While the Madagascar timeline can be a mess at times, it's so funny to me when they actually try to make the timeline make sense but it just comes completely out of left field. Like in MALW, the two chimps Pickles and Dave had been supporting characters throughout the whole series, but there had been no sign of Mason and Phil. How did they solve this problem, then? In the final episode, Pickles and Dave were put in a rocket and launched into space for 20 years. And in AHKJ, they spend the final four episodes just getting rid of all the villains and other supporting characters that weren't present in the original film (i.e. Karl moves to Florida, Uncle King Julien runs off with Zora, Clover marries Sage and moves to the other side of the island, etc.). Don't even get me started on the comics, because there is a whole lot of stuff going on in there.

Theme 5 Rivals
for today's theme I decided to write about my favorite rivalry in AHKJ
the sister rivalry between Clover and Crimson
Tumblr media
it all started in the season two episode Crimson and Clover in this episode Crimson made her debut and although their rivalry was not the main element of the plot of this episode the seeds were planted here which will become the basis for future episodes
for the real rivalry between them we have to wait until Crimson's next appearance in the next episode The Man in the Iron Booty
in this episode we see a serious rivalry with Crimson trying to kill Clover and we see them actually fighting each other
then we have to wait until season three episode Jungle Games for the next portion of their rivalry, and I will say here we learned an interesting thing and more or less such that Clover is ready to compromise her views in the name of rivalry with Crimson (she was ready to cheat)
then Crimson appeared for a moment at the end of season three in the episode Eye of the Clover where she helped Clover avenge their grandmother's death, and she said quite interestingly that she and Clover have a lot of problems between them (yes Crimson this doesn't even begin to describe your train wreck of a sisterly relationship)
then apart from a brief appearance in Exiled Crimson doesn't show up until the very end of the series where she and Clover compete with each other for the last time (unfortunately over who will marry Sage) and in the very last episode the sisters finally make peace with each other
I'll say this, their rivalry is great, their whole sisterly relationship is beautifully complicated and has really great story potential, unfortunately I feel like AHKJ writers really dropped the ball here and wasted good story potential
a lot more could have been done with their rivalry and their relationship
if you want to see a good story about the relationship between Clover and Crimson I recommend fanfic Xanadu Blues by GregTheGroovy

also @ your comment on ukj's romance with zora i always thought it was ridiculous cause like....what? 😭 how does getting a crush on someone make you stop being evil. the man was legit killing people and spending over 5 seasons trying to kill his nephew that kind of 180° change does NOT happen overnight. i don't even view it as a redemption cause its just so ridiculous, badly written and unrealistic for a character like ukj. it just feels rushed too like the clage marriage arc, like it's just the writers trying to get them out of the position of major characters in time for ahkj's ending cause characters like clover and ukj arent in the movies
YOU GET ME!!!!! And, although I agree that Sage and Clover's marriage was rushed I feel like we would have gotten there eventually. It felt like a logical progression. I wish it was paced better, maybe she gets married a while before the season finale so she can come back for it.
For UKJ tho, nah. I fucking voided that shit in my fic. It makes no sense. They could have ended with him creeping into the bushes saying shit like "I'll get the throne one day, nephew..." Leave it open ended for a possible come back.
There just would have been better ways to fade out non-movie characters from the show.

