Everyone knew you were an absolute workaholic. You spent a bunch of hours a day sitting in front of your type writer and computer, writing about horror stories. You even drew some of them. Sometimes you would even sit there for a whole day, writing. It was really bad especially since you didn't take care of yourself a lot.

Your boyfriend, Enji Matsushita, who you had met through your found love of horror, would always attempt to take care of you without taking you away from your work. However, he hadn't visited in a week, leaving you in a state that you didn't even know was possible.

You had been drawing and writing for your new horror comic "Kitara za monsutā." It had been a while since you last got up to look at yourself in the mirror, talk to friends, or even taken care of yourself. It had been work, work, work, work, and more work. You were on a deadline. Slowly but surely the panic of not reaching that deadline built up inside of you.

Finally you got up, feeling woozy after staring at a screen for so many hours. You looked at the time. Enji was supposed to be back today, he had been at a convention. That panic started to build up as you stumbled to the bathroom, seeing yourself in the state that was you. It made you think of the monster from your story, that was all you saw, staring right back at you.

Your chest feels heavy as you stare at yourself in the mirror, the other person being an unrecognizable creature staring back at you. Is this what it feels like? To be a monster? Is that was I actually look like? Were all questions that pounded against your skull. Your head hurt but your eyes hurt more as your chest felt tight. You couldn't breathe, you couldn't think, you just simply felt nothing but afraid.

You slide down the wall onto the floor as the thing in the mirror slowly looks down at you. It had your features but it wasn't you, unless it was. There is a pounding feeling in your head as your eyes water and you grab at your chest, you can't breath. You can't feel anything but panic. Everything around you was spinning, your face hot, your eyes stinging.

You hadn't even noticed when the front door opened, or when Enji wrapped his arms around you. He was rocking back and forth with you in his arms. All you noticed was the panic shrinking as you shattered with sobs and incoherent mumbling into the arms of him. He was calm, it was his way of keeping you calm instead of him worrying and panicking.

"It's okay, I'm here." He whispered, giving you a little squeeze.

i cannot stand the fact adap Chishiya is a Hearts player, sowz. it's clear to me the adap writers completely misunderstood what makes someone a Hearts player in the first place and ran with it.

Chishiya can read others emotions to some extent, sure, but not in-depth enough to sympathize.

you wanna know why Chishiya (and Niragi) are Diamonds players? because they don't care enough to truly understand the hearts of others. they manipulate situations, not (usually) out of desperation, but because it's all they know. they lack a genuine understanding with others.

(adap) Arisu being a Diamonds player also completely misses the point: Arisu is so similar to Chishiya and Niragi that if, at any point prior to the Borderlands, he had one more thing go wrong, he could've ended up like the two of them; but he didn't because he refused to be like that.

Arisu is a Hearts player because he's both smarter than he gives himself credit for, and emotionally mature enough to take to heart (wink wink) the emotions of others and actively put himself in their shoes to get through a game.

that last reason is why Matsushita Enji is such a lousey Hearts player, because, like Chishiya and Niragi, he isn't emotionally mature enough to truly be good at Hearts. he has great setups, sure, but he's too proud to acknowledge other players and their inteligence, which is why he was ultimately defeated by Yaba and Banda.

Yaba and Banda both come from backgrounds where they need to read others to some extent: Yaba, a CEO who climbed the corporate ladder by reading others and using those emotions to his advantage (as we saw happen with Arisu when he was confronted by the militants), and Banda, a misogynistic murderer who got into the houses of women he killed, needed to be agile enough to get them to trust him by manipulating the situation in his favor, all while keeping in mind the emotions of those he killed.

Hearts games are not won by sheer manipulation, as we saw with Enji and Urumi; there needs to be a level of connection with others if you want to survive, which is also why Mitsurugi's defeat was so upsetting; ideally, he did everything right, but ultimately was a bit too confident in his plan and thus, refused to acknowledge the power the other players had. he was too good of a person.

Mira is a bit of an outlier, not because she was bad at the games or anything, but because she's the perfect mix of both understanding and master manipulator; if she went up against any other player in the Borderlands, they would easily lose. Arisu almost lost too, but as we've established, Hearts games are built off connections with others and Usagi was needed in order to make it.

I'm sure Mira was well-aware of that fact, especially with Arisu, but her ulimate failure was the same as Mitsurugi's: she ended up downplaying the connection between him and Usagi. Hearts games need love, level-headedness, mild manipulation, and an open mind if you intend to win.

going back to my main point, that's why Chishiya either avoids Hearts games all together, manipulates people during them, or turns to violence; he lacks the emotional maturity and agency to clear one the way they are meant to be cleared, why Arisu is a much better Hearts player than Chishiya will ever be, and why the adap writers completely misunderstood that point.

Note: There's a Hayatou Doudou in the manga but his role in it is based on Alice.

Kuzuryu, the rare lawyer who upheld equality in life and games, is The Dodo, the extinct bird who led a caucus-race of fair opportunities.

2. GINJI KYUUMA (K♧) is THE GRYPHON

Kyuma, the philosophical artist whose nudity shocked Arisu & co., is The Gryphon, the wise singing mythical creature whose half-lion, half-eagle appearance amazed Alice.

3. MIRA KANOU (Q♥) is THE QUEEN OF HEARTS

Mira, the neuroscientist- psychiatrist who wanted to save Arisu through croquet mind games, is the Queen of Hearts, who invited Alice to croquet and never really executed anyone.

4. ISAO SHIRABI (K♤) IS THE RED KNIGHT

Shirabi, the merciless mercenary who battled Aguni and targeted Arisu & co., is The Red Knight who battled The White Knight and targeted Alice on the chess battlefield.

5. LISA (Q♤) is THE RED QUEEN

Note: In the Alice books, the Red Queen and The Queen of Hearts are two different characters.

Lisa, the athletic woman who pursued Arisu in a game called Checkmate, is The Red Queen, the sprinter queen who wanted Alice on her side in the Looking-Glass chess battlefield.

6. ENJI MATSUSHITA (J♥) is THE KNAVE OF HEARTS

Matsushita, the hypnotist who cheated at his own game through cookies, is The Knave of Hearts, who conspired with unknown persons to steal The Queen's jam tart.

7. AMON KOMOYAMA (J♢) is HUMPTY DUMPTY

Komoyama, the balding representative of gambling syndicate who boasted his skills and got killed, is Humpty Dumpty, the egg-like creature (symbol of a fallen monarch) who thought that it was clever and fell to its death.
