18 JANUARY 1991 – FIRST USE OF THE PATRIOT MISSILE IN COMBAT In 1970 the U.S. Army began development of a long-range, all-altitude, all-weather air defense system to counter tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and advanced high-performance aircraft. The state-of-the-art system developed over the following years had a range of 70 km and a maximum altitude of over 24 km; after successful tests, it was dubbed the Mobile Interceptor Missile (MIM)-104 Patriot, and replaced existing defense missile systems in the 1980’s. The Patriot assumed the role of the Army's anti-ballistic missile system, which has become its primary mission. Batteries deployed during the Persian Gulf War scored the Patriot’s first wartime intercept on 18 Jan. 1991, when Iraq launched a Scud missile at Saudi Arabia. The enemy Scud was brought down by two Patriot missiles fired by BTRY A, 2d BTLN, 7th Air Defense ARTY, 11th BDE. In all, Patriots brought down at least 11 enemy Scuds in the theater. Other Patriot batteries deployed to Israel, intercepting numerous inbound missiles. #Armyhistory #USArmy #TRADOC #DesertStorm #Patriot #PatriotMissile #GulfWar #MilitaryHistory #AirDefenseArtillery #ADA Posted @withregram • @armyhistory (at Middle Tennessee Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnkOMyduz93/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
