Anime only watchers and people who aren't caught up with the Manga, BEWARE... Cuz I'm about to discuss Spy X Family Mission 85... You have been warned...! 👌
[SPOILERS AHEAD FROM THIS POINT ON]
HOLY FREAKING SHIT!!😵 I AM SO GODDAMN SPEECHLESS RIGHT NOW...!!! 😱
(Endo, how do keep doing this to me...!?)
This chapter was absolutely NUTS, so talk about it shall we...? 👍
Okay, so... When I first opened up this chapter, my dumb ass thought that this was Twilight being woken up by Fiona...: 😅
Obviously it was Yuri, but I still got a little worried that Endo was gonna skip Fiona and Wheeler's confrontation...! 😤
Anyway, it turns out that the female SSS officer that we saw at beginning of this arc is the one that wakes up Yuri, and her name is Chole...!! (Which honestly makes me laugh because Scarface and Agent Mustache have been in the series for a way longer time than Chole has, AND WE STILL DON'T KNOW THEIR NAMES!! 😵 Endo, you nut... 😌)
Then, after Scarface tells Yuri to get some medical treatment and for Chole to help him to get there, Yuri starts to wonder to himself about Twilight, and...:
...HE HASN'T FULLY FIGURED IT OUT YET! 😅 Which tells me that Yuri loves doesn't suspect his brother-in-law and would probably have to see that Loid is injured the same way as Twilight before he jumps to that conclusion...!! 😖
Moving on, we cut back to where Wheeler, Nightfall and Twilight are, and things couldn't be more intense...!!
Wheeler has Twilight hostage and threatens to kill him like he did for that other agent back in Mission 84, but unlike last time...
...Nightfall does in fact, drop her weapon... And because of that, Wheeler figures that she must care for Twilight, so tells her THIS:
Nightfall then rushes towards Wheeler, and before he could properly react...
NIGHTFALL KNOCKS WHEELER DOWN!! 😵
(Breaking her arm in the process...!! 😰)
And y'know what, I'm starting to get the impression that Endo might have a thing for women that can kick his ass...!! 😏 (Just like Twilight...!) 😎👍
Sorry, I got a little off topic there...! 😅 What was I saying before, oh right...! *Ahem...!*
NIGHTFALL IS FREAKING TERRIFYING...!! 😱
And after she absolutely destoryed her arm (and Wheeler's face), she tells Wheeler that he's weak because...:
Nightfall proceeds to KICK THINE ASS of Wheeler, breaking her other arm and one of her legs in the process...!! 😱 This causes Wheeler to think that all he needs to do is get his distance from her, but before he could, Nightfall uses one of her broken arms to do THIS to Wheeler...:
Thus ending the chapter... AND WHAT ANOTHER AMAZING CHAPTER THIS WAS!! 😍 This whole arc ain't even over yet and it has already become...
MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE ARC IN ALL OF SPY X FAMILY!! 😆
And at this point, I honestly don't care how good or bad the ending of this arc is gonna be because THIS ARC HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT ABSOLUTE HYPE THROUGHOUT!! 😁
Speaking of the end, could we be reaching the end of this arc in the next chapter or so?And if we are, what's gonna happen next? 🤔I don't think that Yuri will be hospitalized, especially after seeing how he was doing in the beginning of this chapter...! But, I still most definitely believe that Twilight will be in the hospital, and I hope that Yor finds out about it...! 💔
Anyway, that's all I gotta say about Mission 85, and like always, I can't wait for the next chapter!! 😆 So until next Mission... Take care, be safe out there, and be kind to one another...!! 💗 SEE Y'ALL LATER!! 👋😊

(sxf manga spoiler) nobody asked and im probably
stating the obvious here but since this current arc started ive had a lot of thoughts about the possibility of yuri figuring out that loid is twilight. and since today im blessed with the rare ability to form coherent thoughts, ill be dumping them here.
