The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is reaffirming its calls for the federal government to recognize First Nations jurisdiction over policing.
Chiefs from across Canada are meeting in Montreal this week for the AFN's annual general assembly.
On Wednesday, the chiefs in attendance adopted a resolution calling for Public Safety Canada to introduce federal legislation that recognizes "First Nations inherent, treaty and constitutional rights" over policing. The resolution was adopted with one opposition and one abstention.
Ghislain Picard, regional chief for Quebec-Labrador who holds the AFN portfolio on justice and policing, said the resolution reaffirms previous positions by the chiefs.
"The resolution will serve as a reminder of the positions that we have to acknowledge, respect and deliver in the face of what I would call opposition from all levels of government," he told the assembly.

At First Note - Part 6
DAY FOUR: UNEXPECTED SHELTER
Maya isn't early to the practice room today. In fact, she's running late, caught in an unexpected December downpour without an umbrella. She dashes across campus, her textbooks clutched to her chest, already forming an apology in her mind for keeping Taejun waiting.
But when she rounds the corner to the music building, she stops short. There's Taejun, standing just inside the entrance, holding not only their usual drinks but also a navy blue umbrella. His face lights up when he sees her, and he hurries to meet her under his umbrella.
"I checked the weather app," he explains, holding the umbrella over her as she catches her breath. "My dad says it's better to have an umbrella and not need it…"
"Than need it and not have it," Maya finishes with him, laughing despite her damp state. "My mama says the same thing. I should've listened."
They're standing very close under the umbrella's shelter, and Maya becomes acutely aware of the water droplets sliding from her curls onto her sweater. Taejun notices too, immediately shrugging off his jacket.
"Here," he says, holding it out. "You'll catch cold."
"Such a gentleman," she teases, but accepts the jacket gratefully. It's warm from his body heat and smells like him - clean soap and something uniquely Taejun. "Won't you be cold?"
"I'm still warm from practice," he shrugs, but she notices the goosebumps on his arms.
"Well, then we better get inside quick," she says, linking her arm through his to keep them both under the umbrella. She pretends not to notice how he tenses briefly before relaxing into the contact, or how perfectly their steps match as they walk.
The practice room feels especially cozy today, rain drumming against the windows. Maya sits at the piano, still wearing his jacket, while Taejun sets up their drinks - hot chocolate today instead of tea.
"I thought we could use something warmer," he explains, then adds shyly, "I remembered you said it was your mama's cure for rainy days."
Maya's heart does that now-familiar flip. How does he remember every little detail she mentions?
"Actually," she says, fingers finding chord patterns on the piano, "my mama has a whole rainy day tradition. Hot chocolate and gospel songs. She says rain is God's percussion section."
Taejun's eyes light up. "Show me?"
Maya smiles and launches into "His Eye Is On The Sparrow," her fingers dancing across the keys as her voice fills the room. Maya loses herself in the familiar melody.
She's so caught up in the music that she almost misses Taejun's sharp intake of breath. When she glances over, the look on his face makes her voice nearly falter. He's watching her with such open wonder, such pure appreciation, that it makes her heart race.
As she reaches the chorus, Taejun joins in naturally, his voice wrapping around hers like a warm embrace. They've never sung gospel together before, but somehow he knows exactly where to add harmony, how to complement her runs without overshadowing them.
When the song ends, the rain seems to applaud against the windows.
"That was…" Taejun starts.
"Yeah," Maya agrees softly. They're sitting close again, thighs touching on the piano bench.
"Could you…" he hesitates. "Could you teach me more? Gospel songs, I mean. They're so different from what I usually sing, but when you do it, it's like…"
"Like what?" Maya prompts gently when he trails off.
"Like your whole soul is singing," he finishes quietly. "Not just your voice."
Maya turns to face him fully, suddenly very aware of how close they are, how his jacket still warms her shoulders. "That's exactly what it's supposed to be," she says. "Gospel isn't about perfection - it's about praise. About letting your whole self express joy."
