Drew’s Travel Route (Part 1. Sigh.)

Ok, SO! I said I’d try to figure out the travel routes of the anime rivals, and I’m starting with Drew. First things first, starting with Hoenn, here’s the map- I’ve marked down the probable locations of places that the anime made up where relevant. LONG POST, and I’ve edited the map for clarity’s sake. Also, I am vaguely/loosely taking encounter locations from RSE, you’ll get it later, don’t worry about it for now. 

The beginning of his journey is a logical place to start but also we really don't know. He’s from LaRousse City, which is allegedly off the coast of Lilycove, according to Bulbapedia with no citation. He has three ribbons before meeting May and co., but we have no way of knowing where he got them or when or anything. We’re going to ignore those ribbons for my own sanity and just say ‘somehow he got from LaRousse to Slateport’, because otherwise I’d be factoring Solidad in here and it’s just a whole thing that we’re not worrying about. Fanon tends to agree that this isn’t his first contest circuit, so for all we know he didn’t even start from LaRousse. We just don’t know and we’re not worrying about it, and we're calling Slateport our start point because that's where he debuts. (Personal opinion? He's probably at LEAST been around Eastern Hoenn before, maybe down around the islands (Sootopolis, Mossdeep) at some point and around 121-122-123. We'll just assume he made his way from LaRousse>Lilycove>122>123>128>Mauville>110>Slateport, bringing us to our start point and gathering 3 ribbons along the way, but I'm not mapping that out because I have no real evidence).

So, that out of the way, let’s look at his starting point.

Drew first shows up in AG033 at a beach in Slateport City, where he stays until AG035 Win, Lose, or Drew!. After that, we don’t see him until AG050 Pros and Con Artists, set in Fallarbor Town. Now, Slateport and Fallarbor are far away and have a few different routes. We’re saving the desert route for later (I have my reasons to believe he only went to 111 later on), so north is out. You could also go a bit south to Oldale>Petalburg>Rustboro, OR north and then west through Mauville>Verdanturf>Rustboro. We’re assuming the former, as the latter would mean he visited Verdanturf before and didn’t enter any contests and that just makes less sense to me. Also it doesn’t matter. MAYBE he caught Masquerain as a Surskit in this stretch of traveling but it's inconclusive and largely irrelevant.

So, AG050, Fallarbor. He stays here throughout 051-Come What May!. The next time we see him is in AG061, Disaster of Disguise, set in Verdanturf. He stays here throughout 062 as well. Minor backtracking through 114, 115, and Rustboro, but nothing major.

After this, we see him in AG077, A Fan With A Plan, which takes place in, uh, Rubello Town. 

This is where it gets funky. Rubello Town is somewhere between ‘Littleroot and Fortree’ according to Bulbapedia, which is like saying that New Jersey is somewhere between Maine and Florida. So I took it into my own hands and decided that it’s PROBABLY somewhere around the intersection of Routes 118 and 119, or early 119, headed into Fortree. It’s the only place that makes sense given where May and Co. are in the surrounding episodes. We're really triangulating some shit here. Eventually I should try to figure out where all the fake towns are but that's a project for later. Anyways, Rubello Town, AG077, A Fan With A Plan. That episode deserves its own 'wtf' post tbh. Anyways. We're here.

So, from 118-119ish, Rubello Town, AG077, we then see him again in AG113, Who, What, When, Where, Wynaut (WWWWW). So, there’s a lot going on in this little stretch. It’s a big timegap from AG077-113. First things first, I’m assuming he took a detour through route 120 to catch Absol at this point. Absol debuts all the way in the Kanto Grand Festival, but it makes sense for him to have caught it this early on. So, we’re calling route 120 his next stop, maybe offscreen around AG80ish?

And now, we’re detouring back to Route 111. I agonized over this decision but it feels right to put it here.

You see, at some point Drew needs to have caught a Trapinch. Some of you guys who also trawled the bulbapedia ship pages before they got deleted probably remember that Flygon was specifically caught and trained for the theoretical situation in which he faced against May in the Hoenn Grand Festival. Because, you know, raising a pokemon up to at least level 45 is a thing you do for people you feel normally about. That’s a completely normal investment of time and energy and forethought and care. Anyways, I actually hesitated on assuming that Drew would have seen May as important enough to go out of his way to catch it this early-on, but we are three roses in with blatant flirting in 077, and WWWWW is up next (which people seem to agree is when he's like oh shit, those are emotions that I'm feeling), so it feels like a safe enough bet, and also Drew’s just Kind Of Like That™. Also, there’s no other time later in which it makes sense for him to have time to make the detour while also evolving it before the Grand Festival (and honestly even then we’re pushing it a bit). Any earlier and I doubt he’d have considered her in high enough regard to train an entire pokemon to battle her with (again, very large investment of time and energy to get a Flygon). So, with all that, we’re assuming that he goes back to 111 and catches Trapinch here. 

