AEW Full Gear 11/19/22
Jungle Boy Jack Perry vs. Luchasaurus (Steel Cage Match) -- This match begins with Perry getting absolutely beaten to a pulp, thrown back and forth into the cage walls by Luchasaurus, busted open and bloodied. Christian tries to get involved, tries to get into the cage, and the ref ejects him. At this point, Luchasaurus exits the cage door, and Perry follows. Luchasaurus grabs some chairs and a table. Back in the ring, Perry finally gets some offense in with a series of dropkicks, then drives Luchasaurus' head into the cage with his boot. Destroyer off the chair by Perry!!! Then Perry lands a Killswitch on another chair!!!!! Luchasaurus with a chokeslam to Perry on a chair!! Sliced Bread off the top rope by Perry!!!! Elbows by Perry!! Headbutt by Luchasaurus! Luchasaurus with a series of right hands. He tells Perry to stay down, but Perry gets back up each time and finally responds with a slap to the face!! Perry lands a piledriver on Luchasaurus!!! Kick out!! Tombstone by Luchasaurus! Luchasaurus then drops Perry on his face!! Kick out!! Luchasaurus picks up Perry, but he reverses into a sleeper and kicks Luchasaurus on the table!! Elbows drop off the top of the cage through the table by Perry!! Perry locks in the Snare Trap and Luchasaurus taps!!! Wow. I really wasn't into this feud at all up to this point, but this was a very good match. Making this a cage match was a great decision. Perry looked great here.
Death Triangle (c) vs. The Elite for the AEW World Trios Championship -- The champs entering first is annoying to me. I get it, but it's a bit disrespectful and annoying. But I say that, and then I almost have tears in my eyes when I see Kenny. Someone tell me to shut up. The Elite get a massive pop upon their entrance. They enter to Carry On My Wayward Son. Chillworthy moment here, not gonna lie.
Aggressive lock up between Pac and Omega, and I am already going nuts!!!!!! Kenny goes for his leg drop on Pac, but Pac kips right back up onto his feet!!!! Rapid fire athletic offense from Nick and Fénix!!!!!!! Each dodging and reversing each other's moves in rapid succession!!!! Double kicks in the corner from the Bucks to Penta. Rana by Omega on Penta!! Nick dives over Matt's legs and over the ropes onto Fénix on the outside!!! Two beautiful Northern Lights suplexes from Matt to Fénix, followed by double Northern Lights to both Fénix and Penta! Diving stomp off the top rope from Penta to Matt!!! Matt kicks out!! Kenny and Pac are back in. Stiff back kick from Pac to Kenny!!!! Snap dragon suplex from Kenny to Penta, then another to Pac!! Kenny with the terminator dive to Penta and Pac on the outside! Matt dives over the ropes and lands a HUGE DDT on Fénix on the apron!!!!!! HOLY SHIT!! Hurricanrana from Nick to Penta off the top rope to the outside onto all the others!!!!!!!! Fisherman buster from Kenny to Pac! Omega runs for a V-trigger, but Pac dodges and reverses with a HUGE, explosive release German suplex!!! Stereo Tombstones from Death Triangle to The Elite!! Fénix and Penta on the top rope. Fénix dives off Penta's shoulders and onto Kenny!! Destroyer by Penta on Nick!!! Cutter by Fénix on Matt!!!! Black Arrow by Pac on Kenny, then a quick transition into the Brutalizer!!! Nick breaks up the hold!! Lucha Bros take out the Bucks with dives to the outside!! Big springboard kick from Fénix to Kenny's face!!!! Stomp to the abdomen of Kenny by Fénix!!! Pac throws Fénix the hammer!! Fénix throws it away, but the distraction gives Kenny time to land a V-trigger and double underhook driver!!! Fénix kicks out! Three slingblades by Penta, one on each member of The Elite!! Triple superkick from The Elite to Penta!! Powerbomb from Kenny to Fénix!!! BTE trigger from The Elite to Fénix!!! Pac breaks up pin!!! Pac pulls the hammer from his trunks and tries to use it on Kenny!! Nick stops it with a superkick to Pac!!! V-trigger from Kenny to Fénix!!!!! Pac hands the hammer to Fénix from outside the ring! Kenny goes for the One-Winged Angel, but Fénix, while on Kenny's shoulders, lays in the hammer to Kenny's head and rolls Kenny up for the three count!! Hell yeah!!!!! THIS MATCH SLAPPED SO HARD!!!!! AND DEATH TRIANGLE RETAINED!!!! I COULD NOT ASK FOR MORE!!!!!!! THERE ARE NO OTHER TRIOS TEAMS LIKE THESE TWO!! EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE GUYS BROUGHT IT! NOT A DEAD SECOND IN THE WHOLE MATCH!! INCREDIBLE!!
