Growing up I lived in an all-female household and all of the women in my family were either working or in school. I was so used to just seeing women in my life that I barely registered men as being real. My only exposure to men were my uncles and cousins-- who mostly stayed at home while their wives worked. So growing up I just thought women naturally dominated the world and did everything while men were just there and had no purpose or contribution other than loving women and looking back on this I realized I just grew up in an irl Barbieland

National Handbag Day
From totes to satchels to clutches, treat yourself to a new handbag. With so many options, you’re sure to find something that reflects who you are.
It’s no secret that many women love handbags, sometimes perhaps a little too much, but who would have thought that it would ever get to the point where an entire day of the year would be put aside especially for handbags to be celebrated in all their glory?
Learn About National Handbag Day
“I want someone to look at me the way I look at a Chanel bag.”
Well, believe it or not, National Handbag Day exists, and real people actually do take some time out of their day to celebrate it and pay tribute to their beloved collection of handbags as well as all those they wish they could afford.
It is a day when women talk about handbags…even more than usual, both on the Internet, through blogs, and in real life with friends. It is a day where the greatest designs and designers are discussed and celebrated.
And also a day through which the purchase of a new handbag, or bags, for the more extravagant, can be justified and needs no explanation.
We are sure all ladies will appreciate this date. After all, it is often remarked that women keep everything but the kitchen sink in their handbags! While you should never go into a woman’s handbag, if you did, you would probably be shocked by the sheer number of different things inside. And so, it is only right that we pay tribute to such an important accessory. A handbag is our trusty companion; it goes everywhere with us.
Of course, you don’t need to be female in order to celebrate this trend. There are a lot of bags on the market today that have been created for men. In fact, the oldest purse known dates back 5000 years, and it was worn by a male; Otzi the Iceman. Men used to carry purses so that they could hold all of their coins.
While handbags are more popular with women today, designers in Europe in the ‘70s revived this trend for men as well. This is something that has only gotten more and more momentum. In fact, there has been a much more diverse range of accessory bags for men that have been marketed since the ‘90s.
In the United States, the styles for men that are more common tend to be those that are variations on messenger bags or backpacks. They tend to have more of a unisex or masculine appearance. However, it’s not to say that the industry is not thriving. In fact, the worldwide trade in the men’s small leather goods and bag sector is $4 billion per annum.
History of National Handbag Day
“My biggest fear is that when I die, my husband will sell all my bags for what I told him they cost.”
In order to understand the history of National Handbag Day, we need to delve a little bit deeper into the history of the handbag. Purses were worn by early modern Europeans for the sole purpose of carrying coins. They were created using leather or soft fabric, and men wore them just as regularly as women did.
Young girls were taught how to embroider clothing during the 17th century. This was considered a skill that was vital for marriage. Not only this, but it helped them to craft truly stunning handbags.
Fashions in Europe changed in the late 18th century. They moved towards bags that had more of a slender shape. They were inspired by the silhouettes of Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece. Ladies wanted purses that would not look untidy or bulky in their appearance. This resulted in the creation of reticules.
Reticules is a term that is used to describe bags that had wrist straps and were made of fine fabrics, for example, velvet and silk. They became highly popular in France first and foremost. After a short while, their popularity spread to the United Kingdom, and they were considered indispensable here. The trend was not adopted by men, however. Instead, they used pockets, which had started to become popular in trousers for men, as well as purses.
It was during the Industrial Revolution that the modern handbag, pouch, clutch, or purse thrived in the United Kingdom. This was partly attributed to the increase in railway travel.
Samuel Parkinson, a confectionary entrepreneur and industrialist from Doncaster, ordered a site of different handbags for his wife. When he was traveling and ordering some trunks and cases, he realized that his wife’s purse was too small for everything required. Plus, the material that it was crafted from would not have withstood the journey.
Because of this, he decided to order different bags in different sizes for various occasions for his wife. He requested that the bags were crafted using the same leather that was used for his trunks and cases. This is how the first set of luxury handbags were created, as H. J. Cave of London adhered to the orders of Samuel. These are the sorts of bags that you would recognize today!
However, it was not all plain sailing for H. J. Cave, as you may have expected. Although he continued to create and advertise these handbags, a lot of critics said that they were unnecessary. Some critics even said that the heavy material and size of the bags would break women’s backs. After 1865, H. J. Cave stopped promoting the bags as a consequence. It was not until 2010 that the production of handbags was resumed by the brand.
How to celebrate National Handbag Day
“I’m very organized these days, and I keep my life in my handbag, like most women.”
It goes without saying that the best way to celebrate National Handbag Day is to treat yourself to a new handbag. There are so many different handbag styles to choose from nowadays, from totes to satchels. This means that you should have no trouble finding a handbag that is right for you. No matter your individual style, color preference, or the belongings that you intend to store within your handbag; you should have no trouble finding something that is right for you. Why not donate your current bag to a charity store or sell it online in order to make way for your new bag?
You can also get involved with National Handbag Day on your blog, YouTube channel, and social media platforms. A lot of bags have stories behind them, so why not share this with your followers? You can show them the different bags that you own, and tell them the story behind the bag. This is a fun way of using National Handbag Day to engage with your followers, friends, and family members.

//I cannot for the life of me Reblog @alwaysadolphin’s posts about the sheer madness that went on behind the scenes of both comic series and TV series of W.I.T.C.H., so, here I am copy-and-pasting the first revelation regarding the cluster-cuss.
I’ll reblog later with my opinion because all this information is taking me a LONG dang time to process…
From @alwaydolphin, here is their reproduction of an interview with Canepa and Barbucci, and just let me interject beforehand: I’m am just shocked at how poorly Disney treated them! Shockéd! *coughsarcasmcough*
as long as im posting these deep production tidbits from w.i.t.c.h. I should probably also track down that old Canepa interview where she talked about being turned away from Disney for four years until Disney begrudgingly took the project on, published it, and then bragged about how they always knew it would be a smash hit when it broke sales records bc I think about that a lot
Sceneario.com : What do you think of the manga genre? I am thinking in particular of “WITCH”?
