Match Review: Manchester United Women 1-1 Leicester City Women
A scrappy win against the Villa, a scrappy draw against Arsenal, and now a frustrating draw against Leicester. It's a steady start to the season for United's women, but one that will need more quality on display mid-week if United are to progress past PSG and qualify for the Champions League.
In what was a disappointing draw at home to Leicester, the crowd watched on in the sunshine at Leigh Sports Village at United hosted the Foxes on Sunday.
The game was quickly marred by an injury to new signing and returning fan Gabby George, who might now be ruled out for the season with an ACL injury. We wish her a speedy recovery, and will talk about the spate of ACL problems in women's football in a future article.
United were unlucky early on not to take the lead through Lucia Garcia, and Hinata Miyazawa's energy was clear for all to see in the CAM position. That pace from Nikita Parris, Garcia, and Miyazawa saw United play the long ball counter attack game in the first half and it showed promise, with Hinata even hitting the bar. No breakthrough alas.
Second half saw both teams come out with new tactical impetus but Leicester struck first; a decent free kick whipped into the box, a narrowly missed header from Millie Turner, and number 10 Aileen Whelan unmarked at back post to smash it in the net past Mary Earps. Skinner will have been disappointed to see such sloppy defending.
United responded quickly though, with captain Katie Zelem's neat corner meeting the head of CB Maya Le Tissier and dart into the far corner of the net. From here, United found their rhythm again but to no avail. Even with Toone, Galton, Williams and Evans all thrown into the fray, United just couldn't break down Leicester.
For now, United are 6th in the WSL and undefeated. Leicester are 2nd, also undefeated, but as the first team to take any points off them, and with a rotated side ahead of the PSG second leg, AND with injury to starting LB Gabby George... a draw isn't the worst thing. The problem is that when you discuss title form and how champions play, they win these games. They find a way to sneak these results...
Still, that's done. Now to focus on Wednesday. We love an upset in Paris. Lets make it happen again. UTFR.

Matchday! United Women welcome Leicester City to Leigh Sports Village for the Conti Cup.
It'll be our third outing in this season's edition, following the wins over Everton and Liverpool.
United currently sit second in Group B behind Manchester City, who will not play this week due to the uneven number of teams, giving the Reds an opportunity to end the calendar year on top.
We’ve already met Leicester once this season, in a WSL game that was also contested in front of the Leigh Sports Village faithful. An even affair ultimately ended in the points being shared, with Aileen Whelan giving the visitors the lead on the hour mark before Maya Le Tissier’s effort levelled things up seven minutes later.
Let's get another W. Come on United!

How many couples in the FAWSL play on the same team and which ones don’t??
OK, so here are the ones I know of, there are probably more.
Couples on the same team:
Arsenal = Miedema & Evans, Nobbs & Williamson, Van de Donk & Mead, Walti & Kemme
Chelsea = Mjelde & Kirby (?)
Reading = Potter & Moore
Brighton = Fern Whelan & Aileen Whelan - engaged, have the same surname but not related! At least neither of them will have to change their name when they get married!
Couples not on the same team:
Arthur (Birmingham) & Beattie (Man City) - both on Scottish NT
Bachmann (Chelsea) & Lehmann (West Ham) - both on Swiss NT
Angharad James (Everton) & Amy Turner (Man Utd)
Couples in different leagues:
Eriksson (Chelsea) & Harder (Wolfsburg - Frauen-Bundesliga)
Walsh (Man City) & Bronze (Lyon - D1) - both on English NT
McCabe (Arsenal) & Littlejohn (London Bees - FAWC)

Match Review: Manchester United Women 3-1 Leicester City Women
3 wins in 3 from the United ladies in the Conti Cup, and the Reds keep marching on.
It's never an easy tie against Leicester City, but United kept up their hot streak of form to make it a comfortable win in the end.
First half goals from Lucia Garcia and Lisa Naalsund had United comfortable, but a dangerous pass from keeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce out to captain Katie Zelem saw the England international pressed into a bad touch and robbed of the ball by Aileen Whelan, whose lobbed finish got the Foxes back in the game.
United focused up in the second half and Brazilian wonder Geyse was brought down in the box after some darting wide play into the box, with captain Zelem atoning for the earlier mistake by coolly finishing the subsequent penalty.
Zelem could have had two, with another penalty later on in the half, but the crossbar and goalie Leitzig stopped her effort and the rebound from Melvine Malard.
United's final game is away to Manchester City Women at the Joie Stadium on Wednesday 24th January. Top spot will guarantee the girls a bye to the Quarter Finals with the other group winners and seeded Chelsea (due to their Champions League involvement) and then the final two spots will be given to the best group runners-up.
But who will be in the QFs?
In Group A, Aston Villa are all but confirmed, and Sunderland are a decent second place. Durham are in third place tied on points with Sunderland but lack goal difference. They need Villa to absolutely snot the Black Cats to sneak into 2nd and even then, that'll probably be too weak to qualify vs the other groups. Alternatively, Sunderland could cause an upset and win and steal top spot, leaving Villa a strong candidate for the second place route in.
Group B is our lot. United just need a draw to stay top and guarantee our place. City need a win for top. City only need a draw to bag second though, whilst Leicester need to beat Everton and United to beat City. City's points are also good enough that second probably gets them into the quarters.
To keep things interesting Group C is wide open, with Palace vs London City and Watford vs Lewes both able to see any of the sides progress.
Group D is led by Arsenal, with a final game against Reading that should be a formality. Spurs though, they take on Southampton - both of whom are vying for first and second spots...
The final group, Group E, is topped by Brighton and Hove Albion. Charlton are second, and the pair face off to finish, while West Ham have an easier game (on paper) against last place Birmingham City - though maybe they fight for pride and cause an upset...
All we do know is that it will be an exciting January for women's football fans!

'Getting maternity rights in players' contracts is important'
‘Getting maternity rights in players’ contracts is important’
Brighton are flying high in the WSL – and Albion attacker Aileen Whelan certainly feels on top of the world at the moment.

Brightton have released a bunch of players twitter,com/Kyle_thornton23/status/1268216057627586562
yeah 7 (well 6 and one on loan) is quite the amount to lose, there’s definitely going to be a big move around of players this year. Le Garrac seems to be the only one that’s decided to leave so I’m very surprised that Powell decided to release so many players. I’m also surprised that she released Fern Whelan but not Aileen Whelan so I’m not sure how that’s going to work out

Defender Matilde Lundorf is to leave Albion after her contract expired.
The 21-year-old Danish international joined the club in 2019 and made nine WSL appearances last season.
Head coach Hope Powell said, “Matilde was an important member of the squad last season and we made her an offer to stay but she has decided to further her career elsewhere.
“It’s a shame and we’ll miss Matilde. She brought a lot to the club on and off the field and we wish her all the best for the future.”
Meanwhile, the following players have accepted new contracts for next season: Dani Bowman, Kirsty Barton, Jodie Brett, Emily Simpkins, Laura Rafferty, Victoria Williams, Ellie Brazil, Rianna Jarrett, Fliss Gibbons, Danique Kerkdijk, Aileen Whelan, Beth Roe, Megan Connolly, Kayleigh Green.