Jade Cargill (c) vs. Nyla Rose for the TBS Championship -- They trade power moves. Jade wins with a pump kick and Jaded. This wasn't great.
Chris Jericho (c) vs. Claudio Castagnoli vs. Bryan Danielson vs. Sammy Guevara for the ROH World Championship -- Danielson and Castagnoli ping-pong Jericho back and forth with uppercuts. Stereo corner uppercuts and dropkicks from Danielson and Castagnoli to Guevara and Jericho! Danielson and Castagnoli are left alone in the ring. They shake hands, but don't let go. They stare each other down for a minute, then go at each other, trading strikes and roll ups!! Jericho breaks it up. Double team flap jack and Boston Crab from Danielson and Castagnoli to Jericho! Double team offense by Jericho and Guevara on Danielson. Jericho hits a DVD and covers Danielson, telling Guevara to stand aside. Danielson kicks out. Danielson with elbows and nasty round kicks on both Jericho and Geuvara!! He puts them both down!! Rana off the top from Danielson to Guevara!! Guevara lands on his feet! Standing Spanish Fly from Guevara to Danielson!! Lionsault from Jericho to both Danielson and Guevara as Guevara tries to pin Danielson!! Gut wrench and nasty stomp from Claudio to Jericho!! Codebreaker from Jericho to Claudio!! Jericho covers, but Guevara pulls him off!! Jericho and Guavara lay into each other with strikes!! Codebreaker from Guevara to Jericho!! Jericho kicks out! Guevara goes for the Walls, but Jericho reverses and locks in the Walls of his own!! Danielson tries to break it up, but Jericho grabs the Walls on Danielson instead! Big vertical suplex from Claudio to Jericho, then Claudio locks in the Sharpshooter! Danielson locks in the LeBell lock on Jericho while he is still in Claudio's Sharpshooter! Guevara breaks it up! Guevara holds out his hand to Jericho and hugs Jericho, but he is just using this to get Jericho up for the GTH!! GTH lands, then a Shooting Star from the top!! Jericho kicks out! Guevara with hammer and anvil elbows on Danielson. This just pisses Danielson off, and he lays in a vicious palm strike to the face!! He throws Guevara to Claudio, who throws Guevara out of the ring. Danielson catches Claudio as he turns around with a psycho knee!!!!! Claudio kicks out! Hammer and anvil elbows from Danielson to Claudio!! Claudio catches Danielson's arm and reverses to deliver elbows of his own! Danielson reverses for more elbows! Claudio with a massive pop-up uppercut attempt, but Danielson reverses into a backslide! Claudio kicks out!! Big lariat by Claudio! Danielson kicks out! Danielson and Claudio on the top rope. Guevara runs up! Cutter off the top to Claudio, Spanish Fly off the top to Danielson by Guevara!! Danielson grabs the LeBell lock!! Jericho breaks it up! Big running uppercuts from Claudio to Jericho on the outside! Danielson with an attempt at a running knee to Claudio off the apron, but Claudio catches him and lands a Neutralizer on the floor!!Shooting Star to outside by Guevara on Claudio! Huge pop-up uppercut from Claudio to Guevara!! Kick out!! Guevara rolls up Claudio with his feet on the ropes! Claudio kicks out! Giant Swing from Claudio to Guevara! Jericho jumps over Guevara while he is in the Giant Swing to land a Judas Effect on Claudio!! Another Judas Effect!! 1, 2, 3!! Jericho retains!! Damn. This was a really great match. Excellent stuff from all four guys. I liked the finish a lot too. If Jericho had to retain, that was the way to do it.
