Farmers are looking to the skies this weekend in the hope that predicted rain arrives in large amounts. Among them is Rob Williams of Coona Valley Contractors (left), who was the top bidder for a 7000 litre water cartage tank auctioned at Commonwealth Bank AgQuip today to benefit the CWA Drought Relief Campaign. Donated by Singleton-based Rapid Spray, the tank was sold for $3,100 at the site this morning (Thursday), the final day of AgQuip. Rob Williams says charities like the CWA are doing a great job as the whole community is effected by the drought, and the tank will have a lot work but their other contracting work has dried up. NSW Minister for Primary Industry, Niall Blair, has encouraged farmers to visit the various NSW Government services at Commonwealth Bank AgQuip, such as the Rural Assistance Authority, Local Land Services, and Department of Primary Industry. Spending day one at the event, the Minister also sought information from farmers as to the effectiveness of current drought programs and says this is important to use in future planning and to make sure the programs are working. Hoping the rain predictions for this weekend are fulfilled, but in between, one of Australia's largest farm field days will be run. The 28km of roads on the site are watered, the bales are unloaded for seating, and the new AgQuip Seminar room is ready for three days of presentations, ranging from Destination NSW Tourism (Tuesday morning) to Rural Mental Health. Exhibitors are also pledging to donate their hay bales at the end of the field day to the Buy A Bale program to support local farmers. The crane is heading home after a busy week and the last exhibitors are finishing off their sites for opening day, Tuesday 9am at Commonwealth Bank AgQuip 2018, the 46th annual event showcasing the latest in agricultural developments and technology. Gates open 9-5 Tuesday and Wednesday and 9-4 Thursday. Despite the very dry conditions, the site is full and worth a day off the farm or out of town to visit one of the biggest farm field days in the world, just west of Gunnedah, NSW.
