[same article as this post, different excerpt]
Emma Saltzberg: When Israeli state actors were trying to influence the American Jewish conversation, what did that look like? What kind of activism were they targeting?
Geoffrey Levin: One of the main figures in the book is Don Peretz, a pacifist-leaning American Jew who volunteered to help displaced Palestinian Arabs in Israel in 1949, wrote the first dissertation on Palestinian refugees, and later became a major scholar on the subject. In 1956, the AJC hired Peretz to be their first Middle East consultant, and he wrote pamphlets for them about Arab refugees that did not rule out return as part of a possible solution. Later that year, Israeli diplomats pushed the AJC to fire him. The AJC compromised by allowing Peretz’s writings for them to be looked over—or censored—by the Israelis. Eventually, the AJC did push Peretz out. Israeli diplomats also successfully lobbied the London-based Jewish Chronicle, as well as several mainstream American Jewish publications, to disaffiliate with their longtime writer William Zukerman because he repeatedly wrote about the Palestinian refugee problem and was upset about refugees not being able to return.
A lot of these figures they went after, including Zukerman and Peretz, were not radical anti-Zionists. But Israeli diplomats were actually more concerned about these people who were operating within the American Jewish mainstream, because during its early years Israel relied heavily on American Jewish financial and political support. And they were afraid that the American government might pressure Israel to accept a limited refugee return, which they opposed because they wanted to maintain a larger Jewish demographic majority and to avoid having to return land to its previous Arab owners. So they didn’t want the American Jewish community wavering on its opposition to that. As far as Israel was concerned, it was best if American Jews just didn’t talk about Palestinian refugees at all—unless they were repeating Israeli talking points.
ES: What about the CIA and Arab state actors? How were they trying to influence American discourse on Israel/Palestine?
GL: Surprisingly, one of the main reasons American Jews were thinking about Palestinian refugees in the mid-1950s is because this CIA-funded anti-Zionist organization called the American Friends of the Middle East (AFME) was raising awareness about the Palestinian cause. This was part of the Eisenhower administration’s effort to create more political space to push Israel to make concessions to Egypt to help them court Arab nationalist Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser as an anti-Communist ally. In the US, AFME ran propaganda campaigns against Zionism. Many of its members were white American Protestants, though AFME also sponsored the creation of the Organization of Arab Students. So the first national American Arab student organization was funded with CIA money, though the students didn’t know that; they were just advocating for their cause.
There were also Arab state actors who were advocating for Palestinians in the US; I focus on the work of Fayez Sayegh, who was running the Arab League office in the US for a short period in the mid-1950s. At that moment, there was a hope amongst some in the American foreign policy establishment and some more conservative Arabs—often Christian like Sayegh—that America and the Arabs would align to counter Soviet influence in the Middle East. But by the ’60s, and especially by the ’70s, that dream was falling apart as Cold War alliances solidified. And so you had Arab states and the Palestinians moving in an anti-US direction, turning toward Third World alliances and alignment with global anti-colonial struggles. In fact, In the early ’70s, that Arab student group that was first funded by the CIA ended up being monitored by the FBI.

X-Men 2 fans: First Look at Nightcrawler and Stryker as brothers in Glenrothan
Tumblr media
Brian Cox‘s feature directorial debut “Glenrothan” — billed as his “love letter to Scotland” — has wrapped production, with a first look revealed showing the “Succession” star alongside Alan Cumming in a room full of whisky barrels.
Alongside revealing a first look from the feature, Protagonist Pictures has come aboard for worldwide sales and is set to screen exclusive footage for buyers at the upcoming American Film Market.
Lionsgate, which co-developed the project with London based studio Nevision, has taken U.K. rights on the family drama, which shot in Scotland.
In “Glenrothan,” Donal (Cumming) reluctantly returns to the Scottish Highlands after 35 years in Chicago to make amends with his estranged older brother, Sandy (Cox). Sandy needs Donal to take over the family’s whisky distillery or he will be forced to sell and give up on the family’s legacy. But their reunion forces the brothers to confront the past and the real reason Donal left Glenrothan. Shirley Henderson (“Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” “See How They Run”) and Alexandra Shipp (“Barbie,” “Anyone But You”) also star in the film.