Saraya vs. Britt Baker -- The story of this match is Britt targeting Saraya's neck. Saraya's legs are on the apron, and Britt lands a twisting neck breaker to the floor! Britt lands another neck breaker with Saraya's legs draped on the second rope. Britt with another neck breaker, and then Britt tries to just strangle Saraya, hands around her throat. Diving cross body off the apron to Britt on the outside by Saraya. They trade strikes in the ring. Saraya lands some clotheslines. Britt drops Saraya on her head with an Air Raid Crash. Britt with elbows to the neck and a stomp to the back of the neck/head. Powerbomb off the second rope by Saraya looks absolutely terrible. Saraya lands Rampaige (???). Lockjaw attempt by Britt, but Saraya reverses into a pin attempt. Britt kicks out. Rolling elbow, fisherman neck breaker, and stomp from Britt to Saraya. Saraya kicks out. Saraya lands two Rampaiges for the pinfall. Ugh. I wanted this to be good, but it really wasn't. Very sloppy looking match. I know this was Saraya's first match in five years, so hopefully she will improve as the ring rust wears off. Britt is what she is.
Wardlow (c) vs. Powerhouse Hobbs vs. Samoa Joe for the TNT Championship -- This is a solid match. Loved the finish. Wardlow is in the middle of a powerbomb symphony on Hobbs when Joe sneaks into the ring from behind, cracks Wardlow over the head with the belt, and locks in the Coquina Clutch on Hobbs. Hobbs goes out!! SAMOA JOE IS THE NEW TNT CHAMPION!! DOUBLE CHAMP JOE!! HELL YEAH!! This is great for the TNT title, as someone like Joe can actually make that title meaningful.
Backstage, Orange Cassidy announces that his friend and former ROH Television Champion Tomohiro Ishii wants to challenge Jericho for the ROH World Championship on Dynamite!!!!!!!! Hype!!!! Cassidy holds up the All Atlantic Championship and asks Jake Hager: "This? You like it? Well, why don't you come and try to take it? Next week? Cool?" Loool, loving nonchalant fighting champ Orange Cassidy.
Darby Allin and Sting vs. Jay Lethal and Jeff Jarrett -- Lethal and Jarrett come out to the ring with a bunch of goons in Sting masks. Darby rushes Lethal before the bell and nails Lethal and all his fake Stings with a skateboard. In the ring, Sting pushes Lethal off the top rope, and he lands hard on his back on the apron!! Darby suplexes Jarrett on the floor!! Darby sets up a ladder on the ramp and goes for a Coffin Drop on Jarrett, but Singh catches him and plants him on the ramp. Schiavone: "He bounced!!!" Sting with a diving cross body off the balcony/barricade onto Singh and Lethal in the crowd! Back in the ring. Sting takes a chokeslam from Singh! Some good back and forth action between Darby and Lethal. Darby goes for a Coffin Drop from the top on Lethal, but Jarrett intercepts with a hard shot to Darby's back with the guitar!! Double team Scorpion Death Drop/Coffin Drop combination from Sting and Darby to Singh!!! Lethal goes for Lethal Injection, but Sting catches him in a hold!! Darby comes off the top again, landing a Coffin Drop on Lethal while he is still in Sting's hold!! This is enough to give Darby the pinfall on Lethal!! This was better than it could have been. Jarrett didn't really do anything, so that helped.
