âDana Scully speakingâ
âYou have got to get out more.â
âI get out plenty, thank you very much.â
âYea but ever since everything with that guy you havenât done anything! Youâve been so mopey all week and now I bet youâre sitting in your hotel room being mopey too.â
âYou donât know thatâ
âI will give you a hundred dollars if youâre anywhere but your hotel room right now, aloneâ
âI just havenât felt the need to go anywhereâ
âDana you have to get over yourself!â
âWell even if I did want to go out who am I going to go out with?â
âWhat do you say I come up tomorrow. You know I love that old bar that was across from the hospital, you used to take me there all the time. Weâll go out, have a few drinks, flirt with some boysâŠâ
âMissy I donât knowâŠâ
âDana for once in you life just have fun! I guarantee you one hour with me and youâll have forgotten all about FBI manâ
âOk fine. But we are not staying out late because I have to work the next day and if you start taking shots Iâm leaving you at the bar.â
âNot if youâre taking shots with me!â
âMissy-â
âLove ya Danes gotta go bye!â
âBye Missyâ
It was a tiny little bar called Roscoâs, packed with DC's finest, including G-men, doctors, and college students. The tables were cramped and wobbly and the floor was a little sticky in some spots but Dana had been going since she first started working at the hospital. The doctors had a routine of going out on Friday nights and she had found herself more than once dancing to the old jukebox to Billie Joel and Queen in her practical doctor heels after a long shift. If she had been thinking clearly, the thought that maybe the longstanding tradition would still be continuing this Friday might have popped into her head. But on Friday night she found herself sitting in her favorite bar nursing a beer when the music seemed to cut out and in walked what seemed like every single one of her old colleagues, ready to let off some steam after a long day of saving lives.
It didnât take long for them to notice the two red headed girls sitting at the bar, especially since Missy stopped flirting with the bartender to start asking Scully which of her friends was single quite loudly. She recognized most of them when she looked into the crowd but there were certainly a few new faces. Resident students she guessed.
She quickly waded through all the âDana oh my god how are you!â and âOh wow itâs been so long!â. She was genuinely happy to see some faces. She recognized a woman named Kelsey who joined the hospital at around the same time she did. They had always been close, so when she was greeted with a hug she wasnât surprised. Missy was the social butterfly, flitting through the doctors one by one before winding up back next to her like a meet-and-greet merry-go-round.
âWe should buy them drinks!â Missy giggled at her, clearly enamored with one of the new young doctors that Scully didnât recognize. âYou know Markâs here right?â
She hadnât seen him come in, but it didnât surprise her. She glanced in the corner of the pack to see the familiar salt and pepper hair of Dr. Mark Bordone, cardiac specialist. Before she left DC, the two of them had gone on a date or two. He took her to a bar like this one but much less fun and the interest was clearly one sided. But he bought her drinks and made nice conversation so she had been more than willing to entertain it. She had to admit he still looked good.
He looked over at her and smiled this big smile and she could see his eyes twinkling. She did remember that he was good at parties, the charming type. He smiled across the floor and eased his way over to her, pushing past grad students and a pair of police officers, until he sat down on the stool Missy had abandoned.
âDana Scully it has sure been a whileâ He had a smile that perfectly fit his face, with shiny white teeth that seemed to add to the sparkle in his eyes.
âIt sure has Mark. What have you been up to?â The slightly awkward conversation was better than sitting alone at the bar, since she had no one else to talk to now that Missy was over rubbing shoulders with the other students.
âOh nothing much. Iâve been promoted to head of surgery. Kirk finally retired.â
âWow. Well congratulationsâ. He smiled and she turned to drain her beer. She noticed his eyes flit down to her chest as she leaned back.
Let's take a moment to assess, shall we.
No wedding ring on the finger, so he hadnât tied down one of the nurses. He was handsome, he fit her usual type, he was the biggest flirt she knew, and he wasnât a stranger. And she desperately needed something, anything, to distract herself from the nagging FBI agent who wouldnât leave the back of her mind.
Fuck it.
âWhy donât you use some of that âHead of Surgeryâ money to buy me another drink. I'm sure youâve got plenty to spare.â
She caught a thumbs up from Missy from across the bar as the bartender passed another two beers over the counter.
