Excursion to the Desert: Day 1
Tuesday morning we wake for our last breakfast at the Villas and load the cars for a 3 day excursion with Desert Majesty.  We are 10 women in 2 cars - 6 of us from the art retreat in one car and Coco (our travel agent) and her friends in the other car.  As we depart, our driver Abdullah, tells us we have about 6 hours of driving and lots of stops today.  I could not believe the traffic - all tour vans as we depart Marrakesh.
First stop before lunch: Telouet Kasbhah, a historic site in small village.  At this point, we had already driven a lot of “zig zags” (hairpin turns) of the Atlas Mountains and had to make several stops for those who were car sick.  Since I don’t get car sick, I was in the way back of the van, but that didn’t prevent the anxiety of the mountain roads and tailgating culture!  After we wandered the historic site, we had lunch at a small rooftop cafe.  The landscape was just amazing and the drive took us through so many villages. After lunch we made another stop at a UNESCO World Heritage site, Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou.  This site still has families living in it, but also felt like a tour attraction at the same time. It has been a popular site for filming like The Gladiator and Game of Thrones and the nearby city had large movie studios and movie themed art and sculptures.  We wandered this site for quite some time and a few of us climbed to the very top for amazing views (and interesting to see solar panels on the ancient structures). We continue driving to the Valley of the Roses with a quick ATM stop, but it’s dark before we arrive.  Our driver called ahead and asked a shop keeper to stay open for a shopping/bathroom break, so we all bought some handmade beauty products.
Let me pause here and tell you about our bathroom stops...our first stop was a tourist stop with at least 20 vans pulled up out front.  The restrooms are sometimes coed, but with men’s/women’s stalls once you get inside.  And we had to often pay an attendant coins to enter and/or get toilet paper, so we quickly started carrying our own kleenex, hand sanitizer and took turns paying for each other depending on who had coins!  As we progressed into the mountains, sometimes our bathroom stops were just “squat toilets” in the back of shops were you asked for coins and then to shop on your way out.
We finally get to Chez Ichou, our lovely guesthouse for the evening after 9 pm. After we all freshen up, we gather for dinner in a cozy dining room with a warm fireplace blazing. No matter how late, we always have a formal meal.  I actually laid my head on the table at one point and another friend says she will leave dinner at 10:30 no matter what course we are on!  I don’t leave dinner until 11:15 and got a great night sleep with the heater on and big cozy duvet.

Ouarzazate & Ait Ben Haddou: A Day Trip That’ll Blow Your Mind
Hey there, travel enthusiasts! Today, I’m taking you on a virtual journey to two of Morocco’s most captivating destinations: Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou. Get ready to immerse yourselves in breathtaking desert landscapes, ancient kasbahs, and a touch of Hollywood glitz. Let’s hit the road!
Gateway to the Sahara: Ouarzazate Awaits
Our adventure kicked off with an early morning drive from Marrakech, winding through the majestic High Atlas Mountains. The scenery was ever-changing, with lush valleys gradually giving way to rugged, sun-baked terrain. After a scenic journey, we arrived in Ouarzazate, affectionately known as the “Door of the Desert.” The town itself is a delightful blend of traditional Moroccan architecture and modern conveniences, making it a perfect starting point for our desert escapade.
Movie Magic in Ouarzazate: Lights, Camera, Action!
Ouarzazate’s claim to fame lies in its role as a major filming location for Hollywood blockbusters. The town’s vast desert landscapes and iconic kasbahs have set the stage for epic movies like “Gladiator,” “Lawrence of Arabia,” and even “Game of Thrones.” I couldn’t resist visiting the Atlas Film Studios, where I wandered through the sets, feeling like I’d stepped into my favorite movies. If you’re a film enthusiast, this place is an absolute must-visit!
Ait Ben Haddou: A Journey Through Time
Next up was the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou, an ancient fortified village that will transport you back in time. This architectural marvel, known as a ksar, is a testament to the ingenuity of earthen construction. The towering mudbrick structures, connected by narrow alleyways, create a labyrinthine atmosphere that’s both enchanting and mysterious.
As we explored the village, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe. The intricate details of the buildings, the panoramic views from the hilltop, and the palpable history in the air made it an unforgettable experience. Ait Ben Haddou’s timeless beauty has understandably graced countless films and TV shows, and it’s easy to see why.
Insider Tips for Your Ouarzazate Adventure
Planning a trip to Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou? Here are a few insider tips to make the most of your day:
Rise and shine! The drive from Marrakech takes a few hours, so an early start is key to maximizing your time.
Comfortable shoes are your best friend. You’ll be doing plenty of walking, so make sure your feet are happy.
Stay hydrated. The desert sun can be intense, so bring plenty of water and stay refreshed.
Respect the local culture. Ait Ben Haddou is a living village, so be mindful of the locals and their customs.
Take your time. Don’t rush through these incredible places. Allow yourself to soak up the atmosphere and appreciate their unique beauty.
Until Next Time, Adventurers!
My day trip to Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou was a true highlight of my Moroccan travels. The combination of stunning scenery, historical wonders, and a dash of Hollywood magic made it an experience I’ll cherish forever. If you’re seeking an adventure-filled day trip from Marrakech, I wholeheartedly recommend exploring these remarkable destinations.
So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your own Ouarzazate adventure today! Remember, the best way to travel is to embrace the unknown, immerse yourself in the local culture, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Safe travels, and until next time!
P.S. If you have any questions or need more tips, feel free to drop a comment below. I’m always happy to help fellow explorers!