Canepa & Barbucci : What is good with the authors of mangas is that they can tell a period of life that we Westerners always try to hide: adolescence. I think that explains the huge success of the manga with teenagers … and nostalgic adults! It’s very difficult to work for this type of audience, there is no survey or marketing plan that’s deemed it worthwhile!
W.I.T.C.H. succeeded because it was born spontaneously between three people who introduced entire phases of their own adolescence, without “reinterpreting” it from an adult angle, going against the proposals of a service marketing manager ! Witch is currently published in 75 countries, sold over 40 million copies, to Japan where it was reworked by Japanese artists in their black and white style. We started creating Witch in June 1997, when the word “manga” was downright banned at Disney. It’s incredible ! While today, in society, it is on the agenda … A bit late now, it is now public domain. However, since its first punlication in spring 2001 in Italy, out of our control after the second issue (this remoteness is our own, but it’s a long story!) and that of the historic creator Elisabetta Gnone, the scenario took a very family turn, a little too feminine and much less introspective. For a wide audience of girls from 9 to 11 years old. Adolescence, the true and the most adult, is really distorted by the well-meaning Disney, in the last episodes. A great damage, in our opinion. It was also born for a mixed public, up to 15 years old. Disney has lost this age group for at least 10 years. They wanted it at all costs, but still can not get it back! These are the boys of video games and mangas, far removed from the “Good” Disney! Witch would have had the strength of a Japanese shojo comic.
Look only in France! And without adding gadgets to the magazine, ostensibly female, which increase sales but bring nothing in quality comics. Without wishing to be great mythomaniacs, we were sure that Witch would be a success. And Disney has never been convinced. On the contrary ! You can not imagine how many doors have been closed to us. We fought a good two years against a managerial system that did not want it. It was only thanks to the audacity of the then director of women’s magazines at the time, E. Gnone, and the open-mindedness of one of the American leaders that the magazine was able to appear. Moreover, here in France, after a single year of publication, it caused the name of the magazine that published it to change: “Minnie mag" became “Witch mag”! We are very proud of what we did with this comic, and it is always thanks to Witch that we decided in 1998 to try a new experience together: Sky Doll. And from time to time we think about 40 million copies !!! CHILLS…
Sceneario.com : What graphic benefits did you get from your Disney experience?
Together : Disney is an excellent school to become professional: you learn to work a lot and quickly, without getting too attached to your job. Graphically, on the other hand, the effects are often devastating: one risks the standardization to an impersonal style, which one will escape with difficulty.
Sceneario.com : Why did you leave Disney?
Together : For many reasons: to create something for us … and finally have control and copyrights, to no longer have to participate in depressing marketing meetings, to work in an environment where quality is not optional, to progress professionally and artistically! And also because of a lawsuit against Disney (still in progress)* for the rights of WITCH, since 2001. Is that a good enough reason? > :)
*This lawsuit was still pending in 2008, however it appears that some sort of agreement was reached eventually, as the crux of the case was that Canepa and Barbucci had no proper credit as series creators, possibly a response from Disney’s higher ups to Barbucci and Canepa’s departure from the project - for years, only Elisabetta Gnone was given any form of recognition for the role of series creator. With the 2017 worldwide reprints, this has been changed to acknowledge all three, in addition to Francesco Artibani, who was instrumental in persuading Disney to give the series a chance in the first place.
Oh here’s the specific quote I was thinking of, which I’ll have to hunt down the source of because tv tropes never provides any damn sources
"We conceived of "W.I.T.C.H.” together with Elisabetta Gnone, the then director of girls publications for Disney. We worked for three years in secret on it and she then presented the project to the big bosses at Disney. They thought that this project was crazy, a sure-fire bomb, complete waste of time, and that mangas wouldn’t have a chance in Europe anyway (!!!). However, we didn’t let ourselves be led astray and worked for another year on it anyway, with a tiny budget and without publicity. And then the series became a worldwide hit. The official version from Disney is, of course, that “W.I.T.C.H.” is a product of their brilliant, visionary marketing strategy…the end of the series was then taken out of our hands, we actually had something a lot more intelligent planned for it. Now, as you can see, Elisabetta Gnone and the two of us no longer work for Disney…a really sad story.“

BHM: Autobiography of Malcolm X
I am a little late because it’s already mid-November and I’ve only just finished “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” that was meant to be reading for Black History Month in Oct ahhaha.
Anyway, I was looking forward to reading this because I admit as much as I knew that Malcolm X was an icon and role model for civil rights movement for the Black community and Muslim community worldwide, I did not know specifically what he stood for. More importantly, I did not understand his journey. I heard snippets of his talks from the Nation of Islam days and then some during his Hajj journey. These snippets confused me most of the time because they were at times, contradictory.
In 2013, I was at a Malaysian event for youths and they asked us to shout out notable Muslims, so Malcolm X came to mind. Muslim, famous, black, American, (different from the other figures that everyone else named, for eg, Salahuddin, Hasan Al Banna etc) I shouted his name.
“Malcolm X!” The room stilled and even the MC was stunned. He brushed his shock off quickly and said that he could not be counted in this list because he was a controversial figure. I am ashamed to say that even though I was thrown aback but that statement, I did nothing to learn more about this man and why he was so misunderstood.
So fast forward 4 years, I am glad I dedicated three books to 3 Black figures and I am glad to finally understand Malcolm X as he himself wishes to be understood.
His autobiography is a great read, I took a while to read it because I was re-reading certain chapters. His life is truly remarkable.
Who was Malcolm X?
Tumblr media
I think this section can be answered by his book – YALL SHOULD READ IT PLEZ. The whole time I was reading his book I kept thinking that Allah’s tarbiyah (development of the self) is really tailor made.