It was Missy who spotted him first. She had made her way through the crowded bar to Scully, who was still sitting at the bar with Mark. Scully had made it past small talk, and four beers later was now talking about the politics of the cardiac ward with her suitor. She was about to suggest maybe they go to a more quiet table to talk more when Missy popped out of the dance floor and shouted over the music âThereâs a group of FBI people at some of the back tables. Maybe your alien guy is here?â
The night had truly been going so well.
âAlien guy?â Mark asked with a chuckle, and Scully laughed with him. She hadnât known Mulder for long, but he didnât seem like the type to be out on a Friday night in a crowded bar.
âI doubt itâ she giggled, but she shifted closer to Mark as if to show him if he was here, she had moved on. Mark had placed a hand on her thigh and maybe she would have shrugged it off 2 beers ago but with Mulder fresh in the back of her mind she let it rest.
âI donât know but one of them is super cute so Iâll be at their table for a whileâ Missy giggled then slipped back into the dance floor like she was being engulfed by the blob.
âI should probably go check on herâ Scully said with a grin, and Mark shot one back.
âShould I be worried about this alien guy? Heâs not coming from Mars to steal my woman?â He laughed again and she forced a smile.
âNo, no, heâs just a friend. And besides, I donât think this is his sceneâ. She rose from the bar stool and his hand fell off her thigh easily. Â
âIâll be back in a few. I should probably go pull my sister off whatever person sheâs decided to drape herself over.â He was easy to come back to.
He gave her a chuckle and a wave and she allowed herself to be swept away into the crowd, moving with the flow of dancers and drunkards like tides in the ocean to the back corner where Missy had previously pointed. She spotted her sister first, sitting in the lap of some blonde man wearing his FBI bomber jacket. She was just about to stroll over and pull her away when she spotted a gaggle of girls in the next booth on the right and there he was.
Her alien guy.
He looked uncomfortable, with a blonde woman clinging to his side, laughing at something he said with this forced bounce that she probably practiced. But he smiled back at her and tossed his arm around her and Scully felt a fury deep in the pit of her stomach.
She considered just leaving Melissa to run back across the bar, but he took his eyes off Blondie for a second and to glance at the dance floor and she saw the look of recognition in his eyes as he spotted her. Â
In an instant she power walked towards Melissa and yanked her off of G-man number 1, ignoring her âWhat the fuck!â as she dragged her sister back into the dancing mob and away from the gaze of Fox Mulder.
âWhat the fuck was that forâ Missy huffed, pulling herself away from Scullyâs grip, finding a small pocket in the swarm of bodies. Scully, however, was busy peering through strangers' shoulders, trying to see if he was following them. She thought she saw him get up but she couldnât be sure. Missy noticed.
âOh my god he IS here! Where?â She then proceeded to try to stand on her tip-toes before Scully pulled her back down. âIs he the tall one? He is so cute Danes no wonder youâre so hung up on him.â
âYes. But he is with a girl and I donât want to talk to him, so I really would prefer if we didnât make a big deal out of itâ
âOh my god you totally have to win him back. You have to talk to him. Make him jealous. You should dance with Mark!â
âWhoâs Mark?â And there he was, towering over the two of them with a goofy smile that made her feel things she didnât care to admit. Melissa happily slipped back into the dancers, probably to go find her FBI guy again, or more likely watch their conversation through elbows and shoulders. Â
And so they stood in the middle of a crowded dance floor, waiting for the other to make the first move.
âMarkâs my date.â He doesnât need to know that the date was unintentional. She glanced up at him, coldly, trying to avoid lingering on the way that his shirt was unbuttoned to show a glimpse of his collarbone.
âAh. Where is he now?â
âAt the bar. Whoâs Blondie?â
âMy bossâs secretary. Sheâs been trying to get me to go out with her and her friends since I started.â
âSo youâre here on a date.â Scully crossed her arms, waiting for him to get the hint that clearly she didnât want to be talking for much longer.
âI wouldnât call it that. Do you want to dance?â He stepped closer to her and the bubble they had created pressed in on them, making her watch the ground so she didnât step on his toes.
âI should go back to the barâŠâ
âDance with me.â His presence was mesmerizing and his scent intoxicating. The music couldnât have been louder, and yet she felt like she could hear their hearts beating. Maybe, she could just pretend that everything hadnât happened. She could pretend that he was just a handsome stranger she met at a bar and allow herself to be swept up in his arms.