He also gets a ribbon somewhere in this time gap (his fifth). In the anime, pretty much every town seems like it holds contests. I really don’t know. I’m ASSUMING that on his way to Route 131 (we’ll get there in a second), he picks up a ribbon from some made-up location that we aren't privy to.

Now. Gonna be real. I don’t know where in the actual hell they are in the beginning of WWWWW and his next appearance. Vaguely around Pacifidlog? Two episodes ago they were in Sootopolis, one episode ago they were on some random island, and they’re just in the ocean in the next one so I don’t know. Best I can figure is somewhere around Route 131. Why is Drew out in the middle of route 131? Don’t know. He has all 5 ribbons and isn’t going to Pacifidlog to watch May (something he goes out of his way for later but I digress). I really have no earthly clue why the fresh hell he’s out in 131, but HE IS I GUESS and who am I to question it? Did he just want some ocean time??? I don't know why he's here. Usually him being in out-of-the-way places is because May's there, but no, he's not here for her this time, he doesn't watch the Pacifidlog contest to the best of our knowledge, he's just. HERE. I GUESS.

So. Fine. Whatever. We’re on 131 FOR SOME REASON, he ‘travels’ to Mirage Island if you’d call that travelling, they head back to wherever they were on 131.

It’s more straightforward from here- he heads back to Slateport for the Hoenn Grand Festival, AG121-123. We’re assuming he takes a boat, I’m not sending this dude all the way back through mainland Hoenn. Tbh he has seasick vibes, which several unrelated fics from over the last 15 years seem to agree on for whatever reason, but that’s his problem and not mine. 

SO. FINALLY. END OF HOENN (but not end of AG, there’s that part 2 at some point). We’re all the way back at Slateport- his first and last Hoenn appearance is maybe/probably on the same stretch of beach, intentional or not. And with that, we have his PROBABLE travel route throughout his appearances in the Hoenn section of AG!

Kanto gets its own post because this is over 1k words long and took 2 hours to figure out last night :)))))))

Hello and happy friday! Today I ask this: what’s your all time favorite pokemon episode(s)? Episodes you could watch- or have watched- time and time again, never getting old? And if you wish to talk about it, why is it your favorite?

Oh I love this question. There's a bunch of episodes I'm a really big fan of, off the top of my head I'll list some of my favorites!

EP063 The Battle of the Badge: This episode first aired before I was even born, I saw it for the first time as a kid, and I still haven't run out of things to say about it. It has Implications and I have written so much about that and its ramifications. Genuinely obsessed. Also it was my PalletShipper awakening.

EP110 The Stun Spore Detour: I love a good sickfic episode. This is a good sickfic episode. Like half the cast is incapacitated for the majority of the episode because Ash managed to knock himself and Tracey headfirst into a Vileplume and meanwhile, elsewhere, Jessie did similar, and I just think that's great. Misty is awesome in this one, the way she handles this whole situation--getting to show that she is strong and capable and also incredibly kind (and in the dub, James and Meowth are so grateful for her helping them help their sick friend that they refuse to fight out of gratitude). Also there is something so funny about Jessie going from waxing poetic about how beautiful things are fragile and she's actually dying to, as soon as she's recovered, throwing her snake through some sick children's wall. One time I watched this episode like three times in the span of a week.

HS15 Putting the Air Back in Aerodactyl: This episode is about three characters I love and love the dynamics between so much (the Oaks and Tracey) and it is so special to me. We get to see a very endearing side of Gary here--he's an insecure kid finding his footing on a new path and doing his best, and he wants to make his grandpa proud of him. Fortunately, Professor Oak already is proud of him and tells him as much in a scene that I have so many feelings about. This episode also features one of Tracey's greatest, wildest moments, grabbing onto a moving Aerodactyl. Literally what possessed him to do that.

HS16: Luvdisc is a Many Splendored Thing: Another episode I watched like three times in the span of a week once. It's cute! It's got good character interactions and very funny moments, and it's about Luvdisc which is a Pokemon I'm very soft for.

AG113 Who, What, When, Where, Wynaut: I like ContestShipping. I like when characters I like get knocked unconscious. I like Wynaut, though that's mostly because of this episode, which I was well and truly obsessed with as a teenager in my most hardcore ContestShipper days. I still think it's a great episode, I love May and Drew getting to be alone together bantering and bonding, and how you can pinpoint the literal exact moment Drew falls in love with May. Good stuff.

