This might just be me, but I feel like there are some similarities between Fire Punch and I Saw the TV Glow.
I think the way that they portray media and transness is actually quite similar. In Fire Punch, societies are unknowingly built on the media of the past. Surya's driving motivation is to continue a series of media, to finally see how it ends. Agni is shaped into a god in the image of those within the movies. He is then immortalized in that film forever, even when he cannot remember. Media has become reality, and people have forgotten that.
This feels similar to how Owen, and especially Maddy, experience the Pink Opaque. In the same way that Agni is, they are living characters from the screen. While Owen and Maddy are characters from another plane trapped in ours, Agni is forced to build his identity around his character onscreen. In both, cinema is more "real" than reality. And like Surya, Maddy tries to bring someone into a self-sacrificial situation in order to continue watching (living) a piece of media. Media transcends life.
Togata was the character I began this comparison around. Like Tara and Isabel, he lives his life in the world on the other side of the screen. His regeneration forces him to live in a body that is not his, and he does not want anyone to know his true identity. He runs away when Agni finds out. Just like how Isabel flees from Tara after being told the truth about their lives. Neither of them feel able to change; they are stuck, and being reminded of that is the most terrifying thing of all. It's easier to pretend, to play a character, than accept reality.
We go to the cinema when we die. We watch our lives play out in front of us. We see our other selves, our true selves, die on the other side of the screen. And we watch. We watch them cut out our heart. Maybe in the next life we'll get it right.
Or maybe we'll sit under the stars late at night, preparing to crush ourselves under layers of earth. At least we're no longer burning alive.
