Afla Sackey & Afrik Bawantu - Destination

Wah Wah 45s are proud to present the debut LP on the label from Ghanaian vocalist and djembe drummer Afla Sackey. With his band Afrik Bawantu, he has fulfilled the dream of blending traditional Ghanaian music with sizzling Afrobeat grooves, topping it off with an irresistibly funky twist! Their unique blend of vibrant African rhythms with brisk, animated horn sections and heavy bass-lines bring a fresh perspective to the Afrobeat genre. Afrik Bawantu released their debut EP, Noko Hewon, back in 2013 to much critical acclaim, and went on to be nominated in the World Music Network’s charts. In 2014 they released their debut LP, Life On The Street, which showcased the original style of Afla’s compositions, as well as his group of gifted musicians. Afla himself was born in Ghana and started his creative life as a dancer with the country’s famous Bukom Ensemble, known for their infectious folk-driven rhythms. His elders soon soon recognised the musical potential of young Afla and encouraged him with careful guidance and training. This provided the foundations upon which Sackey has developed his career in music and dance. Upon moving to London, which was made possible by the Kakasitsi Master Drummers Of Ghana, Afla undertook a masters degree at Guildhall college, from which he graduated in 2012. With his wealth of experience in music and dance, Afla went on to become an inspiring educator, providing workshops and training to a diverse range of students from primary schools to universities. He has taught Afrobeat and Afro Jazz at the Royal Academy of Music where he still often appears as a guest lecturer, as well as acting as a workshop facilitator in places as far flung as Japan, Singapore and Argentina. Kroashent Character Spotlight: Afrik Ironbringer

For August/September, I'm taking on a little side project, cleaning up and finishing some of the placeholder characters on the Kroashent WorldAnvil. Oftentimes, inspiration strikes suddenly, leaving me with a lot of unfinished concepts that don't quite fit cleanly into the mix. I'll be returning to answering Q+As soon (questions are always open and welcome) and writing the next chapters of the book. In the meantime, working on a lot of commission work, so this is something of a side project when the tablet is charging.

Val's Notes: Afrik Ironbringer is one of those characters who appeared fairly well formed in my mind, part of a distant part of Alvez, the Fomorian stronghold of Tevenn Du. I've always wanted to keep the focus of Kroashent on the Breton inspired region of Letha, but oftentimes, the interconnectedness of both history and Celtic mythology, and the gaps present in the latter relating to the Continental Celts. Early on, I would often "plug" these gaps with things drawn from other regions, most commonly Britain and Ireland. Afrik is one of the results of these flights of fancy. I'm not sure how she'll work her way into the larger narrative, but she is a feature in the world itself, and tied to the pasts of both Gwae and Azelma.

The preservation of such studios and the continued practice of maintaining physical photo albums could offer unique insights into the evolution of families, culture, and identity over generations.”

Gabon's debts will be reduced by $450 million thanks to an innovative debt-for-nature mechanism. Piloted on Gabon's behalf by Bank of America (BofA), the debt-for-nature mechanism enables developing countries to reduce their external debt in return for funding for their biodiversity. In return, Gabon is protecting part of its marine ecosystem. This is the second case in Africa after the Seychelles.

...Gabon is paying for its biodiversity through the debt-for-nature mechanism. The operation, for which tenders were launched on the London Stock Exchange on 25 July 2023, will enable Gabon to reduce its external debt by up to 450 million dollars (267.1 billion CFA francs). In return, the country is committed to protecting its marine environment, with the support of the US-based non-governmental organisation (NGO) The Nature Conservancy.

Financially, the operation is being led by Bank of America (BofA), the second largest US bank in terms of deposits. A debt-for-nature swap is a debt relief technique for developing countries. It involves extending payment terms, reducing interest rates, granting new loans at low rates and writing off debts. This technique, invented by the American biologist Thomas Lovejoy, considered to be the godfather of biodiversity, involves exchanging part of the foreign debt for local investment in environmental protection measures.