AG187 The Unbeatable Lightness of Seeing: I am a big fan of rivalries in Pokemon. This is an episode all about how good rivals are for each other, with Ash and May both being at a low point and their respective rivals pulling them out of it. The Ash and Gary-May and Drew parallel is also made abundantly clear in this one in case anyone missed it. I joked once that considering that parallel, Drew having a canon crush on May means one-sided PalletShipping is canon by proxy.

DP053 Tears for Fears: I'm an abuse survivor who sees a lot of their past experiences reflected in Chimchar's arc, and this episode makes me cry cathartic tears. The way Chimchar keeps remembering its lonely and miserable past with Paul in contrast with Ash and company being so kind, and Chimchar expecting to be punished after losing to Piplup, only to be praised instead and be so overcome with emotion it breaks down in tears... that gets me every time.

Honorable mention goes to JN068 Advice to Goh, which first aired when I was having a bad time and cheered me up a lot. I also just think it's a delightful episode, with Ash and Gary falling so easily into friendship despite how long it's been since they last saw each other, and poor Goh (whom I also love) being a third wheel sulking in the background.

Story: May and Drew go all the way.... to the bottom of a waterfall.

Team Rocketness: Wobbuffet Lovers!

Today finds Ash.... standing and screaming at the ocean, Pikachu beside him and going along for the ride because what the fuck does it know, it's a rat and this weird dude feeds him. Brock and May are watching from a rock behind him, the tide starting to come in and separate them from Ash and Pikachu.  May is excited about her upcoming contest, sure that she will win her 5th Ribbon.  Ash and Pikachu are ready to kick off their training when they notice someone approaching the edge of a higher cliff overlooking the sea.  It's Drew! And his Masquerain is blasting an approaching high wave.   They go to meet him as he leaves the cliff, where he flicks his hair out of his face and arrogantly, casually mocks May as he tells her he is on his way to the Grand Festival.  She tells him they'll meet there and he asks if she has won her five ribbons, and she proudly shows off the four she has.  In reply he shows her HIS ribbon case, and all five ribbons inside it! May is shocked, and then appalled when he tells her that the Grand Festival is only six weeks away and there is only ONE contest left to qualify for it - the Pacifidlog Town Contest!  If she doesn't win, she'll never qualify! Thrusting her ribbon case behind her, May is in a panic but insists she'll win her fifth ribbon, an idea that Drew seems to think is laughable.  She insists that she'll prove it by beating him in a practise battle right here and right now!  Given his rather low opinion of her (and his denial of his desperate desire to get into her pants), he is happy to reply....

So on the beach like two samurai of ancient times with oddly familiar names, Dawn and May face off with Ash acting as judge.  Beautifly uses Silver Wind and Masquerain spins through it to dodge, then uses Silver Wind itself.  Beautifly dodges with a somersault, and then.... a giant Magikarp beaches itself on the sand. Sigh, this show is SOOOO predictable! "Prepare for trouble, your moves are lame!" "Make it double, ours put yours to shame!" "We'll cut it short dis time," says Meowth, as he, Jesse and James emerge from the head of their Magikarp Submarine.  They lower back in and hit a button that sucks Pikachu, Beautifly and Masquerain into the Magikarp... then the twerps and Drew! Jesse is shocked, they don't want the twerps! The extra weight means they slam against the wall of the holding pen and smash through it... directly into Jesse's face and crashing down into the "engine room".... i.e, the metal pommel horse that Team Rocket sit on and peddle.

Wobbuffet pops out to happily salute and terrifies Max who stumbles backwards and accidentally hits the Hyper Turbo Switch, which causes the submarine to turn around and rocket deep down into the ocean and explode, sending them ALL blasting off and crashing onto an island in the middle of the sea. Oh sweet, it's going to be one of THESE episodes! Team Rocket wake up in the middle of the woods, not knowing where they are.... but Wobbuffet is missing!  James tries imitating its call while Jesse - also yelling and screaming and trying to beat it to death when it is there - becomes weepy at the loss of her "darling little sweetie pie" then getting angry that this is its fault. Elsewhere, Ash, Brock, Max and Pikachu have landed on the island but can't find Drew or May, who turn out to be in a hot and steamy.... area of shore.  All alone! Oh ho ho, it's going to be one of THOSE episodes! But before ridiculously hot and illegal sex can inevitably break out, a creepy old man comes motoring in on a boat declaring he's coming, he's coming! Oh no, it's going to be one of THOSE episodes! Tying up his boat, he learns from May and Drew how they came there, and explains they're on "Mirage Island", a place that few people find and even fewer deliberately.  Surrounded by Whirlpools and thick fog, it's a place shrouded in mystery.  Drew has heard of it, it is world famous and supposedly crawling with Liechi Berries, which make the best kind of Pokémon.  May doesn't know what that is but gets furious and insists she DOES know all about... and pronounces it wrong which just gets her even madder.  