“Glenrothan” is produced by Cox, Neil Zeiger, Crystine Zhang (“Prisoner’s Daughter,” “Lee”), Phin Glynn (“Argentina 1985,” “Kill The Jockey”), Nic Crum (“Book of Love”), James Cabourne and Vladimir Zemtsov (“Club Zero”). The film is co-produced by Nevision and Blazing Griffin Pictures in association with Screen Scotland, Oval-5, Gold Rush Pictures, Head Gear, Infinity Hill and Lionsgate.
“’Glenrothan’ is a poignant, funny and powerful story about the universal themes of family and heritage, set against the stunning backdrops of Scotland and steeped in the world of whisky,” said Protagonist CEO Dave Bishop. “Brian is an undeniable talent, both behind and in front of the camera, and is joined by the exceptional Alan Cumming — as such we are delighted to introduce buyers to this special film when we debut exclusive footage at the upcoming AFM.”
Neil Zeiger, lead producer added: “I have thoroughly enjoyed helping bring ‘Glenrothan,’ Brian’s ‘love letter to Scotland’, to the screen. Working with our incredible cast led by Alan, Shirley and Alexandra, Brian directed the film brilliantly. A universal story, wonderful performances and stunning images define the film. I am confident Glenrothan will compel and captivate audiences wherever in the world they are.”
Protagonist’s current slate includes the Venice, TIFF and San Sebastian selection “Kill the Jockey,” directed by Luis Ortega and recently selected as Argentina’s feature film contender for the 2025 Academy Awards; Samir Oliveros’ TIFF title, “The Luckiest Man in America,” starring Emmy and Golden Globe winner Paul Walter Hauser; the genre-bending comedy “Sister Midnight,” which recently screened at the London Film Festival and was nominated for Cannes’ Camera D’Or; and from directors Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, the political horror-comedy “Rumours,” which debuted at Cannes before going on to screen at Toronto, San Sebastian, New York and London Film Festivals.

Datalog: 11
Date: 30 July 3309
Time: 18:02
Location: Long Site Base, Khun
Finally returned from a two year stint between Colonia and The Bubble. Got my Powerplant, Distributor, Life Support, DSS andSensors engineered. I spent a good portion of my time out there resting. Unable to take the Neutron Highway in a ship with a 27.55LY jump range means it's a lot of jumps and it gets draining fast. I don't know how explorers do it. Though, they wouldn't take a Type 9 Heavy fitted for Deep Core Mining.
I've arrived in Khun to see about getting the FSD looked at, squeeze some extra distance from it. Afterwards, I need to line the pockets a bit for an AFM and look at tweaking whatever else I can.
It's been advised against to use the Type 9 Heavy for DCM, but this thing is fitted and being engineered for long periods of self sufficiency in space, moving between stars for fuel, rings for ores, and planetary excursions to restock limpets and munitions.

From today and for a week, the 33rd edition of the Telethon Marathon will be held in Italy on all Rai networks (the Italian state television network).
This is the site of "Telethon Italia Foundation" https://www.telethon.it/
This is the related Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Telethon.Italia
I copy an article dating back to 2004 which talks about Jerry in Italy:
Jerry Lewis and Susanna Agnelli under the sign of Telethon Private conversation this morning on the occasion of the great actor's visit to Rome, who will shoot some commercials in the United States in favor of the Telethon Foundation.
He with his usual verve, dressed in a tracksuit, she is very elegant and friendly: Jerry Lewis, father of the most famous television marathon in the world, and Susanna Agnelli, promoter of the Italian Telethon, met today in Rome as a sign of their common commitment for Telethon. A meeting between characters with many affinities and with the same goal which, at different times, has seen them take the field themselves to contribute to the fight against genetic diseases, starting initially from muscular dystrophy to arrive, as in the case of our country, to those rarer and unknown to the public until a few years ago. The private conversation, held at the Grand Hotel St. Regis in the capital, was also an opportunity for Mrs. Agnelli and Jerry Lewis to discuss the long history of Telethon, its successes with both the public and scientific results, the prospects for further growth and on the differences that characterize the television marathon invented by the great American actor in the various countries. In Europe, after France, the Italian Telethon is the second most efficient in raising funds and is highly appreciated by the international scientific community for the quality and quantity of the discoveries obtained with its funding for research on genetic diseases of hereditary origin.
