Ordeals
Charlie Weasley x Legilimens!Reader
Summary: (Y/N) has a hard time sleeping after the war, good thing her husband is there when she wakes up.
Prompt: A lovely request from @cutie-bug (that took WAY too long to get out of my head, I’m so sorry!)
Word Count: 1.6k
Warnings: none
A/N: uh. hey. i’m back. whoops. sorry for the hiatus. i’m trying to get back into writing, but it’s been increasingly hard for me of late. in the meantime, however, enjoy a lovely fic with our fave dragon boi.
__
A sliver of light filtered through the moss colored curtains, shining directly onto the dark covers of the bed beneath. The sheets rose and fell with the deep slumber of the redheaded man resting under, gently lifting momentarily to fall back down. The morning had barely begun, the sun only recently rising, but that had left no impact on the other owner of the bed.
(Y/N) had been sitting upright, head in her hands, for at least an hour before the sun rose. The war may have ended nearly a year ago, but the nightmares never ceased to end. It was easy to rationalize that the fighting and bloodshed had ended when she had woken, but the sleepless slumbers left her no deliberate way to understand the reality. It had become a habit to live off three to four hour nights of interrupted sleep.
A sputtering cough came from (Y/N)’s left side, her head turning ever so slightly towards the sound. Charlie usually had woken up by now, but yesterday had been a long day at the dragon sanctuary, loads of new eggs had finally hatched and were in need of constant supervision. Voldemort and his Death Eaters had come into owning a few dragons, neglecting their basic needs as creatures and using them for their own selfish purposes. Charlie was chosen to lead the rehabilitation of the few dragons rescued, leading to late nights and early mornings.
“(Y/N)?” Charlie muttered, voice thick with sleep. A chunk of his red locks fell in front of his freckled face, forcing the half-asleep man to push them back into place.
What’s wrong?
“I’m fine,” (Y/N) responded curtly, as she had every morning.
Doesn’t seem like it.
“No, really. I’m really fine.” She rose her hand up in protest, glancing away. The small gemstone from her ring caught the ray of light, sending a glittering shimmer to her eye.
“Stop reading my mind, love,” Charlie yawned, pulling his arms above the sheets, stretching them out for the day. “And before you say anything, I know it’s stronger when you wake up, but you and I both know you’ve been awake longer than you’d care to admit.”
(Y/N) sat in a stunned silence. Of course her husband could see through her possible excuses, he had been doing so since the war ended. A soft echo of Charlie’s voice rang through her head.
How long?
“I’ve only been awake for an hour or so. I’ve tried to fall back asleep but nothing worked—not even counting dragons.” (Y/N) chuckled airily.
“What was it this time?” Charlie had fully sat up, parallel to his wife. His white pajama shirt was bunched and twisted up from his sleep.
“The usual,” (Y/N) groaned. “We were back at Hogwarts, fighting some Death Eaters,”
I bet I looked great.
“You did look pretty great, like usual,” (Y/N) responded, elbowing Charlie slightly. He smiled lightly. “But this time, you didn’t dodge. The spell… it hit you.” The sound barely leaving her lips.
“But I’m still here,” Charlie gently rested his hand under (Y/N)’s chin, cupping her cheek. “I’m always still here.”
“I know,” Her head softly pushed into his grip. “But if I lost you, I don’t know what I would’ve done. Merlin, what would I have told your mother? She would have lost two sons in one day and—”
“But she didn’t,” Charlie said, tone sharp. “Fred is gone, that can’t ever change,” A deep sigh. “But I’m still here, see?” His hand enveloped (Y/N)’s, circling the back of it with his thumb. “You still feel me, right?”
(Y/N) nodded. “I just wish they would stop.”
“I know.”
The two sat in silence, the familiar pacing of their breathing settling both of their worried hearts.
“Your hands are always so cold in the morning,” (Y/N) spoke up, slowly pulling her hand away from Charlie’s icy one. “I still think you should wear a pair of mittens while you sleep.”
“Once you learn to knit, then I’ll consider it,” Charlie laughed, his fingers tracing over his other knuckles, twisting his wedding band. “Besides, you’re always there in the morning to warm them up.” A peck landed squarely on (Y/N)’s temple, soft and wet.
“Gross.”
“Can’t a man appreciate his furnace of a wife?” Charlie asked, voice slightly hurt. (Y/N) rolled her eyes before kicking one leg off the side of the bed, her second soon to follow. “Wait, love—”
“I’m not in the mood, Charlie. Deal with it yourself, you have two—rather cold—hands. I put more tissues in your nightstand if you really need to—”
“Who’s the gross one now?” Charlie said, gripping onto (Y/N)’s sleep shirt, preventing her escape. “As much as I appreciate your extremely polite decline, that’s not why I was stopping you.”
“Wouldn’t have been the first time,” (Y/N) shrugged, kicking her leg back onto the bed. “Not that I usually complain.”
“Neither do I,” Charlie laughed, the sound bouncing off their small bedroom walls. “As much fun as that would be, that’s not what you need right now.”
“What I need?” (Y/N) questioned, resettling back into the nest that laid before her.
“What you need, indeed.” Charlie repeated. “Quite clearly you’re need of some good, old fashioned, Weasley cuddles.”
“Charlie, you know I want to—”
“Shush!” Charlie hissed, patting the sheets closer to his open arm. “Come on, in you go.”
(Y/N) rolled her eyes, a small smile breaking onto her lips. She nuzzled her way into her husbands side, fitting like a missing puzzle piece.
Smells good.
A wider smile tugged at the corners of (Y/N)’s mouth, hiding her happiness in her husband’s chest.
“You know,” Charlie hummed, fingers weaving through (Y/N)’s hair. “No matter where we are in the world, as long as I can have you in my arms like this—just like this—it feels like home.”
“There you go again,” (Y/N) sputtered, blush creeping up her neck. “Saying everything that’s on your mind like it’s nothing.”
Charlie chuckled. “A habit I picked up from courting you, love. You’d be able to read my mind anyway, might as well beat you to the punch, no?” He angled his head down, eyebrow teasing his hairline.
“It’s fun to read your mind,” (Y/N) spoke honestly, weaving her hand under the blanket to rest on Charlie’s thigh. “You know I try not to do it often, but it can’t be helped.” She shrugs, fully resting into Charlie’s side. “Besides, I like your honest reactions.”
“Reactions? To what—” It was in that moment that (Y/N)’s hand began gently moving up and down his thigh.
Merlin…
“To that, my dear husband.” (Y/N) chuckled, stopping all movements entirely. “Those are the reactions I live for.”
“I thought you weren’t in the mood?” Charlie mused, clearly enjoying the game his wife was playing.
“Oh, I’m not,” (Y/N) smiled, removing her hand to her side, leaving a small peck on Charlie’s jaw. “But it’s fun to tease. Your face—”
“—color matches my hair,” Charlie rolled his eyes. “Yeah. I think I’ve heard that one before.”
Only a thousand times
“A thousand and one, then.” (Y/N) laughed, peppering more kisses along her husband’s jaw. The soft smacking sounds echoed through the room, filling the empty space with love. With one swift motion, Charlie angled his head towards his wife’s attentive lips, capturing the delicate two between his own.
“You know,” Charlie began. Another kiss. “I have to be at work in an hour.”
(Y/N) groaned, running her hand down Charlie’s chest. “I know,” she breathed, patting his chest lightly. “Those dragons can’t do anything without their dad, huh?”
Charlie’s chest rose with laughter. “Yeah, except maybe burn down a village or two.” He snuggled closer to (Y/N), filling the empty spaces with blankets and comfort. The soft morning sun continued to filter through the curtains, cloaking the lovers in a ray of light and hope. (Y/N)’s features were practically glowing against the rays, illuminating the face Charlie loved so dearly.
“You know, I don’t have to read your mind to know what you’re thinking.” (Y/N) smiled, peering up towards her husband’s eyes. The brown irises were gleaming with life, stoked by the expression he had only ever fathomed emoting to her and only her.
“Oh yeah?” Charlie hinted, pressing a soft peck to (Y/N)’s forehead. “Then what’m I thinking?”
