JOMP Book Photo Challenge // Feb 27 // Freebie
African Samurai by Thomas Lockley & Geoffrey Girard
The true story of Yasuke, the first (and probably only) black samurai to serve a lord in feudal Japan, Oda Nobunaga. In case that sounds familiar, Netflix made a show VEEERY loosely based on him (at least the book didn't mention mechs and mages in the 16th century). Always a good handsell for me in my military town, and one I insist goes on every history table we make.

"Oh, that's okay! She's fine with a healthy amount of bamboo~" She took the large bag from Panda's back, opening it up to reveal multiple bamboo stalks. "Here you are, Panda! Just be sure to save some for later! I'm not sure where we can get more around here." With happy chuffs, Panda immediately grabbed a stalk and started munching. "There! I'm sure that will keep her occupied while we eat~"
"Wait...you never suggested a panda was going into my home. This is surreal." The samurai added." I have prepared you dinner, Ling. But not for this...large friend of yours."

What we are not gonna do is ignore how black nerds have single-handedly built the american anime scene with their bare hands. They had shows like Afro samurai and The Boondocks out before the rest of us even looked at anything besides Sailor Moon and DBZ and I think we owe then the biggest fucking thank you possible for their hard work.

dude I was looking through clips for a reference image and it literally makes me sick with anger that Genndy chose to portray Africa like That. Literally racist caricatures like come onnnn man. The worst part is that I really want to LIKE that episode aside from the art direction. His mentor is a very sweet guy and I like Jack’s little rivalry with the other kid. I dislike that Jack has to save everyone and the other tribe is portrayed even worse, but at least Jack isn’t fighting by his fucking self the whole scene. there was so much potential in this episode if Genndy hadn’t been so fucking racist with his character designs. I do not fucking understand why he chose to make them absolutely pitch black in color. That’s not what humans look like. It’s like how he colors Jack straight up yellow sometimes. I know during the time this came out it was not very likely for bigotry to get called out but that had to have made some people uncomfortable. Jeeeeesus Christ. The guy portrayed China more respectfully than he portrayed literally any other culture including Japan lmao. Actually I take that back he gave quite a few Chinese characters racist accents. The man wanted a ‘multiethnic’ feel to his show but could not fucking stop being white and racist for it
#samurai jack#I HAAAAATE ITTTT#I love the character of the African Chief I just can’t stand his fucking character design. you didn’t deserve that king#I say he didn’t portray Japan well bc he barely even did. it was like some hand wavey Vibe of Japan and nothing concrete#he at least bothered to portray Shaolin monks without just making them aggressively Chinese#Genndy straight up knew more abt China than he did Japan bc there are SO many times#where what Genndy thinks is a Japanese culture thing is more just him considering all East Asians the same#listen I love samurai jack but I think it got away with this a little too easily. I think Genndy should get some flak for that#that whole ‘great ancestors’ prayer is cool and all but Jack wouldn’t be praying to them like in fucking Mulan. that’s not his religion.#in Japanese culture you can and do pray to your ancestors but not like. in the middle of nowhere in battle?#it made for a cool moment to show Jack wasnt abandoned by his culture but it was. not even a little accurate LOL#I GGUESS the argument could be made Jack was just sending a little prayer up but it still felt. off#not even people in China prayed like that to nebulous ancestors in the sky LOL#it’s just kind of an orientalist thing. idk maybe Genndy pulled the idea from somewhere like most of his Jack scenes but#it’s not Japanese in nature LOL#I can see it coming from a Conan scene. a goood chunk of Jack was inspired by Conan#anyway. the most accurate fucking Japanese culture scene was when the Jack robot was praying to what he could scrounge up as a small shrine#and it WASNT EVEN REAL JACK.

There's a African proverb that goes:
"The child who is not embraced by his village will burn it down to feel its warmth."
Since all these people have been outcast by society they want to destroy society (the Meiji government) as revenge for treating them like crap.
If society/Meiji govt had took care of them and given them unconditional love and support maybe they wouldn't have turned out to be bad guys.

THE WORLD'S FIRST BLACK SAMURAI WARRIOR
Almost 500 years ago, a tall African man arrived in Japan. He would go on to become the first foreign-born man to achieve the status of a samurai warrior.
Kidnapped as a child, Yasuke had ended up a servant and bodyguard to the head of the Jesuits in Asia, with whom he traversed India and China learning multiple languages as he went.
His arrival in Kyoto, however, literally caused a riot. Most Japanese people had never seen an African man before, and many of them saw him as the embodiment of the black-skinned Buddha.
Among those who were drawn to his presence was Lord Nobunaga, head of the most powerful clan in Japan. When Yasuke was presented to Oda Nobunaga, the Japanese daimyō thought that his skin must have been coloured with black ink. Nobunaga had him strip from the waist up and made him scrub his skin.
"His height was 6 shaku 2 sun (roughly 6 feet, 2 inches (1.88m)... he was black, and his skin was like charcoal," a fellow samurai, Matsudaira Ietada, described him in his diary in 1579.
The average height of a Japanese man in 1900 was 157.9m (5 feet 2 inches) so Yasuke would have towered over most Japanese people in the 16th Century, when people were generally shorter due to worse nutrition.
Yasuke was not just different in height and appearance. He was also very muscular and well built. His strength can be compared to those of 10 men put together. He was indeed a born warrior, a hulk, and a samurai in waiting. One other feature that made Yasuke stand out was his level of intelligence. His mastery of the Japanese language in such a short time was a marvel to many. He was able to learn the culture and tradition of the people.
When Nobunaga realized that the African's skin was indeed black, he took an interest in him. Yasuke already spoke some Japanese and the two men got on well, according to academic Thomas Lockley, who has written a book on Yasuke. Nobunaga grew fond of Yasuke and treated him like family .

Hi lulu, so i was wondering if have you played Far cry new dawn in French, does roger talk in another idiom?
In spanish he stills talk in french
Hi! Yes, I played New Dawn in French and Roger has the same Québécois accent he has in English. It even seems he’s played by the same actor, Vincent Leclerc, whose name appears among the other French voice talents in the credits.
As for some of the (Canadian) French words he uses, such as “osti”, “tabarnak”, or “caulisse”, they’re typical slang/swear words from Québec that we don’t use in France, so they kept them in the French version and they sound as funny and exotic as they do in English.
It’s rare that Far Cry characters who speak with a non-American accent end up also having an accent in the French version of the game, but Roger thankfully kept his!
#it’s a good question because yeah sometimes they have to use another language#like in the film 'ghost dog: the way of the samurai' the character played by isaach de bankolé speaks french but no one understands him#they had to change that in the french version so he speaks an african language called yoruba instead#the actor is fluent in it because from what I’ve read it’s his parents’ native language#many french characters in disney movies have an italian accent in france#and the ‘'mi casa' is french for 'front door'’ joke in big hero 6 became ‘'mi casa' means 'door' in german’ in the french version#also I’ve recently realized they switched to english much earlier in the original intro scene of inglourious basterds#in the french version it’s only when landa is lighting his pipe that he suggests they continue the conversation in english#then in the film all english-speaking characters talk in french but french people also still speak french haha#far cry new dawn#roger cadoret#I watched a bit of spanish roger and while he does use canadian french words it didn’t sound like he had an accent to me#I may be wrong though#I also watched a bit of roger in the other languages and here’s what I found#german: french accent and words#italian: no french word or accent#japanese: no french accent and probably no words (I’m not sure)#russian: no accent (I think) but french words