Jerry Lewis reiterated his appreciation for the important results, well known to him, obtained by the Telethon Foundation in its 14 years of life. As confirmation of his trust, the popular American comedian declared that he wanted to record some commercials in his television studios in favor of the 2004 Italian Telethon. Mrs. Agnelli thanked him and stated: "I limited myself to emulating a model of great efficiency, adapting it to the Italian spirit". Jerry Lewis wanted to conclude by defining the Italians "The most lovable people in Europe". The Telethon (Television Marathon) was born in the United States in 1966, on the initiative of Jerry Lewis, with the aim of raising funds to start research on musical dystrophy, a rather widespread disease with causes that were almost unknown at the time. The success of the broadcast, both in financial terms and in terms of audience, then prompted the French Association against Dystrophies (AFM) to repeat the experience in France starting in 1987 and with equal success. In 1990 the AFM granted the availability of the Telethon brand for Italy to a Promoting Committee, chaired by Susanna Agnelli, born under the aegis of the Italian Union for the Fight against Muscular Dystrophy (UILDM).
The first solidarity marathon of Italian television, conducted on the RAI networks, also met with great public approval. In February 1991, the first call for tenders was issued to finance research projects on muscular dystrophies. Since 1992, the Telethon Promoting Committee, with a change to its statute, has opened the doors to research on all genetic diseases of hereditary origin. The Telethon Foundation was born in 1995, as an entity dedicated exclusively to the management of Telethon's research initiatives, to which as much as 80% of the funds raised are destined. Four Telethon research institutes have been created: the TIGEM, Institute which deals with genetics and medicine, the HSR-TIGET which operates in the field of gene therapy, the Tecnothon, a laboratory for the creation of prototypes of aids for the disabled, and the Istituto Telethon Dulbecco, born to offer job opportunities, also favoring their return from abroad, to young researchers of excellence. Since 6 May 1998, in compliance with law 460/97 on the tax regime of non-profit organizations (non-profit organizations of social utility), the Telethon Promoting Committee has changed its statute, changing the company name to "Comitato Telethon Fondazione Onlus". Since 1999, the Telethon Foundation ONLUS Committee has been awarded the High Patronage of the President of the Republic. @jerrylevitch @starryyide @prolen @pleiades974 @kingdc2017

An Ancient Cave Was Also Stronghold!
Tumblr media
TEHRAN—An archaeological team in northern Iran has collected survey samples from the Sepahbod-Khorshid Cave, whose arched entrance is one of the largest of its kind in the world.
“It is the first time that Sepahbod-Khorshid undergoes excavation,” Mazandaran province’s deputy tourism chief said on Wednesday.
So far, the cave’s entrance and parts of its [inner] structure have been subject to excavations,  Mohsen Bastani said.
Apart from the cave, six other archaeological sites across the province underwent archaeological work during the first half of the [current Iranian calendar] year (started on March 21), the official said.
Authorized by the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, the excavation served as a prerequisite for a subsequent restoration project intended to help safeguard treasured elements of the cave. “To undertake restoration, it is necessary to first excavate to provide enough spaces for restorers. We should start that to see what architectural phenomena and plans we are facing in the vast cave,” a local official explained earlier this year.
Measuring 80 by 100 meters, the cave’s rounded entrance is said to be the largest natural one in the world.
Situated in Savadkuh highlands, the cave was used as a shelter by Khorshid (“The sun”), the last ruler of Tabarestan, then surrounded by Arab invaders for several months and seized after poisoning its drinking water supply.
Narratives say the cave was the latest Persian stronghold against the Arab conquerors.
Access to the cave needs climbing gear and also expertise in alpinism. On the left side of the cave, a four-story-high castle was built; made of stones and mortar, it is the masterpiece of architecture of its time. On the right side, numerous trenches and defensive buildings were built, all of which remained firm and intact after centuries.
These two parts were connected through a road made of stones and mortar. Two meters wide, this road was built 50 meters above ground level. Today, only traces of it remain. The remains of a cistern, several silos, and numerous defensive monuments are located outside the cave.