while i agree that yuri being the first to find out about loid's secret identity would lead to the juiciest plot development, i dont think yuri would be connecting the dots anytime soon, as evident in the latest chapter:
concussion or not, loid and twilight pose as opposite images in yuri's head. while yuri may hate twilight's guts (thanks to sss conditioning), he considers twilight as something "great". twilight is this very competent spy whos been operating right under their nose, stealing information and undermining ostania's security for (what i assume) quite some time now. and he keeps evading capture, even when he's right in front of them, like in the doggy crisis arc before. the entire sss seem to acknowledge how great of a spy twilight is and why capturing him is a matter of utmost importance.
on the other hand, yuri hates loid forger because he's conviced that loid is an incompetent, lying, and cheating man who is inferior and undeserving of his sister. and while yuri has made a comment about loid being a spy to his superior before, i believe this is some kind of an offhand comment in a desperate attempt to find a reason to get the man who "stole" his sister out of the picture.
i think these opposing impressions would simply hinder yuri from superimposing twilight's legendary reputation onto the "loser" loid forger (not soon anyway). even if he were to notice loid's wounds from their fight, it would go over his head as something like "stupid loi-loi. of course he's an incompetent doctor, he doesnt deserve my sister. i should have him arrested."
it will, however, be something in the back of his mind, something he's not conscious of. but later on in the story progression, yuri's memory of how twilight chose to mimic him, twilight not finishing him off, and loid's wounds might be somehing that will finally allow the pieces to click together, and the suspicion and investigation begins. (hopefully it'll also kickstart his character development and freedom from sss brainwashing because, turns out, his brother-in-law is not that bad!)
but in the near future after this arc (and it better ends with yor successfully giving loid that welcome home kiss), i think loid forger will be somewhere in the bottom of yuri's list of "suspicious people around me who might be twilight" (somehow anya would be higher on that list than loid).
anyways, thank you for attending my ramblings and it will sure be funny if my thoughts turn out completely wrong
heres a peanut for a treat 🥜

Wow, I thought we would just continue to see Wheeler and Nightfall from the beginning, but no, we get to see Yuri first.
So, Chloe is the SSS girl's name, huh? It's funny how Yuri had thought of her as Yor, lol.
Anyways, they finally just went out from the sewer. Now I wonder if there will be more interactions between Yuri and Chloe later in the next few chapters...
Now back to Wheeler vs Nightfall. Wheeler threatened Nightfall to drop her gun, but even then Nightfall could manage to punch him! One of her arms was dislocated but she just didn't care!
However, this chapter is great, and I can feel that the next one will conclude the fight between Wheeler and Nightfall (even though I'm still not sure if the one who just recently jumped into the sewer is the WISE agent in disguise or the real Gascoigne... Let's just hope it's the WISE agent so this arc will be over soon). I still hope to see Twilight make it out alive so Loid can get a welcome home kiss from Yor and Anya's story from the zoo.

did the meme with my favorite costumed weirdo an my favorite non-costumed weirdo.
the dialogue actually makes sense too cuz Mulder would be annoying like that after learning about Batman's code.
i have some ideas for a few different ones i think i'll do later(he says, lying. knowin he'll probably never do it)
also click here to read about the meme's origin an the original image's artist
ID/image description: ink drawing of Agent Mulder from the X-Files and Batman, from the chest up standing next to each other, drawn in a classic comic book-y style. Mulder has an annoying smirk on his face and a speech bubble reading 'i think we're gonna have to kill this guy,Batman'. Batman has one that reads his signature 'hnh' and he has a characteristically annoyed frown. he is wrapped in his cape. both have a moderate light source hitting their right side. end description.

