Roger Crenshaw: The Dogs at Duskfall (18+): OUT NOW!
Written by R/L Monroe (@mortalityplays), illustrated by Taylor Titmouse
The brain is the biggest sexual organ in the human body--but lately Roger has been feeling understimulated. The frustrated folklorist can't seem to find himself an outlet, until a twilight encounter with a familiar stranger blurs the lines between fact and fantasy. Who is Special Agent Hooper? What is he hunting in the margins of Roger's dreams? And just what will it take to satisfy him?
This adventure takes place some ten years on in the wild life of Roger Crenshaw--folklorist, trans man, and lover of the unknown in the most literal sense. This story contains explicit sexual content and is intended for adult audiences only. Reading the previous works in the series is highly recommended.
Features rope bondage, sex for an audience, dom/sub dynamics, the incomprehensible beyond, and a lot of semantic debate.
23k words, 10 spot illustrations, 3 half page illustrations. Comes in DRM free PDF and EPUB formats, and includes a gallery ZIP of high-res illustrations and extra art.
You can read two more pages of the sample on the shop page!
Tumblr media
Don't forget about the original Roger Crenshaw books! Catch up on Roger's sexy adventures with a charming vampire professor, a gang of train robbing werewolves, and the ghost of an ambitious cultist!

May Prompts (27)
Day 26 here. Start at the beginning here. Day 28 here.
Jealous
He isn’t jealous.
If anything, he feels pity for Sherlock.
Unlike his brother—who was pre-occupied by getting home and ensuring John rest—he would rather get on with work. Not be distracted by sentiment.
Unlike his brother—who sat flush against John, practically snuggling, in the back seat of the town car—he prefers having the full passenger seat to himself. There’s more room when you’re alone.
Unlike his brother—who is now at home, probably suffering through tea and biscuits with the Watsons, Mrs. Hudson and Dr. Hooper—he is preparing to interrogate the man responsible for the chaos of the last week. Being productive.
He isn’t jealous.
He could easily hand off the interrogation of the constable, now identified as a Rhys Wright, to any of his agents. Hell, even the imbeciles at Scotland Yard could handle the blubbering mess. But, he promised Sherlock.
To most, it may appear as if his brother has learned to let go of his anger in situations like these. But, Sherlock has simply grown more strategic in channelling his anger and ceding control. And today, Sherlock is trusting him to ensure Mr. Wright is far from comfortable.
So, they made a deal. He will be locked in a room with Wright for the rest of the day. Then, he will ensure the man stays under the jurisdiction of MI5, with their … ahem … rough interrogation and incarceration techniques, for a bit longer. Only then will Wright be handed over to the Metropolitan Police, case wrapped up like a bow. Conviction guaranteed.
In return, Rosie and co. will join him for brunch and a trip on the Eye tomorrow.
He isn’t jealous.
And tomorrow night, he will arrange for movers. Because, unlike his brother, it appears that John is finally planning on actually saying something. The rest is inevitable. Maybe it always was.
He’s happy for his brother. Truly.
Anthea is being ridiculous. He isn’t jealous at all.

Read-Alike Friday: Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann
Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann
In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Indian Nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, the Osage rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe.
Then, one by one, they began to be killed off. One Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, watched as her family was murdered. Her older sister was shot. Her mother was then slowly poisoned. And it was just the beginning, as more Osage began to die under mysterious circumstances.
In this last remnant of the Wild West—where oilmen like J. P. Getty made their fortunes and where desperadoes such as Al Spencer, “the Phantom Terror,” roamed – virtually anyone who dared to investigate the killings were themselves murdered. As the death toll surpassed more than twenty-four Osage, the newly created F.B.I. took up the case, in what became one of the organization’s first major homicide investigations. But the bureau was then notoriously corrupt and initially bungled the case. Eventually the young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to try to unravel the mystery. White put together an undercover team, including one of the only Native American agents in the bureau. They infiltrated the region, struggling to adopt the latest modern techniques of detection. Together with the Osage they began to expose one of the most sinister conspiracies in American history.
