Will never not be weird to me that the newborn fight has like . . . no fallout in the text.

I get why. Breaking Dawn is the re-write of Forever Dawn, which was written before Eclipse (and New Moon) existed. So because there was no newborn fight in Forever Dawn, it's not really a factor at all in Breaking Dawn. I also get that our narrator wasn't there at the fight so to her it's not like a super big deal; for her, Edward and Seth's fight with Riley and Victoria was the traumatic thing.

But like, dude. The supporting characters were literally fighting to the death. To the death! They could have died! This newborn army was trying to KILL them!

They killed sentient creatures! Sure they were vampires bent on killing them and it was self-defense. But those vampires were victims themselves; mere months ago they had been teenagers with lives until they got roped into Victoria's revenge scheme. This is tragic. It's one thing to kill Laurent or James who are centuries old and making their own choices. But the Seattle newborns? They were just kids, kids who were used and lied to. And they KNOW they're kids because the definition of a newborn is being a vampire for less than a year. They were about the same ages as the shapeshifters themselves. Diego was 17. Raoul was 16. Riley was only 18. Hell, even as vampires they spent their non-murdering time playing video games and reading.

I think the only time it comes up in Breaking Dawn at all is when Jacob is talking about the Cullens' abilities as fighters and who should take out whom if it comes to a fight. Jacob's not haunted by the fight. None of the shapeshifters seem to be at all. Even Jacob's horrific injury is just like . . . whatever. He's healed. It's fine. No one is upset or traumatized by that. No one is wondering what they would have done if there hadn't been a vampire doctor able to break and reset the bones.

None of the Cullens are bothered by the fight, either. It's just full-on into wedding mode.

This didn't stir up some stuff for Jasper? Really?

And the whole Bree thing! Esme and Carlisle were ready to adopt this girl! And then she's just never mentioned again. That doesn't haunt them?? They aren't horrified about what happened to that poor kid?

I understand, it would be a buzzkill for Bella and Edward's wedding and honeymoon for these characters to actually have to deal with any aftermath. The supporting characters just gotta do their supporting stuff. I get it. I do. But you set up this big battle and then it's just like "well! glad that's over!" Why even bother writing it if it doesn't matter?

wait wdym dc didn't stick with Red Robin for Tim [and the de-aging thing?] what are they calling him if not RR?

He's been Robin again since 2019 😬 it's a bit more complicated but that's the gist of it.

Okay so Tim became Red Robin in the 2009-2011 series of the same name, back in the post-Crisis timeline. He was supposedly 17 at the time, by official records, and I believe he was still supposed to be 17 when the universe was rebooted with Flashpoint in 2011? (Although this doesn't really make any sense with respect to jamming the huge number of events that happened while he was Robin into like four years, if he was supposed to have become Robin at 13; he should probably at least be 18 if not 19-20).

The Flashpoint reboot took us into the New 52 (much beloathed), where nearly everyone was de-aged to some extent to keep Bruce Wayne and his generation from getting ~too old~, and also Tim Drake was mangled into a completely different character who had never been "Robin"; he'd been "Red Robin" right from the start of his vigilante career. He was de-aged to 16 for the New 52 Teen Titans series.

Teen Titans (2011) #0; as you can see, this version of Red Robin kept a version of the bandoliers and gave Tim a fancy new functional wing cape that he could fly around with.

Next, Rebirth in 2016 was a partial reboot that brought back some aspects of the post-Crisis timeline; tbh I'm not an expert on this period. What I do know is that Tim mainly appears in James Tynion IV's run of Detective Comics that ran from 2016 to 2018. During this period Tim was still called Red Robin, but he'd basically reverted to a Robin costume, with only the silly doubled "RR" symbol identifying him as not ~actually~ Robin winkwink nudgenudge, and as I understand it he was mostly back to functioning as Bruce's partner.

Tynion's run ends in Detective Comics #981 with Tim telling Bruce that he's going off to Ivy University. (He's totally lying, as Tim Drake does; Alfred notices that his tracker is going off in the opposite direction of the university, but Bruce is like "I trust him" and turns the tracker off. Yay, I guess?)

Anyway the important bit is this revealing that Tim is 'going-off-to-college' age. Which could still reasonably be anywhere from 17-19, and DC being DC, they ~refuse to confirm~

In 2019 we got the actual return of Tim as Robin (no "Red") in Brian Michael Bendis's Young Justice run, re-uniting the Core Four from YJ 1998.

Young Justice (2019) #1

As you can see, he no longer has the doubled 'RR', and he confirms that he's Robin - "Well, one of them!" I think he's supposed to be filling in as the Gotham Robin while Damian is running around the world having adventures and presumably getting into trouble, as Robins do? idk.

