that may or may not be an essay but since its structure is completely off, I opted to call it a rant.

Note: this is a long overdue post that was made prior to the release of the album, I have not changed anything within this because dammit my past self worked her ass off on this and just left it on the backburner for so long.

Before the next batch of Quartet Night Solo Songs get released this year (oh my god its been 3-4 years since the last ones) I wanted to write down the charm of Ai's songs and I hope the trend somewhat continues.

Now why does the second part matter? Well to me, if you put them together. Arrange by release date and track number, it almost sounds like a story on its own.

A person who has lost a loved one and forgot what the feeling felt like (Winter Blossom) until they discovered someone who could possibly mend their broken heart and understand the concept of "Ai" (A. I).

After finding this someone, they want to better themselves, become more reliable, someone who could be deserving of that love (Futari no Monogram). That love is returned to them and it feels a bit too much, but they're grateful that this person continues to stay by their side, despite being "broken" (Innocent Wind).

Like any relationship though, it was not just meant to be a sunshine filled story, they got into fights and arguements but that never deterred them from loving each other. Even during the moments they felt down or when he was scared of the passage of time, still uncertain about love, they still stuck with each other through thick and thin. And to understand these overflowing emotions, he wrote it into a song, a ballad, that sung the wishes of normal lovers and how with them, he can understand love. That he too, has that "something" on his chest (Mune no Kodou).

This emotional beat is followed by a happy and relaxing, definitely no underlying desires song about love (Synchronism).

being vague about the last one since I'll explain in each solo segment.

I think you guys get what I mean about the songs tying together to form a story by now right? Which is amazing to me, even if they most likely didn't do it on purpose, it gives a new meaning to listening to Ai's songs. Which make it even more fun to listen to.

So now onto each song and it's significance.

Winter Blossom

The first song by Ai is still as sad and beautiful as the first time I read the english translation~ I cried. This is a very straightforward song. They shared their last moments in winter.

and he wishes to God that he could feel the same emotions as her. She's about to go and he knows this, and he doesn't want to forget so he tries to stop his tears. He wants to remember this. Timeskip and he's all alone now with these memories. He doesn't think it's bad, no matter how sad it was, and yet he could only think about what else he could've done. He feels like he understands now, and he tells the words "I love you" even if she wasn't there, and his voice is only heard by the wind. He remembers the moment one last time, and makes a promise.

It's a tragedy that he only figured out what love is after she died. The song really moves me to tears. The hopeful message at the end is really nice and gives the listener a sense of encouragement.

A. I

Just lovers out on a vacation by the seaside. It starts off with him asking

“At what percentage does it become ‘love’?”

The night grows nearer, as you two get closer, and yet all he can feel is uncertainty. Unsure whether his feelings would reach or if he could ever truly express what he feels. Insecure about his own name, one he even called poor, you show him that there is a meaning to "AI". This fills him with happiness and he sees you as someone he can turn to, his warmth. He gives you a kiss. For now, in this moment, you will enjoy the time spent together, even if in the future you may fight. For now, even if he can't express to you all his feelings, the one word you taught him is enough. I love you.

I've always loved the play on words for A.I (artificial intelligence), Ai (love), and Ai (name) used for the song. See I don't understand Japanese writing much but I really wish I did. From what little I know it's amazing to see that Ai uses katakana アイ throughout the song. Katakana is used for loan words or when you want to emphasize something. So him using アイ instead of 愛 emphasizes that he REALLY doesn't understand "Ai". If you look through the wiki, there are like, 5 instances of the katakana being used. First is in the line highlighted above. Another is in "I want to confirm it, this thing you call ‘love’/tashikametai yo kimi no iu 'ai'" and the most important one. The last line of the song.