Toni Storm (c) vs. Jamie Hayter for the AEW Women's World Championship -- The match starts with a lock up and a bit of a technical feeling out process. A hip attack by Storm drives Hayter outside!! Hayter throws Storm into the barricade!! Storm drives Hayter head first into the ring post!! Back in the ring, Hayter executes two nice snap suplexes. Storm kicks out both times. Hayter stands on Storm's head in the corner! Brutal chops from Hayter to Storm in the corner!! Vicious shoulder tackle by Hayter!! Hayter covers Storm with a knee only!!! Storm kicks out. Hayter with viscous shots to Storm's back!! Big tackle and a barrage of strikes by Storm!! Hip attack in the corner and diving cross body from the top by Storm!! Swinging DDT off the ropes by Storm! Hayter kicks out! Their hands are locked, and they trade elbows strikes with their free hands! Big headbutt from Storm puts Hayter down!!! Storm goes down too! Both get up and trade elbows again!! Boots from Hayter to Storm!! Big back elbow from Hayter!!!! Rebel hits Storm with the belt! Nasty neck breaker on the knee, followed by a sliding lariat by Hayter!!! Storm kicks out!! The ref kicks Rebel out of ringside! Lariat from Storm!! Hayter kicks out! Storm is sent to the outside. Baker out of nowhere with a stomp to Storm's head on the title belt! Storm Zero by Hayter!! Storm kicks out again!! German suplex and Storm Zero by Storm! Hayter kicks out!!! Britt is on the apron, and Storm knocks her off. Big back breaker on the knee by Hayter!!! Storm kicks out! Britt removes the turnbuckle pad. Hayter drives Storm into the exposed buckle!! Huge ripcord lariat by Hayter puts Storm down for the count!! 1, 2, 3!! New champ!!! Nice!!!!!! This match was very good. One of the best women's matches I've seen in AEW. Hayter just seems to get better and better. Excited to see where she takes this division and that title.
The Acclaimed (c) vs. Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland for the AEW World Tag Team Championship -- Caster says Swerve looks like Randall from Monster's Inc in his pre-match rap. Loool. Pretty arm drags from Caster. Swerve and Lee isolate Bowens and target his injured arm. After taking a long beating, Bowens finally hits a reverse rana on Lee!! Caster hot tag! Huge back body drop from Caster to Swerve! Leg drop from the top from Caster to Lee. Bowens back in. Double team cutter to Swerve. Diving cross body from the top from Caster to Lee, who is driven through a barricade that Swerve propped up on the apron earlier in the match, and onto the floor. Swerve with four big, nasty kicks to Bowens' head. Bowens kicks out! Fall from Glory on Caster, but he kicks out! Lee powerbombs Caster onto Bowens! Swerve tries to use the pliers on Caster's fingers, but Billy Gunn runs out to stop it. Swerve tries to get Lee to use the pliers on Bowens. Lee refuses, and Swerve slaps Lee in the face. Lee then helps Bowens up and leaves Swerve high and dry. Bowens rolls Swerve up, but he kicks out. Combination of strikes from Bowens! Bowens makes a tag to Caster. Swerve rolls Bowens up, but he is no longer legal! Caster jumps in! Finisher from the Acclaimed gets the pinfall on Swerve! This was a fine match. Nothing to get super excited about though. They've had better showings against each other.
Jon Moxley (c) vs. MJF for the AEW World Championship -- MJF enters to a big pop!!! I am so hyped!!!!!!!!!! New champ chant after Justin Roberts introduces MJF!!! MJF chants!!!