Tim also chases down his erased post-Crisis past at the beginning of this arc, having Zatanna magically restore (most of) his memories of the previous timeline, and, crucially, his forgotten best friend Kon, kickstarting some plot.

Tim, and all of the Young Justice crew, are notably young-looking for almost the entirety of this run. It varies based on the artist, but uh, yeah for the most part they are really damn baby-faced. This is a trend that continues with Tim and his generation of friends from this point onward, so fans have basically thrown up their hands like "is he 17 forever???? is he Edward Cullen from Twilight???? is he aging backward????"

We Just Don't Know

In any case, Bendis makes DC's next attempt to give Tim his own identity in short order, giving us the hilarious, ill-fated, and rightfully short-lived "Drake" identity.

Young Justice (2019) #10

He's back to being Robin by issue #18, hilariously switching costumes from one page to the next, although some time has apparently passed during the scene transition.

Young Justice (2019) #18; Jinny: "Is Drake back to being Robin?" Kon: "I think Batman and Spoiler made him go back to Robin. Don't bring it up. And say thank you because we didn't have to have the Drake intervention we were planning."

And as of the current date (July 13, 2023), Tim is still in the Robin identity, sharing it with Damian ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ God knows how old he's supposed to be right now. I certainly don't.

Batman (2016) #136; the most recent issue out to date, with Tim suiting up as Robin while filling Bruce in after diving into a bunch of parallel dimensions to bring Bruce home.

As you can see, it's a Mess. The Tim Drake's Vigilante Identity question is of course a hotbed of wank and infighting, as people are torn between (a) wanting him to continue as Robin and (b) wanting him to move on and "grow up" into his own identity again (and, importantly, leave Damian as the sole Robin again, lol).

It feels like most people are for option (b), but then nobody can agree on what his next identity and costume should be. Red Robin again?? Some other bird-based identity that doesn't share a name with a major restaurant chain?? Something else entirely??

God only knows what DC is going to come up with, especially after the Drake fiasco.

Twilight Agere Headcanons (#2: Edward Cullen)

Edward was not a regressor in his life, but his transformation was so difficult that he woke up deeply regressed

Carlisle was there and took care of him for the first days, as Edward came back to himself

the two of them had an intensely complicated relationship: Edward resented him, as an adult, for damning him to this existence, but as a child in the night, he wanted nothing more than Carlisle’s company and comfort

and of course, everyone’s thoughts were so loud in those days: Edward and Carlisle had to go and live in the middle of nowhere for a while for Edward to adjust

once Edward was steadier on his feet, he started to draw back from regression: treating Carlisle as a friend instead of a father, despite Carlisle’s clear interest in the latter dynamic

especially once Esme came into the picture, Edward absconded for his vigilante days, only coming back later, once he felt that he’d made his point about being a fully independent vampire

then the siblings came: seeing Rosalie and Emmett’s regression, Edward found himself wanting that dynamic in a way he never had before: he’d only ever needed it, not wanted it

so he awkwardly re-introduced himself, now with both Carlisle and Esme as caregivers, and as an older brother to his other siblings

it takes him a long time to admit to himself that he is still a regressor at a range of ages, including much younger, and to let his adoptive parents take care of him in that state

Edward is a quiet regressor: taking the chance to sit and observe, rather than run and play

that said, Emmett can pull him into chase games and other silly wrestling matches

Esme likes to have him close, she's particularly protective of him

Carlisle sometimes pays too much attention to Edward and makes the others jealous, it’s an ongoing balancing game in the family

Edward likes listening to music while regressing: first Carlisle playing piano, then records, then tapes and CDs: he especially likes big headphones that help to drown out the thoughts and voices around him

he also regresses alone, heading out into the forest to find a spot where there are no thoughts that he can hear, where he can just roam and pick flowers and climb trees

he often brings a book and reads out loud to himself and it makes him feel a bit lonely

Edward picks out a stuffed animal when he decides that he wants to be a younger regressor: it’s a very careful decision and he loves his stuffie very much: most of the others share toys, but he prefers to have one or two of his own

absolutely abhors finger paints and doesn’t like getting messy in general: a bit judgmental of the others for doing so

Then there´s the fact they´re a little bit over a millenia old. (Guess I´ve always been into older women, lmao.) That´s just so mind-blowing! Like, can you imagine the things they must´ve witnessed? All those inventions that changed our world forever, the great wars and tragedies, the people they´ve probably met and so on.

Conversations with the sisters would be so fascinating! The stuff they could tell you which probs sounds like a fever dream, but it´s actually real because they were there. They saw it happening. That´s just-

It´s a good thing that time is something they got loads of, because I´d ask them SO many questions. They´d have to frequently remind me that-

Then you´ve got their personalities, which are basically the total opposites of the Cullens, lol. Like, it´s just so funny because, remember at the wedding in BD Part 1 when Kate was so friendly and, dare I say, tame when she went like "We´ve heard so much about you!" to Bella? Even her voice was different, all high-pitched to make her sound as non-threatening as possible, lol.