So! For this fic meme, @alphaflyer picked 500 words from Just Like The Setting Sun, a Clint/Nat fic written wayyyyy back in 2014, basically asking the question ‘does it hold up?’ (She also discovered that asks word limits are way lower than 500 words, so sent this via the messenger. Feel free to do the same). So brace yourself for some DVD Extras bullshittery. :P
But their love isn’t doomed. Their love will end in freedom, one way or another.
They collect scars as easily as smiles. A large cat takes a chunk of her leg, and he loses a finger to a man with skin so dark it shines.
She is the only woman left. She is no longer a novelty, but she is still alive.
Time passes. Not much time, not really, but it feels like more. They are by no means favourites, but they are permitted to fight on. If they wanted, they could earn their freedom. But it is not the manner of freedom he desires, and the freedom they offer her is no freedom at all.
He calls her rauðr, pointing at the blood on his fingers, the grapes on his plate, the flowers on the courtyard tree. Her hair.
Red. Like blood.
She calls him ястреб because his eyes see so clearly and his nails score lines down her back like talons.
Hawk. But wing-clipped, unable to fly.
Eventually they get sent into the arena together. Here is the culmination of their ‘doomed love’. Here they are to be laughed at; see how futile their efforts, how pointless their affection. See how the emperor’s judgement finds them at last.
There are archers ringing the stands. They will not escape.
They kill the animals, then the convicts that follow. Then the gladiators with axes and swords. They stand in blood and gore and when there is no one left to fight, they turn to each other.
When we leave, she says, will we go east or west?
I follow the sun.
The sun moves.
My sun in always in front of me, he says. Blood red. Setting.
They do not raise arms against each other and she does not feel the arrow that kills her. She only feels his lips.
They go down like the setting sun. Hot, blood red and free.
Okay, so fun fact about this story. I thought up the entire thing while on a walk. I remember the walk was very hot, and very green, and that there were some enormous rhubarb-like plants at one point. I hardly talked to anyone for the entire thing, and this story unspooled itself in my head for the duration. On every long walk I’ve been on since, I’ve waited for such inspiration to strike again. Needless to say, it hasn’t.
I’m also fairly sure I’d watched Gladiator for the first time pretty close to the writing of this fic. I was actually filling a prompt I’d left on a @be-compromised Promptathon, so it seems like a fair bet. I was super obsessed with the credit song Now We Are Free for a long time after seeing it for the first time too, and it seems safe to guess that also had an impact.
Anyway. I’m actually really proud of this story still. In my head it’s part of a trilogy (sort of the same way the Cornetto Trilogy is a trilogy, rather than, say, The Lord of the Rings) with This Bitter Earth and the shorter story. The Orange Trilogy I’d probably call it, because all the stories are very orange. Little Beast would probably be a sort of coda to that trilogy, actually.
So yes, I feel it does hold up. I think what I was going for was the notion of choice, and how choosing always gives you a modicum of power, even if all you’re choosing is the manner of your death. There’s a defiance in that.
I mean, now I look at it, the influence of Gladiator is really fucking obvious. Not in  bad way, necessarily, but the arena I’m picturing right now is definitely the one I remember from Gladiator. And I suppose the fact that I’ve recently been to Ait Ben Haddou, there they filmed a lot of Gladiator is just making the connection all the stronger for me.