He actually learns what it means you guys. I'm proud of him. Another line that really got me in this song is when he keeps peppering you kisses because he was anxious. Baby, no, I won't leave you. I swear! Even if it takes time for you to understand, I won't let go!

into the spotlight of your heart

Rutile as an idol is a novel concept, but if there’s someone who can take on the job of spreading love and bringing a smile to everyone’s face, no one fits the criteria better than the gentle Southern wizard. He loves using his innocent charm combined with his genuine love for those around him to light up his career as an idol, and he quickly becomes a favorite amongst almost everyone both in and out of the idol industry.

Rutile prefers to perform soft, cuter songs, but he isn’t one to back down from a challenge! If prompted, he can easily digest darker and more intense concepts, and the smirks and sharp glances he sends at the camera and at fans always leave him trending on social media. He gets flustered if anyone brings it up later, but it makes him happy to know that so many people support the many sides of him that he shows as a performer.

There’s nothing he loves more than dropping hints about how much he loves you when people least expect it. He keeps your relationship a secret for your well-being, but he’s always talking about how much he “owes so much inspiration and love towards a special someone” in his life and winking at the camera where he’s sure that you’ll see him. Even when he’s writing lyrics, you can tell that he wrote every single romantic line with you in mind, and you can’t help but feel touched to know that he’s always thinking of your happiness.

Rutile always draws his cover album art by hand, and no matter how unconventional his style can be, he beams with pride whenever he sees his beautiful art and music being sold. If you have any suggestions as to what he should draw for his covers next, he’s all ears… even if his art might not exactly convey what you had in mind.

All in all, Rutile does his best to balance his idol life and make plenty of time for you. Whenever he’s abroad on tours, he makes sure to call you lots and send you presents, and whenever he’s working in his studio, he might invite you over for an impromptu cuddle session. You’re his soulmate and his muse, and Rutile treasures you more than words can describe. But you don’t mind: you can feel it in the way he looks at you, holds you, and kisses you.

Chloe’s a bundle of energy when it comes to his life as an idol, but he also takes it seriously. He knows that a lot of people look up to him, and while it may seem daunting to think that he bears the responsibility and good will of so many people, Chloe steps up to the occasion and vows to do his best to repay all the love he’s received so far.

Similar to Rutile, Chloe likes upbeat and happy songs. He’d love to try darker concepts, but he gets so awfully giggly at the thought that it takes him a while to actually get himself together to try it out. His flexibility and passion for his idol work really shines through though, and no matter whatever his management company throws at him, Chloe manages to stomach it all with a big grin and sparkling eyes.

Despite being such a beloved idol and a fierce performer, Chloe is still like a lovestruck puppy around you. He’s constantly asking to hold your hand or asking you for kisses, and even if his management scolds him to keep your relationship as subtle as possible, Chloe just loves you far too much to hold his affections back! He has faith that his fans will support him whether or not he has a significant other, so he’s more than willing to take the “gamble”.

He insists on preparing the clothes for the group, and he adores sharing his ideas with you. He seems to be able to find inspiration from anything: Rutile’s hair in the wind, Heathcliff’s smile towards his fans, your voice softly calling his name... He might even ask you to model for him, but you two both know that he’d still gush over you like you were on the cover of Vogue magazine no matter what you wore for him.

Chloe does his best to make his feelings clear to you, and he appreciates it if you’re transparent with him as well. It isn’t easy to be an idol and juggle a private life as well, so he wants to be able to understand your needs and match them perfectly. Relationships are a two-way road, and as long as he has your faith and your love, Chloe’s confident that you two can craft up a happy ending so perfect that it leaves even Disney fuming.

It’s amazing how Heathcliff ended up as an idol given that this boy has the worst stage fright in the world. He never fails to deliver an astounding performance whenever he does go up on stage, but his shyness never fails to fluster him up no matter what. You and the members of his group are right by his side, encouraging him to live in the moment and own up to whatever his heart tells him to do.

While he enjoys the bubbly concept and songs his group has, Heathcliff also thrives with slower and heartfelt songs. Ballads fit his buttery voice like heaven, and whenever he does lives late at night, his audience constantly begs him to sing them a lullaby to close the night. Of course, he always agrees, and his voice never fails to relax everyone listening.