The man - Roderick - laughs that seeing these two adolescent kids arguing furiously to cover up their deeply humiliating and hurtful lust for each other reminds him of a Pokémon and asks if they'd like to see it.  They don't see the double entendre at all and say they'd like to, and he offers to lead them further into the forest, warning that it is easy to lose your sense of direction in there. Brock has found this out for himself, as his compass spins wildly.  Ash had sent Swellow up to look for May and Drew but it hasn't seen anything.  Brock decides to find a river or stream and follow it down to the shore, and they call out Corphish and Mudkip to help them find a river. Corphish goes and looks behind a tree and Mudkip sniffs the ground in case some rivers are hiding, and then both point in the direction they believe the river to be. Meanwhile, May is doing her running narrative thing again, using her fingers to form a camera and narrating their journey.  Drew scoffs that she doesn't get out much (it's ALL she does!) and she retorts that he just doesn't know how to have fun, and then Roderick stops them to ask if their friends would have any idea what to do if they got lost.  May stops to think for a moment (probably imagining the destruction and devastation that a lost Ash trying to think his way out of a problem would cause) and then suggests that Brock would.  Roderick suggests they find a river and follow it back to shore then, as they're more likely to find Brock and the others that way. But.... they were on the shore just before and he brought them into the forest to see a Pokémon.... ahh forget it! Jesse is getting increasingly frustrated walking around calling for Wobbuffet, but then she and James hear a happy little,"WYNAUT!" call and see a flash of a blue blob rushing away out of the corner of their eyes.  They chase after it excitedly, while Meowth sighs that he'd tell them it is a Wynaut.... but why bother? Roderick, May and Drew have found the river, and Roderick explains how he found the Island in the first place 40 years earlier searching for Liechi Berries.  He was swept overboard and awoke on the shore being stood over by the silhouette of a Wynaut.  He passed out again and woke up in a cave full of Liechi Berries, as far as the eye could see.  Drew notices Liechi Berries growing out of the riverside cliff and moves over to get a closer look... and the rock breaks underfoot and he and May plummet down towards the water.  Roderick calls out a Bellsprout that fires out a Vine Whip, May catching it and trying to pull a Spider-Man to save Drew from becoming Gwen Stacey.

She manages to grab his hand but this causes hers to slip out of its grip on Bellsprout's vine.  They both crash into the water, rushed downstream and over a waterfall, breaking the surface with Drew unconscious and May forced to keep him afloat.  This takes all her strength and prevents her from swimming against the current to the shore, and she yells at Drew to wake up because she isn't strong enough. "WYNAUT!?! WYNAUT!?!" comes the question thrown at her from a multitude of blue blobs vaulting at speed alongside the raging river. Well because she's a little girl you jerks! Save her! HEY TRAINERS WHICH OF THESE POKEMON IS THE FINAL EVOLUTION OF BELLSPROUT!?! GARDEVOIR, VICTREEBELL OR SUNFLORA!?! THE ANSWER IS THE ONE YOU'D LEAST WANT TO PUT YOUR DICK IN! The Wynaut bounce through the forest, leaping high over the river and linking arms to form a monkey chain... a monkey chain of rescue!

The other twerps have found the base of the waterfall and are calling out for May and Drew when Roderick comes down on a rope calling out to them.  He explains what happened and Ash seems to get confused about tenses and believes that they're HEADING for a waterfall... the waterfall that they're currently standing at the base of. Inside the Wynaut's Cave, May wakes up Drew and points out their saviours to him.  For the first time we're actually shown the Wynaut not in silhouette, which is confusing since it's not like it wasn't clear what they were going to be.  May checks them out with Dextina (and calls it Dextette!?! Boooo! The name is Dextina!) and learns they're the pre-evolved form of Wobbuffet, live in herds and sleep in caves for warmth.  One of the Wynaut's offers them both Liechi Berries and they chomp into them enthusiastically... till the aftertaste kicks in.

May sticks her hands between her legs and giggles that she feels happy, and Drew seems pleased to. Oh like you wouldn't! That night, an exhausted Team Rocket have crashed, moaning that they've been looking for Wobbuffet all day without food and they're miserable and hungry and wherever Wobbuffet is it is probably getting fed. And Wobbuffet happily agrees!