Malcolm X (he claimed that his slave name was Malcolm Little, adopted by slave owners so he disowned his surname and referred to himself as X) was also known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz.
Malcolm Little, was born in Omaha, Nebraska. He grew up in a myriad of locations in the United States including Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Lansing, Michigan, Boston, Massachusetts, Flint, Michigan and New York City. He was assassinated in New York in 1965.
Malcolm X was raised by a Baptist minister, he had an understanding of Christianity in his youth. He led a life of hustling, crime, drugs, dancing, women etc. (When we watched the movie, my younger brother was so confused, he didn’t know Malcolm X’s past). This was so important in hindsight and just shows Allah’s wisdom in putting him through so much pain and suffering. This period was so important in terms of him understanding racism, systemic racism, the attitudes of White people, the attitudes of Black people and the different struggles, poverty cycles that are violently placed on the Black community.
“I believe that it would be almost impossible to find anywhere in America a black man who has lived further down in the mud of human society than I have; or a black man who has been any more ignorant than I have; or a black man who has suffered more anguish during his life than I have. But it is only after the deepest darkness that the greatest joy can come; it is only after slavery and prison that the sweetest appreciation of freedom can come.” – Malcolm X
He was in prison for seven years. Honestly, for me, these chapters were the most captivating and it truly showed how pivotal this time in confinement was for his journey. He discovered Nation of Islam in jail, as well as the importance of reading and knowing the language of your oppressors.
“I certainly wasn't seeking any degree, the way a college confers a status symbol upon its students. My homemade education gave me, with every additional book that I read, a little bit more sensitivity to the deafness, dumbness and blindness that was afflicting the black race in America. Not long ago, an English writer telephoned me, asking questions. One was, "What's your alma mater?" I told him, "Books.” – Malcolm X
 Autobiography of Malcolm X review
Tumblr media
Stage 1: The Nation of Islam
Before he went to Africa and for Hajj, Malcolm X was quite a bit more militant (I’m not placing a value on this word, it’s neither moral nor immoral. He was just fiercer and less willing to sit defenceless/passively.  He said things like:
I am a Muslim, because it’s a religion that teaches you an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. It teaches you to respect everybody, and treat everybody right. But it also teaches you if someone steps on your toe, chop off their foot. And I carry my religious axe with me all the time. – Malcolm X (not from Autobiography: https://hollowverse.com/malcolm-x/#footnote_2_6100)
His period of his life from Chapters “Savior” to “Out” was intense. We get an understanding of the physical, emotional and systemic violence and racism that went down in the US against the Black community. I got an understanding of how Nation of Islam was an organised Black nationalist movement that had a religious rhetoric (and also a very specific unorthodox/fringe understanding of Islam).
As a Muslim myself, when I was reading about the practices and the rhetoric of Nation of Islam, I immediately knew that the organisation was not religious per se. The practices and rituals were not orthodox (what Muslims around the world do). It is particularly a US creation and institution, that can’t be found in Sunni, Shi’a, Sufi, Wahabbi teachings etc.
Nation of Islam was most defined by its leader Elijah Muhammad, who put forward a very clear, conservative code aimed at black spiritual, mental, social and economic improvement --- using Islamic rhetoric and toughing on some aspects of Islam but not truly Islamic? Its interesting because I felt as though Islam was used solely as an anti-thesis to Christianity, aka “the religion of the white man/the oppressor”.
They called for/preached about:
-          The complete separation of races
-          the created narratives and mytic views of the creation of the Black man
-          Black separatism
-          Black capitalism: economic self-reliance and empowerment
-          Return of African American to Africa / creation of a separate state
Read more here.
Stage 2: Transition post Hajj/Africa
Reading his recollections of how he was betrayed and how he broke off with the Nation of Islam was actually heart breaking. And we see this too often, when the time is dire and in need of unity and strength, we see organisation breaking apart with different allegiances and leaders being goaded by power and delusions. For someone who was loyal and so committed to the cause, I felt the pain and emotional confusion of Malcolm X.
This was when I realised what a great man he was. Through and through, Allah kept seeing that there was a diamond in the rough, misled by the system, by circumstances and by people. He was tested in terms of his sincerity to the Truth and in this phase we see it manifest.
It really is quite sad that we were not able to witness the development of his philosophies and how this more refined, more open understanding of Islam and the situation in America could have played out. But Allah knows best.
For more detailed understanding of his life please read the book! Or read here.
In 1963, Malcolm X travelled to Africa, the Middle East and Europe where he met white people of whomhe could find no reason to hate, no matter what colour they were. Furthermore, Malcolm X discovered hypocrisies and deceptions within the Nation of Islam that caused him to question his allegiance to the organization. At this time, he changed his socio-political worldview as well as his religious tone, saying things like:
[Islam] is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem. Throughout my travels in the Muslim world, I have met, talked to, and even eaten with people who in America would have been considered white, but the white attitude was removed from their minds by the religion of Islam.
“America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem. Throughout my travels in the Muslim world, I have met, talked to, and even eaten with people who in America would have been considered white, but the white attitude was removed from their minds by the religion of Islam. I have never before seen sincere and true brotherhood practiced by all together, irrespective of their color.”
― Malcolm X
His commitment to Truth and speaking it to power.
He was an important figure and an inspiration to all of us in terms of speaking Truth to power – truth in terms of speaking out against the oppressor and its systems as well as being committed to searching for the ultimate Truth.
“I’ve had enough of someone else’s propaganda… I’m for truth, no matter who tells it. I’m for justice, no matter who it is for or against. I’m a human being first and foremost, and as such I’m for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole.”
Powerful quotes
Tumblr media
(Reading his book was one experience but searching up his speeches, now THAT was another experience. He was really really charismatic, mashaAllah)
“So early in my life, I had learned that if you want something, you had better make some noise.”
“Hence I have no mercy or compassion in me for a society that will crush people, and then penalize them for not being able to stand up under the weight.”