8, 10 and 11 for Willie
Woo! Okay I'm doing this, Willie deserves more love! <3
8: Something about Willie that made me laugh. God so many many things. He's a beautiful boy. One of my favorite moments is in Fast Food Lemur Nation when his submission for the fast food contest was a tyre. He was out here big brain enough to make his submission a joke about a tyre being fast. And the joke just went right over Juliens head.
Tumblr media
The most legendary pun of all time, sorry you missed it Kj 😩
Tumblr media
Bonus? He keeps the tyre and puts it on a leash. What an adorable chaotic bean.💖
10. My favorite moment with Willie in Canon? Again, so many. I really loved the whole bit with him being dangled for the sharks. "OH NO, THE AGGRESSIVE DOLPHINS ARE BACK!" And just the utter look of utter disbelief he throws Tammy when she accuses him, a lemur, of having a monkey's paw. Which she also has. His for a hot second is so indignant like "What the actual heck lady"
Tumblr media
His face, he is so done
Tumblr media
11. My favorite relationship Willie has with another character? Besides his friendship with Pancho, my favorite relationship is his one with Mort. Out of all the lemurs, Willie is one of the kindest to him. I loved how keen he was to apply to be Mort's roommate or whatever it was ("single lemur seeking..." ???). He was so excited and it was adorable. When Mort gets thrown over the fence in Exiled, Willie rushes to his side to pick him up and hold him so tenderly. And Willie so keen to see Mort's drawing in Exiled? God. I have a bunch of headcanons for all of that, but I don't want to bore yall with all of them. 👉👈😳 plus I don't really see people shipping Mort with anyone, but ship or no ship, he's kind to Mort and I like that.

Thank you for the ask! These are super fun, and I love Willie! 💖🥺

This is somewhat of a follow-up to a post I made a while back about the villains throughout the franchise, but in any case I think it's interesting how we have such a wide array of villain archetypes throughout the franchise.
In the films we start out with the fossa as the first main villain, though they don't have much of a personality. The film is very much a fish-out-of-water/man vs. nature type of story, with the main conflict being Alex's reaction to his newfound freedom in the wild. The fossa reflect this, with them still being the antagonist but less-so a straight up villain, since they're meant to reflect the "nature" in this story. As the films go on we progress more and more into actual villain territory. We have Makunga (and Nana) in the second film, DuBois in the third film, and finally Dave in the Penguins film. As you can see, we quickly went from the antagonist pretty much just being nature all the way to the antagonist being your stereotypical evil villain who wants to take over the world (or at least just get revenge on all penguins). Each subsequent film was trying to raise the stakes and one-up the previous films, which meant that the villains became more and more over-the-top.
Even the shows have villains that uniquely suit the story they're trying to tell. As I touched upon in the post I mentioned at the top, the villains in The Penguins of Madagascar are more of the straight-up-evil villain type. Characters like Dr. Blowhole, Hans, and The Red Squirrel are made to pay homage to villains from classic spy films (like Blofeld), who's sole desire is to get revenge/take over the world. The same goes for other antagonists throughout the series, like Clemson, the Rat King, and the Blue Hen. While their appearances may not necessarily be as overt as the previously mentioned three, they're motivations are still pretty much the same.
The villains in All Hail King Julien were somewhat upgraded to reflect the villains of the mid-late 2010s vs those of the mid-late 2000s. They have more complex motivations and somewhat understandable backstories, but still ultimately fall back into stereotypical villain territory. We have plenty of evil relatives as antagonists throughout the franchise, from Uncle King Julien to Bruce to Grandpa Mort, with Crimson even embodying the evil twin archetype. Unlike most of the villains from TPOM, these villains are given backstories to explain their evil-doing, and they're even allowed to grow and develop at times, but at the end of the day they still just become recurring evil villains with a scheme of the week for the protagonists to over come.
Then comes Madagascar: A Little Wild, which doesn't have actual villains for the most part. Most episodes revolve around the characters overcoming an emotional conflict, and a physical villain becomes unnecessary. There are a few exceptions, however. For example, in the episode A Roar Is Born we get Harley Hooves, who's a sort of "never meet your heroes" type of villain. He's someone who Alex looked up to, someone who even played a superhero in a movie, but ended up being the opposite - someone who was self-centered and would do whatever it takes to be the only one in the spotlight. Unlike TPOM and even AHKJ, the few villains they do have aren't relegated to those being largely incapable of change; instead, characters like Harley Hooves are able to learn and grow in the space of a single episode, which suits the type of story this show in particular was trying to tell.
But overall, villains don't have to be complex to be interesting. For instance, a one-note character like Clemson might be more interesting just because they're charismatic and fun to watch carry out their evil schemes. Either way, though, it is interesting looking back and seeing how the villains have evolved to suit the needs of the franchise at the time.