"Like you did in Hongdae," he says, eyes intent on her face. "When you weren't thinking about technique or audience. You were just… free."
A drop of water falls from Maya's curls onto the piano bench between them. Without thinking, Taejun reaches up to brush another drop from her cheek. His hand lingers for just a moment too long, and Maya forgets how to breathe.
The practice room feels very small suddenly, the rain creating a private world just for them. Maya realizes she's leaning in slightly, and Taejun's eyes drop to her lips again, just like yesterday, but this time he doesn't look away and—
A crack of thunder makes them both jump. The moment breaks as they laugh nervously, but something between then has definitely shifted.
"Maybe," Maya says, her voice a bit unsteady, "we should work on your audition piece?"
"Right," Taejun agrees, but his eyes are still soft when they meet hers. "Though… could we do one more gospel song first?"
Maya smiles, turning back to the piano. "Any requests?"
"Whatever you want to teach me," he says simply. "I want to learn it all."
And as Maya begins to play "Amazing Grace," Taejun realizes he's no longer counting the days until she leaves. Instead, he's counting all the songs he wants to share with her, all the harmonies they haven't discovered yet.
The rain continues its percussion outside, but in their practice room sanctuary, two voices blend in perfect harmony, creating their own kind of amazing grace.
---
ooc: this is far from the last part of this series, however I'm going to end it here. But if you want to read the rest, like this post and I'll consider posting the other 5 or 6 parts in the future. It was fun re reading this as much as I remember writing it. As always, if you want to plot with Taejun, my dm's are always open. 😎

News from British Columbia, 4 July
Property owners in Nanaimo and throughout the province must pay their 2023 property taxes by July 4 to avoid fines.
2. The BC Maritime Employers Association believes that further negotiations will not lead to a collective agreement in the ongoing strike at British Columbia ports.
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada went on strike on July 1, representing workers involved in cargo loading and unloading at over 30 B.C. ports.
The employers association claims to have reached the limit of their concessions on core issues in the bargaining process.
3. The transfer of notorious Canadian killer Paul Bernardo to a medium-security prison without the knowledge of the Minister of Public Safety has raised concerns and sparked a review of the decision-making process.
The emails released reveal that the Commissioner of the Correctional Service of Canada, Anne Kelly, informed senior officials about the transfer, including the Prime Minister's Office, prior to notifying the Minister of Public Safety.
The Minister of Public Safety, Marco Mendicino, admits that his office made a mistake in not informing him of the transfer but denies any intentional attempt to keep him uninformed, and plans to issue a directive to ensure direct notification of such transfers in the future.
4. The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) has voted to remove RoseAnne Archibald from her position as national chief, citing a human resources investigation and allegations of corruption as contributing factors.
Archibald claims that her suspension and subsequent removal are a result of her efforts to fight corruption within the AFN.
The AFN will remain without a national chief until an interim leader is selected, with an election scheduled for December.
5. Two rescues were performed in 2 days in windy waters off south Vancouver Island
6. Three Nanaimo men helped an RCMP officer free a man who wasn't wearing pants
7. Lucy Koenig, a 99-year-old great-grandmother, celebrating her upcoming birthday by skydiving tandem with her great-grandson.

tagged by @phdmama to list seven comfort movies! a lot of my comfort movies are what i like to call competency porn. which is basically movies about professionals doing their jobs well, so! here's the list
APOLLO 13—is there anything better than the scene when one of the guys in houston walks into the room and is like "we gotta figure out how to make this fit into this using nothing but that"
SPOTLIGHT—peak competency porn, honest, hard working journalists using their skills to report on the story of sexual abuse in the catholic church and it actually making an impact. wild! i have rewatched this FAR too many times for it to be healthy probably lol
AIR FORCE ONE—ok this one is silly, but really is there anything better than watching hot president harrison ford beat up a bunch of terrorists on a plane and then face off against gary oldman using a russian accent? bc honestly, i can't think of any
A FEW GOOD MEN—i just love a good courtroom drama where people shout their confessions on the stand in front of everyone. also this has tom cruise at his peak, so really?? who can complain.
