also the content of the video doesn’t mention that barcelona only had a proximity with franco after their president was killed (for being a leftist and an enthusiast of the catalan independence) and he had trusted people appointed by a committee from madrid (city) to manage the club and prohibit any form of political dissidence, with other teams also suffering from the same politics. this was also the case in italy, germany and portugal.

they would only take part in competitions if the entire institution was under the control of fascists, and even their crest was altered so it wouldn’t show calatunya’s national colours but spain’s. small details that give a perspective of how these clubs became an instrument on franco’s hands.

madrid was co-opted but the amount of privilege that came from that allowed them to be the most successful team in europe for years, which is obviously still the case.

and i’d say that to this day, even though the discussion about franco wasn’t as common, both teams symbolize very political things. one is the superiority of a unified spain centred in madrid while the other is a powerhouse of separatism centred in barcelona

mmm got it! so, in short, the politicization of sports, specifically the clubs involved here, is pretty inherent - up to this day. the respective clubs still represent these political ideas/matters despite many people saying that sports should not be linked with politics. and i see why, in this case specifically, it is hard to seperate them and why we are unable to just completely ignore the history.

i was reading a couple of reports/news articles, and apparently some other clubs in la liga are also actually politically-driven/-affliated. similarly, other leagues, such as serie a and their lower divisions, for instance, also have clubs that are historically politically-driven. looks like there is so much more for me to learn on this topic - it's really vast!

this has been a very eye-opening learning experience for me, as i was unaware of such deep history of political influence in sports. so thank you, once again, anon! if you have any references/sources, do feel free to share them with me, i'd be happy to give them a read!