Then we see her "true" self in BD Part 2 where she was basically threatening Bella with zapping Renesmée to get her to work that shield of hers. And I mean, that´s just Kate, right? We know that now - she loves to live risky (well, risks that don´t involve the Volturi, lol). All the sisters do, I reckon. Or at least Tanya and Kate probs. Irina is more the silent bystander, watching proceedings with equal parts amusement and disappointment. 😂

Anyhow, MY POINT IS: They´d be fucking hilarious to be around. They´d be so chill and carefree because they don´t see the need to hide their true self like the Cullens do. Probs because they don´t see the need to "blend in" in the first place. Like going to school and some shit. Hell nah. They mostly stick to themselves, except for the times they need something from the local stores, like interior deco or something.

We also know most (or some) of the Cullens are ashamed of what they are, or feel like it´s a curse or something. The Denalis are the complete opposite of that yet again, at least that´s how I HC it. Perhaps it´s the age and they just got used to the idea by now, because what else can they do? What´s the point in moping around all the time about something you can´t change anyway? You gotta make the best of it. 🤷‍♀️

So yeah, I think they´re defo able to see the benefits of eternity rather than focusing only on the hellfire aspect, which the Cullens seem to be in the belief of. Like, believing they´re gonna end up in hell simply for being what they are, yknow. I mean, I don´t judge them for their beliefs or anything. They were born in different times, so ofc they might see some things differently. But I also think the Denali´s age has kinda made them more...receptive to other beliefs and ideas? When you witness the world changing/adapting over and over and over, you´re bound to develop a certain "attitude", I imagine.

Which, again, their age just makes it so fascinating because they´ve probs witnessed The Bible being written or something, lol. Perhaps they were looking over the one or other shoulder going like-

"Yeah, that´s not what happened dude." LMAO

(Just kidding ofc. The Bible was written way before the sisters were even born, but I think it´s hilarious to imagine it, lel.)

And again, THEIR AGE. I just can´t get over it. Like, all those historical events they´ve probs witnessed???

Twilight Advent Calendar 2023 Event

Dec. 18 - What are some things the Cullens do every time they move? Does anyone have any rituals re: leaving a location or starting at a new one?

It's kind of a bittersweet time, even when the move has been scheduled and has nothing to do with someone having an accident. It's always a bit jarring to bring their cover stories to a sudden stop after 4-6 years of pretending to be completely human, growing up, etc. Those personas are essentially "dying," and dying young.

They gradually retreat from human society beforehand; they really are busy but they also do their best to fade from public view like that instead of just disappearing overnight. Sometimes they talk about the move (to a fake destination), sometimes they don't. Some random thoughts:

-Carlisle and Esme take some quiet time alone together. They find a favorite lookout point or other special spot (sometimes even a public place like a cafe). And they just talk about everything that's happened, new things they're hoping for, their worries and ideas about the kiddos, etc. And then they just sit quietly and silently say goodbye in their own ways. It's sort of a spiritual moment they share, just one without words.

-The moves are the hardest on Rosalie, especially if they're just starting over right away without any break or vacation. It's a bit easier for her if there's something to look forward to, so between Emmett and Esme (and Rosalie herself) this is often the case.

-I wrote Rosalie and Emmett burying a time capsule full of keepsakes when they left the Olympic Peninsula in 1940, and I'm toying with the idea that they do this every time—not sure yet.

-Like Carlisle and Esme, everyone tries to visit their favorite local spots one more time. For Edward it's usually his meadow or cave or whatever was his Brooding Place. For Rosalie/Emmett it's usually a human venue like a dance club.

-Like @miss-morgans-lover said, Jasper is very busy in the weeks before a move. He actually sort of likes the nitty-gritty of managing everyone's identities, erasing paper and electronic trails, deleting pictures from databases, being the liaison to Jenks, etc. He likes to contribute in a concrete way that helps keep everyone safe, and for the most part he's enjoying the challenge here in the digital age. He takes his responsibility for putting the fear of God into liabilities like Jenks very seriously. Bella, why on earth would you take this away from him??? Back off.

-Carlisle still has a lot to do, even though Jasper has taken on a good share of the load he used to bear re: identity management. He generally keeps a handful of identities active at once so he can store valuables, keep in touch with old colleagues (he loves "aging" himself in those letters/emails), and keep his investments going with as little fuss as possible. He also has to pay his dues: preparing his CV, going on interviews, being the new guy at work again, etc. It's always hard for him to be the new guy; he likes the challenge of starting younger every time, but he always has to hold back and re-earn the respect he's become accustomed to.