“And because I had been a hustler, I knew better than all whites knew, and better than nearly all of the black 'leaders' knew, that actually the most dangerous black man in America was the ghetto hustler. Why do I say this? The hustler, out there in the ghetto jungles, has less respect for the white power structure than any other Negro in North America. The ghetto hustler is internally restrained by nothing. He has no religion, no concept of morality, no civic responsibility, no fear--nothing. To survive, he is out there constantly preying upon others, probing for any human weakness like a ferret. The ghetto hustler is forever frustrated, restless, and anxious for some 'action'. Whatever he undertakes, he commits himself to it fully, absolutely. What makes the ghetto hustler yet more dangerous is his 'glamour' image to the school-dropout youth in the ghetto. These ghetto teen-agers see the hell caught by their parents struggling to get somewhere, or see that they have given up struggling in the prejudiced, intolerant white man’s world. The ghetto teen-agers make up their own minds they would rather be like the hustlers whom they see dressed ‘sharp’ and flashing money and displaying no respect for anybody or anything. So the ghetto youth become attracted to the hustler worlds of dope, thievery, prostitution, and general crime and immorality.”

July 17, 2019: Columns
Willa Mae Lankford, this one’s for you…
By KEN WELBORN
Record Publisher
Note: The Record’s Editor, Jerry Lankford, was blessed with a mother who was one of the kindest souls I ever knew. Willa Mae Lankford would have been unknown to me except for Jerry, and I thank him often for allowing me to get to know this wonderful lady. Willa Mae was a faithful reader of my column and would often call me with a kind word or a comment, but no column I ever wrote made her laugh and reminisce like the one which follows today — my Fourth of July Mother-in-Law from Hell column. Thank you Willa Mae, I miss you.
During the Fourth of July week, and, for most of my adult life, this story has come to mind around this time of year.  Well, truth is, it hits me at other selected moments, too.
This event took place nearly 50 years ago, during my association with the family of my first wife, Debbie - the Hamby’s of Purlear.
Her father’s name was Albert and, as you might imagine, through the years I got to know his brothers.  Among them were Woodrow, Chelsie, and Grady, the preacher.
It was a long-standing tradition in the Hamby family to have a big picnic on the Fourth of July. The Fourth was a special holiday to those Hamby brothers.  Albert was a veteran of World War II who had fought on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day.  He and his brothers served their country proudly. They knew all too well the price of freedom, and never took it for granted.
The two Hamby brothers I remember best from those days are Woodrow and Grady.  Woodrow was a big man who enjoyed life to the fullest.  He always had a smile on his face and something of a twinkle in his eye.  He also had a thick head of beautiful wavy, silver hair - with a matching silver mustache.  I used to say if I had to have gray hair, I would hope it could be just like Woodrow Hamby’s.
In those days, Woodrow worked for James Richardson at the Foster-Richardson Rest Home on 421.  I’m not sure what Woodrow’s job there was, but I feel comfortable saying he wasn’t the chaplain.
Grady Hamby, on the other hand, was indeed a chaplain, theologian, preacher, minister, and an all around righteous guy.  It usually didn’t take him long to tell you about it, either.  Grady lived away somewhere, and it was always something of an event when he returned to Wilkes County.
At least, it was to him
Well, on this particular Fourth of July, the Hambys, along with assorted in-laws, outlaws, and hangers-on, gathered for the annual picnic.  The food was, as always, wonderful.  Stony Hill Baptist Church-wonderful, in fact.  The only real exception where the food was concerned, was that of my mother-in-law, Shirley Jean Ina Marie. She was forever trying to repackage some of Colonel Sander’s chicken, or a frozen pie, as her own.
The picnic was held under a shelter, with the food on one end and tables on the other.  On the end with the food stood Uncle Woodrow, sweating profusely as he tended hamburgers and hot dogs on a charcoal grill.  You could smell charcoal lighter fluid all the way from Purlear to Big Ivy.  At the other end of the shelter was the Reverend Grady - expounding, pontificating and, in general, holding court as only he could.  Truly, Uncle Grady loved the sound of his own voice.
Everyone was getting pretty hungry, so the oldest brother, Chelsie, called the gathering to order.  After a greeting, and after recognizing his wife, Mae, as the best cook on the premises, Chelsie asked his brother, Grady, to return thanks.
Grady was proud to oblige.
He grabbed onto one of the poles, which held up the shelter, leaned back and began to do what appeared to be squat thrusts.  I thought he was warming up for a marathon run, or was getting ready to work out.
I guess in a way, he was.
After loosening up for a while, Grady began to pray.  Now folks, I have been to a lot of reunions and homecomings, and I have heard a lot of blessings, but this one capped the stack.  Uncle Grady went way past being thankful for the food and a safe journey, and quickly moved on to conditions in the state, the nation, and the world.
All the while that Grady prayed, Woodrow stood silently puffing and sweating over the hot dogs.
Grady continued the blessing; clearly planning to leave no stone unturned.  Before we knew it, he had eased seamlessly into something of a sermon and had several of Debbie’s cousins squirming.
About that time, the fire blazed back up and Woodrow could wait no longer.
“Wind it up, Grady!” Woodrow barked, “My weenies are burning!”
There was a thunderous silence, broken only by my uncontrollable laughing, and a soft “Amen” from Uncle Grady.
The weenies were saved, but Woodrow and I were not.
My mother-in-law never forgave either of us.
Encourage our Israeli friends
 By EARL COX
Special to The Record
July/August 2019 marks thirteen years since the month long 2nd Lebanon War. Ehud Olmert was Prime Minister. George W. Bush was US President. Kofi Annan led the United Nations. The Iron Dome was not yet operational. Those leaders have changed, the Iron Dome is now a superstar, but Iran’s terrorist Hezbollah leader Nasrallah remains. Although threats have increased with missiles and tunnels, Christian support for Israel has multiplied, too.