How does the Agent 24 end up happening in your AU? (aka: how do 3 and 8 get together in this AU?)
they meet again later(like late teens/early adults), Tsunami(whose name wouldn't be that here but w/e) promises to help Ivory with something, romance ensues
it's basically the generic, "forbidden love" thing, since both of their families hate each other(like Romeo and Juliet, but without... the ending :)
they decide to keep meeting in secret(even when both of them are found out), despite it being a little tricky because Ivory can't be fully out of the water for too long
there's a little more to it than that(such as why they hate each other), but I'd have to explain some more stuff related to my interpretation of cecaelia and general worldbuilding that hasn't quite fully cooked yet
#most of it's *there* but idk if i'm 100% satisfied with it yet y'know?#i'm like 85% good w/ it tho#eclipse's ask box#eclipse's oc lore#agent 24 mermaid au#tsunami(mermaid au)#ivory(mermaid au)#there are like 20 tiny Callies running around my desktop rn it's legit getting hard to do anything lmao

title: feelings word count: ~2400 ships: six/holiday summary: Six can't stop thinking about Holiday. ao3 link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/51082099
It was those moments where she wasn’t trying - where she wasn’t doing anything particularly impressive or amazing - that Six felt himself drawn to her the most. Seeing his coworker, his partner, his friend - just sitting on a bench and going over her notes or her schedule or whatever the hell she was reading…she was mesmerizing.
Six was embarrassed at first, by how much he enjoyed watching her. Somehow it felt like he was disrespecting her or mistreating her just by having such a significant attachment to her so quickly. But he gradually started to understand that she was simply…magnetic.
He was attracted to her immediately when he lost his memories, and then learned to lighten up at her discomfort. But the months they spent together after Rex’s disappearance just enhanced his already growing feelings.
The sixth deadliest man in the world wasn’t supposed to develop feelings like that.
But Rebecca Holiday had that effect on people. He wondered sometimes if he was one of many to fall for her, or if he was just lucky enough to know her better than most.
He’d known her for over a year, by her side almost the entire time, and wondered how his older self - the previous version of Six, the one that had the chance to introduce himself to her for the very first time - was able to work with her for so long without breaking. In less than a year, he’d fallen for her so hard that he felt almost spellbound.
He felt an urge to say or do something about it, especially knowing that she had some sort of feelings for him as well - but instead he continued to sit still.
The risk was palpable. Though she had feelings for him, Six didn’t know the extent of it and he didn’t know if that meant she actually wanted to be with him. Maybe she wanted to be with the old version of him, or maybe she was just lonely and he was there. And Six didn’t want to misinterpret or pressure her when he wasn’t sure what their status was. It’d taken him a long time to understand his own feelings, he couldn’t imagine how complicated it was for her.
Not that she seemed to spend much time thinking about it. Six’s body was always busy - he did as many odd jobs as he could over the past year to keep them afloat while living at The Plant. But the jobs were often tedious or dull and his mind would wander. They’d wander onto Rex’s situation, or Knight’s secrecy, and then they’d wander onto Holiday and from there, he’d be stuck.
Holiday’s mind was always busy. She was always working on something, something to find or track Rex, then working on the EVO cure same as always, working on trying to extract all nanites from a living being without hurting them, working on ways to imitate Rex’s powers so the kid could live a normal teenage life. She never stopped. So Six was under the impression that she didn’t spend a lot of her limited free time thinking about him or them and it’d be narcissistic of him to assume she’d made up her mind.
Still…he was only human. And he was in love with her. And she was always there.
Sometimes he didn’t want to keep his mouth shut anymore. Sometimes he just wanted to put it all out there - let her deal with his feelings instead of him having to sit and wallow in them. But he wasn’t sure if that was unfair to her or not.
The insecurity of everything between them was the primary agent against telling her how he felt.
He just wasn’t sure what was fair. Their current situation didn’t seem fair for either of them, but he wasn’t sure if there was a simple way to keep them on even ground. He didn’t want to have any power over her, but he also didn’t like the power she inadvertently had over him.
She didn’t even have to do anything, and he’d be struck by her all the same.