“That I should go put a pot of coffee on if you’re ever going to leave this bed.” (Y/N) yawned, retreating from their love nest, pulling the dark sheets to the side.
“Ah, exactly that,” Charlie said, watching (Y/N) swing her legs across their bed, moving to exit their bedroom. “See? You don’t need to read my mind to know what I’m thinking, love. It’s our special connection.”
(Y/N) smiled, turning towards their kitchen. The wooden floorboards creaked with every step, almost drowning out the sound of a faint thought, one of Charlie’s, one (Y/N) practically missed.
I love you. So much.

Favorite shoes?
Probably my Guess sneakers. I don’t wear them often, but I love the design.

This is a bit more dark, but my dad and I don’t bond outside video games. And he’s the type that believes it’s his way or no way no matter what. So if you get him angry he acts like a two-year-old who just got a toy taken away, and will try to push your buttons until you’re the same way. I saw the signs years ago, but whenever his anger is targeted at me I just don’t want to eat. I write instead.
Favorite labels about you?

Seven or eight.
Tell a funny story.
Maybe this is just funny to me, but earlier today my cat was trying to lick her coat but she set her front paw on a piece of paper and anytime she bent over to lick herself she slid and she would have to readjust herself. She did this like four times before she decided to move.
What’s one interesting thing about your culture?
As someone who is a part of the Navajo tribe, something neat is the more fat you have on your bones the more people respect you because they believe you have money.
What’s one annoying thing about your culture?
We can’t touch cold-blooded animals. It’s said if you touch the scales of a snake, or even breath in the same air, you’ll get the same skin as them.
What job would you be terrible at?
Accounting. I can’t do math to save my freaking life.
Would you rather watch a TV show or a movie?
TV shows.
What’s your favorite compliment to give?
“Cute Outfit!” or “Love the Hair!” You have no idea how many people light up on either of these, male/female/nonbinary. Looking good is a happiness found across all the spectrums.
What’s your favorite compliment to receive?
“Cute hair.” Or “Love your makeup/nails.”
Has your opinion changed on something recently?
I can’t remember. Like I said, it’s close to bedtime where I’m at and boi, it’s hard to concentrate right now.
Do you always order the same thing at a restaurant or order something different each time?
I order the same.
What’s something you’ve always wanted to try but haven’t yet?
This sounds awful, but I’ve always wanted to try ecstasy. I have buddies who’ve taken it and say, if you do it right, the first time is pretty bomb.
If you could learn to do anything right now, what would it be?
Singing. I can’t carry a tune.
Favorite physical feature about yourself?
My eyes.
Least favorite physical feature about yourself?
My wide hip/waist ratio. If my waist was thinner I wouldn’t mind as much.
What’s one amazing thing you did that nobody was around to see?
OKAY. I scored a strike on Wii bowling while i was on the toilet one time. Two rooms away and not even looking at a screen. Just using my heart and determination and it was SUPER COOL AND I WISH PEOPLE COULD HAVE SEEN THOSE SKILLS.
If you could change your height, would you?
Yes. Everyone is a good foot taller than me. So I would most definitely want a few more inches.
What’s something you would rate 10/10?
Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s Character concept for Sephiroth. The eyes, the height, the hair. WOW. In love.
Heels or flats?
Heels
What’s something you wish you had more knowledge about?
Politics. I want to get more involved but every time I do I get so confused.
Would you want to be famous?
I wouldn’t mind. But I value my private life.
What’s something you would get arrested for?
Well I already almost got arrested for eating tacos in a closed park at 3 am. So maybe that.
What’s your spirit animal?
A cat.
What’s the luckiest thing that’s ever happened to you?
The fact that I graduated high school. I was developing anxiety and literally had no idea what the frick was happening with me and no one told me what it was. So I ended up skipping loads of school for that reason.
Are you the type to have an organized mess, or no mess at all?
Organized mess. Or just a mess.
Do you tend to make decisions based on the past, present, or future?
The future.
Are you a planner or a more spontaneous person?
Planner. I hate when things are sprung on me last minute. I have to emotionally prep up before a social event so 5-10 business days are needed.
Thoughts on the oxford comma?
I was taught to use it, but it’s literally so useless? I found myself either not using it or just doing it on instinct. So in one story you could probably find multiple instances where I use it and where I don’t use it, maybe in the same paragraph. I just do whatever fits that moment I guess.
What do you hope never changes?
My squad. I love them to pieces and it would break my heart if at some point they’d want to split.
How would you celebrate your 100th birthday?
Something extremely dangerous like skydiving or zip lining across a canyon.

to avoid extreme spam of anyone brave enough to follow me, i’m putting all of my 9.12 thoughts in one post. tl;dr: i loved it.
the (much, much) longer version:
the “previously on” starts with scenes from episode three or four of season one oh gosh
THIS IS A GRACE HIGHLIGHTS REEL. I’M ALREADY EMOTIONAL
first question of the night: rachel wakes up and finds that grace didn’t come home so she jumps in the car and races to danny’s, but where did she leave charlie in the middle of the night??? i’m assuming he was with her
i’ve already seen this very first bit in one of the previews but still: grace was driving a car that stan bought her two weeks ago and that DIDN’T HAVE PLATES YET and nobody told danny. there are so many things wrong with that
these actors are both so good in their despair though. the opening credits are just now starting and my heart has already been squeezed to a pulp???
steve!!! the very first thing we see after the credits is steve, sick with worry, half running into the hospital and speeding up when he sees danny to wrap him in a hug. he does this little hop thing?? that kills me??
so steve squeezes danny (and it kind of looks a little like danny was going for a handshake bro hug thing but steve just bulldozered over him and gave him the real hug they should be having? good steve) and then he rushes to rachel to hug her too, like a matter of course. i like that
oh noooo. the other girl’s dad turns up and blames he crash on grace (understandable under the circumstances but not helpful in the least) and as soon as steve realizes what’s happening he steps over to situate himself in between this guy and danny??? i love steve so much gosh
duke turns up with critical info and he tells steve about it??? not danny or rachel, and admittedly he maybe has a stronger bond with steve i guess but at least danny he definitely knows pretty well too (they’re ohana too, right?) but he tells steve about what’s technically danny’s daughter and there’s so many things to be read into that (the main thing obviously being that steve is as good as grace’s parent too and it’s canon fdjkfdjk)
i’m five minutes in at this point and i already have this much commentary. this is going to be long
i think i’ve said this before but: it’s not necessarily bad that stan bought grace a car. it’s not bad either that rachel didn’t tell danny, but if what rachel says and it’s because grace wanted to tell danny herself, then rachel should have put her foot down and not let grace go out with the car (that didn’t have plates yet??? that can’t be legal right?) until grace had actually told danny about it!!! rachel just doesn’t learn from her past mistakes about not telling danny shit about their kids that danny DEFINITELY should have been told and it’s a believable character flaw but it’s so painful
“there’s all kinds of things that happen that you should’ve told me about that you don’t tell me about, i’m used to it, alright? i’m used to it.” danny fucking knows and this is honestly the number one reason why romantic danny/rachel can’t ever work again as far as i’m concerned because it would be built on so much resentment and pain and pure shit that it’s just too much to put behind you, because they won’t ever be able to fully, completely trust each other again (and not all of it would be rachel’s fault, btw, i’m not saying that - it’s just that when she fucks up, she fucks up big time)
“i’m a cop now. i’ll keep it professional.” [cut to tani pushing her suspect out of his chair and onto the floor] well, you know, she’s got a point there. that’s exactly what professional looks like to five-0 (i like this secondary plotline a lot though! tani as protective and slightly violent older sister is super interesting)
danny is calling steve to update him even though there’s barely any knews because steve deserves to know everything (and probably because danny’s wants to hear his voice, lbr) and it’s good
this phone call between tani and junior is also super sweet!! (though it does kind of add obvious fuel to the fire of parallels they’re drawing between tani&junior and danny&steve, whether that’s something you like or not)
the whole team is so concerned about danny and of course they are but it’s still really good to see!!
of course grace can’t just get in a car accident, it has to be some kind of a crime. (i don’t even really mind but it’s just so predictable, gosh. they need someone to blame)
kamekona and flippa are bringing food to the hospital!!! that’s so thoughtful!