10 Best Hiking Trails in Morocco
Atlas Mountains range: Are you planning a trip to the Maghreb? So don't miss out on discovering the Atlas Mountains!
A mountain range in North Africa, the Atlas spans three countries in the region: Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. 2,500 kilometers long, the massif forms a barrier between the Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara. Its Moroccan part is probably the most interesting. It is shared between three massifs: the Anti, the Middle and the High Atlas. The latter attracts most of the visitors. Many come to climb Mount Toubkal, its highest peak, which rises to 4,167 meters.
The Atlas Mountains are among the must-see places to visit in this region. No matter what country you are going to, be sure to visit it. Magnificent landscapes, canyons, oases and rivers await you. So to help you on your adventures, in this guide we will cover all the ways to discover the Atlas Mountains.
Tumblr media
Where is Mount Toubkal?
One of the most beautiful mountains of the High Atlas Mountains chain, which passes in the countries of the Maghreb, as Mount Toubkal or Mount Toubkal is the highest mountain peak in the Atlas Mountains chain, which has a height of 4165 meters and is 60 km south of Marrakesh. It has two types of slopes, The first is the high slopes to which most people tend to practice climbing, which are covered with snow in the winter season, so people practice skiing, and the second is the low or lower slopes, which individuals go to for recreation and enjoying the scenery, you will need two full days to reach the top of a mountain Toubkal and the landing thereof. On the first day, you will leave from the village of Imlil in the morning and walk for about five hours to the shelter, where you will spend the night. Then on the second day you will go to the summit in a period of four to five hours, then head down to the shelter, then return to Imlil, the best period to climb Mount Toubkal is late April to October and great care must be taken when climbing the mountain.

The Road to Ait Ben-Haddou
When I was looking through the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Morocco, one of them stood out for me - Ait Ben-Haddou. I thought that I can miss everything else as long as I get to go to this place. The photos of Ait Ben-Haddou look very impressive and it is probably what I was looking for when I visited Morocco. I joined a tour group from Marrakesh and they brought us to Ait Ben-Haddou on a bus. The journey was around three to four hours which is not a trivial amount of time. The roads weren't very good and in fact, a lot of parts were under construction. It is surprising to see that since this is a very well traveled road. If you are unlucky, you might get stuck on the road for hours if there happens to be a landslide. The road traverses the High Atlas mountains and, along the way, visitors can see scenic mountain views.

The next place we will visit is the town of Ifrane, located in the north-western slope of the Middle Atlas at 1630 meters above water level. Its wide avenues, its perfectly clean urban development, the gardens, the green spaces, and its architecture make this city a Swiss city. Ifrane feels badly placed in Morocco. That's why it's called Moroccan Switzerland, and if that's not enough, it has a major ski resort, Michlifen. Around 6 p.m., we arrive in Fez. The driver will drop you off at your hotel / riad or any other preferable location and that's the end of  of our 3 Days Tour from Marrakech to Fes .

Dec. 10th, 2017 - Morocco Day 4
Our last (full) day in Morocco we headed out of the city one more time to Ouarzazate and later on to Ait-Ben-Haddou. It was about a 4 hour drive there with a good part of the trip involving winding our way through and over some mountains in the region. Said, our driver, took the first pic with us. He was great and knew the area and roads very well.
Our first stop, Ouarzazate, is where lots of movies (think Star Wars, Gladiator, Prince of Persia, etc.) were filmed. It’s not surprising that some of the original Star Wars “other planet” scenes were shot near here since the surrounding areas look a bit like mars. The colors of the earth here are incredible: reds, yellows, pinks, oranges, browns. It’s like the land itself was dipped in a muted sunset.
Anyway, we toured one of the sets there where movies like Black Hawk Down were filmed, and actually saw a film currently being filmed off in the distance called Swords and Sceptres. I’ll have to be on the watch for that one to come out next year. A lot of films set in the Middle East or Egypt are actually filmed in Morocco since it’s 1. safer and 2. you can’t deface or blow up the actual pyramids and stuff. So yeah.
After that, we visited a Kasbah. Tbh, I had no idea what a Kasbah was except for the song (Rock the Casbah). Basically, it’s an old, huge house/mansion that has an inner courtyard and 4 towers along the walls. The architecture was impressively intricate for being adobe (mud and straw) with embellishments in the molding and such and a warren-like maze of rooms within.
Next up was Ait-Ben-Haddou. This is a world heritage site and where part of season 3 of Game of Thrones was set, as well as the main arena from Gladiator. It was really cool to see and there was a nice view of the village below from the top. Interestingly enough, the stream you see running nearby isn’t freshwater since the minerals upstream get dissolved into it making it brackish.
Overall, this was an amazing trip with a fantastic family. It was a completely different experience which, while I relished in it, I’m not sure I would feel super comfortable traveling solo here.

From legend and lore, dramatic history and jaw-dropping architecture, these remarkable castles and citadels are spectacular destinations on our adventures. Join us to experience these regal ancient landmarks—and get a taste of royal life as we stay in an atmospheric château and a former palace of a maharaja.
Japan
On our adventure, Japan: Castles, Samurais, and Legends, we visit Okayama Castle, known as the “Castle of the Crow” because of its black exterior, as well as Himeji Castle, known as the “White Egret Castle” for its resemblance to a bird taking flight. Both are spectacular displays of Japanese castle architecture. Himeji Castle, the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Japan, is a network of 83 buildings built in the mid-14th century that have never been damaged by war, earthquake, or fire.

