#agatha is not a good guy

i lied i have more to say because can we talk about rio's relationship with agatha. not their collective relationship but specifically rio's side of things because oh my god i cannot remember the last time i watched a character suffer like this.

the way rio bent the rules for agatha knowing she would still be hated regardless, the way she still craves and misses and cares about agatha, clear in the way she defends her to evanora and the coven, in the way she heals her scar and refuses to reconnect without the truth laid bare between them, the way she respects their deal when agatha dies.

the absolute desperation when she yells "why don't you want me" in ep 8 like she's asking "what do i have to do? what must i change? how do i get you to take me back? how do i get you to forgive me? how do i get you to see my side?" she doesn't ask why agatha doesn't love her because she knows agatha does love her, in equal measure of her hatred. she asks why agatha doesnt WANT her.

rio is as old as the universe itself and yet, here she is, begging this mortal to want her, begging this mortal to see what she has done for her, see how she has pushed the bounds of cosmic law for her and yet, all she gets in return is cold hearted hatred because agatha cannot face rio without thinking of waking up to her son's dead body.

I don't want Agatha to become a good guy or some fully redeemed person.

She is the perfect antihero.

I mean, look at this jerk. She is having so much fun.

Don't get me wrong, I want growth for her character. She can let go of that tightly held control a little. To trust a little.

But in the end I like her complexities. Her moral ambiguity.

She is willing to give Lilia the grace to deal with her grief instead of being a snarky shit towards her.

She cares whether or not her companions die (especially with Teen), and it actively hurts when she is the cause of their pain and death.

She is a victim of her own powers as much as she is an antagonist.

She is capable of compassion, of kindness.

It's just for the most part she is on the defensive instead.

Of course, she is an annoying asshole to others

Of course, she is the smartest idiot in the room.

Of course, she is going to lash out and manipulate.

It's is her best weapon and a part of her armour.

Agatha had plans, combining the Darkhold and Wandas powers. She is not after world domination, whatever she wanted would take a lot of power and would be deeply selfish.

I want to see what she will do.

I am pretty convinced Agatha is the one who stole Teens Spell Book (the Darkhold) while he was unconscious. Hiding her blackened fingertips.

She can care and be a power grabbing jerk.

I want to see what she does with it all in the end.

I want her to be more while not conforming to societal norms.

also: I cannot believe that they went through so many bad titles (that they even announced!) before finally settling on Agatha All Along

isn't marvel known for its exhausting self-references? this one is really, really good! so good I assumed it was always the title once I had the context and heard the song from Wandavision? What could possibly be more perfect than to title the spinoff after the actual title that Agatha gave her own fake sitcom whilst revealing herself as the villain? One that EVEN HAS ITS OWN CATCHY THEME SONG??

i truly believe agatha and rio's story was always going to be a tragedy. there is too much hurt between them for it to end any other way. you can see it on rio's face the moment agatha begs for nicholas's life, when agatha says "i'll hate you forever". agatha was never going to give rio grace for that, she was never going to try to see rio's side of things, to try to understand that rio is bound by cosmic laws so ancient it precedes the word ancient. because she is a mother grieving her child and it's easy to put the blame on an external force. and yet still, rio gives agatha time with nicholas anyway, starves off the calling to reap his soul for as long as she could.

and to say that the death came from nowhere, especially after ep 4 doesn't really make sense to me. the only reason they were close to reconnecting in ep 4 was due to agatha deluding herself for a moment into thinking billy was nicholas, that rio had perhaps given nicholas back. and rio shatters that illusion because she doesn't want agatha back like this.

furthermore, let's not pretend rio's goals weren't abundantly clear from the moment we met her. when agatha asked what rio was doing there she says "my job". their whole fight scene in ep 1 was rio making herself clear. even with evanora, rio's wording is very specific "her mother can't have her". agatha is HERS to take. no one else's. thats how it has to go.

and that's exactly how it goes. rio's kiss is agatha's undoing, a willing undoing. she finally gives into this cosmic being who has walked on her heels all of her life. she finally gives into the woman she has hated, this woman she still loves and hates herself for loving.

and yet and yet and yet, even in giving herself over to death, agatha defies rio. "when i die i never want to see your face again". she remains as a ghost, out of rio's reach until she decides she is ready to move on, ready to face nicholas.

and rio honors agatha's wish because at the end of the day, agatha is the only force in the multiverse capable of making death kneel. "you're the only person in history who has received special treatment"

agatha hated rio for longer than she loved her (a very thin line she was dancing on), and rio yearned for agatha for longer than she had her, constantly on her heels but always just out of reach.

(sidenote: even if nicholas wasn't a factor here, rio would have still been forced to take agatha at some point. it was always going to happen. death comes for us all. even agatha isn't an exception to that.)