Often folks ask what can be done to encourage the people of Israel and how Christians can play a role.  While everyone has a different mission, here’s one example of how The Lord led a group of Christians back in 2006.
A few days after the Second Lebanon War, I placed a call to my executive assistant and began by saying, “Arlene, I think the Lord wants us to go to Israel as soon as possible.” Her surprised response was, ”Earl, why would we go now?” Aside from feeling pressed by The Lord to make the trip, the thought which came to mind was, “When friends are in crisis, true friends go and stand with them.” A full-force organizational whirlwind began and in 7 days Arlene, along with my wife, Kathleen, recruited 25 Christians to journey with us to Israel.  Some did not even have passports but they signed up on faith and God made a way for passports to be processed almost overnight. When asked about our agenda, Arlene succinctly put it in four words: ENCOURAGE OUR ISRAELI FRIENDS.
The trip was a working solidarity mission rather than a classic Biblical tour. We set our schedule day by day as we had no time to map out a plan.  For several years prior, God had been opening doors for me to senior ranking Israeli officials.  This proved invaluable as I reached out to these contacts to schedule visits and briefings.  Our group traveled to Haifa where the mayor welcomed us to his city with a briefing and refreshments at Haifa’s municipal building. He spoke about the harmonious history between Arabs and Jews in Haifa and how “the Hezbollah War is hurting all people in the city.”
Officials at Rambam Hospital then welcomed us with a briefing and allowed us to visit civilians and IDF soldiers alike. We walked from room to room leaving smiles, encouragement, and prayers behind. We learned that Rambam Hospital is staffed by skillful Jewish and Arab doctors alike who treat everyone who comes through the doors of the gleaming, state of the art facility. At Rambam, we also visited their bomb shelter teeming with 75-100 children including those of the hospital staff. Beforehand, we managed to run into a store and buy some toys to distribute. With their children nearby, the Rambam staff could continue treating the war-wounded patients with the assurance that their own children were safe.
On another day, we rolled into Tiberias only to find a “ghost-town’ in the usually bustling tourist destination loved by Christians worldwide and where Jesus spent so much time. The few people we encountered were business owners and security personnel. We finally found an open restaurant and when several employees saw us walk in, they treated us like celebrities. Tears filled their eyes and expressions of surprise and gratitude came pouring out. Even the mayor came to welcome us. Everywhere we went our message was clear and simple. “We are Christians from the United  States. We are friends who are here to stand with you.”
We traveled north again to Rosh Pina where arrangements were made for an IDF spokesman to brief us. During his talk the “red alert” air raid sirens began blaring warnings of incoming rockets forcing the group into bomb shelters. A Katyusha rocket fell nearby causing the ground to actually quake. The IDF Colonel expressed the value Israelis place on human life saying, “I’m sad and concerned to see innocents killed. To protect ourselves against Hezbollah is very complex. Hezbollah recruits poor people by promising to make them strong and happy. Now they are human shields. Israel wants peace. Not one Israeli is happy about war but Hezbollah is happy when there’s a missile strike and overjoyed when Israelis are killed or wounded. Now Hezbollah is a military monster and it’s impossible to have a clean war. To extract cancer, we must open it.”
In Rosh Pina, everyone in our group faced a serious decision. The Lord pressed upon me to go further north to the front lines to encourage the men and women of the IDF standing ready with tanks and awaiting orders. I asked the group to pray before making a choice - go to the front lines, or return to Jerusalem. Half decided to go to the front lines while the rest traveled south to Jerusalem with a mandate to remain at the Western Wall to pray for our friends, IDF, and all Israelis. Our team made it to the front lines due to hiring a brave driver. Imagine the IDF soldiers’ shock to see American civilians there! Honestly, we looked like typical American tourists wearing shorts and hats with cameras around the necks of many.  Tank battalions were lined up single file along the side of the road. We stopped so that the team could walk up and down the lines, giving out small American flags on sticks, shaking hands, offering prayers for safety, and words of comfort. I’m sure some of those soldiers are still talking about those crazy Christians. We spent the night in a hotel where the world’s major media were also camped out. No one really slept as bombs fell most of the night rattling the windows. The next day we boarded the van making our descent on curvy roads.  We were the only vehicle (outside of IDF tanks) traveling these roads as Katyusha rockets landed on either side for miles. It’s a mystery to me how we were permitted to travel this road and even more of a mystery that we had a willing driver (who, by the way, was very well paid).
Finally, we reunited with the part of our team which stayed and prayed for us in Jerusalem.  But, our mission was not over.  War impacts everyone.  Not just those on the front lines.  Next stop was a senior citizens home in Jerusalem where elderly people sat waiting out the war, praying for their grandchildren in the IDF and IAF. All had been evacuated from the north.
We hugged the elderly men and women and grasped their hands. While hugs, smiles and hand-holding are universally understood, through a translator we shared our message of friendship. Tears puddled in their eyes and we later heard their message back to us: “We are one.” And that is exactly the message we wanted to communicate.”
While the media didn’t report the displacement of Israelis, over a third were either in bomb shelters, evacuated south or left Israel altogether. Needless to say, tourists were not flocking to Israel at that time. Therefore, even when we rode the buses in Jerusalem, we made it a point to announce, “We are American Christians here to encourage you and let you know that we are your friends. You are not alone!” For many, this was a positive turning point in Christian-Jewish relations.
Two days before we were scheduled to fly back to the United States, we made a decision to visit Magen David Adom in Jerusalem to donate blood. As you can imagine, there was a blood shortage. When the staff saw 25 of us walk in, they were initially very surprised and then extremely grateful.  Never had they experienced so many American Christians wanting to give blood at the same time.  For them it was a surreal moment.  To us, it was a privilege.  Giving blood seemed like such a natural thing to do but one that spoke loudly in terms of the love for Israel we wanted to express. Thank God for the  help of the bi-lingual nurses as all the required forms were in Hebrew.