charlie! he exists in this episode! i’m still slightly fuzzy on where he was all night (because noelani comes in with him but the way she then asks charlie if he wants to hang out doesn’t seem like he’s been with her this whole time, so where the hell was he?) but it’s good to see him now, at least
also!!! noelani babysitting charlie!!! EVERYONE IS HELPING OUT. OHANA. <3
danny had noelani bring some stuff for rachel which is good and kind but the sweatshirt thing makes me... a little concerned... about romantic connotations. but i’m stubbornly deciding to read this as a purely platonic gesture to help out a sort-of-friend/co-parent
OOPS steve calls because they located a phone that grace received a threatening text message from at the hospital, but is leading danny to this person really a good idea right now? oh gosh
oh god grace was helping a classmate that got bullied and she dropped a girl’s phone in someone’s beer to stop her from showing around a picture and i love grace
the thing is, right. the thing is. I KNOW that grace is going to be okay because she’ll be in the next episode, eating pancakes at danny’s and laughing with steve, but i’m STILL almost crying watching danny and rachel wait with all this sickening tension without knowing anything and then watching them rush to get some news only to hear there’s been a complication and all they can do, AGAIN, is wait more
it’s GOOD but it’s SO PAINFUL
steve, junior and lou watch a security tape of zippy’s where some creepy guy keeps coming up to grace and katie’s table and then grace gets up and clearly tells the guy to go away and a) that’s really good on its own but also b) steve’s proud “atta girl”!!! yes!!!
danny apologizes for being mean about the car, holy shit. and yes, he was a little mean, maybe, but he was also incredibly stressed and he had a right to be angry, god.
“i should have been more honest with you. about a lot of things.” at least rachel had realized that much, omg.
rachel is playing the “what if” game and danny tells her that she shouldn’t and it’s actually a really nice moment. i like this.
THAT VIDEO. and both rachel and danny just crying and crying and the mutual forehead kisses and comfort??? i think i’ve made it pretty clear that i don’t ever want romantic danny/rachel again but this? i LOVE this. they can’t be a couple but they can still be a team and family in this weird way through their kids.
danny is just sitting on the floor in a hallway now and steve finds him and sits down next to him before they even say a single word and i’m already swamped with feelings just from that. i’m easy like that djfdkjf
steve says that grace is really taking after danny by going after bullies and standing up for the little guy and danny says “i think maybe she gets that from you more than me” anD I AM DECEASED. RIP ME. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO HANDLE THESE FAMILY FEELS??
i’m not going to quote their entire conversation about steve being in more of grace’s pictures than danny and steve saying they should throw grace a big graduation party in steve’s backyard and danny actually smiling about something but i COULD because this is EVERYTHING I EVER WANT.
rachel finds them with the news that grace is OKAY and FUCK YES but also???? danny and steve’s expressions of relief???? are the exact same??????? and then there’s THAT ONE HUG that involves danny and rachel and steve, all three of them, and at this point literally nobody can convince me that steve isn’t as much a parent to grace as either of these other two
ALSO. LET ME JUST TALK ABOUT THAT HUG FOR A BIT. danny and rachel fall into each other’s arms because duh, at this point, of course you’d hug, and danny kind of swings them around a bit and then REACHES FOR STEVE who’s standing there right next to them with his hands on his hips and just DIVES into it and rachel makes room for him too? and then they’re CLINGING TO EACH OTHER and steve has closed his eyes and wrapped himself around them and he has his chin on danny’s shoulder and danny is smushed between them and have i given of the vibe that I LOVE THIS yet because I DO
grace! we get to see grace in color for the first time this episode!
there’s a party for grace at danny’s home!!! and danny says he didn’t know about it and i’m leaning towards believing him because i can easily be 100% convinced that this was steve’s doing oh gosh
GRACE AND STEVE HUG. literally just the hug content in this episode is lethal to me oh shit
“we’re still here, okay. anytime you need us, we got you.” PRIME DAD!STEVE. FUCK YES.
djfdjkfd @ steve somewhere in the background when kamekona mentions the restaurant going “i still prefer the name steve’s”
koah’s thing about appreciating tani and appreciating being brought into this big weird family????? almost made me cry again
OH NO. yep i was bracing for this already because i’d seen enough people talking about this, but i’m at the end, with danny and rachel outside at a small table and danny brings her some food they ate at their first date and she points that out and he says that it’s on the menu because it was their first date meal and, uhhhh, no. nope. don’t do that, come on, guys, what the fuck
alright, so yes, there are pretty undeniable flirting vibes here, but i’m stubborn. i’m still going to deny them. i’m going to view this as a happy end where danny and rachel have been brought a little closer together as divorced parents of two kids and where they can share a moment again without it devolving into a fight and i’m choosing to let that be all it is. and steve’s look and smile at them? that would honestly be out of character if it was supposed to be “oh i’m happy that danny might be getting back together with his ex-wife” so obviously i’m going to interpret that as “oh i’m happy that danny and rachel seem to be getting along platonically because that’ll make danny and grace and charlie’s life easier”
okay, now that i’ve seen all of it, two things:
what happened to katie??? she was just as bad off as grace from what we heard but we never got to hear if she was alright??? and the thing with her dad was never resolved either???
MELISSA. remember, danny’s girlfriend??? i’m about 99.9% sure we never heard that she and danny broke up, unless i missed something, and i don’t think i did. so. what the fuck are we supposed to think there? i’m not certain they’ve mentioned her once this season but at the same time danny was definitely teasing steve about his lack of dates in 9.01 and that was a prime opportunity for steve to say something, anything, to danny about danny’s dating life as a comeback, but they didn’t take that chance so at that time i assumed he was still with melissa. but? now they seem to be doing this thing with rachel? and melissa has been forgotten? i see people in the fandom say that danny is single all the time and i get it because at this point it’s an assumption that makes sense, with how little melissa has been mentioned for seasons now, but we’ve never gotten confirmation of that and it bugs the hell out of me because she’s a character that supposedly played a big role in his life at one point and she was in multiple episodes and now they don’t even have the time for like, one line of dialogue that somehow tells us what’s what? the complete irony here is that i never really liked danny and melissa’s relationship (she is so young for him, and that’s just the start of it) and now i sound like i’m defending it when really i just don’t want this poor woman to be treated so ridiculously. i swear i’m going to file a missing persons report omfg where is melissa #melissadeservedbetter
aside from my bitterness about melissa though - i LOVED this episode. it was tense and painful and i’m as concerned about the danny/rachel hints as the next guy, but it’s not that explicit here and i do like seeing them together as friends so i’m good with it for the most part for now? and there was SUCH good dad!steve content and some amazing steve/danny and the steve-danny-rachel hug killed me as much as i’d hoped and there was a steve and danny hug and a steve and grace hug and the sideplot was great too and i loved seeing tani and koah together more, and i just??? really loved almost every second of it a lot
#h50#9.12#I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS GUYS#i also didn't really reread this after watching the episode because it already took me two hours with how much i kept pausing it#to write all of this#so i hope it's readable oh gosh#*#the melissa mystery

Logan didn’t ask for this. He didn’t ask for his monotonous, studious life to be interrupted in the middle of a storm. He didn’t ask for Charlie to come barreling through the trees, making a racket louder than the crashing thunder. He didn’t ask for a person to sprint from the woods, running headfirst into his house and knocking themselves out.
And yet, here he was.
His name was Virgil.
“Why are you in the woods?” Logan asked, clutching his mug with tensed hands. Logan was not used to social interaction, and worried about freaking them out to the point of leaving.
“I was traveling with a man named Roman,” Virgil said, voice tense. “He was searching for an item, as am I.”
“An item?” Logan said thoughtfully. His fingers tapped against the side of the mug, the ceramic swirling with moving galaxies.
Virgil eyed the liquid-like print and nodded, providing no other information.
Logan shifted in place, staring into his tea. Should he say something? Provide a topic of conversation?
How did one socialize?
“I’m sorry, I just–” Virgil stopped, inhaling slowly and holding his breath, exhaling before continuing. “Who are you, really?”