Heathcliff prefers to take his relationship with you slowly, showing you his heart bit by bit rather than dishing out flashy declarations of love. His members always tease him to say something cool and romantic before concerts (something like “This song goes out to a special someone”), but he turns so red and starts stuttering like the world is ending that it often ends in a giggling fit from all three of them rather than a confession.

Heathcliff manages the group’s logistic side, so if you have any questions about anything, he’s your guy! He loves giving back to his group, especially after all the encouragement they give him, so he always puts in 100% to make sure everything is handled without any problems. Rutile and Chloe learn quickly that he tends to overwork himself though, and they often send you to “tempt” him into resting with the promise of cuddles.

Heathcliff is a sincere idol and an even more genuine lover, so he does all he can to make it clear to you that he loves you more than anything else in the world. He makes sure to tell you that he loves you whenever the two of you are together (even if it leaves him a blushing mess), and his heart swells with adoration whenever you tell him you love him back. Heathcliff can’t imagine a world without you, so he cherishes you so dearly that it would make anyone swoon from all the love in the air.

“You’re like a miracle that stepped into my life, my darling! ...Ack, was that a bit too much? I don’t know how Rutile and Chloe can say things like that so smoothly!”

We performed a lot of the 4th generation songs, it was a really fun time ^ ^ To everyone at the venue and everyone that watched the live stream, thank you for getting hyped up for us!

 We successfully concluded the regional midsummer national tour. I felt that we were really able to feel summer this year. It was ‘the best summer’ wasn’t it.

From this single on I’ll be able to participate as an Under member. For the last two and a half years the 4th generation members who weren’t selected for the ‘senbatsu’ were only able to participate in 4th generation single songs. I’m also very thankful that we were able to do a period song. Unfortunately, the time we spend with the senior members is extremely small. Since there have been a lot of members graduating recently, I want to quickly get closer to the senior members because I want to learn from them. Through the MV shoot I was able to feel the strength and kindness of the senior members.

As a member of the Unders I want to be able to contribute even more to Nogizaka46.

Through the postcards that are sent in from everyone it seems that we have good ratings… I’m grateful…!!!!!!

 ◎    On September 22nd the November issue of “Up To Boy” will be released. My solo gravure will be in that issue…! I remember saying about a year ago that I’d one day do a solo gravure. I’m so glad that my wish came true. Along with ‘EX Taishu’ it’s honestly thanks to all my fans that are working so hard to support me. Thank you!

hi! I'm kinda new to jpop but i kinda want to escape kpop and jpop seems to be just as exciting. i only know Faky well and i do know the names of the big girl groups in Japan but not many songs by them are familiar to me. Do you mind making me a short list of groups and songs for newbies and maybe a website where I can get the latest news or something? Thank you!

anyway, coming straight to the point...

as you can see i absolutely LOVE Hello! Project groups, they are really easy to listen to and have excessive international fanbase (compared to other acts), so you will find news about them without trouble. As for now Hello! Project consists of:

Morning Musume (’18) - literally group that is 20 years old. They started in 1997 as five members, then kept adding new ones, while previous members were quitting (or graduating, if we keep the jpop vocabulary). As for now we had 41 members over 14 generations (a generation is made when members are added - the number of members added at once varies from 1 to even 4, but 15 person lineup is maximum).The biggest hits they had include: love machine, koi no dance site, ren’ai revolution 21, happy summer wedding, aruiteru, one two three, wagamama ki no mama ai no joke. there are so many good songs for them, so if you want to know more, send me another message, i don’t want to flood it there...

Angerme (formely known as S/Mileage) - they are also generational, but they started in 2009 as 4 members. Since then, only one original member left is their leader Wada Ayaka. They had so many good songs lately, but i personally love Umaku Ienai, Dondengaeshi, Mahoutsukai Sally and Taiki Bansei. The member Sasaki Rikako is part-filipina! 

Juice=Juice were touring south america lately and they have many foreign-inspired songs such as ca va? ca va? and fiesta! fiesta! and also their dream road is a gem! 