Covered with Night by Nicole Eustace
The Pulitzer Prize-winning history that transforms a single event in 1722 into an unparalleled portrait of early America.
In the winter of 1722, on the eve of a major conference between the Five Nations of the Haudenosaunee (also known as the Iroquois) and Anglo-American colonists, a pair of colonial fur traders brutally assaulted a Seneca hunter near Conestoga, Pennsylvania. Though virtually forgotten today, the crime ignited a contest between Native American forms of justice―rooted in community, forgiveness, and reparations―and the colonial ideology of harsh reprisal that called for the accused killers to be executed if found guilty.
In Covered with Night, historian Nicole Eustace reconstructs the attack and its aftermath, introducing a group of unforgettable individuals―from the slain man’s resilient widow to an Indigenous diplomat known as “Captain Civility” to the scheming governor of Pennsylvania―as she narrates a remarkable series of criminal investigations and cross-cultural negotiations. Taking its title from a Haudenosaunee metaphor for mourning, Covered with Night ultimately urges us to consider Indigenous approaches to grief and condolence, rupture and repair, as we seek new avenues of justice in our own era.
Return to Uluru by Mark McKenna
A killing. A hidden history. A story that goes to the heart of the nation.
When Mark McKenna set out to write a history of the centre of Australia, he had no idea what he would discover. One event in 1934 – the shooting at Uluru of Aboriginal man Yokununna by white policeman Bill McKinnon, and subsequent Commonwealth inquiry – stood out as a mirror of racial politics in the Northern Territory at the time.
But then, through speaking with the families of both killer and victim, McKenna unearthed new evidence that transformed the historical record and the meaning of the event for today. As he explains, ‘Every thread of the story connected to the present in surprising ways.’ In a sequence of powerful revelations, McKenna explores what truth-telling and reconciliation look like in practice.
Return to Uluru brings a cold case to life. It speaks directly to the Black Lives Matter movement, but is completely Australian. Recalling Chloe Hooper’s The Tall Man, it is superbly written, moving, and full of astonishing, unexpected twists. Ultimately it is a story of recognition and return, which goes to the very heart of the country. At the centre of it all is Uluru, the sacred site where paths fatefully converged.
Yellow Bird by Sierra Crane Murdoch
When Lissa Yellow Bird was released from prison in 2009, she found her home, the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota, transformed by the Bakken oil boom. In her absence, the landscape had been altered beyond recognition, her tribal government swayed by corporate interests, and her community burdened by a surge in violence and addiction. Three years later, when Lissa learned that a young white oil worker, Kristopher "KC" Clarke, had disappeared from his reservation worksite, she became particularly concerned. No one knew where Clarke had gone, and few people were actively looking for him.
Yellow Bird traces Lissa's steps as she obsessively hunts for clues to Clarke's disappearance. She navigates two worlds - that of her own tribe, changed by its newfound wealth, and that of the non-Native oilmen, down on their luck, who have come to find work on the heels of the economic recession. Her pursuit of Clarke is also a pursuit of redemption, as Lissa atones for her own crimes and reckons with generations of trauma.

Thanks for tagging me @forasecondtherewedwon 💜!
rules: list 5 of your favourite books on a poll, so your followers can vote which book they think captures your vibe the best
Tagging: @the-road-betwixt, @austennerdita2533, @galvanizedfriend, @orlissa, and @cbk1000.
Book summaries from Goodreads below the cut:
A Murder for Her Majesty by Beth Hilgartner
Horrified at having witnessed her father's murder and fearing that the killers are agents of Queen Elizabeth I, eleven-year-old Alice Tuckfield hides in the Yorkshire cathedral by disguising herself as one of the choirboys.
The Way Lies North by Jean Rae Baxter
This young adult historical novel focuses on Charlotte and her family, Loyalists who are forced to flee their home in the Mohawk Valley as a result of the violence of the 'Sons of Liberty' during the American Revolution. At the beginning, fifteen-year-old Charlotte Hooper and her parents begin the long trek north to the safety of Fort Haldimand (near present-day Kingston).