At the moment, she was sitting on a bench in her lab, small work table in front of her. She was holding a tablet and using her pointer finger to scroll and click and organize and whatever else she was doing, and there were loose strands of hair falling from her bun that caught Six’s gaze. He was also sitting on the bench, though not too close to her, and leaning his arms against his knees.
“Caesar’s bringing a whole big container of molecular scanners, so we’re probably covered there…”
He listened closely while she mumbled - going through the list of things she needed for her upcoming trip. Her upcoming trip with Caesar, which Six thought was an insane concept, but Caesar was still partially working for Providence while they were in the transitory stage of battling EVOs to focusing on safe nanite removal and destruction without reactivation.
Six wasn’t coming along since he and Rex had another mission to attend to, so he was sitting with Holiday in an attempt to soak up as much of her presence as possible before going a week without seeing her. As pathetic as that thought made him feel, Six did not like going without seeing her for more than a day or two. It made him uncomfortable. He got uncharacteristically worried. And she was not good at communicating her status when she was busy working, which didn’t help.
He stayed silent as she mumbled other list items. She wasn’t really talking to him anyway, she was just talking out loud to fill the silent lab. With the threat of EVOs all-but-neutralized, Providence funding had decreased significantly and there were a lot less scientists and grunts running around to help Dr. Holiday with her work. He wondered sometimes if she missed her big lab crew or if she’d gotten used to working alone after all their time at The Plant.
“Probably won’t be leaving the base much, so I don’t really need to bring a big coat…”
Six leaned back, letting his head gently rest against the wall behind him, and shoved his hands into his pockets. He glanced at Holiday’s profile out of the corner of his eye - didn’t want to be too obvious about staring at her. Though she had every reason to assume he was watching her. Why else would he be in the room if not to interact with her?
She was scrolling, focused on another device or piece of clothing she needed to bring with, when Six found himself captivated once again. Some of the hair that was sticking out of her bun fell out completely and started hanging there along the side of her neck. His eyes were drawn to it and he didn’t feel like being subtle anymore - Six turned his head completely and watched her while she spoke.
“...yeah, probably not. I don’t think that’ll be necessary. What do you think, Six?”
His eyes stayed trained on her lips while she spoke - Holiday didn’t look at him when she asked her question, almost like she didn’t realize she’d asked it. Her tongue poked out to moisten her lips for a brief moment, and Six felt his resolve melting.
“I think…I have feelings for you,” he said suddenly.
“Hm?” was Holiday’s only response as she continued to scroll on the tablet. She turned slightly towards him, though her gaze stayed trained on the device in her hands. “What’s up?”
Six knew he wasn’t thinking straight in that moment. The combination of her intoxicating presence combined with the knowledge that he wouldn’t see her for at least a week was short-circuiting his brain. Despite the fact that she wasn’t really paying attention to him and probably still wouldn’t after he responded again, Six knew he wasn’t going to stop.
“I’m in love with you.”
Her gaze wavered. She blinked down at the tablet, then glared at the screen, looking immensely confused. Then she whipped her head towards him and stared at Six with those beautiful green eyes that always managed to catch him off-guard. “What…huh? What?”
It wasn’t exactly a positive response. But he’d made his bed and now he had no choice but to lie in it. With that thought, however, Six didn’t plan on staying in the room and embarrassing himself further. “Just thought you should know,” he mumbled as he stood up and walked to the door.
There were several moments where the only sound in that lab was his light footsteps. Holiday had been stunned speechless and his ears were filled with the drum beats of his pounding heart. There was no need to stay behind any longer, he’d said what he said. No taking it back.
The ball was in her court.
“Wh-wait, Six, where are you-?!”
Her heels clacked loudly against the tiled floor as she ran over and grabbed his hand - wrapping her fingers around his wrist and palm. There was an uneven sound to her breathing that caught Six’s ears.
He turned slightly towards her and was surprised (though he shouldn’t have been, he really shouldn’t have been) to see a deep blush across her cheeks. She was frowning and staring up at him almost pleadingly.