SHATTERED GLASS—this is a random deep cut that i first watched early in the pandemic? but it's just. it's got everything i love. based on a true story, young hayden christensen playing a con artist journalist, and then just...an even, steady story as other journalists pick apart his lies and his life falls apart. like?? i love it. i've rewatched it A LOT.
MONA LISA SMILE—a movie that is objectively not as good as the one it's trying to ape (dead poets society) and YET it's the one i get in the mood to rewatch all the time. like this is white feminism at its peak but it is, truly, a guilty pleasure.
ALMOST FAMOUS—if you'll notice from this list, another thing i clearly like is recent period dramas and this is a great one to just get into the early 70s music scene and have some fun. also philip seymour hoffman is PHENOMENAL in this.
THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY—this is a bonus eighth film that i am adding to this list bc i only just watched it for the v first time in december and i've already rewatched it twice since. i can see it becoming a comfort move for me. in this case, the competency porn would be tom's competency at conning and murdering lol
tagging @crazyassmurdererwall, @tattooedsiren, @woodchoc-magnum, @valleydean, @machtaholic, @tripleaxeldiaz, @tawaifeddiediaz, @catdadeddie, @buttercupbuck, and anyone else who wants to do this
#tagged in#other movies that almost made the cut:#erin brockovich + good will hunting + my cousin vinny + everest + scream + pleasantville#these are also all mostly from the 90s#a lot of movies i first came across bc AFN (armed forces network) would play them on tv lol

AFN Anatomy Practice Dump
Pov: You're Phil and you just brought home some mystery meat
He looks a bit creepy in this but honestly thats in character at this point. He's a creepy little dude when he's hungry.
I don't like this one I just wanted to practice the way his legs bend. I wanted to test how they'd look and bend at different angles. Don't look at it too hard.
Half done sketches that I'm gonna complete later are below the cut!
I got bro in the beast hunch. Honestly this is probably what that rabbit saw seconds before getting mauled. I draw the tail after I finish the whole drawing usually so poor boy is tailless rn.
This ones suuuuper reference heavy and not my usual stuff. Very messy. Idk if I'll finish it since its a bit far from my usual style. I hate hands theyre so hard to make look right in a lineless style but fuck it we ball.
Its like half shading practice and half me seeing how realistic I'm willing to draw before I get bored of it.
#dory doodles#ask for nothing#technoblade#technofanart#technoblade fanart#i guess#dark sleepy bois inc#since its afn

uhhh some object ocs for an object show concept I’m making!!! yayayayayaaaa
so um. basically the thing is that all the contestants in this object show (which isn’t really a game show, more like the Hunger Games where they just have to survive +there are some challenges and other events sprinkled in there) are dead people who got randomly picked and transported there. the name of the show is AFN (which is an acronym for something I will NOT be revealing yet) and every time a contestant dies, they don’t come back and are replaced by a NEW contestant, so basically it’s just never-ending object show hell
aaaaaaaanyways this is the first (and main) team, GLASSBLOWERS! Mirrory (15 y/o) is the leader, P.C. (17 y/o) is the smartest and also the silliest, Specty (21 y/o) is the team’s “caretaker”/nerd, and Sandy is just. a San Diego surfer girl in the wrong place at the wrong time lol
and yeah that’s it
#object shows#osc#original object show#afn#afn mirrory#afn sandy#afn specty#afn p.c.#afn Cassandra Reyes#afn Masami Takahashi#afn LaTeisha Johnson#afn Sophie Williams#i don’t have the motivation to draw the other teams yet BUUUUUT I might draw the host/co-host :]#also I’ll still be posting about my Cookie Run OCs +other stuff!!! yeah

At First Note - Part 5
DAY THREE: MORE THAN MUSIC
It's become their routine now - Maya arrives early to warm up the practice room, Taejun appears with carefully chosen drinks and snacks, each pretending they haven't spent all day looking forward to this moment. But today when Taejun walks in, something's different. His usual bright energy is dimmed, his shoulders tense.