Scully was always good at pretending.
She didnât say yes so much as nod, and then she found his arms wrapping around her and their bubble disappeared completely and she was surrounded by him. His arms, his shirt, his smell, everything about him engulfed her completely and it made sense because as much as she tried to forget him she felt this tether in the back of her head, like a magnet pulling north, and now she had found it and she locked right into place pressed against his chest. They swayed to the music, lost in the sea of bodies, allowing themselves to be pulled with the tides of hips and hands. A song went by, maybe two, and she felt his hand dip lower to rest on the notch above her jeans.
âYouâre wearing navy againâ he whispered into her ear. She opened her eyes suddenly to the sound of his voice. She hadnât even realized they had closed.
âI like navyâ she whispered back, and she could hear him chuckle though she couldnât see his face, his breath hot on her neck.
âIt makes your eyes look like the seaâ. As if to prove his point he pulled back from her and tilted her chin upwards with a finger. She looked up and gazed into his eyes as he stared into hers and she could feel the electricity flowing between them. She felt herself being drawn forward to him. Her eyes fluttered shut, and he was so close, and it was so perfect.
âYou have a case file.â
And there it was.
âExcuse me?â She drew back sharp as a whip and she knew, she knew , it was all too good to be true.
âI looked you up, you have a case file. They did start an investigation, they just never finished itâ She pulled back, pushing back into one of the dancing masses, and she felt his hands drop from her sides. Nothing is ever perfect.
âMulder I-â
âScully I know you said not to meddle but I can help youâŠâ
âAnd I told you I donât want your help! I canât believe you , I canâtâŠâ She backed away from him further, hearing cries of âwatch itâ coming amidst the dancers.
âScully please.â
âNo Mulder. You werenât even supposed to be here, I didnât want to see youâ He steps back in shock and theyâre attracting attention now but she doesnât care. Sheâs lashing out, out of what she doesnât know. âI donât need your help, and I donât need you, so go back to your blonde bitch, she can clearly give you whatever you want from meâ
She felt hands on her shoulders and heard a man say âDana, is something wrong?â but all she could focus on was his face. The way he stared at her like she broke his heart.
He didnât even know her but as she slipped away into the crowd he watched her like she was the worldâs most precious jewel sinking beneath the waves.
She heard Mark talking to him, but the bodies closed the gap between them and Melissa took her by the wrist and led her to the front, out the door, and the cool air of the night hit her face.
âDo you want to go home?â Missy reached up and wiped a tear from Scullyâs cheek. She hadnât even realized she was crying. She nodded and Melissa turned to call the cab. She shivered, listening to the muffled music in the bar, processing everything that just happened.
The door opened and Mulder walked out. Instantly, her sister was back in front of her, like a 5â2 battle shield.
âIâm going to have to ask you to get the fuck away from us.â For what she lacked in stature, Missy made up for in sheer grit. She once picked a bar fight with a Navy Seal. She could take a 6â1 pouty FBI agent.
âI just want a secondâ
âYou donât deserve a second.â
âPlease. I promise, just one second and then youâll never hear from me again.â He glanced over Missyâs shoulder and caught Scullyâs eye. Missy looked back and Scully gave a resigned nod.
âFine, but Iâm timing you.â
Mulder stepped past Melissa in the way you would step past an armed bomb and proceeded to invade Scullyâs space again.
âWhat do you want?â
âIâm sorryâ
âFor?â She stood with her hands on her hips, but he looked so pitiful. She noticed his eye was swollen.
âIâm sorry for getting into something thatâs none of my businessâ
âWhy?â He looked confused so she elaborated. âWhy do you want to help me so much?â He looked at her again and the way the streetlights bounced off him made him look like he was glowing. She felt another tear slip down her cheek. The bar music faded away and all that was left was the humming of the lights.
âI want to help you because I feel connected to you. Ever since we first met Iâve felt this pull like aâŠâ He searched for the words.
âLike a magnet.â He snapped his fingers and it startled her.
âExactly. And I know, I know that everything that happened to you is really none of my businessâ She raised an eyebrow at him but he didnât notice, instead stepping closer so only she could hear.