“Well, I told you my name is Logan,” Logan began, shoulders hunching instinctively. “I’ve lived here for five years. My magic is coloring objects with moving galaxy print, while keeping said objects with all their former capabilities. I travel to the town to obtain resources every other week.”
“Well, that’s certainly...” Virgil almost smiled, hiding his face behind his own mug. “Certainly some facts about yourself.”
“Yes,” Logan said slowly, feeling as if he were missing a point. “Did you want... something else?”
“I mean...” Virgil shifted, crossing his legs on the chair and sinking into the cushions. “After... After Roman, I realized that I shouldn’t keep myself so... closed. I regret not telling him my... my name, and I regret... not... getting to know him, more.” He stumbled over his words, as if not used to talking so much.
“Ah,” Logan said eloquently. He pursed his lips and stared at the wall. “I’m not a very interesting individual, I warn you.”
“I like that,” Virgil blurted, then turned red.
Logan blinked at him in surprise. “Uh.”
“I mean, mostly, that, well, my life is so complicated, so it’s refreshing, to have, simplicity,” Virgil stuttered, curling into himself.
“Oh,” Logan said. “Well. I’m not used to... I’m not good at social interaction.”
“Haven’t talked to anyone recently?” Virgil said.
“N... no...” Logan stared at him. “I am a hermit.”
“I gathered,” Virgil said, covering his mouth with his mug again. “The kids back home would play this game, twenty questions? And they would ask each other questions, to get to know each other.”
“They named asking questions?” Logan said. “Why didn’t they simply ask each other questions and leave it at that?”
Virgil shrugged. “Naming things makes them more fun.”
“Oh, alright,” Logan said, nodding.
There was a beat of silence until Virgil said, “Want to go first?”
“Oh!” Logan startled, sitting straight and blinking at Virgil. “Well, where are you from?”
“I’m from... Metus,” Virgil said slowly, sipping from his mug. “Yeah.”
“Metus is rather far from here,” Logan observed. “You have traveled far.”
“I guess I have.” Virgil shifted again, curling in tighter.
“Are you cold?” Logan asked, already starting to stand. “Perhaps I could find some blankets–”
“No, I’m fine,” Virgil said. Then he stared at the floor, cheeks turning pink. “Maybe you could– I mean, sorry, never mind.”
“Anything you need I will provide,” Logan prompted him but only received a ducked head and darkening ears.
Logan got him some blankets, which Virgil accepted without another word.
“Your turn, I believe,” Logan said, settling back into his own chair.
“If you could have anything in the world, what would it be?” Virgil asked.
Logan realized then how the game was supposed to go. He mused over the question while examining the functions of twenty questions – instead of mere questions, one asked searching questions that would not normally be asked in an average conversation.
“I suppose I’d want...” Logan’s mind swirled through idea after idea. A library with all the books he could ever want, a house with better insulation, a less annoying magic, a family.
Logan froze at that, eyes trained at the floor. A family. That’s right.
“Logan?” Virgil said softly.
“Perhaps a friend,” Logan murmured, hands tight around the mug. He refused to meet Virgil’s eyes. “What’s your favorite childhood memory?”
“Logan...” Virgil said, indiscernible emotions layering his voice. “How long have you been alone?”
“It’s my turn to ask the question,” Logan said instead, arms tensing. His eyes bore holes into the wooden flooring.
“Alright,” Virgil relented, easily reading Logan’s defensive body language. “I would sneak out and climb trees in the woods. A girl would always be there to play with me – her name was Martha. I loved playing with her. She had a fire in her blood.”
Logan’s mug shattered between his hands and he bent over, nearly pressing the ceramic shards into his face. The remnants of the mug dropped to the floor with a dreary thudding noise, and Logan touched his cheeks, his nose, his eyes – his eyes were wet, they dripped onto his fingers, because he hasn’t heard that name, that name –
“Logan, oh my god!” Virgil appeared at his side, gently pulling his hands away from his face and examining the skin there, fingers feather-light as they brushed over the cuts in Logan’s hands, the cuts dripping blood almost lazily over Logan’s fingers and to the floor.
Logan sniffled, watching the wounds with little reaction.
Virgil pulled at his forearms. “Logan, we have to clean up your hands.”
Compliant, Logan followed Virgil’s pull, walking over to a container of water. Virgil poured the water over Logan’s hands, using a towel to wipe periodically. He found a gauze and some medicine, rubbing the solution into Logan’s hands and wrapping them with a single-minded focus.
Logan watched him silently, mind reeling. He didn’t ask for this. He had a simple life. He’d built a simple life.
“Logan,” Virgil said gently. He tugged him back to the wide chair and pulled him into it. With barely enough room for the both of them, Virgil was pressed next to Logan and Logan shuddered; he hadn’t had physical contact for, oh, it must have been a year or so by now...
The fire flickered and Logan stared at it, at the dancing flames and crackling wood.
“What was that?” Virgil finally asked.
Logan touched his drying face and sniffled again, closing his eyes. Eliminating one of his senses seemed to help him gather his thoughts, to be coherent.
“I’m sorry,” Logan said once he felt he could speak. His voice, thick with emotion, sounded like someone else.
“No,” Virgil interrupted. “Don’t apologize.”
“Okay,” Logan said, deciding he was too tired to argue. “I don’t know how to say this.”
“I’ve felt it’s easiest just to say it,” Virgil advised him. “Like ripping off a bandaid.”
“Okay.” Logan kept his eyes shut tight. “I think I’m your childhood friend.”
“My childhood friend?” Virgil repeated, confusion coloring his tone.
Logan waited.
“You mean Martha?” Virgil said, disbelief and shock blatant. “But she– he— you–” Virgil sputtered. “Left, so you came here–”
“My parents,” Logan said monotonously. “Said I was unnatural.”
“Because–”
“I am a girl, yes,” Logan said, flinching violently at his own words.
“No,” Virgil asserted, voice forceful and so quick that Logan opened his eyes in surprise, staring at Virgil’s darkened, grounded expression. “You told me you are a boy. He/him pronouns. I don’t give a shit what others say you are. You say who you are.”
“Biologically–”
“I don’t give a shit,” Virgil said forcefully, reaching up and holding Logan’s face delicately, like he was something to be treasured.
Logan swallowed, feeling liquid prickle at the sides of his eyes again.
“Do you feel like a boy?” Virgil said, not breaking eye contact. “Logan? Do you feel like Logan?”
“I like Logan,” Logan whispered. “That’s why I left.”
“Oh my god,” Virgil pulled Logan’s head into his shoulder, holding Logan as if he were about to fly away. “They told me you disliked me so much you ran.”
“I could never,” Logan said, voice muffled. “They told me I was going to get married and wear dresses for the rest of my life, and they just, kept calling me, Martha, and–”
“I can’t believe it,” Virgil said. “You’re... Logan. My childhood friend. I found you.”
Logan hesitantly snaked his arm around Virgil’s torso. “You found me.”
Virgil laughed. “Only took a storm and a wyrm to do it.”
“Thank god for Charlie,” Logan agreed.
Virgil paused, then pulled Logan back to look him in the eye. “Did you just say Charlie?”
Logan stared at him. “Yes?”
Virgil blinked. “Charlie?”
“That’s their name, yes,” Logan said uncertainly, unsure why Virgil’s expression was suddenly so blank.
“You named the wyrm,” Virgil said flatly.
“I mean, technically, they chose the name,” Logan said. “I went through about a dozen before they landed on that one–”
“That wyrm almost killed me and Roman,” Virgil reminded him.
“They were protecting me,” Logan said, wincing as he realized the extent of the situation. “They hate it when travelers get close to my home, because usually the travelers are actually thieves and they steal my things.”
“A guardian wyrm. Named Charlie.”
“Charlie’s not the only one, of course,” Logan said, unaware of Virgil’s expression. “There’s Nyssa, the gryffin, and Splice, the mermaid, and sometimes Verity stops around the woods.”
A realization dawned on Virgil and he wasn’t sure if he wanted to laugh or cry. “All these magical creatures just decided to protect you?”
“I guess.” Logan shrugged.
“Logan, you’re...” Virgil had to stop and collect himself before plowing on. “You’re the reason this forest is so dangerous.”
Logan blinked at him. “This forest is classified as dangerous?”
