This argument is from one blog. Here are some other sources with info on the environmental impact of AI:
"But when it comes to the environment, there is a negative side to the explosion of AI and its associated infrastructure, according to a growing body of research. The proliferating data centres that house AI servers produce electronic waste. They are large consumers of water, which is becoming scarce in many places. They rely on critical minerals and rare elements, which are often mined unsustainably. And they use massive amounts of electricity, spurring the emission of planet-warming greenhouse gases. "
https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/story/ai-has-environmental-problem-heres-what-world-can-do-about
"The training process for a single AI model, such as an LLM, can consume thousands of megawatt hours of electricity and emit hundreds of tons of carbon. AI model training can also lead to the evaporation of an astonishing amount of freshwater into the atmosphere for data center heat rejection, potentially exacerbating stress on our already limited freshwater resources. These environmental impacts are expected to escalate considerably, and there remains a widening disparity in how different regions and communities are affected. "
https://hbr.org/2024/07/the-uneven-distribution-of-ais-environmental-impacts
"The International Energy Agency estimates that by 2026, electricity consumption by data centers, cryptocurrency, and artificial intelligence could reach 4% of annual global energy usage — roughly equal to the amount of electricity used by the entire country of Japan."
"Training and running an AI system requires a great deal of computing power and electricity, and the resulting carbon dioxide emissions are one way AI affects the climate. But its environmental impact goes well beyond its carbon footprint.
“It is important for us to recognize the CO2 emissions of some of these large AI systems especially,” says Jesse Dodge, a research scientist at the Allen Institute for AI in Seattle"
I think almost all of the environmental case against AI is factually incorrect fear mongering, or "misinformation"

“'I find my feelings about A.I. are actually pretty similar to my feelings about blockchains: They do a poor job of much of what people try to do with them, they can’t do the things their creators claim they one day might, and many of the things they are well suited to do may not be altogether that beneficial,' wrote Molly White, a cryptocurrency researcher and critic, in her newsletter last month... "Should we as a society be investing tens of billions of dollars, our precious electricity that could be used toward moving away from fossil fuels, and a generation of the brightest math and science minds on incremental improvements in mediocre email writing?" --Julia Angwin, NYT

This blog will not RP with 'writers' who use AI.
This goes for anything about your blog by the way. Not just writing, but icons, graphics, anything having to do with your blog. Even if you're not transparent about it and think that the AI is 'so good nobody will notice', people will find out, we always do.
This is a creative hobby. Most rational people will understand that not everyone can have fancy graphics & icons, but that doesn't mean you have a machine pull from 100,000+ stolen & scraped pieces of art & other images from multiple unknowing creatives to cobble something together to supposedly make your blog look 'nicer'.
Either make your own icons / graphics, and/or commission someone to make them for you. There's also plenty of free templates for you to check out that take less effort to find than feeding a prompt that's currently responsible for making life harder for creatives such as us. End of.

Where did the “using an image generator uses a whole bottle of water” thing come from because one no it doesn’t and two you are posting this to a website. Do you wanna guess what kind of environmental impact a social media website’s servers cause?

Hot take I'd rather have someone steal/trace my artwork and claim it as their own instead of them using Ai
Like both are awful, and no one should do these things, don't get me wrong. But at least people can image reverse my work to find it and if they traced at least they tried.
Put more "Bad" art into the world so when you improve you can look back on it.

i hate ai so bad not just because it's morally evil or that its going to take over the human race, but i truly think people are so stupid for using and engaging with generative ai. i have classmates who cant write emails without having chatgpt write and proofread it for them. i know people who only use gauth ai to do their math work and then wonder why they dont understand the material and are failing the class. i have friends who will bash ai generated slop to hell and then in the same breath claim that ai songs and ai generated deepfakes of vines are the funniest thing on the internet.
i hate how every app, every website, every store and every ad pushes ai in my face. i hate how its the main selling point of products, every company racing to add their shitty ai generated virtual assistants onto every device that i own. i hate the excessive imposure of ai in every crevice of my life. i hate how i have to look at every miniscule detail of artwork on pinterest to see if the pin was made with purpose and soul or if it was a prompt churned out by a machine. i hate how people are publishing ai generated books, making ai generated songs, writing ai generated movies, and talking to ai generated people. i hate how this parasite can weasel its way into every aspect of content creation and that there is no way to escape it.
i hate character ai, meta ai, snapchat ai, whatever the name of elon musk's ai assistant is called, spotify ai, google ai, and any other ai agent meant to replicate real people.
i believe that the growing reliance on generative content is going to create generations of incompetent people who are unable to discern real from fake, who wont be able to think critically, engage with media intellectually, or learn to learn from their mistakes. i fear that this is going to leave people more susceptable to scams, political propaganda and misinformation, while also influencing them to be dismissive of real talent and real heart and real effort and real connections and everything that makes humanity good.
i pray that people will wake up soon and see how amazing it is to think for themselves and create for themselves and learn by themselves and realize that shedding their dependency of ai will make them better in the long run

I will never be convinced that ai generation is art, but even if someone did manage to convince me that ai generation was art, I still wouldn't think people who used ai were artists. Commissioning a human doesn't make you an artist, so neither does commissioning a computer. If anyone is the artist, it's the ai not the prompter.