The novel portrays Charlotte's struggle on the difficult journey north, and the even more difficult task of making a new home in British Canada. In the flight north, the Mohawk nation plays an important role, and Charlotte learns much about their customs and way of life, to the point where she is renamed 'Woman of Two Worlds.' Later in the novel she is able to repay her aboriginal friends when she plays an important part in helping the Oneidas to become once again members of the Iroquois confederacy under British protection.
Strong and capable, Charlotte breaks the stereotype of the eighteenth-century woman, while revealing a positive relationship between the Loyalists and aboriginal peoples.
The Romanov Prophecy by Steve Berry
Ekaterinburg, Russia: July 16, 1918. Ten months have passed since Nicholas II’s reign was cut short by revolutionaries. Tonight, the White Army advances on the town where the Tsar and his family are being held captive by the Bolsheviks. Nicholas dares to hope for salvation. Instead, the Romanovs are coldly and methodically executed. Moscow: Present Day. Atlanta lawyer Miles Lord, fluent in Russian and well versed in the country’s history, is thrilled to be in Moscow on the eve of such a momentous event. After the fall of Communism and a succession of weak governments, the Russian people have voted to bring back the monarchy. The new tsar will be chosen from the distant relatives of Nicholas II by a specially appointed commission, and Miles’ job is to perform a background check on the Tsarist candidate favored by a powerful group of Western businessmen. But research quickly becomes the least of Miles’ concerns when he is nearly killed by gunmen on a city plaza. Suddenly Miles is racing across continents, shadowed by nefarious henchmen. At first, his only question is why people are pursuing him. But after a strange conversation with a mysterious Russian, who steers Miles toward the writings of Rasputin, he becomes desperate to know more–most important, what really happened to the family of Russia’s last tsar? His only companion is Akilina Petrov, a Russian circus performer sympathetic to his struggle, and his only guide is a cryptic message from Rasputin that implies that the bloody night of so long ago is not the last chapter in the Romanovs’ story . . . and that someone might even have survived the massacre. The prophecy’s implications are earth-shattering–not only for the future of the tsar and mother Russia, but also for Miles himself.
Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond
In this "artful, informative, and delightful" (William H. McNeill, New York Review of Books) book, Jared Diamond convincingly argues that geographical and environmental factors shaped the modern world. Societies that had a head start in food production advanced beyond the hunter-gatherer stage, and then developed writing, technology, government, and organized religion—as well as nasty germs and potent weapons of war—and adventured on sea and land to conquer and decimate preliterate cultures. A major advance in our understanding of human societies, Guns, Germs, and Steel chronicles the way that the modern world came to be and stunningly dismantles racially based theories of human history.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling
Harry Potter, along with his best friends, Ron and Hermione, is about to start his third year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry can't wait to get back to school after the summer holidays. (Who wouldn't if they lived with the horrible Dursleys?) But when Harry gets to Hogwarts, the atmosphere is tense. There's an escaped mass murderer on the loose, and the sinister prison guards of Azkaban have been called in to guard the school...

Rag Rugs, hand knit from recycled clothing, Karen Tiede Studio.
Karen Tiede tells about herself:
"I’m an artist, currently working in recycled fiber. I was a chainsaw carver for a while, and will be again when I can find a place to work where the noise doesn’t bother the neighbors. I knit, and weave, and paint, and write. I teach social media at NCSU’s continuing education division, and run social media campaigns for local businesses.
My husband and I feed six dogs and two cats between us, commuting between Goldsboro and rural NC south of Raleigh. He’s a professional clown, and I’m also a professional hula hooper."
Here her story goes even wilder:
"I have a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Russian; we lived in Moscow from 1971-74 and it wasn’t too hard to pick up the second major. (Dad was the Assistant Naval Attaché for the Marine Corps; our maid at the time was a KGB agent. Nixon visited halfway through our stay.)
I worked in a lot of different positions, including what we now call fracking chemistry. This part of my life is well-documented in Linkedin. Eventually, I settled at EDS, and took advantage of the steady work to develop my artistic skills.