Sandwiched between the towering Alborz mountain range and the Caspian Sea, Mazandaran has a rich yet turbulent history. An early civilization flourished at the beginning of the first millennium BC in Mazandaran (Tabarestan).

Its insecure eastern and southeastern borders were crossed by Mongol invaders in the 13th and 14th centuries. Cossacks attacked the region in 1668 but were repulsed. It was ceded to the Russian Empire by a treaty in 1723, but the Russians were never secure in their occupation. The area was restored to Iran under the Qajar dynasty.

The Morphological Properties of Zns Nanoparticles Deposited on Glass Substrates as a Function of Aluminum Content
Tumblr media
Authored by: A A Ahmed
Abstract
The pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) method was used to deposit undoped zinc sulphide (ZnS) and Al-doped zinc sulphide (AZS) films on glass substrates (GSs). The aluminum content in the ZnS films varied from 0% to 8%. The film morphology was studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The films were optically characterized using an Ultraviolet–Visible-near-infrared (UV-VIS-NIR) spectrophotometer with photon wavelengths ranging from 300 to 600nm. The average roughness (Sa), root-mean square (RMS) roughness (Sq), surface skewness (Ssk), and surface kurtosis (Suk) parameters of the samples were determined using the AFM method. The samples’ AFM grain sizes were found to be 4.89 nm, 5.65 nm, and 12 nm, respectively. The doped ZnS thin film’s surface roughness was found to be greater than the undoped ZnS thin film’s. The samples showed a high transmittance across the whole visible spectrum, according to the UV data. The film optical refractive-index (n) and the extinction-coefficient (k) was computed using UV–VIS spectroscopy data. The techniques used in these investigations have been described and explained in detail. Good agreement was found when comparing results from this work against previously published data.

Introduction
The metal chalcogenide in their crystalline state possesses many outstanding properties and has attracted considerable attention in the literature [1]. Semiconductor nanoparticles (SCNPs) films made of II-VI compounds have distinct properties that make them suited to several devices and applications [2]. Tin dioxide (SnO2), titanium-dioxide (TiO2), cadmium-sulphide (CdS), cadmium-tellurium (CdTe), cadmium-selenide (CdSe), zinc selenide (ZnSe), zinc-oxide (ZnO), and zinc tellurium (ZnTe) are all well-known SCNPs and well-studied in detail [3-10]. Among the SCNPs, ZnS is one in particular that has been widely used for a variety of applications. ZnS is an easily accessible, nontoxic, and environmentally safe compound with a higher direct band-gap energy (3.7 eV) [11].
ZnS is a metal chalcogenide with a high refractive index, a large band-gap energy, and a high UV-visible transmittance [12,13]. The polytypes of ZnS are cubic-zinc blende (sphalerite) and wurtzite (hexagonal) [11]. Furthermore, ZnS structures frequently crystallize in space groups (F43m) and (P63) in the cubic zincblende (ZB) phase at low temperatures, and (P63) in the hexagonal zincblende (ZB) phase at high temperatures [11]. Several research groups have attempted to dope ZnS films with elements such as In, Al, Fe, Co, Pb, Cd, Cu, Mn, Cr, Ni, Eu, Sm, and Cl throughout the growth process [14-20]. However, there have been infrequent studies on aluminum doped with ZnS films and placed on substrates [21,22]. However, aluminum doped ZnS films deposited on glass needs further investigation. Numerous deposition techniques, including sputtering, thermal evaporation, spray pyrolysis, chemical bath deposition, close-spaced evaporation, electron beam evaporation and pulsed laser deposition have been used to prepare ZnS thin films [14,23-26].
To our knowledge, only a few investigations was conducted on zinc sulphide thin films prepared via the PLD method on glass substrates. Several methods are demonstrated, but the pulsed laser deposition technique is shown to maintain the desired composition in the deposited thin films. Because the high kinetic energy of atoms and ionized particles in the laser-produced plasma, the PLD method can be used to deposit ZnS film at low temperatures [27]. This method is used to deposit materials on large surfaces under air conditions and on a variety of substrates in a well-controlled manner. Nonetheless, due to the intricate growth mechanism and method, deposition of ultrathin ZnS and AZS films via PLD remains extremely challenging. The results of these analyses, performed by utilizing the AFM method and the UV–Vis spectroscopy, have been documented.
