Private Collection 🔴 **CLOSING RECEPTION EXTENDED TO JUNE 27! 26 Mercer ST @bws.gallery I’m so grateful for the opportunity to join the conversation with my art. Thank you to @bws.gallery for the space to show and for believing in me. Only the beginning and here’s to more! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤️❤️ ________________________ Behind The Walls, Lies Our Foundation. 54x54 Inches Oil on Canvas I was inspired by the James Baldwin and William F Buckley debate in 1965, where Baldwin expresses “The American Dream is at the expense of the American Negro”. In this piece, I’m looking to shed light on the foundation of America. This Victorian era home is depicted with a giant hole in its center, opening a window into the true foundation of its original builders. The whole in the wall can also take the form as a “family portrait” of sorts, where the occupants would normally hang their own family portrait. Our country’s history is seldom told from the perspective of those who were force to build it. Here’s my addition to the conversation. I look to illustrate the engine behind the luxury, overlapping Americas’s perception and our truth. To see my work on a gallery wall in Soho is surreal to me. It brings me perspective on how fortunate I’ve been in the past year, considering all of the things that have transpired. Thank you to @bws.gallery and @riccowrites for believing in the vision and including me in theirs. The Closing reception for the Current Show “The Black Man Can” featuring a couple of my works is on display until Jan 23rd. This piece is part a curation inspired by the works of Dorothea Lange. More to come on this series, but thank you to @chris_mac73 making a new home for it. Hope you enjoy it! Please make sure you check out the show before it’s over! A bunch of great artist are on display! Portrait In Profile When I prepare for a new painting, I often think about colors I want to work with. I think about which colors should be warm and cool, and what emotions those colors can evoke. I also think about what’s been lacking in my work and which colors I haven’t used in a while (or at all). I even look at paintings from other artist that I admire to see what colors they used and why I’m drawn to it. Whatever leads me to something new. Which colors are the most interesting to you?? #jaemelo #newyorkartist #artistofinstagram #nycpainters #creativeart #portraitpainting #iconicportraits #afrolatino #dominican #afrolatinoartist #realism #modernart #nycportraitartist #paintingartist #photography #dreadlockstyle #kadirnelson #kehindewiley #blackout #gagosiangallery #dreadlocs #locs #julianschnabel #moma #colorprofile #selfie (at Bronx, NY) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQOSW80nGER/?utm_medium=tumblr

HOW TO: Paint a 5ft portrait in 8 hrs! Well not exactly…. Although this is close to a finish, I feel I have to go back in and spend another couple of hours to touch up and enhance some areas. When I first started painting big, I thought that I’d spend more time painting because it was more surface area than my traditional illustration sized paintings (which were 18x24 inches at the biggest). What I came to find out was that it was almost the same amount of time spent per piece, just me using bigger brushes to make up the difference for more coverage. I think it’s also a testament to how much I improved in my decision making skills since my time at UARTS a decade ago. Make sure you’re following to stay tuned for the final reveal! #jaemelo #newyorkartist #artistofinstagram #nycpainters #creativeart #portraitpainting #iconicportraits #afrolatino #dominicanartist #afrolatinoartist #realism #modernart #nycportraitartist #paintingartist #jamesbaldwin #dreadlockstyle #kadirnelson #kehindewiley #blackart #gagosiangallery #howtopaint #paintinginprogress #paintinginspiration #livepainting #moma #DorotheaLange (at Da Boogie Down Bronx) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQCKqZtnhpX/?utm_medium=tumblr

Imagination Series: 1 and 2 of 4(tbd) As I work on completing my current series of paintings, I’m also working away at some side projects. One of these side projects happens to be strictly fueled by my own imagination and how I applied it as a child. In this land of make believe, I envisioned colorful landscapes and majestic animals, all interacting with the imaginary world I created. The portraits are of figures that represent a part of me in my imagination at different stages of life, past, present and future. There’s no real direction other than the memories of the games I used to play as a child. My mom always told me she wishes she paid for me to go to acting school as a child, and I wonder where I’d be if she did/could’ve. Enjoy these peaks, more work coming soon! ***Follow me, @jaemelo for more art! #jaemelo #newyorkartist #imagination #emergingartist #artistofinstagram #nycpainters #creativeart #contemporaryart #portraitpainting #iconicportraits #afrolatino #dominican #africanartcollectors #afrolatinoartist #realism #modernart #nycportraitartist #paintingartist #jamesbaldwin #dreadlockstyle #kadirnelson #kehindewiley #blackart #gagosiangallery #thedeancollection #tallerjaemelo #moma #DorotheaLange #buffalokids #buffalo (at Bronx, NY) https://www.instagram.com/p/CP1enZqnigj/?utm_medium=tumblr

Thank you to everyone that’s been able to view the incredible works at @bws.gallery, which also features my piece “Behind The Walls, Lies the foundation”. It’s been a week since our opening reception and I can safely say this curation is one of the strongest I’ve ever seen, and definitely the strongest group show I’ve been part of. Thank you @riccowright03 for welcoming me to the Black Wall Street Family, and I look forward to collaborating on many amazing projects together. **The Gallery was vandalized Monday morning, the same day as the 100 year anniversary of the Tulsa Massacre, but it hasn’t stopped the momentum of this show and the people who support us. Onward and Upward! If you have yet to view the gallery in person, I highly recommend you do! 26 Mercer St New York, NY PLEASE SHARE IF YOU LIKE/SUPPORT MY ART! #jaemelo #newyorkartist #artistofinstagram #nycpainters #creativeart #portraitpainting #iconicportraits #afrolatino #dominican #afrolatinoartist #realism #modernart #nycportraitartist #paintingartist #jamesbaldwin #dreadlockstyle #kadirnelson #kehindewiley #blackart #gagosiangallery #thedeancollection #tallerjaemelo #moma #DorotheaLange #tulsa #blackwallstreet (at 26 Mercer St) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPnobAunRNC/?utm_medium=tumblr

BIO: Drawing on historical, political and personal narratives, my paintings are figurative compositions that conjure the complexity of the Afro-Latinx experience. The figures in my work inhabit a state of vulnerability that often encourages the viewer to question
their positions on class, race, and geography. I immigrated to the United States in 2002 from the Dominican Republic. Today, I feel
an overpowering responsibility (or calling) to the arts and towards my Black, Latinx, and immigrant communities.