Mox with a huge punch to MJF right at the bell!! MJF laughs and slaps Mox in the face! This sets Mox off, and he lays in some hard strikes!! They run the ropes, and Mox drops down. MJF walks over him with a Flair strut. MJF slaps his ass at Mox. Mox runs at MJF, and MJF sends him over the ropes to the outside. MJF teases a dive, but just bounces repeatedly off the ropes instead. Mox drives MJF into the corner and bites his head!! MJF with a drop toe hold, sending Mox into the bottom turnbuckle face-first, then stomps to Mox in the corner!! Big lariat by Mox! Mox locks in an STF!! MJF bites Mox's hands to break the hold! Chops and elbows by MJF! Falcon Arrow into an armbar by Mox! MJF gets to the ropes to break. Big lariat in the corner by Mox drops MJF! Another lariat by Mox in the corner, and MJF rolls to the outside. Mox follows him outside. Mox grabs the title and struts around outside. MJF catches him off guard and spits something in his eyes!!! Mox throws MJF into the ring steps! Back in the ring. Elbows in the corner by Mox! Mox slings MJF into the other corner. MJF bounces off the ropes with a big clothesline!! Atomic drop by MJF, MJF ducks a strike from Mox, back rake by MJF!!!!! MJF then stomps on Mox's foot and lays in right hand jabs to the face! MJF bounces Mox's head repeatedly on the top turnbuckle!! Paradigm Shift attempt by Mox, but MJF reverses, whipping Mox into the corner!! Beautiful!!! MJF covers, but Mox kicks out! MJF puts the timekeeper's table beside the ring. Mox with a cutter out of nowhere when MJF comes back in the ring!!! Mox grabs MJF's hands while he is down and lays in stomps to the head! This crowd is booing Mox!!!! Music to my ears!!!! MJF lands a tombstone on the apron!!!!!!! My god!! MJF bangs his knee on the apron in the process. MJF gets back into the ring and covers Mox, but Mox kicks out at two!! Back out to the apron, and Mox lands a piledriver on MJF through the table to the floor!!!!! MJF barely slides back into the ring at 9.9!! Mox hits a Paradigm Shift! MJF kicks out!! Mox immediately grabs the injured knee and lays in kicks to it, then locks in the Figure Four! MJF manages to turn and reverse the hold! Mox grabs the ropes to break. Heat seeker by MJF on Mox!! Mox kicks out! Chopblock by Mox to MJF's knee takes MJF down! Mox props up MJF's leg on the bottom rope and repeatedly stomps the knee!! Fuck you Moxley chants!!!! Mox goes to the top, but MJF grabs the top rope and Moxley gets crotched on the top turnbuckle. MJF goes to the top and attempts some offense, but Mox reverses with hammer and anvil elbows! Avalanche Paradigm Shift!! Oh my god!!! Moxley covers, and MJF barely gets his fingers on the bottom rope to stop the count!! MJF struggles to his feet. Mox yells at MJF to "give me your best shot, hit me motherfucker!!!" MJF spits in his face!!!!!!! Moxley slaps MJF in the face!! They trade elbows/forearms before Mox goes back to the injured knee with kicks! Mox bounces off the ropes, going for a lariat, but MJF pulls the ref between them!!!! MJF pulls out the Dynamite Diamond Ring and considers using it. Regal comes down the ramp and tells MJF not to even think about it and to put it down. MJF throws the ring down and flips off Regal!!! While MJF is distracted, Mox comes from behind with a choke!! MJF runs up the ropes in the corner and flips over into a pinning predicament on Mox to escape the hold!! Mox kicks out at two!! A second ref is sent out. Mox locks the choke back in, but MJF backs Mox into the second ref, taking him out! Mox locks in the bulldog choke this time!! MJF taps, but both refs are down! Regal tells Mox to get the ref up. While Mox is turned away, dealing with the ref, Regal slips his brass knuckles to MJF!!!!!! Holy shit!!!!! This crowd pops!!!! MJF nails Moxley with the brass knuckes! Another big pop!!!!! MJF covers Moxley! 1, 2, 3!!!!!!
I AM LOSING MY DAMN MIND RIGHT NOW!!!! SO IS THIS CROWD!!!!!! FINALLY!!!!!!!!!! FINALLY THE ERA OF MJF!!!!!!!!! I AM SO EXCITED, I AM GONNA THROW UP!!!!!! ALSO, THIS MATCH ROCKED!!!!! Wherever I go... whatever country I go to... I want the Golden Lovers to fight with the same emotion and one heart. —Kenny Omega
“What would Kota think?”
2019-2021
This is a long-overdue gifset. I meant to finish it in November 2021, then I meant to finish it in early 2022, then, well, May 2022 happened, and the Golden Lovers story effectively got put on ice, so I shelved the gifset, too. But now we have reason to hope again, so here it is. The Golden Lovers’ path has never been a straightforward or easy one.