Czech Republic
Imposing turrets, dramatic castle walls, and a history steeped in legend—the Czech Republic is what fairytales are made of. On our journey, From Bratislava to Prague, we explore the 13th century Cesky Krumlov Castle, set picturesquely in a river’s bend, with incredible Gothic, Renaissance, and baroque features. In northern Prague, another fairytale complex emerges: The Prague Castle. One of the largest castle complexes in the world and spread over 18 acres, the Prague Castle is comprised of spectacular courtyards, gardens, and historic buildings and has been the official residence of the Head of State since the 9th century.

India
What was once the former home of the Maharaja of Jaipur is now a lovely hotel that we get to call home while on our Royal Rajasthan cultural tour. Built in 1835, the palace offers a grand entrance—by horse-drawn carriage—and each of its 78 guest rooms are all fit for royalty. You’re likely to see peacocks roam the gardens during sunrise and sunset and the atmospheric hotel bar is a wonderful place to enjoy a nightcap.

France
The medieval citadel, La Cité, of Carcassone, is absolutely extraordinary. Its massive walls—nearly two miles around—encircle more than 52 towers, a wonderfully preserved Gothic church, and marvelous historic buildings. On our Hiking in the Land of the Cathars adventure, we explore this site by day, and later retreat to our hotel set inside the city walls, right next to the Grand Basilica.
View Hiking in the Land of the Cathars Itinerary
Spend a night like royalty at the exquisite Château de la Treyne, one of the highlights of our journey, Prehistoric Caves and Great Cuisine of Southern France. This 14th century château has a magical setting overlooking the Dordogne River and is surrounded by a formal French garden lined with century-old cedars and nearly 300 acres of private forest. With 17 uniquely designed rooms, the château offers an authentic glimpse into what life was like in a French palace.

Romania
Built in the 19th century, this Romanian castle, Pele’s Castle, was by far the most modern of its time. In fact, it was the first European castle entirely lit by the use of electricity. The castle was the summer residence of the royal family and boasts 160 rooms. Its gardens are equally marvelous, and we explore them on our Bulgaria to Transylvania adventure.

Peru
With its zigzagging terraces and ceremonial buildings laid out in alignment with the movement of the sun, Choquequirao is the more mysterious (and far less-traveled) sister to Machu Picchu. Discoveries are still being made at this intriguing site, and we’ll camp right inside the walls on our expedition, Choquequirao: Trek to the Cradle of Gold. In the stillness and remoteness here, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, we will sense the majesty of the Inca Empire. One of our trip leaders has been a part of its excavations and will help unlock its wonders.

Morocco
Beyond the bustling souks of Marrakesh and Fez stands the fortified village, or “ksar” of Ait Ben Haddou. This majestic UNESCO World Heritage Site has been the backdrop for many films, including Lawrence of Arabia. Our journey in Morocco takes us hiking up through the labyrinth of alleyways for breathtaking views of the dramatic Atlas Mountains and lush groves of palm trees.
View Morocco: Camels to Casbahs Itinerary
Scotland
During our explorations of Scotland’s Orkney Islands and Stunning North Coast, we visit Dunrobin Castle, a fairytale castle that is one of Britain’s oldest continuously inhabited houses—the Earl of the Clan Sutherland still retains private quarters here—and we’ll also be welcomed at Castle Leod, seat of Clan Mackenzie and home of their Chief, the Earl of Cromartie. We’ll have a visit with the Earl, learning about the tumultuous era of the Jacobite rebellion and infamous Highland Clearances, with a first-hand introduction to his 500-year-old family home.
View Scotland’s Orkney Islands and Stunning North Coast Itinerary
On our adventure to the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, we visit Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most recognizable sights in Scotland. Set on a tidal inlet where three lochs meet, it is connected by a footbridge to the mainland. Founded in the 13th century and a stronghold of the Clan Mackenzie, the castle also played a role in the Jacobite risings of the 17th and 18th centuries, ultimately leaving the huge stone structure in ruins. Lt. Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and dedicated the next 20 years to its reconstruction.
View Highlands and Islands of Scotland Itinerary
Wales
Caernarfon Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Edward I’s four castles built to control north Wales, collectively known as “The Iron Ring.” Perched on an estuary at the entrance to the Menai Strait, the well-preserved 13th century Caernarfon is undoubtedly the most impressive of the four, its massive stone structure a strong symbol of Edward’s military might. On our Adventure in Wales, we explore the impressive fortress that still plays an important part in British Royal life. It was here in 1969, with much pomp and ceremony, that young Prince Charles knelt before his mother, the Queen, to be invested as The Prince of Wales.