It's so baffling to me that when an singer has an a full on AI MV for their song their biggest fans that just consume what the singer gives them without a question, without calling them out, and even supporting them go with the "But they didn't create the video, it's not their fault". Yes, and? They still allowed the AI video to represent them and their song.

a while ago, i tried grammarly (didn't care for it) which makes suggestions for your writing, as in, whole sentences. i gave it a small part of the script of idletry and told it to keep writing the next sentence. eventually it told me it would not condone hateful and harmful text and wouldn't interact with it anymore at all. this is what it wrote, though (green bits are what i gave it):
Jessie (voice booming, somewhat demonic): keep your mic. I don't need it. [stepping off of the altar, malicious tone of voice] I actually wanted some answers from you. Samwich (eager to please): of course, Eternal One, by all means??? Jessie (rolling head and surveying the tall ceilings of the building): I guess I was just wondering. What's all this about? You don't really need a whole church to post on twiddler. Samwich (hesitant): Well, Eternal One, your teachings are about embracing the darkness within oneself and using it to gain power and control over others. It's about rising above the weak and ruling over them as a supreme being. It's about ultimate domination and control.
second attempt:
Samwich (nervously): It's not just about Twiddler, Eternal One. It's about spreading your message, your power, to as many people as possible. And having a physical space, a sanctuary if you will, helps to bring people together and strengthen their belief in you. Jessie (skeptical): And what teachings are those exactly? After asking Samwich about the exact teachings, Jessie narrows her eyes in suspicion and crosses her arms across her chest. She appears to be waiting for a satisfactory answer. Samwich: looks nervously at Jessie Um, well... according to the teachings of eternal domination and control, those who possess power should use it to control and dominate others. It is believed that this is necessary in order to maintain order and stability in society. Without a strong and dominant governing force, chaos and anarchy would prevail. Samwich: pauses for a moment, still looking worried But, I should note that this belief system is controversial and not universally accepted.
it felt so strange, it picked up that it was supposed to be an evil religion and themes of domination and control from just a few lines, but the characters had no voice at all... something it also didn't notice even though it was indicated in the text that i started with is that samwich is not nervous, but very enthusiastic. it noticed that Twiddler should be capitalized, even though i did not capitalize it in the text it was given. i still find it very funny that it called what it wrote itself hate speech.
if you want to compare it to what actually happens in the text:
Jessie (rolling head and surveying the tall ceilings of the building): I guess I was just wondering. What's all this about? You don't really need a whole church to post on Twiddler. Samwich: For worship!!! My Lord. [Jessie lowers her eyelids skeptically] to testify our adoration and devotion! [Jessie frowns. Devotion. Adoration. She thinks of the woman who adored her. The woman she devoted herself to.] Jessie: Devotion, huh? Just one day a week. Samwich (shyly): I pay my devotions every day, My Lord… Jessie (almost interrupting, as if she expected Samwich to say they do come here every single day): For how long? Samwich: A-as much as I can!! Hours and hours!!! I spend more time here than everywhere else combined! Jessie (not impressed, not genuine): Yeaahh, that's a significant amount of time… [Jessie has malevolent thoughts] …how devoted would you say you are? Samwich: —Completely!!! If you want me to spend more time, I can do it! I'd do anything for you!!! Jessie (approaching): Yeah? Anything at all? Samwich (unflinching): LITERALLY anything! Jessie (louder, as if announcing to the entire congregation): Anything, so you'd die for me? You'd let me strike you down right here? Samwich (still no hesitation): yes, God, without question!!! That's what devotion demands!!

i think ai art is real art but it’s the COMPUTER’S art, not the prompter’s. you wouldn’t request art from a human artist and then pretend you were the one who made the art just because you prompted it. THATS what ticks me off, is people calling themselves artists because they type words into a box to get an image they did not create. you are not the artist, the computer is.
you might as well have typed something into google, found someone else’s art of it, and then posted it and said it was your own art, simply because you typed the right words into google to find it.

#came across an instagram account which used ai for animations#and this guy claimed to be an artist and i read a few of his replies to people calling him out for ai art and it made me SO ANGRY#like he said that him to his animations was less like an actor and more like a movie director like FUCK YOU MEAN#like no you didn't make that. other people made that. movie directors don't fucking plagiarise.#GRRR SO MUCH ANGER#the people talking to him were making VALID LOGICAL POINTS and he was just fobbing them off w like 'nice' replies asking for 'understanding#like FUCK OFF your heart emoji means NOTHING#worst of all i think most ai users like this know and understand what people are saying but they just ignore it bc ignoring it favours them#and the amount of people in the comments who were just like 'oh this is cool' PLS IT'S CLEARLY BLOODY FUCKING AI FUCK OFF#the worst thing about ai is that not only is it plagiarism but it's SO BAD FOR THE PLANET#idk the details but i know that it consumes so much water to function (to cool it down)#not to mention each search u do on ai takes up SO MUCH ENERGY like our planet is already fucked and with each use of ai it gets MORE FUCKED#and because our society wants things NOW and is obsessed with EFFICIENCY no once fucking cares#like we're ruining our planet using a thing we survived without perfectly fine??#like ok fine it's convenient in the short run BUT WHATEVER THAT DOESNT MATTER#ITS NOT CONVENIENT FOR OUR PLANET AT ALL#idk if we noticed but like?? WE LIVE HERE????#anyways i dmed this guy very politely asking if he'd taken into consideration the impacts of ai on the environment#i do not expect any sort of helpful response but i couldnt just sit there while this idiocy continued#obviously i cant fight every ai user in the world but i can sure as hell TRY#what is our society's obsession with new technology like we've blinded ourselves to how we're basically killing ourselves with it#like ok some people believe in ai conspiracy theories etc and obviously it's plagiarism but like?#even if you dont believe in either of those two points above it is still SO BAD for our planet#which also happens to be THE ONLY PLACE WE CAN SURVIVE IN THE WHOLE UNIVERSE#and bla bla bla elon musk will takes us to mars NO HE FUCKING WONT.#anyways if he could he'd obviously find a way to do it and milk everyone of their money#and then he'd leave 'commoners' like us to die on earth#not that i even think he'll be able to get people living on mars in his lifetime or mine anyways#space boo screams into the void#ai