Country Girls - are the group i personally love, but they become something like holiday-unit, since 2 members decided to focus on their studies, and 3 others were transferred to other groups (the ones i already described). But they are still active since like 1999 (with yearly-long hiatuses but still!). From the newest generation i personally adore ALL their songs, so here you got the playlist. 

Kobushi Factory and Tsubaki Factory - they are the newest groups, so they are just starting, esp Tsubaki. But i recommend Dotsukoi! Kenkyo ni daitan, Sakura Night Fever, Kobushi no Hana, for Kobushi and for Tsubaki - Hatsukoi Sunrise, Uruwashi no Camellia, Shuukatsu Sensation.

So it’s Hello! Project. For keeping up with them the best site you can find is hello-online.org and for translations projecthello.com also there’s helloprojectwikia, so if you want to learn about their history and find some trivia, it’s a go-to.

AS FOR NON-HAROPURO.

I personally love Keyakizaka46, they are part of Sakamichi Group, which are produced by the same guy who created AKB48, which you might heard about, since they are doing the Produce48 with Mnet, lmao. Anyways, Keyaki are quite young, since they debuted last year and CREATED A FREAKING BLAST in Japan, so i think every song they released was a hit? There are currently 43 of them, and 23 are in kanji keyaki (the main group), others are in hiragana keyaki. Songs that i’d recommend, include: Silent Majority, Sekai ni wa Ai shika nai, Shibuya Kara PARCO ga Kieta Hi, Futari Saison, Otona wa shinjitekurenai,Bokutachi no sensou, Fukyouwaon, Eccentric, Kaze ni Fukarete mo.The thing about Keyaki is that you can’t view the original videos from their official yt channel if you don’t have japanese proxy. So the views on links i provided are way lower than what you’ll see on their original, japanese-targeted channel.

AKB48 - are legends, and you can find anything ALL48 related on stage48 and their wikia. Biggest hits include: Heavy Rotation, Koisuru Fortune Cookie (they performed it on MAMA this year lmao), and my personal fav, Kimi Wa Melody, Kuchibiru ni Be my Baby, Ue Kara Mariko.

PASSPO☆ - they are... flight attendant themed group, like i’m not joking. Their leader is named Captain, sub-leader is Chief Purser... really. But they are also a band!! Like full-time band, not the sub-unit kind (ex. AOA Black). The best songs in my opinion are Mr. Wednesday, GPP, Bachelorette wa Owaranai, 7′s Up, Perfect Sky.

And last, but not least, my little kiddies from Team Syachihoko, who started as local idols, but then expanded and are doing budokans now?? How??? I love E-Kurashi, J.A.N.A.I.C.A., Shampoo Hat, Ultra Cho Miracle Super Very Power Ball and Cherie! I posted performance videos where i could, simply because 3BJunior (their agency) has anti-lipsync policy and they are always doing shows live HOW???

Lastly, if you want to get to know other groups, there’s jpop-idols.com, they provide you with music-related news and have quite the database about idols. As for downloading, it’s a pain in the ass, but if you can use torrents, then go to aidoru-online, there’s everything you wish for.

Part 2 - Jikoshoukai (it’s looooooooong so please bear reading it at your own risk orz)

* I’m in my late twenties, but looks like a teenager; one time a jeepney driver mistaken me for a college student and gave me fare discount.

* Am a Taurus, I think iirc an A+? (have forgotten about it since high school, during our physical examination at the school clinic), and my birth date sounds like a Star Wars phrase pun.

* Height’s more or less a 5’5” (until that realization a month ago, I always go on believing that I’m a 5’3” lol).

* You can describe me as a (kinda) my-pace type of girl, but in my case, more like a girl who does things in a whim and more or less likely to regret doing them.

* Always bullied since childhood, that’s why I hold grudges until now haha

* First impressions (when I see one) are hit or miss. When a person did something that make me, say, cringe... 👎🏻 unless I can see some progress.

* Also cringed at wrong grammar and spelling (gdi so many apostrophe S’s I kennat—), no offense.