âBut I like you so much. More than I think Iâve ever liked anyone. I think youâre smart and gorgeous and for Godâs sake Scully you save little kids lives for a living and I donât deserve you at all, but I want to make your business my business.â She was smiling now, and he brushed a hair back from her face, letting his hand linger down her cheek.
âAll of my business?â It was a test.
âAll of your business. Not even just the parts you think Iâm interested in. I want the mundane, the ordinary, the outright boring. I want everything that has to do with youâ
He passed.
âOk.â She looked up at him and he seemed shocked, like he truly didnât expect the conversation to go this way.
âOk?â
âYes, ok-â And she couldnât finish her sentence because his lips were on hers and everything was right in the world. His hand found her waist and she gasped but his tongue stole it away. She returned the favor and wrapped her hands around his neck, tilting up on her toes to reach him. He kissed with a fury and she met him with equal passion, their lips moving in synchronicity. She let a moan slip out when his hand dipped lower to cup her ass through her jeans. She would have been embarrassed if he didnât smile into her mouth when she did and grip tighter. She brought her hand to cup his face but he winced and pulled away.
âWhat happened to your eye?â She hadnât noticed the color in the streetlights but up close she could see the reddish shade it was turning.
âWell your date didnât seem to like how I made you run out crying and all, so he decided that I needed to be taught a lessonâ.
âIâm so sorryâŠâ
âNah itâs alright. After he realized he just assaulted a federal agent he decided I wasnât worth itâ She went to run her fingers over his eye but he grabbed her wrist and instead kissed her fingers. He was about to lean in again before he heard an â Ahem â over his shoulder, and he turned to see Missy with her arms crossed next to a waiting cab.
âI donât mean to interrupt whatever all this isâŠâ she waved her hand to gesture to the two of them, âBut our cab is here.â
He turned back to her and pulled her close, placing a firm, lingering kiss on her lips. She could hear him sigh when they pulled apart.
âIâll see you soon?â
âYes you will.â
âGoodnight Scully.â
âGoodnight Mulder.â
Maybe the world could be perfect. At least for a little while.

A/N:Â Surprise! I found some stuff I had written in a notebook a while ago and actually managed to finish a chapter already :D! It's a quite dialogue heavy one, but I hope you all like it :) (Also this is from Aaronâs POV again, it just worked out liked that, will probably be back to switching between them in the next chapter).
(Read on AO3)
(Chapter 1) (Chapter 2) (Chapter 3) (Chapter 4) (Chapter 5) (Chapter 6) (Chapter 7) (Chapter 8)
Chapter 9:
He heard the murmur of people in the theatre get louder and louder as he walked down the stairs towards the backstage area. He crossed the sign that told them the audience would be able to hear them from there on and finally found himself stage left. Nervous energy was running through his body as he caught a glimpse of the people finding their seats. This was only his 3rd show as a principle and it was his first original work. He knew his mum would be somewhere in the crowd of people, orchestra, row five, seat 16, to be precise, he had gotten her a seat smack-dab in the middle. Cain would probably be sitting next to her along with Lisa and Belle. Marlon, Charity and April were somewhere else in the theatre as he had only been able to reserve four tickets.
Cain had most likely been pressured by his mum to come along, his uncle still not the biggest fan of ballet, but he would do anything for his sister and his nephew. Lisa and Belle had come to love ballet and had been to most of his shows over the years. Marlon was only there because April had begged him, saying she was old enough to go and see Aaron perform now. And Charity was probably only there to get out of her shift of the Woolpack. Whatever their reason was for coming, Aaron appreciated it a lot, it was always great to share the high from an opening night performance with his family afterwards. He wondered how Robert must feel right now, no family there to support him.
Speaking of Robert, he caught his gaze briefly as Robert made his way over to the other side of the stage where he would enter. Yesterdayâs events had played through Aaronâs mind all day long, not the best preparation for opening night but he had clearly been able to hide it better than Robert, as the other man had been called out more than once during the day. They hadnât really spoken throughout the day, both trying to keep focussed on getting everything right for opening night.
He heard the opening notes ring through the theatre and looked over as Ruby entered the stage from the coulisse next to him. She danced her opening scene and one by one the other dancers entered the stage until it was only Aaron and Robert left backstage. He looked over to the other side of the stage and found Robertâs eyes focussed on him, with a small nod he acknowledged him. Robert nodded back and then they both entered the stage.