Materials and Methods
Sample preparation
Sigma-Aldrich analytical grade reagents, chemical, and sodalime glass substrates were purchased and used without further purification in this investigation. The precursors for Al, S, and Zn were aluminum chloride hexahydrate (AlCl3.6H2O), thioacetamide (CH3CSNH2), zinc acetate dehydrate [Zn(CH3COO)2, 2H2O)], and ethylenediamine (NH2CH2CH2NH2) of analytical reagent quality. For several minutes, the zinc-acetate and ethylenediamine were mixed and agitated to obtain a clear and uniform solution. The product was then added to the zinc-acetate solution, followed by the addition of tri-sodium citrate. The resulting solution was agitated for a few minutes in each case. Following this, it was added to the previously produced thiourea solution while stirring. To obtain Al-doped ZnS (AZS) samples, the combined materials were mixed in the proper ratio and then dried. Numerous hours were spent extensively rushing the combined AZS samples. To manufacture the pellets of the thin films, a 5-ton hydraulic press was used for 3-5 minutes at room temperature.
Thus, pellets roughly 1.2cm in diameter and 0.2cm thick were produced from the given AZS sample. The glass substrates were degreased for 12 hours prior to deposition using soap water and alcohol. Following this procedure, glass substrates (GSs) were ultrasonically cleaned for 10 minutes with alcohol and deionized water. Finally, the glass slide substrate was rinsed, washed with deionized water, and air dried. PLD with a focused Q-switchedneodymium- doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd: Y3Al5O12) was used to deposit the ZnS and AZS films on the glass substrates (GSs) (Nd: YAG). The depositions took place at four-hour intervals.
Pulsed-laser ablation was carried out using a focused beam in TEM00 mode laser with primary and secondary harmonic outputs at 1064 and 532nm, respectively. The laser system was operated using pulses with a duration of ten nanoseconds. A pulsed laser with an energy density of 2 J/cm2 and a frequency of 6 Hz was used to irradiate the object. The thin film target spun as the laser restored across an area of approximately 0.5cm2 with a spot size of 3 mm2 and an incidence angle of 45°.
Throughout the development process, the target-substrate distance was maintained at a constant of 2.0cm. The substrate was clamped to a heated holder, and the temperature of the deposition solution was measured. Prior to heating the source, the chamber was evacuated to a pressure of 10-3 torr. The ZnS and AZS film were deposited on the GSs using 500 pulses and 100 mJ/pulse energy. The target and laser source were separated by a predetermined distance of 12.0cm. All films were of a thickness of between 200 and 250nm. However, when the films were grown using the PLD method, the deposition rate was calibrated, in order to regulate the thickness. The details concerning the set-up of the PLD method experiment have been provided elsewhere [14]. All samples were labeled as a control (ZnS/GSs or S0), the Al-doped ZnS/GSs (ZnS/ GSs: Al 4% or S1) and the (ZnS/GSs: Al 4% or S2), respectively. The sample morphology and optical properties were measured by the AFM [28] and the UV–Vis spectrophotometer [29].
Results and Discussion
The surface roughness of the films, as defined by arithmeticmean height (Sa), root-mean square height (Sq), skew (Ssk), and kurtosis (Sku), was measured and is shown in table 1. The film arithmetic mean height was calculated to be S0 (5.509nm), S1 (9.964nm), and S2 (23.92nm), in that order. It was observed that in comparison to S0, the Sa of the sample surface increased from 5.509nm to 23.92nm with aluminum doping. The film root-mean square roughness was calculated to be S0 (7.251nm), S1 (13.30 nm), and S2 (44.11nm), in that order.
The sample skewness was found to be S0 (0.7310), S1 (1.179), and S2 (3.585), respectively. The sample kurtosis was S0 (5.046), S1 (10.38), and S2 (20.36), respectively. These findings show that the doped sample surface of S1 and S2 was rougher than the S0 surface. The dopant of ZnS/glass substrates led to a slight alteration of the parameters. However, the Sa and Sq film parameters had increased. Furthermore, the Ssk and Sku parameters of the film increased from 0.7310 to 3.585, and from 5.046 to 20.36, respectively.