Which of the three Madagascar movies is your favorite and why? And if you don't have one, without hesitation you would see it if you had to choose from the 3 (I think you get the point)
I love this ask because it accounts for my unending equal love for all three films. Madagascar 1 gets seniority, it's been in my life since I was a kid. It's instantly hilarious and iconic, unique and sincere, and I appreciate it more as an adult. The whole world revolves around when Marty says "I'm not leaving without you." I love the eclectic quality with penguins and lemurs as separate groups. Everybody was onto something, and critics don't even APPRECIATE IT!
Now my only criticism: as a kid, it fell flat during the fossa climax. I thought it was.. lame. 😔 This makes me love 3 for how it treats the external drama with enthusiasm and epic heights.
Mada3 as an older teen got me into mada as a fandom, which is the reason I watched ahkj when it came out, which was a life sentence of Clover in my heart furever. I love how it escalates the passion and hold-nothing-backness of 1-2 while paying off what I love about them, so I get the joy of all three in one package. I love the hundred different set pieces. each stage has a separate energy so it's like a new film every 15 mins. The journey is SO fresh, and that was really needed. it's awesome to see the world open up after the zoosters kept getting stranded. and a good ending is rlly important, so I treasure the incredible zoo return.
I understand some people prefer the zooster-interior stories of 1 & 2, but I think the new characters are appropriate. Mada1 is the peak zooster character story, and in Mada3 they externalize what they've learned onto new characters so we see how far they've come. It helps that I LOVE the new characters. Another thing is I adore how 3 makes it so the zoosters are finally connected to the world around them. they're such outsiders everywhere they go in 1 & 2. They had no concept of their place in the world, just to each other. Through the circus, they're connected with other animals, and at last with humans too, the way Alex always imagined.
tldr: 1 and 3 are my fav for different reasons, but I'll choose 3 as my ONE CHANCE TO SEE favorite. I was in love the minute i saw that trailer and dubois put her lipstick on

Theme 10 Alternate Universe - What if
ok what i want to write today would fit better with the "what if" theme but it didn't win so let it be
DreamWorks Animation Television shows can be divided into two periods
the first which i call the Nickelodeon period
it consists of three shows The Penguins of Madagascar Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness Monsters vs. Aliens
The above shows are characterized by being episodic, having self-contained stories with no ongoing plot line and character development, you can literally watch the episodes in almost any order you want
The second period I call the Netflix period
This includes shows like these Dinotrux Trollhunters Fast & Furious Spy Racers Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous
These shows are characterized by being very serialized stories, having ongoing plot lines going from the first episode to the last and ongoing character development
There is one show from the Netflix period called The Adventures of Puss in Boots
This show is quite interesting because its first season was released on January 16, 2015 (technically it was released in three parts of 5 episodes each throughout 2015)
and was very episodic with no ongoing plot and self-contained episodes
The second season was released in December 11, 2015 and the show changed from episodic to serialized with an ongoing storyline until the final episode
the above show represents a transitional moment between the two periods
when Mitch Watson originally pitched AHKJ to DreamWorks Animation Television he wanted a more serialized show which he described as a game of thrones with lemurs, but the exes at DreamWorks Animation Television, while they liked the idea of a King Julien show, had him change it to a more episodic show
and while we got a taste of a more serialized AHKJ in the form of Exiled, the writing team proved they could do a serialized story in the show they did after AHKJ called Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny
you've probably read this far and are wondering what this has to do with "what if"
you see All Hail King Julien was released on December 19, 2014
if Mitch Watson had waited a few more months to pitch AHKJ to DreamWorks Animation Television they might have been more receptive to his original plan and not had him turn it into an episodic show like we got instead
imagine a serialized AHKJ with an ongoing plot lines and character development
just imagine what could have been
