The remaining fics were shared with 35 other ships.

Kacchako has the 76.33% of fics focusing on the actual Kacchako ship, which is higher than any other ship considered a part from Bakudeku. 

TODOMOMO

Among the 300 Todomomo tagged fics, 190 are focusing on Todomomo. The remaining fics are divided between 39 ships/relationships.

From the graph, we can see that 63% of fics are Todomomo centered. The main pairings who grabbed the fics was Izuocha, which was the focus in 9% of cases.

Stay tuned for part three, where I check if among the tagged tags (with the same data) the main side tags involve the characters or not. For example, in fics tagged Izuocha, when Izuocha ends up being a sideship, are the main ships involving Deku or Uraraka, or completely different characters?