AFM micrographs of the prepared films show that spherical shape grains are uniformly distributed. Surface kurtosis values greater than 3 were found in all the examined samples, indicating sharper peaks and longer, fatter tails in general. Rku values greater than 3 indicate that the peaks and valleys have further flattened out. This finding suggests that Rsk can be used to distinguish the roughness profiles of the two surface processes. Surface roughness analysis was performed by capturing 3-D images of the surfaces of ZnS thin films with a scan area of 7.8nm x 7.8nm.
Figure 1 depicts the 7.8nm x 7.8nm 3-D images of the undoped and doped ZnS thin film surfaces for (a), (b), and (c), respectively. It is observed that Al doping induced noticeable changes in the surface morphology. The size of the grains increased for 4 wt. % Al doping (Figure 1(b)), and bigger clusters were formed on the film surface for 8 wt. % a Al doping, as shown in figure 1(c). It was also reported that Al doping in ZnS led to an increase in the grain growth.
The scales of the Z-axis in figures 1a-1c show that the surface of the undoped deposited ZnS thin film is much flatter, in comparison with the surface of the doped deposited ZnS thin film (c). When the aluminum content is gradually increased, the scales of the Z-axis of the undoped deposited ZnS thin film surface increases. It is seen in figures 1a-1c that the scales of the Z-axis are different. Figure 2 depicts a histogram of the percentages of ZnS and ZnS: Al as a function of grain size (a to c). The AFM analysis extracts surface parameters from the AZS thin films, allowing for the investigation of the surface analysis with numerical data.
The profiles of the AFM image cross section are shown in figure 2. The AFM image cross-section shows that islands in samples grown with aluminum concentrations of 0%, 4%, and 8% have a quasi-rounded shape distribution with an RMS value of 4.89nm and 5.65nm, for 0% and 4%, respectively. In contrast, for an aluminum concentration of 8%, the profiles exhibit a quasitriangular distribution of islands with an RMS value of 12nm.
The origin of the rough surface morphologies is correlated to the enhanced aluminum at a high aluminum concentration of 8%. Small ZnS islands tend to coalesce into larger ones as a result of the extra aluminum migrating on the surface. This coalescence allows for a reduction in the density of ZnS islands. Thus, 0% aluminum concentrations favor the 2D-like growth of ZnS, resulting in a wavy surface.
A quantitative optical model was employed in the calculation of the concentration-dependent reflectance of AZS structures, as detailed below. The experimental results add to our understanding of the relationship between aluminum concentrations and optical properties. A UV–Vis–NIR spectrophotometer in the 600 nm range was used to measure the optical properties of AZS thin films at room temperature. The reflectance spectrum was obtained using a UV–Vis–NIR spectrophotometer. The effects of variables on roughness were investigated using both morphological and optical responses. Table 2 shows a more detailed comparison of the films’ refractive index (n), extinction coefficient (k), reflectance (R), and surface roughness (Sa). However, as the refractive index, extinction coefficient, and reflectance of a material decrease, the value of its surface roughness increases.
In summary, we provide a correlation between Aluminum concentration and surface morphology evolutions versus the optical parameters of AZS on substrate based on the optical properties results. The results show that the high-density island structure acts to increase the scattering of the AZS surface. Changing the concentration of Al can affect the density and size of islands.
We compare the surface roughness, aluminum content, and reflectance as shown in figure 3. It is significant to note that the contribution of all surface defects and features is regarded as the primary cause of light scattering, as a result of which reflectance decreases for reflectance measurements. Finally, based on the reflectance data, we present a correlation between AZS concentration and surface morphology.
Conclusion
In summary, un-doped and Al-doped ZnS film was deposited on glass substrates using the PLD technique. The effects of aluminum concentration on the morphological and optical properties of the films were investigated using AFM and UV methods. According to the AFM studies, the film roughness changed significantly, following dopant treatment. The average roughness, rootmean square roughness, line skewness, and kurtosis of the ZnS films deposited on the glass substrates slightly increased after aluminum content-treatment. The AFM topography of doped and deposited films with aluminum content ranging from 0% to 4% revealed a surface texture with waviness.