* Is a cat person nyaa~

* Always been drawing stuff since childhood, wherever I can set my pen/pencil/coloring materials/etc on....even on borrowed books at our university library. Shh~

* Speaking of books, since the age of two I frequently read and read and read lots of reading materials—ranging from novels to newspapers to magazines etc. Had a collection of them at home btw, paperbacks and US magazine backissues, mostly. Amongst them, had a few Jan Karon books (under the Mitford Years series) and some Lorna Landvik novels.

* Speaking of library, this is like second home to me... lots of books, computer stations, wifi (lol), air conditioning system (another lol), solo study cubicles to take a nap on whenever time calls for it, and you can borrow almost all of the books (max. 5-6 at a time).

* I’m one of the lucky few who are referred to as the Batang ‘90s (‘90s Kids)—because, unlike kids nowadays, we’ve experienced watching Tagalog-dubbed anime during weekday afternoons after school in the 1990’s and 2000’s-early 2010’s, for one.

* An anime enthusiast, always watching anime and reading manga, one of the reasons why I draw until this day—the other because of my dear aunt (may God always bless her soul~ Also am the Secretary of my college alma mater’s anime club for I guess two years idk? Ahaha~

* Cosplayed twice during college: the first one is a disaster and my second one is super goooood xD (One of my club senpais joked about the colors of the cloth used on our maid costumes—during my first year, we’ve managed a Maid Cafe during our annual University Days—being bright and vivid as the colors of the jeepney routes in our province; he called mine the Marisol, after the Marisol-Pampang route—ctto pic)

* Been fascinated with Japan and the Japanese culture since childhood: during Grade 2, I’ve purchased a Highlights Top Secret Japan puzzle set; during Grade 6, my older cousin who now based in Japan with her own family gave me CDs of Hamasaki Ayumi and EXILE, among others.

* Collected anime posters, laminated cards, and stickers during Grade 6 until all my high school years. Dunno where they are now...

* Am picky with what I watch and read, whether it’s anime, manga, or a novel/book/magazine. ‘Cause I have a damn refined taste lol

* I also have multiple fandoms across some of the genres. I’m an Hello! Project fan since 2008 (first oshimen was Morning Musume’s Kusumi Koharu, now it’s the 15th gen’s Kitagawa Rio from Morning Musume ‘20; also a BEYOOOOONDS fan—but I love all of the girls like my younger sisters....even though my real younger sister’s a pain in the arse sometimes), a casual 48G fan since AKB48’s Heavy Rotation hit the Oricon charts—and kinda supported its international sister groups too, like our very own MNL48...but kinda laylowed since late last year. Aside from MNL48, I also supported its similar (but related?) local aidoru counterparts, Aidoru Sozai and CH4U, since 2018. But, ever since that goddamn COVID-19 virus and quarantine started, the need to support the members had gradually lost in my hands (don’t worry tho, I still checked out on their SNS even if not on a daily basis).

* Before, I always listened mostly to idol songs (75% of which are H!P), but when my old phone broke (and we have wifi now) I tuned in daily to Spotify and listened to some of its playlists—to which I select a few songs and gathered them in my own playlist full of J-Tracks and old stuff.

* I’m a huge fan of Takaya Natsuki’s “Fruits Basket”, ever since I have watched the Tagalog-dubbed original/Studio Deen version on TV every Saturday morning during the early 2000’s. Read the almost-150+-ish chapters during my high school and college days, read some of “Fruits Basket ~another~”, and now currently watching the 2019 version. Also have a dog-eared TokyoPop copy of the ~Cat~ fanbook skl.