"Everything okay?" Maya asks as he sets down their drinks - ginger tea today, good for tired voices.
"Had my monthly video call with my dad this morning," he says, attempting a smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes. "He's… he's really counting on this audition going well."
Maya pats the piano bench beside her, and he sinks down gratefully. "Tell me about him?"
"He's…" Taejun fidgets with his cup. "He's amazing, actually. Four-star Admiral, respected by everyone, but still made it to every school performance he could. Even when I was just singing in the back row of the church choir." He pauses. "I just don't want to disappoint him."
Without thinking, Maya reaches over and squeezes his hand. "Hey. From what I've heard these past few days? That's not possible."
He looks down at their joined hands, something vulnerable crossing his face. "Would you… would you mind if we didn't practice right away? Could we just… talk for a bit?"
"Of course." She doesn't move her hand. "Tell me more about your family?"
So he does. He tells her everything. About his adoptive mother Jessica, how she found him in that orphanage in Busan when he was an infant, how her Korean mother moved to America to help raise him after Jessica passed when he was 5. About growing up on the base, about his African-American adoptive father and the Motown records that shaped his life, and his grandmother's Korean lullabies. He spills it all, like a secret he's been desperate to tell.
Maya listens, understanding more with each word about why music means so much to him. When he finally falls quiet, she shares too - about growing up in a house full of music, about choir practice, her dad's pancakes, about holiday parties that always turned into family concerts.
"Last Christmas," she says, smiling at the memory, "my cousin Marcus tried to rap 'Silent Night' during the family talent show. Grandma nearly had a heart attack."
Taejun laughs, the tension finally leaving his shoulders. "Did she stop him?"
"Nah, but my dad started playing 'Away in a Manger' really loud on the piano until Marcus got the hint."
They're sitting closer now, shoulders touching, hands still loosely linked. The practice room feels like its own little world, safe and warm against the December chill outside.
"Can I confess something?" Taejun asks softly. Maya nods, and he continues, "When I first heard you sing in Hongdae… it reminded me of my mom. Not her voice exactly, but… that feeling of someone singing purely for the joy of it. No pressure, no audience expectations. Just… devotion."
Maya feels her heart swell. "Taejun…"
"Sorry," he says quickly. "That was probably too—"
"No," she cuts him off gently. "That's… that's beautiful actually." She turns slightly to face him better. "Want to know what I thought when I first heard you sing?"
He nods, eyes intent on her face.
"I thought… here's someone who gets it but doesn't realize it yet. Someone who knows music isn't just about impressing people. Someone that really wants to express their heart."
Something shifts in the air between them. Taejun's gaze drops to her lips for just a moment before he catches himself, color rising in his cheeks.
Maya clears her throat softly, though she doesn't move away. "We should probably practice at some point today."
"Right," he agrees, but neither of them moves. "Maybe… maybe one more story first?"
She smiles, settling more comfortably against his shoulder. "Tell me about growing up in Chicago."
They end up practicing much later than usual, their voices a little rougher from all the talking. But when they finally sing together, something's different. Their harmony is deeper somehow, richer with understanding. Every note carries the weight of their shared stories, their growing trust.
As they pack up for the night, Taejun finds himself counting the days differently. Not eleven days until she leaves, but eleven more chances to create moments like this. Eleven more opportunities to explore whatever this is becoming.
"Same time tomorrow?" Taejun asks, like always, but tonight it sounds more like 'please stay.'
"Same time tomorrow," she confirms softly, and hopes he hears what she can't say yet: 'I might not want to leave.'