-Emmett always introduces/tweaks a new vampire-level sport for everyone to try at the new location. It's his way of cheering everyone up and giving a bit of meaning to whatever the new place is. Whenever possible, he finds a way to match the sport to the location.

On the topic of Shadow's immortality, how far do you think it extends?

By that I mean that, he's not magically immortal, he's still a life form with biological functions and organs. The question is: how many of those functions are truly "required" for him to live VS your average Joe

Of course we know he doesn't age, so one can assume that his cells reproduce pretty much perfectly, but do they need fuel? Does he need to eat and drink? Does he require oxygen? (Come to think of it have we ever had a game where it was possible to have him drown just to test the latter?)

I was going to say that he probably doesn't require any sleep, but him dozing off for over half of Battle's story seems to indicate that he'd need to rest at the very least in response to heavy physical extertion and injuries

There's nothing in the games to substantiate this, but I hold a personal fanon that Shadow isn't truly immortal. He just ages so incredibly slowly that he might as well be immortal.

I'm not sure why I think that tbh. Maybe it has something to do with how ancient Black Doom is implied to be in ShTH.

Plus, there's the fact that Shadow's Ichikoro gauge (the gauge responsible for instant KOs) refills the slowest out of the entire cast in Battle. Which would imply that even with Chaos Emerald energy at his disposal, he "heals," or creates new cells, incredibly slowly.

I've also recently posted a theory that the "organ" responsible for Chaos Control is the heart. He'd probably need that one too :v

I know Sonic X isn't exactly canon but it was implied he bled. Red blood. Don't really vibe with the idea that Shadow bleeds green blood.

Re. eating; not sure, guess it depends. I'd assume as a living being he'd need some amount of sleep and nourishment just like any other, but could go for long periods of time without it if need be.

However, I don't think his immortality renders him like Edward Cullen, who doesn't need to eat, sleep, or breathe. It just means he's highly resilient against disease.

Shadow can drown in SA2 DC's Hero Chao Garden pool, so the answer is yes, he needs oxygen.

I'm re-reading Twilight and I actually find it a lot more charming the second time around now that I'm not thirteen and I know about the allosexuals. I decided to come up with a headcanon to help the worldbuilding of Twilight along: the Cullens are like that because if you turn a teenager into a vampire, they never mentally grow up. They only retain clear memories of the last 5-10 years and lose emotional development over time.

The Cullen parents (don't remember their names cos I haven't got there yet and didn't care enough sorry) take great risk to send their "children" to school cause they think it's the kindest option, to keep them sane by keeping them w kids "their age". They also live in a house with them and cook their meals and stuff for this reason. The reason why Bella gets to have kids and a happy ending at the end of the series is cos her love turns Edward into a real boy like Pinocchio

I’ve found that the most telling evidence that Something Else is amiss in the broad dislike of Scott is the lack of enthusiasm for Sciles. Compare it to Supernatural, which was also big at that time: 2 young attractive male leads (DOB being 3rd billed aside), good chemistry (both on-screen and IRL as friends), comedic dynamic, unbreakable bond, occasional flirting, etc. Sciles should have been THE pairing by almost any metric. Sterek had the antagonistic dynamic to set it apart, but given how much people water it down to fun banter or erase it altogether in fic, that canonical difference clearly wasn’t all that essential to shippers’ enjoyment. Allison comes up ALL the time as a complaint but other fandoms seem to be able to demonize and/or erase canon girlfriends without much of an issue. It leaves very, very few explanations when you look at it from that POV.

When I first entered fandom, I wasn't very interested in relationships; I focused more on character development in relation to plot. When I wrote, it was primarily gen fiction. As time passed, positive interactions with the fandom (there can be some!) led me to consider relationships as an important part of the greater whole. But one thing I never quite understood is the hostility to both Scott and Stiles's friendship and Scott and Allison's relationship. Unlike some people, I don't think that a non-canon relationship like romantic Stiles and Derek or Stiles and Peter simply can't work. I've written Sterek myself. It's always confused me how fandom seemed to seek validation for those ships by tearing down both of Scott's primary canonical relationships, which are completely unrelated.

Now, you know, I eventually came to several conclusions about why this happens, which I have talked about a great deal and will continue to talk about. But it's always key to me when actually grappling with an issue is an attempt to understand the other side. So I asked myself, for instance, why was Scott and Allison's canon romantic relationship so unpopular? It seems to me that those opposed to it have four major complaints which I have seen expressed in print.

It was heterosexual, and that is somehow bad.

It was stupid and dangerous: a newly bitten teenage werewolf falling in love with the teenage daughter of werewolf hunters was a recipe for disaster.

It distracted the lead protagonist (Scott) from the issues he should be addressing and the people to which he should be listening.