I’ve been knitting as long as I can remember. My mother taught me; my father never wore store-bought socks. I knit socks in high school, and sweaters in grad school in MA, and then moved south to NC.
I knit lots of lovely wool sweaters: three Fassetts, one elaborate Aran; a tablecloth in crochet cotton that used six miles of thread. I knit shawls. The dog ate one. I gave up on wool clothing in central NC, where the climate only requires wool three months out of the year."

Ok, I have started reading Jaws because I like the movie (I have watched it like 3 or 4 times) so I can help but notice some changes
(I’m 100 pages in, and Quint hasn’t appeared yet, so I'll update with a reblog)
First of all, some things I don't like, I can help but squint at the blatant way anyone who isn’t a standard white male is depicted. I try to maintain the: it was another time! but it’s clear that those opinions weren’t a product of the time (1973 btw) It’s weird, because they don't add much to the plot and there doesn't seem to have other characters that could give you a: hey, I don't actually think that, here's me writing a woman without being a weirdo (idk how to explain it better)
Leaving aside that, it's actually a pretty solid horror story. Some of the shark facts are well researched, and it treats the shark as what it is, an animal searching for food and not some kind of vengeance machine. It's also interesting to read, because the true horror are the state agents who forced to keep the beach open
Contrary to the movie, the shark actually eats the 6-year-old with the floatie, I believe Spielberg decided to cure the trauma of several readers.
Character wise, the book adds deepness to Brody as he is dragged into guilt of the shark attacks. He also feels threatened by good looking men, (which I’m not sure how is supposed to be viewed, probably as big strong alpha man but I’m going to think is Bi panic) However, I liked more how the movie portrayed Hooper the biologist, he’s 25 in the book.
The cover is also pretty cool

"Screaming childbirth hooked him behind the sternum, and a thousand glowing screens infested with a hundred thousand vile truths lashed him between the shoulders." - what's this passage about? It stuck in my mind a bit but I can's determine what it's refering to
Some background to make sense of what will be a sort of vague answer (sorry):
Agent Hooper was originally developed for a Call of Cthulhu campaign that I ran for @taylor-titmouse , @amphiaria , @gchoule and @cafiffle years back. When I set out to write The Dogs at Duskfall, based in Taylor's setting and incorporating his protagonist, I thought it would be funny to create a kind of parallel text to The Hounds of Tindalos (a story by Frank Belknap Long, one of H.P. Lovecraft's friends, set within his fictional universe).
What you need to understand about that choice is that I hate Lovecraft's writing with a passion, and I think The Hounds of Tindalos is somehow even worse. It's not just the small minded social/philosophical outlook that Lovecraft took in his life and fiction, it's that I think his prose is insanely uninteresting and poorly constructed and he gets a lot of undue credit for doing not very much at all.
One of my most vehement and petty beefs is that the 'master of describing the indescribable' hardly ever actually describes anything with any nuance or specificity. Don't get me wrong, leaving the monsters out of frame and describing the shadows they cast is a long and noble horror tradition and can be super effective, but play that trick more than once and I'm going to start asking why. What are the implications? What are you trying to evoke from the audience? Why did you choose the details you chose and obscure the things you obscured? What are you drawing out of the reader's imagination beyond "imagine the scariest thing you've ever seen. now imagine that x100. it was scarier than that."
The point I'm getting to is that I tried to put my money where my mouth was with The Dogs at Duskfall. In writing sequences like the one you're quoting, where Roger comes into contact with disorienting scraps of human experience, I tried to walk that line between describing (literal sensations, events and ideas) and some kind of undescribing (decontextualising and confusing them in ways that get across the subjective 'indescribable' experience Roger is going through). Whether that succeeded is down to the reader, but at the very least I hope it's more interesting than just saying 'madness' a lot and assuring that you wouldn't be able to comprehend the scene if you tried.
(If you don't know what this post is about, check out the monsterfucker erotica I wrote for Taylor Titmouse)