Virgil collapsed onto Logan, a disbelieving smile pulling at his lips. “Oh my god.”
“Sorry! I haven’t gossiped recently,” Logan said, voice taking on a teasing edge.
“You’re unbelievable,” Virgil mumbled, keeping his face buried in Logan’s shoulder. “Unbelievable.”
“So I’ve been told,” Logan replied, tightening his hold on Virgil. “I’ll tell them to tone it down, yeah?”
“Yeah,” Virgil laughed. “That’d be good.”
“Okay,” Logan said.
Perhaps he hadn’t asked for this. Perhaps he hadn’t asked for Virgil’s timely arrival, or for his simple life to be interrupted.
But he’d be damned if he didn’t appreciate it.
—
Patton knew he wasn’t coming back. Patton knew, deep in his heart and bones, that Roman, the wonderful, charismatic man, the adventurer, the –
It didn’t matter who he was. He wasn’t coming back.
Patton smiled hysterically, pulling at his hair and falling backwards against the wall of the church, marble pressing at his spine as he slid down, hitting the cold ground with a soft thud. Look look look at the ceiling the floors they stuffed you in the only place they could because they KNOW they know they know –
Patton tightened his grip on his arm, nails digging into his arm. A low-pitched scream stretched from his throat that slowly grew as his thoughts grew louder and louder, overtaking every function of his body, enveloping his mind in chanting –
The doors slammed open and Patton flinched so violently he fell over, curling into a small ball and pressing his forehead against the floor.
“Patton!”
The knight. The man beloved by a prince, the survivor, the wounded.
His voice sounded so clear that Patton almost believed he was here –
“Patton, please, say something.”
A presence by his side, a soft touch to his shoulder, and Patton whined pitifully and curled closer into himself. Tight, tight.
“You’re burning up, but...”
“Go away,” Patton scratched out, throat raw and hurting. “Please. Don’t make this worse than it has to be.”
“They said you’re possessed,” Roman blurted out.
“I’m not!” Patton uncurled somewhat, becoming upright in the process, and glared at Roman through watery eyes. “I’m not possessed! Every damn time I heal someone I–”
He wilted and sobbed into his arms folded over his knees, shying away from Roman’s gaze.
“Patton, I just think you’re lonely,” Roman murmured, gently touching his hair. “And in the need of a moodstone, frankly. I figured something out.”
Patton didn’t answer, sniffling morosely.
“Your magic is similar to that of a moodstone. The pain and emotions you heal don’t disperse, they harbor themselves within you – all you need is a moodstone to release the excess and you’ll be yourself again.”
“I haven’t been myself for seven years,” Patton whispered, staring at nothing. “Every night the emotions get louder and I can’t keep them in anymore. They stuck me in the church. I used to live on the little house with a chicken coup, nearby the bakery. I had little chickens and I would – I would go, to the bakery, just to talk to the baker, and–” Patton choked on a sob.
“You’re wonderful, Patton,” Roman said softly. “You are yourself, simply intensified and overwhelmed. The townspeople don’t see it. But you’re wonderful and your magic does not warrant quarantine.”
“I can’t be,” Patton said. “I can’t be wonderful because I’ve hurt people.”
“We’ve all hurt people,” Roman opposed gently. “That doesn’t make you less of a person.”
“I can’t handle this,” Patton whispered harshly.
“It’s okay to ask for help,” Roman said.
“I stopped asking for help when they stopped giving it!” Patton shouted. His eyes trained on Roman’s, dark and stormy. “I heal. That’s my job. That’s why I’m still here. They would have drowned me and called it an accident, because every night I lose my grasp on emotions and I have to let it out, Roman, because I’m bursting at the seams, I can’t handle myself! And they hate me, they hate me because they can’t do anything other than bar me in a church and lock their doors because I’m the best healer they’re ever gonna get!”
“Oh, Patton,” Roman said, sadness and horror coloring his tone. “I’m so sorry.”
“I deserve it,” Patton said hollowly. “I deserve–”
“No,” Roman interrupted, voice suddenly lined with steel. “You do not deserve any of this treatment. You have an ailment just like they do, and they are unable to cure you, to help you. You deserve as much help as they do.”
“I don’t, I really don’t,” Patton said.
“You do,” Roman insisted. “I promise you, Patton, you–”
“Don’t promise!” Patton yelled. Then he quieted down, staring at the cold, unforgiving floor. “Please don’t promise. They always break their promises.”
“Okay,” Roman said. “Then, I am positive you deserve help.”
You’re wrong you’re wrong you’re wrong because I am a bad person and you need to leave–
“Why are you here? It’s nighttime,” Patton said.
“I heard you scream,” Roman said. “Screaming means help, Patton, the townspeople simply cannot see that.”
“No, they’re afraid,” Patton said. Something bubbled under his skin, a need, a want, pulsing and pushing. He wondered for a moment of the consequences but, when had his meticulously careful verbiage effected how others saw him?
“Your screaming frightens them, yes, but–”
“No, they aren’t afraid of that.” Patton dug his chin into his knees. “I can do more than just heal.”
Patton waited for the words to sink in, for Roman to wordlessly stand up and leave the church, for Roman to tell them all how Patton has officially lost it, for Roman to leave him like all the others.
“When I was five years old,” Roman said.
Patton glanced at him in confusion, limbs instinctively relaxing from his tense position.
“I wanted to play knight,” Roman continued, gazing at the stained glass close to the ceiling. “So we would switch off being the princess, damsel in distress. One of the boys was in the tree, and.”
Roman swallowed, and Patton felt the nerves roll off him in waves, mixing with Roman’s guilt and resolve.
“One of the boys was in the tree and my magic... well. You know how a kid’s magic is. Fluctuating wildly. And while most kids magic was small, this wasn’t a problem, but...” Roman took a deep breath and plowed on. “I lit the tree on fire. The boy ended up with burns covering his body and they covered my fists and wrists with tough fibers which wouldn’t burn.”
“You were young,” Patton said, reaching out to take some of his pain, just to help, because Roman was helping him and would want some in return, of course–
“Stop,” Roman shied away from his hand. “Do not burden yourself over me. My magic, like yours, is more powerful than average and is therefore feared. It’s not your fault.”
“But...” Patton screwed up his face. “That’s my purpose.”
“Your purpose is to be yourself and enjoy it,” Roman corrected. “Especially for you, because you need some TLC.”
“TLC?” Patton asked. “What’s that?”
“Tender loving care, of course,” Roman said flippantly. “Don’t worry, I have that in droves.”
“Oh!” Heat rushed to Patton’s cheeks and he hide them behind his knees. “Oh, but you have responsibilities. Don’t waste time on little old me.”
“Responsibilities,” Roman said, sounding like he’d said something especially disheartening. “I don’t have any responsibilities anymore. Only to find the prince. And my most treasured possession.”
“The prince, and your most treasured possession,” Patton repeated. He sniffled again, rubbing at his eyes and nose. His skin felt taut and dusty warm, and he fumbled for his handkerchief to blow his nose. He glanced at Roman, who carefully watched his every move. “What’s your most treasured possession?”
What did a knight treasure above all else?
“My...” Roman swallowed, eyes falling to his hands. He fiddled with his fingers and worried his lip.
“You don’t have to tell me,” Patton said, trying and failing to keep his disappointment from leaking through his voice.
“No, it’s just...” Roman shrugged. “It’s a knife.”
Patton blinked. A knife. For... for what?
What could a knight need a knife for?
A shiver traveled up Patton’s spine.
What do you need a knife for?
“What kind of–” Patton choked out but couldn’t continue.
“It was given to me at a young age,” Roman said, flinching at Patton’s stuttering. “I think. It showed up at our doorstep mere days after I was born. It holds – I mean, the blade contains...”
“I have a knife,” Patton blurted out, then smacked his hand over his mouth in horror. Oh no no no no no –
“Mine’s... special,” Roman said carefully. “It... oh, promise not to tell anyone, please, Patton?”
“There’s nobody to tell,” Patton said, the words falling out of his mouth before he could stop them. Roman’s expression twisted and he added, “I promise, of course, Roman, I would never betray...”
He left the statement open and hanging.