As the primary canon relationship of the first two seasons, parts of the audience felt it was being forced on them.

With the exception of the first one, which still mystifies me to this day, these others could have some value. I mean, the Romeo-and-Juliet trope is an old one, and people may be tired, in this modern age, of seeing it being re-enacted again. So, why don't you take an amble with me over to AO3? If these are legitimate fandom concerns, then it should hold up when we examine Teen Wolf's peer group of supernatural adventure shows.

Let's look at the famous Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003); it seems that the top two ships represented on AO3 are ...

Strange that the heterosexual canon ships of a vampire slayer and a vampire remain two most popular subjects. But that's an old show. We've changed. Let's look at something with more direct relevance. Tyler Posey was up for the role of Jacob in the Twilight film series (2008-2012). What ships are most popular there?

#1 Edward Cullen and Bella Swan

#2 Alice Cullen and Jasper Hale

Okay, interesting but there are still differences. There is less emphasis on inherent conflict, I guess. And those are movies, let's move back to television. (I will now switch from 'heterosexual' to 'man/woman' because some of these characters are definitely bisexual.)

True Blood (2008-2014) was a far more adult television show, so it would expand beyond the mainstream that the fandom finds so cloying:

It's kind of weird that these all have a certain pattern that the most popular ships to write about are all man/woman ships with built-in oppositional obstacles. Now, there are shows whose fandom are focused on non-heterosexual relationships, such as Supernatural, and while I haven't watched it and never will, I'm told that one of the reasons is that any canon man/woman ship was doomed by the narrative impulse to whack female characters. There's Legacies, which I don't know much about but it seems to be focused on a woman/woman ship and isn't that refreshing?

But I think, to paraphrase my favorite show, if three times is a pattern, five times might be a trend. It seems that fandom doesn't really have any problem exploring canonical problematic supernatural man/woman relationships as long as there is a particular trait among all the people participating in those relationships. Can you spot the pattern for yourself? Can someone explain to me why these are the most popular ships in their respective fandoms but those same characteristics make Scott and Allison's relationship distasteful. Of course, and always, we have to remember one thing

do you ever think about how so many of bella's choices occurred during times of extreme life or death stress? like she never had a chance to slow down and evaluate and process. lives were always at stake, hers or the cullens' or charlie's or renee's. when she re-chooses edward in nm he was trying to commit suicide. irl that creates a sense of responsibility, bonding and dependency for both people involved in the attempt. idk i'm just thinking out loud

Absolutely. When you look at the twilight timeline on paper it’s legitimately a SICK JOKE!!!! Edward stalks her just of mere weeks of knowing her. They start dating like two months later. Then she almost dies shortly after. Literally the entire saga is within a year & a half I believe.. I think even less? Bella never was in a relationship before, she wasn’t in therapy, she was 17-19 aka A TEENAGER who’s frontal lobe is not developed whatsoever. It makes me sad because she never was given a real chance to sit and think.

I think what makes me so sad about Bella is that she was so used to the trauma and thought she would never be able to recover from it so she didn’t even ATTEMPT to think of being without Edward. She is so deeply traumatized and suicidal not because she loved him so much and he left, but because of how the entire situation had a whiplash affect. How do you recover from that shit? Like oh mythical creatures exist and one loved me and then I almost died because of my involvement with him. She can say it’s love all she fucking wants but it was TRAUMA BOND.

Edward took everything from her & made her suicidal. He abandoned her and without Jacob she would’ve been dead because he introduced her to his world. People see this as romantic that they will do anything for love but I’m sorry lol they knew each other for less than a year and there is an EXTREME power imbalance and GIANT AGE GAP. He was predator, she was prey. This is why EL James wrote 50 shades based off of Twilight, cause the power imbalance is OBVIOUS. Bella never had a fucking chance.

Jacob was the only one trying to put some sense into her. Like she never once really thought about it, she just knew she had to in order to be equal to Edward. She didn’t think she was strong enough to leave him or recover from the trauma she endured. Her turning was a copout when really she should’ve just been single for a few months, went to therapy & ACTUALLY weighed her options. She never had a choice tho and Edward knew exactly what he was doing. He manipulated the situation & shouldn’t have pursued her. It’s genuinely heartbreaking she didn’t have time to breathe. Vampires are inherently selfish creatures, Edward even says this. He was selfish for pursuing her. And in the end Bella was selfish and just wanted vampirism to fix her problems. She saw no value in being a human and killer herself for a dude she knew for a year who had her under thrall. Tragic truly.

so this is re: the cullens being in high school, as per the ask you answered a couple days ago! i also always thought it was super weird, and i’ve been thinking for a while now that a MUCH better cover story would for them all (even carlisle and esme) to be grad school housemates (i say this as someone who has now spent two years in grad school and is about to be there for another five at least lmaoooo)

here’s why i think it would work:

1. the age weirdness wouldn’t be as obvious bc people of all ages go to grad school (i started when i was 22 and had classmates in their 40s)

2. related to age, the visible/physical age also wouldn’t matter as much since some of my classmates (me included 😭😭) looked like we could still pass as high schoolers while others gave off huge “kids and a mortgage vibes” even if they were just like a year older

3. the whole looking “off” and tired thing is just like. the grad school Look™️. the shadows under the eyes and general gaunt-ish appearance honestly wouldn’t stand out that much and if somebody said something about them looking “off” or whatever, they could just be like “late night studying” and the other person would be like “lmao so true bestie”

4. if they pretended they were all renting space in the same big house (and carlisle and esme just acted a little less parental), the whole “dating each other” thing wouldn’t be that weird at all. i feel like it’s not that uncommon for couples who get along to rent different floors or sections of a house, and if they didn’t pretend to be one big weird family situation and instead just acted like they all met each other at school, i don’t think people would even bat an eye

5. people go to grad school forever. like. for so long (i vaguely knew of someone who was in the eighth or ninth year of her phd). esp if they picked something like a big state school where the “kids” could go to undergrad first, they could realistically do four years of undergrad, maybe a two or three year masters, and then a phd of indeterminate length (usually at least five). that would allow them to stay in the same place for at least 11 years

and this is not an official point, but i will note that for carlisle to still do his whole doctor thing, i think it would be perfectly reasonable for him to have already “graduated” or whatever, but continue to stay with his “friends” for financial reasons, or just bc the living situation worked for everyone

anyway, i’m so sorry this was so long, and honestly i bet someone has already said this somewhere before, but it just struck me when reading the “why tf are the cullens in high school” post that grad school would be such a great cover story for them

I've definitely seen "just put them in college!" before (and I have made that argument myself) but I don't know if I've seen the grad school cover story specifically before!

It would allow Esme and/or Carlisle to be the 'peers' of their children rather than some sort of guardian or parental figures. They could, as you said, all be renting a house together and Esme could be studying architecture or getting a PhD in art history or whatever while the kids study who knows what. Maybe there's a medical school as well and Carlisle can go back (it still makes zero sense that Edward and Rosalie go "to keep him current' like how is that supposed to work? They come home and just recite from perfect vampire memory everything that happened in calls? Wouldn't Carlisle be keeping current by like, idk, actually being a doctor, reading journals, going to conferences, and continuing education?).

A group of friends renting a house together as a bunch of couples makes way more sense than two parents barely visibly older than their foster/adopted kids who all date each other.

And, honestly, it's probably a better use of their time to get actual advanced degrees rather than stopping at undergrad? I know because of secrecy how they use their knowledge and skills is somewhat fraught but like, publish papers under a false name or let someone else take the credit or something and you can still contribute to the world of academia.

First Sight

Hey Everyone! This is the first fic in a series re-writing some scenes of Twilight. In this fic, Bella is the vampire and Edward is the human!

Forks, Washington is a small town that experiences near-constant clouds and rain. Here, lives a woman. A woman who has been the same age for one hundred years.

Bella Swan was transformed at the age of eighteen into a vampire in the 1920s. Carlisle Cullen, who was Ms.Swan’s doctor, waited until the very last moment to change her once he realized it was either a bite or death. Bella often wondered if the bite was worth it. If it was better to cheat death herself at the expense of standing on the sidelines, slowly watching her parents age and die themselves. She kept up with their deaths by reading the newspaper every morning, looking specifically at the arbitrary section.

Many mornings were spent scanning the black ink-marked pages searching for the names Charlie and Renee. Despite Bella never dying, a piece of her soul broke away each time she saw a loved one’s name, declaring that, unlike Bella, the people she loved could not cheat death. The thought to bite her parents, and completely transform them into vampires in order to ensure their immortality did cross Bella’s mind. After that thought though, she always reminded herself that they deserved to not live out their human life, and celebrate their humanity. After her father’s passing in 1990, Bella reconnected with Carlise and the Cullens. She kept Swan and did not adopt the Cullen last name. Bella wanted to keep some connection to her family. Some way to carry the Swan name into the next generation. 

When the Cullen family and Bella moved to Forks and began attending high school in Forks, the group mainly kept to themselves. It always humored the group to hear the words that the human teenagers thought were secretly whispered between each other. Bella did not really care for anyone at the school and she only went because Carlise advised it would be good for her. Days would begin with her pulling into school, attending classes in the order of Biology, American History, English, and lastly creative writing. 