Aaron forgot about everything else around him and was fully focussed on dancing his heart out. Movements flowing from him as he danced the first pas de deux with Ruby, eyes focussed on the woman in his arms as he lifted her up easily and spun her in a pirouette. Then smirking over at Robertâs Etienne as he dipped her right in front of him. The charactersâ battle for her hand had started.
A roaring applause burst through his bubble as they finished their pas de deux and he left the stage for Robertâs scene and pas de deux with Ruby. He had a few minutes to catch his breath before he was right back in another intense scene. Time seemed to fly as all of a sudden it was time for his and Robertâs duet. They looked at each other from opposite ends of the stage, reminiscent of the start of the show, and with another mutual nod they ran onto the stage and jumped up, both of them forming a perfectly timed jetĂ©. He grabbed Robertâs arm and twisted him around and into his body, hands wrapping around his waist as he lifted him up high, eyes focussed on each other the whole time. Sparks were flying between them as Aaron lowered Robert back to the floor. Their hands lingered slightly as Etienne twisted away from Antoine in defiance, before both of their character started a petit allegro.
As they ended their quick movements their characters tried to one up each other by performing more and more complicated movements, until finally they burst and Aaronâs lift was coming up. Antoine made out to move away from Etienne, but then twisted around with a turn in the air before âlaunchingâ himself at the other man in anger. Aaron runs up to Robert and feels the other manâs hands wrap around his hips as Robert lifts him up, turns around with the momentum before pushing him off again. Antoine seems to have lost the battle and applause rings through the opera house as Etienne dances victoriously, but then out of nowhere Antoine comes back and Etienneâs victorious sissonne clashes with Antoineâs aggressive sissonne and both of their characters are knocked down.
As Aaron and Robert fall down, Rubyâs Mathilde runs back onto the stage to see both of her suitors dead. She caresses both of them in a mournful dance, before being joined by the other female dancers in a synchronised dance as she stands strong while Aaron and Robert get dragged off stage by Adam and Alex.
Ruby finishes off with an impressive pirouette another loud roar of applause is reverberated throughout the Royal Opera House. Adrenaline rushes through his body as Robert and him run back onto stage to take their bows. Both of them grab one of Rubyâs hands as all three of them bow, before Ruby steps forward to take her own. People are standing and the applause seems deafening; and Aaron canât seem to wipe the grin of his face as he takes in his surroundings.
A great opening night.
---
âMate, have you read this?â Adam asked as he walks into their kitchen holding a newspaper. He must have gone out to get it, as they donât normally get papers.
âWhat?â
âThe review of the show,â Adam said as he shoves the newspaper into his hands.
âBrilliantly mesmerizing new Royal Ballet original.â The headline reads.
It talks about the basic premise of the story and praises Rubyâs performance, but the next line mentions him and Robert.
âThe male competitors, while showing their skills to impress Mathilde, played by female lead Ruby Rosenthal, seem to actually have more sexual tension with each other than the female lead.â
Aaron huffs, âWhat are they on about?â
âMate, itâs true though. Itâs like thereâs an invisible thread that you each keep pulling on, but you never seem to be able to get to each other.â
âSince when are you all metaphorical?â Aaron asks his best friend. Adam is great, but not always the smartest and hearing him spout some random metaphorical shit is confusing.
âIâm not, read the rest of the article.â
He reads the rest of the article, it mentions the bit that Adam had spouted at him. The writer wondering if this apparent sexual tension between the male leads is intentional or not. It then goes on to talk about the rest of the show and the other company dancers, before ending with the details of where to find tickets for the show.
The article gets him thinking. If even complete strangers could see what was going on between them, then why were they still playing this game?
Aaron wanted him, the two kisses they had shared had already left him wanting more, but then the itch shouldâve been gone after their escapades the other day; it wasnât gone, if anything his body craved more. He also knew Robert was right. Getting involved would complicate things at work. Especially now that they were in the same show and in these roles that shared so many scenes. Was Aaron willing to risk the fragile working relationship they had managed to build over the last few weeks?
---
âMy sister is coming to the show today,â Robert said a few days after opening night. They hadnât mentioned what had happened the day before opening night, but they hadnât gone back to avoiding each other either, so Aaron considered it progress.
âThatâs nice, right?â Aaron said with a smile, it always felt great to have family in the audience, he assumed Robert felt the same.