“It’s connected to my power,” Roman said, voice hushed. “The knife contains my magic. The longer I’m away from it, I lose more of my power, and... well, you know what happens when a mage loses their magic.”
“Oh,” Patton breathed, the extent of the situation settling in his mind. A tense pulse started between Patton’s lungs and he hurt for Roman, water pressing behind his eyes. “Oh, Roman.”
“I know what I’m doing,” Roman insisted. “Don’t worry about me. But that is my goal. To find the prince and the knife.”
“Your knife...” Patton murmured. His finger traced the floor absentmindedly. “Mine is the same. It... it disappeared four days ago.”
“Oh no,” Roman said. “You’re the other... one of... most powerful...” He cleared his throat and massaged his temple. “Alright. Why not?”
“Sorry?” Patton blinked at Roman, who suddenly looked a lot paler than before.
“The legend, Patton, the story, of witches and wizards and knights and demons and monsters–”
“’The blades will lead to victory’, I know,” Patton recited, reaching out to console him. “But we’re not... we don’t have some fanatical destiny, we just received these abilities and a knife to contain them.”
“The blades will lead to victory,” Roman murmured. “One for health and two for strength, three for aid and four for when there’s nothing left to do.”
“Which...” Patton forced the words out of his mouth. “Where did you hear the rest.”
“I have ‘two for strength’,” Roman said slowly.
“Where did you hear the rest?” Patton demanded.
“I found it,” Roman whispered, haunted. “I found the box and all the words were on it.”
“The forth blade,” Patton guessed. “It’s the box, isn’t it?”
“I mean, they’re keys to something,” Roman said. “What does yours say?”
“It said ‘one for health’,” Patton said. The engraved blade flashed behind his eyes for a split second and a deep ache filled his bones. “The stories always have a box and three blades...”
“Yeah.”
“Where did you find the box?”
“In a garden,” Roman said. “When I was maybe ten, and we visited a neighboring kingdom. I snuck over this gate and walked the garden. The box was under a bench and I read it then.”
“Did you... did you take it?” Patton asked, holding his breath.
“No!” Roman said forcefully. Taking a deep breath, Roman recomposed himself and said, “If I took it then they would lose their source of power.”
“Did you meet them?”
Roman pressed the tips of his fingers together before clenching them into a fist. “No.”
“Oh.”
“I’m sorry.”
“No, don’t be. We’ll... we’ll find each other somehow, right?”
“They do in all the stories.”
“So we have to stay positive! We will meet the others,” Patton said, his stubborn nature showing through.
Roman stared at him like he was seeing him for the first time. “You’re very strong.”
“Oh, no, me?” Patton said in surprise. “I like to think positively, that’s all! I used to not, but I would never get anything done, and thinking positively has kept me going all these years!”
Roman’s heart ached but he smiled at Patton, awe in his eyes and resolve filling his veins. “That’s an incredible sign of strength. So many before you would have given up.”
Patton didn’t answer, a small smile flickering across his face. Roman’s heart swelled at the sight.
The sunrise peeked over the hills through the window, shining on the crown of Patton’s head, and Roman basked in Patton’s genuine smile and invisible glow.
—
Damian stalked through town, a scowl prominent on his face. They said he’d left, left the inn, like some sort of hero, and he’d talked to the teenagers and they reported seeing him go to the church, because of Patton’s screaming.
Stupid, stupid Patton and his stupid screams.
Possessed, though. He’d really stretched on that one. Because Damian, of all people, knew Patton was not possessed. But now that newbie, Roman, was going to talk to him and that simply was not okay.
Patton couldn’t have Roman befriend him. Correction: Damian couldn’t have them become friends. Those two specifically – dangerous, dangerous individuals.
Damian knew Patton had a heart of gold and a power to match.
Damian also knew Roman had a knight’s mentality and strength to finish any task he put his mind too.
Together, though... Damian might be in trouble.
No, no, thinking like that was no good. Damian contained endless control, he knew how to walk, how to talk, how to manipulate others specifically to his whims. And if his charms didn’t work, he had an ace up his sleeve.
But Patton, Patton was his sitting duck. His fish in a barrel. Roman couldn’t come in and poke holes in his plan like this.
Damian crafted Patton’s life carefully and harshly, pushing him into a church and closing the doors.
His knife also sat in his pocket, wrapped carefully in fabric.

Forest Whitaker
Forest Steven Whitaker III (born July 15, 1961) is an American actor, producer, and director.
Whitaker has earned a reputation for intensive character study work for films such as Bird, Platoon, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, and The Butler, and for his work in independent films and for his recurring role as LAPD Internal Affairs Lieutenant Jon Kavanaugh on the Emmy Award-winning television series The Shield.
For his performance as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in the 2006 film The Last King of Scotland, Whitaker won the Academy Award, British Academy Film Award, Golden Globe Award, National Board of Review Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and various critics groups awards.
Early life
Whitaker was born in Longview, Texas, the son of Laura Francis (née Smith), a special education teacher who put herself through college and earned two master's degrees while raising her children, and Forest Steven Jr., an insurance salesman. According to DNA tests, his father was of Igbo descent, while his mother had Akan ancestry. When Whitaker was four, his family moved to Carson, California. Whitaker has two younger brothers, Kenn Whitaker, an actor, and Damon, and an older sister, Deborah. Whitaker's first role as an actor was the lead in Dylan Thomas' play Under Milk Wood.
Whitaker attended California State Polytechnic University, Pomona on a football scholarship, but a back injury made him change his major to music (singing). He toured England with the Cal Poly Chamber Singers in 1980. While still at Cal Poly, he briefly changed his major to drama. He was accepted to the Music Conservatory at the University of Southern California to study opera as a tenor, and subsequently was accepted into the University's Drama Conservatory. He graduated from USC in 1982. He also earned a scholarship to the Berkeley, California branch of the Drama Studio London. Whitaker was pursuing a degree in "The Core of Conflict: Studies in Peace and Reconciliation" at New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study in 2004.
Career
Film work
Whitaker has a long history of working with well-regarded film directors and actors, as well as, for a brief period of time, working in direct-to-video films alongside novice actors such as Lil Wayne, Maggie Grace, and 50 Cent. In his first onscreen performance of note, he had a supporting role playing a high school football player in the 1982 film version of Cameron Crowe's coming-of-age teen-retrospective Fast Times at Ridgemont High. In 1986, he appeared in Martin Scorsese's The Color of Money and Oliver Stone's Platoon. The following year, he co-starred in the comedy Good Morning, Vietnam. In 1988, Whitaker appeared in the film Bloodsport and had his first lead role starring as musician Charlie "Bird" Parker in Clint Eastwood's Bird. To prepare himself for the part, he sequestered himself in a loft with only a bed, couch, and saxophone, having also conducted extensive research and taken alto sax lessons. His performance, which has been called "transcendent", earned him the Best Actor award at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival and a Golden Globe nomination.
Whitaker continued to work with a number of well-known directors throughout the 1990s. He starred in the 1990 film Downtown and was cast in the pivotal role of Jody, a captive British soldier in the 1992 film The Crying Game, for which he used an English accent. Todd McCarthy of Variety described Whitaker's performance as "big-hearted", "hugely emotional", and "simply terrific". In 1994, he was a member of the cast that won the first ever National Board of Review Award for Best Acting by an Ensemble for Robert Altman's film, Prêt-à-Porter. He gave a "characteristically emotional performance" in Wayne Wang and Paul Auster's 1995 film, Smoke.
Whitaker played a serene, pigeon-raising, bushido-following, mob hit man in Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, a 1999 film written and directed by Jim Jarmusch. Many consider this to have been a "definitive role" for Whitaker. In a manner similar to his preparation for Bird, he again immersed himself in his character's world—he studied Eastern philosophy and meditated for long hours "to hone his inner spiritual hitman." Jarmusch has told interviewers that he developed the title character with Whitaker in mind; The New York Times review of the film observed that "[I]t's hard to think of another actor who could play a cold-blooded killer with such warmth and humanity."