As it was then, so it remains today.  Arabs and Jews are under constant threat from terrorists in Lebanon and surrounding countries. God’s heart, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, loves ALL people but HE has a special place and profound role in history for the apple of HIS eye, the Jewish community and the land of Israel - their ancestral homeland.
If you are planning a trip to Israel, and I hope you are, ask God how HE would have you to bring love and encouragement to HIS people. Just be open and obedient to HIS reply.  I know the 25 “crazy Christians” who embarked on this journey with me back in 2006 had a major impact on all those whom we encountered.  Now, 13 years later, there is still more to be done.  Please remember to pray daily for the peace of Jerusalem and for all of Israel.
Christmas in July
By CARL WHITE
Life in the Carolina
West Jefferson is situated for a lot of enjoyment.
It’s a nice drive up the mountain and it’s cooler than the lower elevations. The people are friendly and if you enjoy quaint walkable sidewalks with a good amount of public art, you are likely to enjoy your visit.
Several years ago, we visited the Christmas in July festival. It was a great event. I recall that was when we had our first interview with well know musician and acoustic instrument luthier Wayne Henderson. We have enjoyed our visits with Wayne over the years and have a great appreciation for his work and encouragement for talented young musicians.
This year, I visited the 33rd Annual Christmas in July Festival on Friday. The weather was comfortable, and the diverse music seemed to be enjoyable for all those in attendance. After the presentation of the Color Guard and the singing of the National Anthem, muskets were fired. It was a respectable blending of patriotism and heritage, honoring the past and those who have and do serve.
There was much excitement when the honored guest showed up.  Mr. and Mrs. Claus arrived on a vintage fire truck and made their way to the stage area. Everyone seemed pleased with the greetings from the jolly couple. With a few words from Santa, Christmas in July official kicked off. The food vendors were busy, and the music went on for hours. It was a comfortable feeling of old and new friends getting together.
I had the opportunity to talk with good number of people and enjoyed greeting several dogs who were also in attendance with their humans. I had a nice chat with Jeff Martin from Jefferson who is now in his mid-20’s. He shared stories of his youth, when his family visited Christmas in July. At that time the event was held on Main Street. His family attended every year and he recalled how much fun he and his siblings had visiting all the vendors and playing games. With only smiles he shared these memories and said it was a special time.
When I meet younger people who are excited about their local and hometown festivals, it’s reassuring that these events will have a future.
The West Jefferson Christmas in July Festival is administered, produced and entirely worked by volunteers. It’s a labor of love that celebrates mountain culture, heritage and traditions and it all started to celebrate the Christmas Tree industry. Ashe County is ranked among the top areas for Christmas Tree growers in the United States and the area has sent its share of Christmas trees to the White House.
What a wonderful way for volunteers to honor the Carolinas and celebrate their hometown. I hope that the same spark of excitement and purpose that inspires current volunteers will also inspire younger volunteers. We understand it’s a lot of work and commitment. However, when you go to bed with aching feet and a sore back the night the event is over, you know that you have had a part of something very special.
All the smiles, laughs, chicken on a stick, pictures and good times are in part because of YOU. It’s a wonderful thing when we celebrate life together and, in the Carolinas, we have many great opportunities to do so.
One thing is for sure, if you enjoy a nice mid-year visit with the man in red, he certainly has a vested interest in showing up at a Christmas in July Festival in a place that is a national leader in growing Christmas Trees.
See you in West Jefferson friends.

As many of you are aware, WWE Network is pretty packed with all sorts of content. And as you may also know, we here at Place to Be Nation love long term, in depth projects. So, as part of this initiative, members of the PTBN Staff are choosing programs that coincide with this week in history and after watching each program, they will share their thoughts, notes and recommendations with our readers. So, settle in and enjoy this epic ride through wrestling history!
Show: Black Saturday 7/14/84
Best Segment:
Dave Hall:  Paul Orndorff’s interview. This was the only segment that had any life or interest. Orndorff spoke well, and with conviction. His comments about Mean Gene being bald and women leaving their husbands when they see him made me sit up and take notice. Thank You “Mr Wonderful” for a wonderful interview.
Calum McDougall: Definitely the opening to the show. You get the classic Worldwide theme and then in walks Vince McMahon. The visual of Vince talking whilst the words “World Championship Wrestling” are in big bold letters behind him was a surreal sight, I can’t imagine what it would’ve been like for the Georgia Championship Wrestling diehards back in the day.
Jacob Williams: Just for historical reasons, Vince’s opening was best. It was the most interesting part of the entire show.
Steve Riddle: To me, this was pretty obvious and that is Vince McMahon walking into the studio and standing in front of the “World Championship Wrestling” sign. This was a huge move for Vince to obtain the timeslot on TBS to balance what he had on USA at the time, but it came with such a huge backlash as Georgia Championship Wrestling loyalists were not happy about this. It would end up leading to Ted Turner bringing in Bill Watts so he could get rid of Vince and that would ultimately lead to the long war between Vince and Ted that would peak during the 1990s and the Monday Night War.
Brian Bayless: Nothing on this show was good but because it was surreal and historic, the opening with Freddie Miller in the TBS Studios cutting it over to Vince McMahon so he could shock the world and introduce WWF in this time slot.
Best Match:
Dave Hall: NONE of them… but if pushed Adrian Adonis & Dick Murdoch vs SD Jones & Nick DeCarlo
Every match on this show sucked. This one just sucked the least. At least in this match SD Jones and DeCarlo got some offense in, and looked slightly dangerous at times. Adonis actually looked like he was starting to put on his weight, but he and Murdoch sold well for Jones and DeCarlo. Their finisher looked absolutely brutal: an early version of the Doomsday Device, and they looked like the killed DeCarlo with it. The best of a sorry bunch of jobber matches.
