spammed my gm about my AoE character cos i got bored writing my essay. my guy is called john keel (obvs a fake name, and yes it is pronounced kill) - hes a LE life oracle orc.
Look, ok. It's not like Keel would stab a child for shits and giggles. He's not that kind of evil - it's more like...
Keel is loyal to the Gods, and to the orc tribe - loyal to orcs as a whole, in fact - but he has this awful tendency of asking questions. Questions like, "Where did these fancy new goblets come from?", "What happened to the extra coin that was for rebuilding the temple?", and "Who killed that priest who had some fancy goblets and was in charge of rebuilding the temple?".
The thing is, Keel's blessed by the Godclaw themselves; he bleeds life into the world. Keel is a gateway between the Godclaw and their followers. Though he's still untrained and pretty weak, well. You can't kill someone like that and not have a zealous rebellion on your hands.
But... if, say, an enemy of the orc tribes - like, Absalom and it's host of heathen scum - were to murder a loyal, blessed follower... You'd be killing two birds with one stone that way.
So Keel was specially selected to, as Keel was told, "secure information in advance of an invasion". He had nothing with him and no idea of where he was headed until the orcs who met him at the edges of Absalom assigned him a new identity. He had time to blink before they melted back into the darkness.
Keel suspects either he is being shown the barbarian practices of the heretics in Absalom as a punishment to get him back in line, or else he's going to be matyred here. And look, he tried to be a good little Godclaw orc and he has been collecting information! He knows that there's no easy way back to the tribe unless he's going home in a casket. And the heathens around him will surely murder him if they realise he is an enemy and a follower of the Godclaw. His goal then is clear - learn his lesson and do whatever it takes to be invited back home.
It's just that Keel, maybe, might be a wee bit distracted...
It's all so, so vibrant, so alive! So different from home; the gods here are different! And yes, yes there is a huge part of him that balks at these paltry imaginings of the true Gods. Though there's that small questioning part of him that's also going "hmm".
Because there's got to be a reason this society hasn't crumbled to the orcs; there has to be something that keeps this life going - there's an even deeper set of rules. Behind the Absalom gods, behind the Godclaw, maybe there's something deeper. If there is, then surely it's his duty to find it? As he's seen in his short time as part of the Post Guard - there's something around every corner, and with this Radiant Festival coming up...!
"Life, rebirth and glory," someone says excitedly in the Guardhouse. Keel, with his back to the rest of them, seizes up at the words. He actively relaxes, pretends to be brushing down his uniform whilst the group behind him continue to gossip. "And this year, this year it's gonna be even bigger!"
"I hate it - fucking tourists," this is said by a gruff voice, and punctuated with a slam of the locker door. "Every year the streets are swarming with them."
"Yeah but this year is gonna be different!" The first one lowers his voice. Keel gives in to curiosity and finally turns to face the group. The speaker - one of the many recruits, Daley Pickett, is red-faced and beaming. Keel likes the guy; Daley has a knack for ferreting out the truth and an even better knack for sharing these truths out.
"I've heard they're opening up one of the old districts to make room for the Festival. And," he pauses so the rustling whispers around him fall silent again. "And they're looking to form a new watch for the Fesitval. Word is, there's a list of names going round the guards. I heard, Captain Fowler's getting together some names to 'volunteer'."
The room explodes with talk. Daley leans back, winks at Keel when they make eye-contact, and then makes his way out of the noise. Standing still, Keel repeats the same words that he's been hearing all month. "Life, rebirth and glory."
He feels a twinge over his heart where these same words writ into his skin. Keel grins. For he is but a loyal follower, and he will go where the Godclaw guides him. Keel spins back to his uniform and plucks his badge off, then pushes his way through the group of still-shouting guards, towards Captain Fowler's office.
(Above, one illuminous being leans over to another. The first is vaguely dwarven, his face carved from iron and gold and decorated in mail armor made from spun-orichalcum. The second looks as still as an untouched lake, face cool with a distant gaze in his eyes.
Torag, in his godly wisdom, says in a voice of a thousand earthquakes: "bLeSsEd By ThE gOdClAw." He shakes his head in disbelief. "We get drunk one time, and a thousand years later some cursed idiot thinks he's a prophet. Aye, a blessed fool to believe that old tale" He tries to nudge the other being who somehow is now just out if reach of his elbow, seemingly without moving. "Next time, don't let the Lantern King gatecrash, for fuck's sake."
Irori is silent, though the slight downward twitch of his eyebrow is enough for Torag to laugh like a thunderclap over the skies of Absalom.)

honestly i can't imagine an agents of edgewatch party that DOESN'T include a secret vigilante member. how do you play without that sort of zest going on. the hangman vigilante archetype was practically MADE for this exact scenario.