“Is that…is that it? You’re just going to say that and walk away?”
Six turned more, feeling his hand slide naturally into hers and deciding not to do anything about that. “I didn’t want to bother you anymore before you leave.”
“Bother?” She looked absolutely baffled by his response. “Six, you’re not…you couldn’t bother me. But why the hell are you telling me this now?”
His heart was beating exceptionally fast and it was making his chest hurt. Six didn’t know if honesty was the cure, but so far it seemed to be making Holiday happy, at least. He figured it was worth a shot to continue. “I wanted to,” was the simplest answer he could give her.
He stared down at her while she stared up at him - her eyes widened slightly at his words and the blush on her face deepened. Then she shyly glanced downward, distinctly staring at his lips - then drew her gaze away to the floor, then back up at his eyes.
And to the floor again.
Shy wasn’t a word he’d ever thought would describe Dr. Rebecca Holiday. She usually seemed very competent and confident, though he supposed he just hadn’t seen her in a situation where it’d make sense to be shy. Not since they were infiltrated by Scarecrow, though that was a very different scenario. Not really comparable to where they were now.
The smarter part of his brain understood her signals. He understood completely that she wanted to kiss him, but more than that - she wanted him to kiss her. And Six wanted to kiss her, he really did. But the idea of closing the space between them and altering their relationship forever (even moreso than his confession did) made it hard for him to move his hands. He wanted her. Of course he wanted her. But being with her meant it’d be that much easier to lose her and he wouldn’t be able to stand that.
Seconds flew by while they stood next to each other, both trying to figure out the next move. And each of those seconds felt like ten minutes, and it was both agonizing and exhilarating trying to figure out who’d go for it.
Holiday closed her eyes and took a deep breath, squeezing Six’s hand with her own. He couldn’t tell exactly what she was going to do or say, though he had a feeling she’d berate him for not taking the initiative and kissing her while the moment was right.
Instead of that, though, she suddenly grabbed his tie near the top and tugged on it, forcing his head down far enough for her to reach. And in that moment, as his lips crashed into hers, Six felt any fears about their relationship shedding away. He cupped her face with his free hand and deepened their kiss, desperately hoping she wouldn’t pull away. His heart had never felt so full as it did in that moment and he did not want it to end.
She removed her hand from his and reached both hands up to his lapels, pulling him as close to her as possible while their lips moved against each other. Six then wrapped his newly freed hand around her waist and held her against him, trying not to get distracted by thoughts of where this moment could lead.
Just as that thought came to his mind, Holiday pulled away and plopped back down onto her feet - their height difference had never been more noticeable to him. He watched her as she sighed dreamily and lightly patted his chest.
“Okay. Okay, good,” she said thoughtfully, breaking the silence. Then she pulled away further, headed back to the tablet she left on the table. “I have to finish getting ready, but we’re going to talk about this when I get back, alright?”
Six stared at her, still mesmerized.
He couldn’t believe he’d ever thought that letting her know how he felt would give him power over her. Clearly, he could not have been more wrong - she had every upper hand now, even more than she did before.
Holiday grabbed her tablet and walked back towards him, holding it against her chest. She paused before the door opened and smiled up at him, tugging a bit of hair behind her ear. “I’m really glad you said something, Six.”
“Me, too.” And he meant it.
Her smile looked positively impish for just a moment and then suddenly she was out the door, leaving Six alone with his foolish, idiotic thoughts. He kept wanting to insult himself - kept trying to understand exactly what was going through his head that led him to say such a thing. But he also didn’t really care anymore. Holiday said they’d talk when she got back, and that meant they were going to talk.
She hadn’t even left yet, and he was already waiting for her to get back.
He shoved his hands into his pockets again and glanced around the lab. It all just made him think about her more, so he closed his eyes, sighed, and headed out the door. He needed to burn off some adrenaline.

A continuation on my post about unloved foods, specifically this is my in-depth defense of root beer.