âYes, itâs great. She wouldâve come on opening night, but she couldnât get out of work.â
âAh, that sucks. What does she do?â
âSheâs a cook in a pub,â Robert said with a frown.
âNot what you had in mind for her?â Aaron questioned.
âNo, sheâs way too good to be stuck in a village pub cooking grub for the local boozers. Iâve been trying to convince her to apply to a culinary school over here for ages now. I think sheâs about to finally give in, now that Iâm back in London, and sheâs been moaning about her colleagues a lot lately.â
âItâs nice that you look after her like that,â Aaron replied.
âYeah, well, I missed too much of her growing up already, guess Iâm trying to make up for that still,â Robert sighs with a wary look on his face that intrigues Aaron.
âWhy is that?â
âItâs complicated,â Robert replied too quickly, like it has become a rehearsed answer.
âTry me?â
âIt wasnât by choice. After my mum died⊠stuff⊠happened and I didnât see her anymore, not until 7 years later when my dad died. Sheâs been coming to my shows ever since though, even came to Paris a bunch of times and we were able to forge a pretty great bond over the years.â
âWell, you should invite her backstage, introduce her to everyone,â Aaron responded, though his mind was racing with this new information. What was the âstuffâ that had happened all those years ago? Why hadnât he seen his family for years? He had a feeling it was something to do with his father. Robert really didnât like talking about him, but he didnât want to push the other man. Knew he wouldnât want people pushing him to talk about his. If Robert wanted to tell him he would, eventually. Â
---
âVictoria?â Aaron asked as Robert was about to introduce them.
âAaron, hey.â
âWait, youâre Robertâs sister?â
âDuh, you hadnât made the connection yet? Sugden?
âYeah, well thereâs bound to be more Sugdens around than just your lot,â Aaron shrugged.
âWhat about all the times I mentioned going to London to see my brother called Robert perform,â Victoria chuckled.
âWait, you two know each other already?â Robert asked, confused by the conversation going on in front of him.
âWhyâd you never say youâre from Emmerdale?â was the response he got from Aaron instead.
âHang on, you never did either!â
âOh boys, youâre both as thick as each other,â Victoria said shaking her head. âWith you both in the same show, Iâd assumed you knew.â
âOkay, so how exactly do you know each other?â Robert asked again.
âEmmerdale is a tiny village, everyone knows everyone. Donât tell me youâd forgotten about that. And well she works in me mumâs pub.â
âWell, I havenât really been back since I was 21 and then before that I hadnât been back since I was 14,â Robert shrugged.
He sees Vic give Aaron a donât ask look, which heâs grateful for. Though he assumed Aaron would be able to connect some of the dots after their talk about his parents.
âWait, so you couldnât come to opening night because my family was coming?â Aaron interrupted his train of thought.
âYeah, they should really get some more non-Dingle staff at the Woolie! I was stuck working the bar and kitchen on my own until Bob was done at the caf! Anyway, now that weâre all caught up, letâs hit the town eh.â
âVic, come on itâs the middle of the week, weâve got a full day of work tomorrow,â Robert groaned, his body was already starting to ache now that the adrenaline boost from the performance was wearing off.
âOh come on Robert! Itâs one night, Iâm sure youâll be alright you old sod,â Vic said grinning broadly at her brother. âYou coming with Aaron?â
âYeah alright then, donât want to be called old now do I? Is it okay if I ask Adam along as well?â
âSure, the more the merrier. See Robert, Aaronâs coming.â
âOkay, okay, stop pestering me already,â Robert whined, but a smile starts pulling at his lips.
---
They had found their way to a pub not that far from the theatre, none of them feeling up to getting a taxi somewhere further away. The pubâs bustling around them, but not over crowded. It reminds Aaron of the Woolpack in a way, some obvious regulars are propped up at the bar. The booths filled with people nursing pints, some shoving handfuls of prawn cocktail crisps into their mouths as they chat amicably. Thereâs a more even mix of regulars and outsiders than there ever is in the Woolpack, but then they are in London after all. A young couple sits in the booth next to them, speaking a language he canât really make out; a group of men with American accents are laughing loudly over at the booth in the corner, clearly having already downed a few. But itâs nice, easy, letting his sore muscles relax in the worn down leather from the booth they had managed to snag.