Whitaker next appeared in what has been called one of the worst films ever made, the 2000 production of Battlefield Earth, based on the novel of the same name by L. Ron Hubbard. The film was widely criticized as a notorious commercial and critical disaster. However, Whitaker's performance was lauded by the film's director, Roger Christian, who commented that, "Everybody's going to be very surprised" by Whitaker, who "found this huge voice and laugh." Battlefield Earth won seven Razzie Awards; Whitaker was nominated for Worst Supporting Actor, but lost to his co-star, Barry Pepper. Whitaker later expressed his regret for participating in the film.
In 2001, Whitaker had a small, uncredited role in the Wong Kar-wai-directed The Follow, one of five short films produced by BMW that year to promote its cars. He co-starred in Joel Schumacher's 2002 thriller, Phone Booth, with Kiefer Sutherland and Colin Farrell. That year, he also co-starred with Jodie Foster in Panic Room. His performance as the film's "bad guy" was described as "a subtle chemistry of aggression and empathy."
Whitaker's 2006 portrayal of Idi Amin in the film, The Last King of Scotland earned him positive reviews by critics as well as multiple awards and honors. To portray the dictator, Whitaker gained 50 pounds, learned to play the accordion, and immersed himself in research. He read books about Amin, watched news and documentary footage featuring Amin, and spent time in Uganda meeting with Amin's friends, relatives, generals, and victims; he also learned Swahili and mastered Amin's East African accent. His performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor, making him the fourth African-American actor in history to do so, joining the ranks of Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, and Jamie Foxx. For that same role, he was also recognized with the British Academy Film Award, Golden Globe Award, National Board of Review Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and accolades from the Broadcast Film Critics Association, London Film Critics’ Circle Award, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, National Society of Film Critics, and New York Film Critics Circle among others.
In 2007, Whitaker played Dr. James Farmer Sr. in The Great Debaters, for which he received an Image Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor. In 2008, Whitaker appeared in three films, first as a business man known only as Happiness, who likes butterflies, in the film The Air I Breathe. He also portrayed a rogue police captain in Street Kings, and a heroic tourist in Vantage Point.
In 2013, after working in several limited releases and independent features such as Freelancers and Pawn, Whitaker has enjoyed a bit of career resurgence, having played the lead role in Lee Daniels' The Butler, which has become one of his greatest critical and commercial successes to date.
Whitaker also starred in the film Black Nativity, alongside Jennifer Hudson, Angela Bassett, and Jacob Latimore. He also co-starred with Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2013's The Last Stand, playing an FBI agent chasing an escaped drug cartel leader.
Whitaker played Saw Gerrera in the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Television work
After completing several films in the early 1980s, Whitaker gained additional roles in multiple television shows. On the series, Diff'rent Strokes, he played a bully in the 1985 episode "Bully for Arnold". That same year, Whitaker also played the part of a comic book salesman in the Amazing Stories episode "Gather Ye Acorns". He appeared in the first and second parts of North and South in 1985 and 1986. Throughout the 1990s, Whitaker mainly had roles in television films which aired on HBO, including Criminal Justice, The Enemy Within, and Witness Protection.
From 2002 to 2003, Whitaker was the host and narrator of 44 new episodes of the Rod Serling classic, The Twilight Zone, which lasted one season on UPN. After working in several film roles, he returned to television in 2006 when he joined the cast of FX's police serial The Shield, as Lieutenant Jon Kavanaugh, who was determined to prove that the lead character, Vic Mackey, is a dirty cop. As opposed to his previous character work, Whitaker stated that he merely had to draw on his childhood years growing up in South Central Los Angeles for the role. He received rave reviews for his performance—Variety called it a "crackling-good guest stint"—and he reprised the role in the show's 2007 season.
In the fall of 2006, Whitaker started a multi-episode story arc on ER as Curtis Ames, a man who comes into the ER with a cough, but quickly faces the long-term consequences of a paralyzing stroke; he sues, then takes out his anger on Dr. Luka Kovač, who he blames for the strokes. Whitaker received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his performance in the series. Also in 2006, Whitaker appeared in T.I.'s music video "Live in the Sky" alongside Jamie Foxx.
Whitaker was cast in the Criminal Minds spin-off, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, that was subsequently cancelled by CBS on May 17, 2011.
In December 2016, it was announced that Whitaker would reprise his role as Saw Gerrera from Rogue One for the Star Wars Rebelsanimated series.
Theatre
Whitaker made his Broadway debut in 2016 in a revival of Eugene O'Neill's play Hughie at the Booth Theatre, directed by Michael Grandage.
Producing and directing
Whitaker branched out into producing and directing in the 1990s. He co-produced and co-starred in A Rage in Harlem in 1991. He made his directorial debut with a grim film about inner-city gun violence, Strapped, for HBO in 1993. In 1995, he directed his first theatrical feature, Waiting to Exhale, which was based on the Terry McMillan novel of the same name. Roger Ebert observed that the tone of the film resembled Whitaker's own acting style: "measured, serene, confident." Whitaker also directed co-star Whitney Houston's music video of the movie's theme song, "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)".
Whitaker continued his directing career with the 1998 romantic comedy, Hope Floats, starring Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick, Jr. He directed Katie Holmes in the romantic comedy, First Daughter in 2004 while also serving as executive producer; he had previously co-starred with Holmes in Phone Booth in 2002. He had previously gained experience as the executive producer of several made-for-television movies, most notably the 2002 Emmy-award-winning Door to Door, starring William H. Macy. He produced these projects through his production company, Spirit Dance Entertainment, which he shut down in 2005 to concentrate on his acting career.
Whitaker and his partner Nina Yang Bongiovi produced the film Fruitvale Station, which won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, as well as Repentance (2014), Dope (2015) and the upcoming Sorry to Bother You.
JuntoBox Films
Whitaker plays an active role as co-chair of JuntoBox Films since his initial involvement as co-chair with the collaborative film studio starting in March 2012. JuntoBox was developed as a social-media platform for filmmakers and fans to share ideas to create films and then collaborate to make them. Since Whitaker joined as co-chair, five projects have been greenlit for production.
Honors
In addition to the numerous awards Whitaker won for his performance in The Last King of Scotland, he has also received several other honors. In September 2006, the 10th Annual Hollywood Film Festival presented him with its "Hollywood Actor of the Year Award," calling him "one of Hollywood's most accomplished actors." He was honored at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival 2007, where he received the American Riviera Award.
Previously, in 2005, the Deauville (France) Festival of American Film paid tribute to him. On April 16, 2007, Whitaker was the recipient of the 2,335th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to the motion pictures industry at 6801 Hollywood Boulevard. He received the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Xavier University of Louisiana in 2009 at the 82nd Commencement Ceremony. He received the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from California State University, Dominguez Hills on May 16, 2015.
Personal life
In 1996, Whitaker married actress Keisha Nash, whom he met on the set of Blown Away. They have four children: two daughters together (Sonnet and True), and his son (Ocean) and her daughter (Autumn) from their previous relationships.
Whitaker studies yoga and has a black belt in kenpō. He also trains in the Filipino martial art of Arnis, under Dan Inosanto. Inosanto is best known for having been a student of the late Bruce Lee and has trained actors such as Denzel Washington and Brandon Lee.
Whitaker's left eye ptosis has been called "intriguing" by some critics and "gives him a lazy, contemplative look". Whitaker has explained that the condition is hereditary and that he has considered having surgery to correct it, not for cosmetic reasons but because it affects his vision.
Activism
Charity work
Whitaker, who is a vegetarian, recorded a PSA with his daughter, True, promoting vegetarianism on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). He is also a supporter and public advocate for Hope North, a boarding school and vocational training center in northern Uganda for escaped child soldiers, orphans, and other young victims of the country's civil war.
Politics
In politics, Whitaker supported and spoke on behalf of Senator Barack Obama in his 2008 presidential campaign. On April 6, 2009, he was given a chieftaincy title in Imo State, Nigeria. Whitaker, who was named a chief among the Igbo community of Nkwerre, was given the title Nwannedinamba of Nkwerre, which means A Brother in a Foreign Land.