It patiently and pleasantly says its own name while munching on Liechi Berries and wandering about between them as they moan they think they can hear it... and see it.... and it's "da real ting!" They demand to know where it got the food (as it has just finished eating them all!) and it points off in a direction and they rush away to find the food, leaving behind a patiently pleased Wobbuffet. Roderick is leading the twerps along the river explaining his origin and how he has learned over the years to navigate through the whirlpools around the island to keep an eye on the Wynauts.  Max spots footprints on the shore and guesses they belong to May and Drew, and they set to following them. Meanwhile May has been invited by the Wynaut to join in their little writhing party, and she calls out her Pokémon and rushes in with the blue blobs and their oddly phallic headbumps, wriggling around amongst them in joy while Drew insists he is happy to just watch.

Oh, so he's one of THOSE types of guys, is he? Meanwhile, Wobbuffet has taken Team Rocket to the Liechi Berries, where they're enjoying the taste... and then hating the aftertaste.  Meowth figures out what type of berries they are.... and how valuable they are! Not long after, May's Wynaut Writhing Party is broken up by the arrival of Team Rocket in their Patiently Pleased Wobbuffet Balloon complete with giant suction nozzle hanging underneath it. Why did they spend all day walking through the forest when they could have flown by balloon? Team Rocket suck up all the Liechi Berries AND May, though oddly the Wynaut are not grabbed up.  Team Rocket aren't so sure that people would pay through the nose for a twerpette (depends what kind of customer you're looking for really) but Jesse laughs that they can sift her out and throw her away with the pips later on.  Drew chases after the balloon, but once it passes over the cliff and above the tree tops he is pretty much fucked.... till the Wynaut form a rescue chain and allow him to slide down it, bumping his balls the entire way. Team Rocket have tied up May as they continue sucking up berries from the trees in the forest, and she can't even reach her Pokeballs.  Drew whispers to get her attention but she stupidly replies out loud and gets Team Rocket's attention. Meanwhile, Roderick and the boy twerps have found the Wynaut's cave, but it is empty with no sign of Drew or May.  They figure that Team Rocket has something to do with this (how do they kno.... ahh fuck it) and set off to find them. Meanwhile Team Rocket are fighting Drew's Roselia, Wynaut using Counter to prevent attacks from getting through, forcing Jesse to demand Wobbuffet go in there and prove it is better. But they'd just stand there staring at each other waiting for the other to do a move! But before it can do anything, Roselia fires in a completely different direction, making Team Rocket laugh till they realise it is using its moves to cut May free.  She drops down to safely, and then the twerps arrive, Pikachu blasting the fuck out of Seviper.  James sends in Cacnea to use Pin Missile, and Meowth says fuck it all and just whips out a gun and shoots at the twerps!

But before they can be incinerated, the Wynaut form a wall before the twerps and use Safeguard to protect them,

allowing Pikachu to blast the fuck out of them with Thunderbolt (knocking the collected berries free) before a combination Silver Wind from May and Drew's Pokémon sends Team Rocket blasting off again.... and admiring the wonderful sunrise! The next day, everyone is being sailed away from the island by Roderick, who shows them a photograph of him as a sneering, cruel-faced younger man amongst all the Wynaut.  He explains he used to be known as Roderick the Wrong-doer, until he met the Wynaut and became known as Roderick the Kindly Gentleman. Or so he says, the only man who knows how to get to the island full of rare and valuable berries! He remembers to give May a basket of berries and she tells Drew they'll help her at the Grand Festival.  He points out that she stills needs to win her fifth ribbon, but she is convinced she will do so, and then the Grand Festival is only six weeks away!

Moral Learnt: It's easy to be "kindly" when you have access to a private reserve of valuable fruit your "friends" harvest for you.

We watched AG113 and in my excitement over a scene I made a more coherent but unfortunate typo:

Folge 113 fand ich echt gut. Dadurch, dass Drew auftaucht, wusste ich schon, dass es ne wichtigere Folge wird und da ist das feeling anders. Auch schön auf der Isso Insel und nette Interaktionen zwischen den beiden Rivalen.

Haruka Tankentai passt bei so einer mysteriösen Insel ja wie gerufen :D Kam lange nicht mehr vor.

Waren viele schöne SZenen dabei. Ich mag die Fogle echt, habe aber dennoch wenig zu beschreiben. War einfach Fokus für Drew und Maike und weil ja bald das erste Festival ist. Solche Rivalen Folgen sind halt nett und die haten so eine ja noch nicht. Die kleinen tease Interaktionen bei denen sind immer nett
