Drizzt cannot die.

Death ignores him. It has lingered around him so long that he's a part of it, an appendage. Death can't take itself.

He faces danger again and again and again againagain--things that would kill a normal mortal, but they slide off him like raindrops off of a summer leaf. It leaves him unbroken.

Unbroken is not the same as unchanged.

This is why he went back to the Underdark in Starless Night. He'd had enough. If he was going to bring death no matter what, then he would bring it to his enemies instead of his friends.

And he did.

Drizzt unknowingly being an omen of death.

Maybe he was born this way, or maybe it was a curse brought on by his circumstances--the massacre his birth aided, the murder that ensured his survival. Either way, he is drawn inexplicably to those near death.

Sometimes that death is natural, like Mooshie. Sometimes it's unnatural, like the Thistledowns. Sometimes he can prevent the death. Sometimes--cruelly--his presence inadvertently causes it. Sometimes it's both.

Death follows him. Or he follows death. It's hard to say. But one thing is certain: to affiliate with Drizzt Do'urden is to dance with the reaper, to tempt fate. It may take a day or a decade, but you WILL die if you stay near him.

Maybe he's worth the risk.