It was 8:09 am on a Thursday. That was the time when Bella’s life changed forever. She was sitting in Biology wearing a long sleeve shirt and low-waisted skinny jeans with her black converse shoes. The door opened, drawing her attention away from the chalk marks on the board she was steadily copying and towards an emerging figure. Yes, the boy was attractive, but Bella first noticed his scent. The smell of his blood was so strong she had to control herself. When Carlise changed her, he taught her to resist her thirst, and rely on animal blood instead of human blood. The change seemed to come easily to Bella, and she had never had the urge to drink human blood. The scent of the new student’s blood was enamoring.

The teacher announced unenthusiastically that the new student was Edward Masen. He was wearing a grey pullover sweater with jeans and white converse. His hair looked soft to the touch–not like that is what Bella was thinking about–and his hand appeared to have callouses on them. There was sheet music for the piano and another sheet for a guitar bass line sticking out of the folder he held in his hand. The only free seat was beside Bella in the class, and as Edward was walking over, he seemed not to notice the untied shoelace. Of course, the poor human boy tripped. Despite the clumsiness, there was something about the young man that was pulling Bella in. As he sat down at the seat after a slightly embarrassing entrance, Bella decided she needed to introduce herself. 

“Hello, I am Bella Swan. Welcome to Forks” the vampire stated with an enate charm and confidence while extending her hand out for the new student to shake. Edward took a moment to just look at the hand held out in front of him and after a deep breath, he responded. 

“Hello, Bella, I’m Edward. Nice to meet you.”

a lot of random regurgitated twilight facts (actual ones, I mean. not 'edward-is-gerard-way' ones) that have no "official" confirmation can usually be found on the twilight lexicon, and more specifically in post-twilight (2005) personal correspondences between smeyer and the lexicon women (or maybe it was just the one? idr)

I found the Sister Factoid just now with just a minute of clicking around on the site, in a personal correspondence (which are a fascinating read and I whole-heartedly recommend—teenage shannon re-read these with regularity for the serotonin) where OP was grilling smeyer on Cullen info (as one does)

you'll often see me bitching about how useless I find the official guide to be, and usually its because information that she revealed in the early days ended up being omitted (like random cullen family information) or retconned (like character backstory details, ages, etc). so as a person who developed their understanding of the twilight world without the guide and with only these myspace/message board era "from the keyboard of Stephenie Meyer herself" facts, I read the guide and thought "what fresh bullshit is this"

Probably a dumb question but I've seen so many fics that mentioned that Jasper had a younger sister in his human life, but I could never find it in canon??? Is it something someone made up once and people just agreed on?? help.

Okay anon, I had to get VolturiAlice and Flowerslut on the case with me because I know I read it somewhere legit eg the Guide or the Lexicon. I remember reading it and rolling my eyes that SMeyer couldn't have put less thought into it if she tried.

But I absolutely cannot find it. We are looking because Flowerslut remembers the same detail!

I will say that this was a relatively new detail that was released, so a lot of fics posted before 2010 just made a lucky guess.

“So you told them?”

You were headed into Bella’s room so she could finish getting ready for school. You had stopped by early just to avoid being around your family after last night. Jacob had stayed for dinner and you showed him your room for the first time. When he left, you were bombarded with questions from your family.

“Hmmm, it more accidentally slipped out… someone’s been in here,” you said upon entering the room.

“What?”

“I can smell something extra and it’s not ours or Charlie.”

“Where’s my sweater?” Bella muttered to herself. “I could’ve sworn I put it on the chair. I was gonna wear it to school today.”

You grabbed a random sweater from Bella’s closet and threw it at her to put on. You grabbed your friend’s wrist and dragged her back downstairs.

“We need to go. Call the school and say you’re sick today.”

“(Y/N)?”

“Just do it, Bella.”

You started your car and began to drive back to your place. You texted your siblings and then went to call Carlisle who was currently on shift at the hospital.

“Dad? We have a problem… no, a serious problem… ten minutes away, okay, see you soon.”

“I don’t think it’s the Volturi either. I’ve been watching Aro’s decisions too.”

“Okay. So we’ll keep looking,” Emmet said.

“We take shifts guarding Bella and her house.” Carlisle ordered.

“And I’ll tell the pack.” You pulled out your phone ready to text Jacob.

“Another protection detail?” Rosalie stared down Bella.

“Rosalie…”

“No, she’s right,” Bella said. “You guys can’t protect me, watch my dad, search for this mystery stranger, and keep yourselves fed.”

“Don’t forget about Victoria,” Rosalie added.

“I’m not leaving you defenseless,” Edward said.

None of you were sure how to proceed. Edward nodded to you as he read your mind. Jacob came over to Bella’s house to pick up the intruder’s scent. Only Jacob was needed, just from the mindlink the wolves shared they would be able to pick up on the scent if Jacob shared it with them. Jacob jumped out of Bella’s room window and met you guys in the front yard.

“Whoever it was left a major stink behind. It’ll be hard to miss when we cross it again. We’ll handle it from here.”