The largest network of marine reserves in Africa

As part of Gabon’s debt-for-nature operation, the choice to protect marine biodiversity is not an insignificant one. Over the years, the Central African country has built up the largest network of rich and diverse marine reserves in Africa. Stretching over 53,000 km2, or 26% of the country’s territorial waters, this environment comprises 20 marine parks and aquatic reserves. It is home to countless threatened marine species, including the largest breeding populations of leatherback and olive ridley turtles, as well as 20 species of dolphins and whales.

Gabon thus becomes the second African country, after the Seychelles, to benefit from the debt-for-nature swap. It’s a swap that should spread throughout Africa... explains Hamouda Chekir, a member of Lazard’s Government Advisory team.

The French bank has just assisted Ecuador with a financial package that benefits both nature and the country’s economy. In concrete terms, Ecuador has swapped its current debt of $1.63 billion for a debt of $656 million, a transaction corresponding to 3% of the South American country’s total external debt, i.e. $48.129 billion in February 2023."

etimologija: verjetno iz Mavra - Mavrka (Mavri kot prebivalci severa Afrike). Če je to res, potem je mavrica: "pisana kot temna koža in barvite obleke Mavrov".

Frazem "pijan kot (božja) mavra" pa iz ljudske predstave, da mavrice pijejo vodo (Snoj za oboje).

Poimenovanje za Mavre iz latinskega Maurus (ugibam, da mogoče prek nemščine ali italijanščine)). V latinščino iz grščine, v grščino pa ... Tem več gledam, tem bolj me zmede. Več informacij spodaj.

Okej, zdaj smo samo še tisti, ki nas zanima. Finofajn!

1.) Wikipedija trdi, da je Strabon rekel, da so Mavri tako imenovali sami sebe. Ko gledam vir, ki ga citira Wikipedija, sicer tega ne najdem, se pa resda prav nič ne znajdem na Perseusovi strani, nikoli se nisem in se nikoli ne bom. (Wikipedija, Perseus) Slab vir, boste rekli - se strinjam! Ampak ga nekoliko podpre nadaljnje raziskovanje, zato ga sploh navajam ...

2.) Enciklopedija Novega sveta pravi, da beseda pride iz grškega poimenovanja za črno oz. temno barvo. Oni to besedo navajajo kot, citiram, "mauros". Zakaj jo tako citiram? No, ker niso vključili naglasa, jasno! Se pa bojim, da zna biti kar pomemben. Do te enciklopedije gojim globoko skepso, ker prvič slišim zanjo in ker sama o sebi pravi, da je osnovana na Wikipediji, samo da z "bolje recenziranimi članki". Ja, okej, ja, kdo jih pa recenzira, če smem vprašati? Kakšno ime in naziv bi prišel prav ...

3.) Grška beseda, za katero se moram zanašati na Wiktionary! Moji viri so brez graje! Torej: začnimo z novogrškim μαύρος (črn, temačen ...). Naglas na prvem zlogu - akut, ampak to je tako ali tako pričakovati, ker je le nova grščina in so naglasna znamenja poenostavljali, če se ne motim. Ne spoznam se, ampak mislim, da imajo samo še akute? Ne vem!

Kakorkoli že, nadaljujmo! Μαύρος naj bi prišel iz μαῦρος (koiné, torej, kaj, čas Aleksandra Velikega?) in ἀμαυρός (stara grščina). Ne pomaga, da je sploh stara grščina razdrobljena na milijardo dialektov!

Za ἀμαυρός (temen, slep, šibek ...) etimologija Wiktionaryju ni znana. Mogoče iz protoindoevropejskega *h₂mr̥-wós, lahko pa bi bil povezan z besedo μαυρός.

In kako je s slednjo? Tudi ta ima kup pomenov (temen, slep, šibek, negotov, neznan, nerazumljiv), ker grščina ne bi bila grščina brez pol strani definicij za vsako besedo. Etimologija je pa še vedno neznana! In, še huje, ena od možnih etimologij je kar (*globok vzdih*) - iz poimenovanja za Mavre. Da so oni sami sebe imenovali Mavri in so Grki besedo potem prevzeli ter ji nekako pridali milijardo pomenov.

Lahko bi bila pa iz protoindoveropejskega korena *mergʷ- in nekako sorodna npr. angleški besedi murky.