Adam and Vic had hit it off pretty quick and were now lost in their own world, leaving Aaron and Robert to entertain themselves.
âSo why didnât you tell me about her before?â Aaron asked.
âWell, I told you I had a sister didnât I. Didnât really think youâd know her, so why bother? And you never asked either,â Robert shrugged.
âFair. Whyâd you tell me about her coming today though?â
âEver heard of making conversation, you know what weâre doing now,â Robert grinned. âNah, I told you she couldnât come opening night didnât I, so I guess I wanted to tell you. Wanted to tell someone and as you may have noticed I donât really have any other friends here yet. Not in the company at least and most of my old friends have moved to other places by now.â Robert seemed to hesitated slightly on the word friend, was that what they were?
âRight, so I was your only option?â
âWell, we had at least talked before,â Robert smirked, insinuation clear.
Aaron blushed slightly, mind all too eager to bring what had happened in the rehearsal room a few days ago back up to the forefront of his mind. He tried to ignore the insinuation though, in favour of questioning Robert some more; he wanted to find out more about him. Â
âSo, whyâd you come back to London if most of your friends have gone?â
âLike I said, London is my home. I guess Iâm just a sentimental fool like thatâŠâ Robert said wistfully.
âEmmerdale not home to you anymore then?â Â Â Â
Robert just shook his head. âAs I mentioned before, I havenât been back there in 10 years. And that was only for two days, I hadnât been back for 7 years before that.â Robert said, still avoiding the reason why he hadnât been back there in so long. âIt is to you?â
Aaron thought about that for a while. His family was back in Emmerdale, but it hadnât really been his real home in a long time. Which is what he told Robert. The other man nodded.
âSo, you go back there often?â Robert asked, turning the questions back on him.
âHmm, not as often as I like. My mum comes down to London often enough, but I still miss her a lot. And the rest of âem only come down here every so often, opening nights mostly. So whenever I get the chance to make the trip up there I do. Wouldnât dream of living back there full time though, much prefer the city life.â
âNo gossiping old ladies, amiright,â Robert chuckled.
---
They talked some more about Emmerdale, but eventually the conversation diverged to other topics. They didnât even talk about ballet, the conversation flowing easily without the need to fall back on that common ground.
Aaron saw Robert trying to stifle a yawn; feeling a yawn of his own start in response. He glanced over at the clock by the bar, it was almost midnight, the pub would be closing soon; it already being open later than most.
âWe should probably head home, about to get kicked out anyway,â Aaron said. They were the only people left apart from the lone stranger sat at the bar that had just downed the last of his pint, and the bartender who was beginning to give them more and more dirty looks, clearly eager to close up.
âYeah, letâs go. We can walk together, what way is your place?â Victoria asked.
Aaron told her which street him and Adam lived on and they found out that they lived only a few streets away from Robert, so they could walk a fair bit together.
Adam and Victoria walked a few steps in front of them, still chatting along easily even though they hadnât stopped to catch their breath all night. Robert and him walked together quietly, happy to let the noises of the city be their soundtrack. Their shoulders brushed lightly every so often with how close they had ended up walking, sending a shiver down his spine every time. He could see his and Adamâs house dooming up all too soon and found himself slowing down his steps, not ready to say goodbye to Robert yet. They had both opened up more in the few hours in that pub than they had in the almost 2 months that they had been working together and he couldnât help but want to know more.
âOi Aaron lad, you coming or what?â Adam called out to them, already at their front door.
âWell this is meâŠâ Aaron murmured.
âRight. See you tomorrow then?â Robert said softly, eyes roaming over Aaronâs face as if to take him in just once more. His hair was all floppy, falling over his forehead, having dried naturally after his post show shower; cheeks slightly red from the cold wind. He looked slightly sleepy and so much younger, and it made Aaron feel all soft inside. Â
âYeah,â he sighed. And then all of a sudden lips were pressing against his cheek, gone all too soon again, but they left a his cheek tingling. A slight blush creeped up his neck as Robert hurried away, grabbing his sisters hand as if to get away as quickly as possible.
âMate, youâve got it bad,â Adam said all of a sudden, he hadnât even notices his best friend walking up to him.
âShut up,â Aaron huffed, quickly drawing the hand that was pressed against his cheek away, when had that happened?