Edward frowned, not liking the commanding tone Jacob took. “We don’t need you to handle anything or anyone. It was just to warn you.”

“I couldn’t care less what you need. We’re done here.”

“No, you’re done here.”

You quickly got in between the two of them before it got heated.

“Will you two quit it. Jake, Edward’s my family. And Ed, you need to back off. I won’t talk to either of you if we continue like this.”

“Doesn’t he own a shirt?” Edward asked annoyed.

The rest of your family had to hunt so the pack was in charge of Bella today. The three of you met Jacob at his car. You ran over to your boyfriend you picked you up and spun you around. Jacob had said something about a party at the res.

You were excited about whatever party it was because the whole pack was off patrol today because of it. The other boys were lounging around, playing with your dog back at Emily’s house. You, Jacob, and Bella were in the garage. Jake was taking his free time to fix up some issues with his car.

“This is the first time I’ve ever actually been in here.”

“I forgot you’ve only ever seen this place on a very tiny screen,” Bella said from where she was sitting on a spare tire. She threw a bag of chips to where you sat in the driver’s seat with the door open.

“Well, you weren’t missing much babe. Welcome to the garage. Do me a favor and start the car again.”

Once Jacob felt the car was fine, you all made your way back to Sam’s house. There were a few more hours left before the party. The boys were really starting to get used to you around and as long as you kept bringing your dog around, they’d probably love you even more. You came out of the bathroom to where everyone was gathered in the dining room. You stumbled a little and had to grab the table to regain balance.

“(Y/N)?” Jacob looked at you concerned. The wolves went quiet. “When was the last time you ate?”

“The chips in the garage, had a big dinner a couple of days ago.”

“Not human food.”

You had to sit down, your head started swimming. “Since Emmett crossed the treaty line, maybe? I don’t even think I finished it.”

“You need blood, (Y/N).”

“I guess it just slipped my mind. It’s not like I crave it.”

“But you said you need it don’t you?”

The wolves jumped back when you looked up from having your head in your hands. Your normally gold eyes were dark brown almost black.

“That can’t be good for you,” Jared said.

“Jake, can you hand me my bag?”

Everyone watched as Jacob scrambled to hand you your bag. You reached inside and pulled out a blood bag.

“Alice packed my bag this morning. I know she saw this coming.”

“Oh that’s disgusting,” Paul looked away. “I think I’m gonna be sick.”

“Yeah… it’s different actually seeing you drink,” Embry muttered before turning away himself.

You drank enough to keep you feeling sustained.

“That’s barely the bag.” Jake’s words made everyone turn to you. He was right. You barely made a dent in the bag.

“I don’t want anymore. It kind of tastes bad… I’m fine, Jake.” You added seeing the doubt on Jacob’s face. “Are you sure about the party?”

You took one more sip just to appease Jacob before putting the blood bag up.

“Yeah, we don’t want to be party crashers,” Bella added.

“Technically, you’re council meeting crashers,” Sam said.

“The council leaders are Quil’s grandfather, my dad, and Sue took over for Harry,” Jacob explained.

“Okay, then we should really not be here.” Bella rubbed at her palms.

“It’s fine, we thought it’d be good for you to hear the histories.”

“The histories? Like the tribe’s histories, aren’t they secret?”

“You guys are very involved in this world, you deserve to know.”

“Plus,” Paul added. “Imprints definitely need to know. Ha, managed to make her blush.”

“Huh?”

You opened the camera on your phone to see he was right. It wasn’t really blush, but there was definitely a warmth to your face in the places a human would blush that was slightly off color from the rest of your skin.

The wolves grew nervous. Jacob’s thoughts were loud and from what they gathered, none of this was supposed to happen to a vampire. Rock hard skin meant no blushing ever, so why could he see some warmth in your cheeks.  Anything happens to an imprint and it affects the whole pack. Maybe Bella wasn’t the only one needing protection.

Seth and Leah gave you massive hugs upon seeing you.

“Oh it feels like it’s been forever.”

Leah pushed you playfully. “Yeah, first Alaska and then wolves… can’t believe you’re a bloodsucker now.”

“Now, last time I checked, I’ve been like this for about four decades now, five if we count the human days. Why are you two looking at me like that?”

“We were prepared to hear a lot older. You’re not even as old as the elders.”

“I’m pretty freshly turned. You want old, the next youngest in our family is Alice… from the 1920s.”

You sat in between Jacob and Leah as Billy told the story of the Third Wife. Every time he mentioned Cold Ones, Billy wouldn’t look in your direction. The stories were what they were, there was no changing them but he didn’t want to drive the point home about killing your kind. Not when you directly weren’t involved or were ever involved. Billy felt a thousand times better when he had discovered you had never had a taste of human blood in your life.