Calum McDougall: The tag team title match was fun. It was cool to see the Adonis and Murdoch team, and it was in front of a crowd who were totally into it which helps my enjoyment of any match, a hot crowd can turn an average match into a good one. The finish of the match was pretty cool because it had the sense of danger about it, Tony Garea wasn’t lying when he said he could broken his neck!
Jacob Williams: Adonis and Murdoch in a solid enhancement tag opener against SD Jones and Nick DeCarlo was enough to take it on this show. Adonis did some fun bumping for the faces, who got a nice bit of offense in. We even got a double team finisher, which is a cool surprise in 1984. I’m not gonna file this one as a hidden gem or anything, as it was more of a winner by default compared to the rest of the show.
Steve Riddle: This was a show with some pretty slim pickings in terms of the matches, but I will end up going with the Studd/Brazil match with the tag match a close second. Considering where he was in his career at this point, Brazil still looked somewhat good in terms of his look and Studd was about to hit probably the peak of his career at this point, and they had a decent match here with Brazil actually getting some offense in before putting Studd over strong. This was a solid win for Studd over a legendary name which makes sense considering what was coming for him later in the year.
Brian Bayless: The wrestling was terrible but since it was short and at the time he was excellent in the ring I’d go with Iron Sheik squashing Ron Hutchinson. It also had the most heat on the show.
Most Cringeworthy Moment:
Dave Hall: Alexis Smirnoff’s interview. This was possibly one of the worst interviews I have ever saw. One criticism of the modern product is that wrestlers have to learn scripts for their promos. Well this felt like Smirnoff was reading cue cards or had memorised words. There was no charisma, no feeling, and no interest. It was dull as dull could be. I don’t think he even said anything worth remembering. And to top it off, I didn’t even realise he was a part of the company at any stage, so this must have been his “cup of tea” in the big time.
Calum McDougall: I was cringing at the Brian Blair interview, he just kept going around in circles and the poor guy had to get brought back on track by Mean Gene. It highlighted why Gene was such a good interviewer more than Blair as a wrestler which wasn’t really the point of the interview.
Jacob Williams: Every time Vince was on screen hyping the new WWF overlords to the Georgia fans, things felt real weird, and he even looked uncomfortable, like he knew deep down that this would be a tough sell.
Steve Riddle: Considering they already had an evil Russian in Nikolai Volkoff, I have no idea why they decided to push Alexis Smirnoff as he looked like nothing more than a cheap knockoff of Ivan Koloff. An honorable mention here is how cringed the fans of Georgia Championship Wrestling must’ve felt when they turned on their TV and saw Vince McMahon on their show.
Brian Bayless: The Alexis Smirnoff interview was just embarrassing and why did they even have him speak or give time to begin with seeing how he was not being featured on TV?
Funniest Line/Moment:
Dave Hall: Paul Orndorff takes the award this week with his line “When I come on the screen the divorce rate goes up as women leave their husbands.  It was original, funny, and stood out. That’s all that needs to be said
Calum McDougall: Alexis Smirnoff’s accent was hilariously bad. His Russian sounded more Scottish in some point than my accent does! It actually sounded like an impression of me doing a Russian accent, it was just awful.
Jacob Williams: Alexis Smirnoff told Gene he would use the power of “cossack,” whatever that might be.
Steve Riddle: Anytime the Iron Sheik gets a microphone, he is always memorable as he proclaims Iran is the best and calls out Sgt. Slaughter who he was in the midst of a hot feud with. An honorable mention to the random fan audibly calling Big John Studd “chicken” when he was stalling on the outside.
Brian Bayless: Sheik calling out Slaughter after his win and saying he was a “fat soldier” drew a slight chuckle from me.
Highlights:
Dave Hall: I am not sure there are any.  The only highlight was Mr Wonderful’s interview, which ended up being the only segment of interest on the entire program. I did enjoy seeing Jesse “The Body” Ventura in the ring, but that is about it.
Calum McDougall: Vince McMahon calling a double team move a “Double Elbow Butt”, you can see why he just called them all manoeuvres after a while. Gene being an absolute trooper when he talks about the “best in the world are in the WWF” and then bringing out Brian Blair with a completely straight face. Anytime the Iron Sheik has the microphone is going to be a highlight and just repeatedly going “Iran Number One! Where’s that fat soldier?!” is just peak Sheik.
Jacob Williams: Obviously seeing the Vince opening in its original form was a fantastic piece of wrestling history. Since the matches were pretty poor, even by early 80s TV standards, the promos, while not great themselves, were really the only other highlight. Gene usually does a great job making backstage segments at least fun. I enjoyed hearing Tony Garea sound like a Robin Williams character on commentary. Gorilla calling a Jesse match is cool to look back on. Like I mentioned in Best Match, not a lot of in ring highlights outside of the tag.
Steve Riddle: Cheesy 80s opening; The time when house shows were treated with importance; Adonis and Murdoch were such an underrated team; Interesting spot for the WWF magazine; Always funny seeing Freddie Blassie with a turban on his head and claiming to be an “Ayatollah”, Sheik making quick work of a ham-and-egger is always fun to see; Bobo Brazil looked fairly decent at this point in his career though it was weird hearing of a potential comeback; Studd was looking at his peak by this point and Brazil does the right thing putting him over; Vince was a pretty good play-by-play commentator during the 80s before he became bombastic in the 90s; It was a bit strange that this debut show was mainly a showcase for heels as there were no faces highlighted at all; Paul Orndorff was at his arrogant best here as he was clearly being groomed for a big run
Brian Bayless: This show was awful from top to bottom and only has value for historical purposes.
Lowlights:
Dave Hall: The entire show sucked dirt. While it was nice to see Jesse in the ring, the match was horrid. The Iron Shiek’s squash was so fast I am not sure it warranted being a squash match. Big John Studd’s “bearhug” nearly put me to sleep in his match against Bobo Brazil, which was probably the worst of the lot.  Mr Fuji and George The Animal Steele was aweful, and Vince’s monotonous repition of the same line began to drive me mad.