Root Beer isn't inherently gross, it's just one of those weird local flavors that's off-putting to people who didn't grow up with it. We all like different things and also we all tend to like flavors that are similar to what we grew up with. That's okay! But honestly root beer is pretty unique and, in my opinion, delicious.
One of the main complaints against root beer is that it tastes like medicine. Funnily enough, it was originally marketed as medicinal! This is true for most OG sodas actually. Pretty much as soon as carbonated water was invented, people were drinking it to soothe various ailments. A lot of the original soft drinks were actually invented by pharmacists. I just think that root beer is especially cool because the main flavor came from the root bark of sassafras, a common North American shrub. Because it's so widespread and aromatic, all parts of the sassafras plant have been used in food and medicine by many different Native American tribes throughout history and was subsequently picked up and used by European colonists. In the 1960s, some studies indicated that that safrole oil, which is produced by the plant, can cause liver damage. Whether or not this would actually remain true after it had been boiled and added to root beer is unclear, but it was really easy to replicate the flavor, so the sassafras in commercial root beer these days is artificial. Another fun fact about safrole is that it's a precursor in the synthesis of MDMA. None of this information has stopped my childhood habit of eating sassfras leaves right off the shrub whenever I walk past it on a hike. I'm like 85% sure it's safe and also mmmm yummy leafs go crunch.
Another root beer complaint is that it tastes like toothpaste. I think this is probably because another key flavor in most root beer recipes is wintergreen. I'm assuming that the people who think this are the same people who think mint chocolate chip ice cream tastes like toothpaste. I can understand and even respect that some people don't like mint and associate it only with brushing their teeth, but like. Mint is a pretty common flavor. I mean I think it's safe to say that humans have been eating mint flavored stuff for longer than toothpaste has existed... anyway!
Other common flavors in root beer (real or artificial) are caramel, vanilla, black cherry bark, sarsaparilla root, ginger, and many more! There's not one official recipe, and root beer enthusiasts often have strong opinions about different brands. Some root beer is sharper, with more strong aromatic flavors, and others are mild and creamier.
Another thing I think is cool about root beer is that it's foamier than most sodas. This was originally because sassafras is a natural surfactant (and why sassafras is also a common thickening agent in Louisiana Creole cooking.) These days, other plant starches or similar ingredients are added to keep the distinctive foam. Root beer foam > all other soft drink foams. That's why root beer floats kick more ass than like, coke floats.
If you've never had root beer before, imagine if a sweetened herbal tea was turned into a soda, because that's basically what it is. If your first response to that is a cringe, fair enough. That's why lots of people don't like it. If your first response to that is "interesting... I might actually like it, though" then I encourage you to track down a can of root beer today, hard as that might be outside the US and Canada. Next time you see an "ew, root beer tastes like medicine/tooth paste" take, know that there's a reason for that, but also the same could be said for literally any herbal or minty food/drink.
My final take on root beer is that it would be the soda of choice for gnomes. Thank you and good night.

Happy Halloween, everyone!
I've got some good news - I've finished tallying up the results of the favourite anime survey and can now, finally, reveal what Tumblr's favourite anime actually are. To start with, I'd like to thank everyone who responded - yes, all 1172 (wow!) of you - and to apologise for he delay in actually getting these results out. For anyone who needs a reminder, these results are based on how many points each anime received - a first place ranking was worth five points, a second or third place ranking was worth four, a fourth or fifth place ranking was worth three, a sixth-tenth place ranking was worth two, and a eleventh-twentieth place ranking was worth one. When multiple anime had the same number of points, the anime with the most first-place votes was placed higher. The results are below the read more right here - I hope you enjoy reading!
100. Yona of the Dawn - 82 points
99. Devilman Crybaby - 83 points

"The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized a rule Tuesday [April 9, 2024] that will require 218 chemical plants to reduce toxic and carcinogenic airborne pollutants, aiming to reduce the number of people with elevated cancer risk by 96% nationwide.