* Due to the influence of some of my artist collab buddies and a certain redraw challenge (#HaikyuuRedraw), at almost three? months, I’m basically new to the Haikyuu!! Fandom. In less than a month, I’ve watched Seasons 1 until the first half of On The Top!!—including the OVAs, read the full 400+ chapters of the “Haikyuu!!” manga non-stop (because, ‘it’s fast-paced’ as I have told one colleague before), and its spin-offs “Haikyuu-Bu” and “Let’s Haikyuu”, and watched all four compilation movies. (Now rewatching Season 2 btw...) *whispers low* Not to mention countless fanfictions and doujins...... FUN FACT: If you visited my Pinterest page, you’ll be annoyingly (imo) amazed at how many Haikyuu!!-related memes, comic panels, fanarts and stuff I have saved in my two boards. Also made some chibi fanarts (first one being Inarizaki’s Capt. Kita; will post Kenma’s later tonight) and some WIP sketches (one Hinata, one Oikawa—on an UFO, duh—and a Yachi... all of them chibified) that idk when the fuck will I start to work on them again qwq (Whew... my longest paragraph so far, sorry~)

* Created my Facebook art page and began sharing my doodles and drawings to the public since 2017 (more then three years ago), then since early 2018 started doing MNL48 and other local aidoru groups’ fanarts in trad (colored ballpens and colored pencils on cheap bond paper halves). Then early 2020, I started doing anime fanarts as part of a collab for I think half a year now.

* I have been a member of two artists’ collaboration groups on Facebook—MFA48 (specializing in mostly MNL48-related group fanart collabs) and Anime Art Collaboration Group (an exclusive-for-Filipino-artists’ collab group specializing in two-week anime collabs and other art activities, to which I’m a part of its Council as the Fukaichou/Council VP). Also a staff member at a memeposting Facebook page for more than a year now (belated Happy Anniversary to me lol~).

* Did make some padorus, a few memes—including an all-in-one virtual powerbank charger, ‘patent pending’—and stuff.

* WIPs old and new kept on piling up due to many distractions (namely, this phone I’m using rn and its many installed apps) and disturbances (my fam, on the top of the list). And I really hate it qwq hence the frustration and stress...

* A lazy person actually tee hee~ (and a big eater but kinda slim like Miaka from “Fushigi Yuugi”)

¹ It’s a graduation tradition in Japan for guys to give the girl they like buttons off of the school jacket they’ve worn throughout the year as a keepsake. It’s not really relevant to the song, but the most coveted button is the second from the top, since it’s the closest to the heart.

Also, although this is primarily Dorothy Little Happy’s signature song (they released it like...four times, iirc), I can’t help but bring two idol groups into it. First, here’s a video of a young Ishida Ayumi dancing backup for Dorothy Little Happy before her successful audition into Morning Musume.

Secondly, BiS covered this song, with a slightly more rockish arrangement, and released it as the b-side to Get You!, their collaborative single with Dorothy Little Happy. So have a hilarious dance cover from BiS and then a decidedly more tearjerking video of their performance of this song at their last live (before, you know, they regrouped with a completely different lineup.)

Not really a note and I’m sure 99% of the fanbase knows, but since I know it didn’t click for me as a fan until I started learning Japanese:

奇麗な星 (what Tsunku was thinking when he wrote “a beautiful star” in English) is basically “a beautiful planet” and refers to the Earth. (If you’re interested in the explanation as to why,  星 is used poetically to refer to any shiny celestial object, stars and planets alike. It’s sort of like how in English we call Venus the “morning star”.)

So the chorus you hear across the song is basically “Hard work, a future, a beautiful planet—hard work, uh huh, a beautiful planet. Hard work, progress, a beautiful planet. Hard work, peace, a beautiful planet.”

This also explains why the MV has all sorts of earth “environments” (farms, cities, mountains, plains) and the CD cover has the girls standing with the Earth in the backdrop.

Also, much like a much more recent single, Koko ni Iruzee samples traditional folk music in its dance break: Kalinka, a Russian song written in 1860.

On an unrelated note, this song had several tie-ins, including to a karaoke mic, but also as the TBS theme song for the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics (Nacchi was a co-host for the show!), and as TV Tokyo’s opening theme song for Idol wo Sagase! It was also the last of the Morning Musume singles arranged by the legendary Dance Man, and thus sort of an end of an era.