Calum McDougall: I never like Mean Gene on commentary, he’s obviously one of the best backstage but I don’t particularly like him behind the table. The Jesse Ventura match was a bucketful of awful, the only thing that was gained out of this was that I learned the name of a player on the 1984 Vikings team. Studd/Brazil is not what you want to be putting on a show to highlight the best of your promotion. And you’re debuting in a new and prominent timeslot, so why oh why are Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant or Roddy Piper nowhere to be seen?!
Jacob Williams: The vast majority of the matches, the bulk of the show, were just plain dull. Jesse is notoriously lacking as a wrestler. It was extremely disappointed to not have any strong babyface presence on this show, especially when they introduce this to potential new fans. How do not at least put some kind of Hogan promo on this show so the audience has someone to root for?
Steve Riddle: Making the offering a highlight show instead of featuring original matches in its debut episode; Always funny to see S.D. Jones built up like a big deal when he was just a jobber; Tony Garea was about as bland a color commentator as you could get; It’s a good thing Jesse was such a great talker and was able to transition into being a commentator because he wasn’t a good wrestler; Alexis Smirnoff; the jobber Sheik faces looked like he just came out of a high school gym
Brian Bayless: Where to begin. First off, the matches were not in studio but rather from house shows and TV tapings. The talent given promo time never should have been allowed to speak to a new audience. The action was awful and I cannot imagine a match in 1984 worse than Bobo Brazil vs. Big John Studd. Why not give a video package on some of the hot angles and big stars instead of these bad matches and interviews? Also, at the beginning, notice how much of a point Vince made it to tell the audience how big and jacked the wrestlers were as a selling point for the show. Not every fan is obsessed with physiques like Vince.
Wild Card Baby!
Dave Hall: Classic Commentary Award: Vince McMahon’s repetition in his introductory segments really began to wear thin. For a man who had fronted WWF programming since the 1970s, he seemed to only know two lines in this show: “Coming up next” and “And then from there”. I always enjoyed Vince on WWf Superstars as I was growing up, but on his own as a host he was unbearable, and I sure hope the production crew gave him some more lines before the next time he fronted the camera.  At least we didn’t get “What a maneuver”.
Calum McDougall: Most Colorful Hair: Jesse Ventura’s half-Steve Austin, half-Asuka effort was a sight to behold. This was maybe the time for The Body to embrace the bald.
Jacob Williams: Most Complete Form Possible: Some audio difficulties during one of Vince’s segments made his voice sound demonic like a Chicago record played in reverse. Given the situation, maybe its symbolic?
Steve Riddle: Random Commentator Appearance: I cannot ever remember a more random guy to use as a color commentator than Tony Garea as he was not good in that role, and he was more suited to be the wrestler he was at the time and that is putting guys over in the ring.
Brian Bayless: Best Tidbit: In 1984, Georgia Championship Wrestling occupied this exact timeslot on WTBS. Vince bought the stock of the company from the Brisco Brothers (Jack & Gerald). In fact, the Brisco’s briefly teamed together in WWF later in the year. On this date, many fans tuned in expecting their regular NWA action but were shocked when Vince McMahon and his WWF showed up on the screen. Viewers were largely unhappy and I believe around 500 called into WTBS and complained. This was a major move in Vince’s plan to make the WWF a national promotion. In the end, the move to WBTS failed and several months later, NWA programming returned to that timeslot.
Final Thoughts:
Dave Hall: This was the first time I had ever seen this show, as it was not part of what was shown in Australia as I grew up. I was not sure what to expect. I had heard that when it aired that there was a lot of outrage. Now I know why. Vince starts the show by promising the best wrestling action, and then delivers four horrible squash matches and some very bad interviews. I am certain that the viewers at the time were probably seeing Ric Flair master class interviews each week, and then they get Alexis Smirnoff and George Steele. I was nearly ready to write to WWF and complain about this show, and it has been over 30 years since it aired. If you are thinking of checking it out… DON’T.  The 1 point is for Paul Orndorff’s interview. Everything else should be burned and never shown again. 1/10
Calum McDougall: This show is an interesting one because of the historical context of it. I can only imagine what it was like to turn on the TV at 6:05 and see Vince McMahon’s face. It started off well with the Tag Title match and was pretty inoffensive for the most part but you have the Fuji/George Steele segment, and a Big John Studd v Bobo Brazil match and then you realised you’re not in Kansas anymore. It wasn’t a bad show but it’s must have been half a world away from what had been on the week before. Grade 4.5/10
Jacob Williams: After the novelty of the opening segment of Vince introducing the takeover, this just felt like a bunch of stuff haphazardly thrown together. I usually really enjoy wrestling television of this era, but nothing on this show felt like it mattered or even did a good job of pushing the trademark WWF characters to a new audience. I can’t even imagine the reaction of southern fans who were likely predisposed to disliking the WWF in this situation. This debut gave a good indicator of why the ratings tanked, and the program didn’t last. Grade 3/10
Steve Riddle: Overall, this ended up being a pretty bland show in terms of a match perspective, but it was clearly a very historic show in terms of what it would lead to. This was a shrewd move by Vince to take the timeslot on TBS to go with his syndicated shows on USA, but it ultimately didn’t take off like he thought as the fans were furious with this move. Not to mention how upset Ted Turner was which led to him bringing in Jim Crockett Promotions to take the spot from Vince, and that would lead to the long war between Vince and Turner that escalated during the 1990s. While this experiment for the WWF was a failure in the end, it was still a very historical moment in wrestling history even though the show itself was fairly below average. Grade: 3.5/10
Brian Bayless: This was about as bad as it gets in terms of introducing a product to a new audience. The top talents were not featured and they gave a new audience a “B” show filled with terrible action and interviews and by first glance seems like Vince was more set on buying out his competition rather than put out a quality product for this timeslot. Only has value for historical purposes. Grade: 2/10