Whitaker was inducted as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Peace and Reconciliation, in a ceremony at UNESCO headquarters on June 21, 2011. As Goodwill Ambassador, Whitaker works with UNESCO to support and develop initiatives that empower youths and keep them from entering or remaining in cycles of violence. At the induction ceremony, U.S. Ambassador to UNESCO David Killion described Whitaker as a "perfect choice as a Goodwill Ambassador... he has exemplified compassion in every area of his life, with humility and grace. He does this because it's the right thing to do."
In 2010, Whitaker received the Artist Citizen of the World Award (France).
Whitaker co-founded the International Institute for Peace (IIP) at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey. Launched during the international Newark Peace Education Summit, IIP's mission is to develop programs and strategic partnerships to address cutting-edge issues such as increasing citizen security through community-building; the role of women and spiritual and religious leaders in peacebuilding; the impact of climate change; and the reduction of poverty. IIP operates under the auspices of UNESCO as a Category 2 Center.

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul” - My review
(***WARNING!!! May contain positive opinions!!!!)
I walked into this movie feeling two separate emotions: 1) I was prepared to despise it and whatever downgrade that came along with it. And 2) I still wanted to approach this with as much of an open mind as I could and give it a chance. Apart from the recasting controversy, the surge of downvotes on the film’s trailers on YouTube that surely make A Christmas Story 2 blush (yes, that actually exists), and the scathing reviews it has received on Rotten Tomatoes, you must ask yourself a few questions…does it really warrant the critical thrashing it’s being given? Does it deserve to be shunned away from the rest of the franchise? Is it worth my time just to check it out and see what all the hate is about? Is this just a shameless cash grab to make a quick buck for Fox? Well, let’s dive in and find the answers to these harrowing questions, shall we?
This latest installment in the Wimpy Kid films follows protagonist Greg Heffley (now portrayed by Jason Drucker) and his family getting ready to embark on a family road trip for his grandmother’s 90th birthday. But after a ballpit mishap forever brands Greg as an internet meme known as “Diaper Hands”, our hero decides to use this family trip to his advantage. His plan is to reroute the van GPS to a video game convention so he can meet his favorite YouTuber, an obnoxious, catchphrase-spewing gamer named Mac Digby, and appear in his next video with the hopes that everyone will eventually forget the “Diaper Hands” incident. As the Heffleys hit the road, numerous hijinks ensue, including: another vacationing family with a crazy bearded patriarch who has it out for Greg, faulty car engines, dive-bombing pigeons who have an insatiable hunger for Cheese Puffs, disgusting roach motels, a technology ban that the mother Susan (now played by Alicia Silverstone) reinforces with an iron fist, a baby pig, and several other road movie inconveniences.
Seeing as how multiple DOAWK fans, or at least the ones I’ve come across in my life, can attest to the fact that The Long Haul is one of the weaker books in the series, the fact that they chose to adapt this book for the screen was baffling at best. To pad out the runtime, the screenwriters (one of the them being Jeff Kinney himself) borrow elements from the other books to make everything balance out and have a “cohesive narrative”. For me, the better part of the movie is the last half because that’s where the story gets you hooked and it keeps your interest in just what will happen to these characters on the rest of their journey. It’s the only portion of the film where they feel like they’re a real family and it delivers some heartwarming moments that actually got an “awwww” out of me! The first half is more plodding and meandering, confused on whether or not it should give the characters something funny to say or do and is where a solid chunk of the expected gross-out humor and groaner jokes are, playing out like a Disney Channel recut of the 2015 Vacation reboot/sequel. Be warned, easily disgusted…there’s a barf scene that will literally make you thank the sweet lord that this DOAWK movie was not released in 3D. That doesn’t mean there are ZERO laughs to be found. The comedy is present but is executed awkwardly at times, isn’t exactly up to par with the original movies, and is more scattered and sporadic. You just have to really keep focused to find the particularly humorous moments. Plus, four words: Psycho shower scene homage.
While many fans will disagree, the replacement cast doesn’t really bother me as much as I thought they would (except for a certain rock music-loving older brother in the family but we’ll get to him in a minute). Jason Drucker is aware he’s got some pretty big shoes to fill in taking over the role of Greg but you have to give this kid credit where credit is due. He’s got a bit of a young Zachary Gordon flair reminiscent of Greg in the first DOAWK movie but still manages to make this interpretation of the character something all his own. As for the parents, they aren’t too bad, either. They’re no Rachael Harris and Steve Zahn, but their acting abilities appear to be on both ends of the spectrum. Tom Everett Scott, playing dad Frank Heffley, looks slightly ashamed to be a part of the project but he toughs it out the best he can like a champ, and Alicia Silverstone on the other hand seems like she genuinely had a blast on the set and just enjoyed every second of being there. Bottom line, the brand new cast DOES pale in comparison to the original but they’re decent replacements and don’t half-ass their performances on screen. They were a pleasant surprise.
But then you got Rodrick, played by Charlie Wright. After the trailers were first released, the recasting of Rodrick was what pushed Wimpy Kid fans over the edge. “#NotMyRodrick” was a hashtag that blew up all over social media, resulting in countless upon countless internet memes and edits. I will admit, a lot of those memes are really hilarious. But one would put themselves in denial and figure, “Maybe they’re saving all the funny Rodrick scenes for when the movie comes out but now we’re just saddled with the unfunny material”. But putting the controversy aside, does Charlie Wright do the character any justice? Um…they got that Rodrick is in a band called Löded Diper and likes rock music. That’s really about it. Now, in the books and movies, he obviously isn’t the brightest bulb in the tanning bed but he was still fun. Devon Bostick was clearly going to be a tough act to follow because he brought likability to a character we’re supposed to hate. Plus, he was the original emo dreamboat in many a pre-teen/teen girl’s eye. Wright, however, either over exaggerates his lines or is way too laid back. And even then, he doesn’t really seem to take the role all that seriously and is basically winging it. Out of everyone in the film, they wrote him the laziest by dumbing him down to Patrick Star levels (oh yeah...PATRICK STAR LEVELS!!!) He confuses a hotel safe for a microwave *insert immediate facepalm here*, he literally has the line “We’ve got a pet pig, now that means we’ll get bacon every morning” *insert double facepalm*, eats nine sticks of deep-fried butter only to go on a ride at the country fair and declare “I could totally go for another stick of butter” after PUKING IT ALL UP on said ride, and plenty more but if i list everything, we’ll be here all night. The only “A” for effort he gets is for a freak-out scene near the end of the film and it’s one of the few parts that got me to laugh but I dare not give it away here!
I’m decidedly half-and-half so far, but what are the other elements of The Long Haul that need no nitpicking? The music score and the soundtrack are a lot of fun, the color palette and atmosphere pops off the screen and you feel like you’ve been transported back into the world of Greg Heffley again, and the final scene does get your heart in bizarrely sweet way. I don’t know, maybe I’m just a sucker for that kind of stuff.
My overall thoughts in general?
PROS: Most of the cast is alright, Jason Drucker is a passable Greg Heffley (I think Zachary Gordon would be very proud of him), the soundtrack, the last half is better than the first half because of its heart, only three laugh-out-loud scenes, and its aesthetic certainly feels like a DOAWK film.
CONS: Majority of the comedy comes off as confused and unsure, Charlie Wright as Rodrick (seriously, man, what did they do to your character?), the gross-out humor is too much, most of the jokes fall flat, the first half could’ve been written better, and it somehow feels much longer than the past films but yet it has the shortest runtime out of them all (90 minutes).
FINAL THOUGHTS: I can most definitely understand why critics are tearing this movie apart and why fans would do the same, too. Personally, I’m glad I at least sat down and gave The Long Haul a chance. Is it as great as the original movies? No. But for what it is, it could’ve been waaay worse! Would this have fared better by going direct-to-DVD, done as an animated special for Cartoon Network, or as a Netflix Original Movie rather than be released theatrically? Yes. Is it the trainwreck we all anticipated it’d be? Not really. It’s bad but not horrendous. Am I gonna watch it multiple times like I have with the past films? Nah, one viewing is good enough for me. While it is an unnecessary installment, The Long Haul is harmless and if you watch it only to find yourself loving it, then that’s awesome; it doesn’t make you an idiot or a bad person. It means that at the very least, you were able to find more to love in it than I could. So, if I had to give this a letter grade, let’s make it a “C” or “C-”.