The rulings principally address chloroprene: used to make rubber products, and ethylene oxide, used primarily for sterilizing medical supplies. Long-term exposure to these chemicals and their manufacturing have been identified as possible carcinogens, or cancer-causing agents.
According to a report in the Washington Post, this can include lymphoma, leukemia, breast cancer, and liver cancer.
Across a strip of Louisiana and Texas where half of the 218 chemical manufacturing facilities set to be affected by the new regulations are located, cancer rates of these kinds are substantially higher than national averages, leading it to be colloquially called “Cancer Alley.”
EPA Administrator Michael Regan visited Cancer Alley during the open-comment period of the proposed ruling, and said that across the 85 miles dotted with communities, he failed to meet a single person who didn’t know a loved one or friend who had either developed cancer, died of it, or knew someone who had.
Once implemented, the ruling will reduce more than 6,200 tons of toxic air pollution each year, according to the Post."

According to documents obtained by Grist and Type Investigations through a Freedom of Information Act request, the FBI’s Minneapolis office opened a counterterrorism assessment in February 2012, focusing on actions in South Dakota, that continued for at least a year and may have led to the opening of additional investigations. These documents reveal that the FBI was monitoring activists involved in the Keystone XL campaign about a year earlier than previously known. Their contents suggest that, long before the Keystone and Dakota Access pipelines became national flashpoints, the federal government was already developing a sweeping law enforcement strategy to counter any acts of civil disobedience aimed at preventing fossil fuel extraction. And young, Native activists were among its first targets. “The threat emerging … is evolving into one based on opposition to energy exploration related to any extractions from the earth, rather than merely targeting one project and/or one company,” the FBI noted in its description of the Wanblee blockade. The 15-page file, which is heavily redacted, also describes Native American groups as a potentially dangerous threat and likens them to “environmental extremists” whose actions, according to the FBI, could lead to violence. The FBI acknowledged that Native American groups were engaging in constitutionally protected activity, including attending public hearings, but emphasized that this sort of civic participation might spawn criminal activity. To back up its claims, the FBI cited a 2011 State Department hearing on the pipeline in Pierre, South Dakota, attended by a small group of Native activists. The FBI said the individuals were dressed in camouflage and had covered their faces with red bandanas, “train robber style.” According to the report, they were also carrying walking sticks and shaking sage, claiming to be “Wounded Knee Security of/for Mother Earth.” “The Bureau is uncertain how the NA group(s) will act initially or subsequently if the project is approved,” the agency wrote. The FBI also singled out the “Native Youth Movement,” which it described as a mix between a “radical militia and a survivalist group.” In doing so, it appeared to conflate a specific activist group originally founded in Canada in the 1990s with the broader array of young Native activists who opposed the pipeline decades later. Young activists would play an important role in the Keystone XL campaign and later on during protests against the Dakota Access pipeline at Standing Rock, but the movement had little in common with militias or survivalists, terms typically used to describe far-right groups or those seeking to disengage from society. The FBI declined to respond to questions for this story. In an emailed statement, a spokesperson for the Minneapolis field office said the agency does not typically comment on FOIA releases and “lets the information contained in the files speak for itself.”
[...]
Environmental activists and attorneys who reviewed the new documents told Grist and Type Investigations that law enforcement’s approach to the Keystone XL campaign looked like a template for the increasingly militarized response to subsequent environmental and social justice campaigns — from efforts to block the Dakota Access pipeline at Standing Rock to the ongoing protests against the police training center dubbed “Cop City” in Atlanta, Georgia, which would require razing at least 85 acres of urban forest. The FBI’s working thesis, outlined in the new documents, that “most environmental extremist groups” have historically moved from peaceful protest to violence has served as the basis for subsequent investigations. “It’s astonishing to me how such a broad concept basically paints every activist and protester as a future terrorist,” said Mike German, a former FBI special agent who is now a fellow at the nonprofit Brennan Center for Justice.