I’ve seen Kota Ibushi described as a “ghost” that haunted Kenny Omega for those few years, but I don’t think that’s quite accurate. Kota has been part of the fabric of AEW itself since the very beginning. Despite the fact that he has yet to make an actual appearance, he has been present in direct references and allusions, in the Golden Lovers symbol on the shoulder of Kenny’s gear, and in the golden “E” in “AEW”, which originally came from the Golden Elite.
Without Kota Ibushi, AEW as we know it would not exist. Of course, a large part of that is his continuing influence on anything and everything that Kenny does. Kenny Omega only really tells one story. It’s the same story that he has been telling his whole career. Sometimes it’s a quiet, subtle story, and sometimes it’s a very loud one. Sometimes it’s both at the same time.
The first direct, unmistakable reference to Kota in AEW happened in an infamous Undertale-themed VTR on October 30, 2019. In it, Kenny is plagued by his own insecurity (which was not helped by Kota’s recent G1 win, in contrast to Kenny’s recent failures in AEW), and a seductive voice tries to prompt him to let it take control before his other tag partners leave him, too. But Sans steps in to stave off the inevitable, and Kenny manages to keep it together—for about a year or so.
The next reference happens a little over a week later, at Full Gear on November 9. Kenny has an unsanctioned match with Jon Moxley, and he brings out all sorts of weapons, including a horrific bed of barbed wire that Hangman Page and the Young Bucks were reluctant to help him with. But what gets him in the end isn’t any weapon, but a failed Phoenix Splash (Kota’s first finisher) onto the exposed wood of the ring. From there, Mox hits a Paradigm Shift and pins him. Kenny could endure broken glass and barbed wire, but the one pain he couldn’t withstand is the pain of a broken heart.
After that, he tries to retreat back into the only comfort he knows: tag team wrestling. He pressures Hangman into tagging with him, and the two of them set their sights on tag team gold. Miraculously, they manage to make it work, winning the titles a scant month and a half or so before the world shuts down. Kenny’s main focus is on tag team wrestling during this time, but in order to fix one major blemish on his singles record, he ends up wrestling Pac in an ironman match on February 26, 2020. One of the moves he pulls out is unmistakably a Kamigoye (Kota’s current finisher).
A few days after that, on February 29, Kenny and Hangman defend their titles against the Young Bucks at Revolution. It’s a match with quite a few references and callbacks (especially to the Golden Lovers vs Young Bucks match in 2018), but the most striking moment was the Bucks hitting Kenny with a Golden Trigger (the Golden Lovers’ finisher), which Kenny kicks out of after a mere 1-count, prompting a massive response from the crowd. No one can weaponize the Golden Lovers’ own love against him like that.
The end of that match portends division and betrayal between the four men, but before the story can continue as planned, the covid-19 pandemic hits, and everything in the world of pro wrestling changes.
The year that follows is a hard one. Kenny’s AEW tag title run has a cruel symmetry with Kota’s concurrent NJPW tag title run. Just as Kenny and Hangman finally find their equilibrium, FTR arrives to sow conflict, The Elite fractures, Kenny and Hangman drop the titles, and Kenny gives up on tag team wrestling. Everything in the Undertale VTR had come to pass. Having nowhere else to go, he goes to an old family friend: Don Callis.
Then, at Winter Is Coming on December 2, wrestling in frigid 40°F weather at the open-air Daily’s Place, Kenny beats Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship, thanks to Don Callis helping him cheat. The two of them abscond with the title after the so-called “golden screwjob”, and Kenny takes it somewhere the Young Bucks aren’t willing to follow him—Impact Wrestling.
Thus kicks off the Belt Collector arc. Kenny soon acquires two new/old goons: Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows, both former members of Bullet Club. He starts considering himself part of Bullet Club again, and declares his intent to collect more belts besides the AEW one (and the AAA Mega Championship, which he already had), starting with Impact.
On January 4, 2021, Kota Ibushi wins the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Championships at Wrestle Kingdom in NJPW. A few days after that, Kenny posts an Instagram story wherein he looks at Sports Illustrated’s list of the top 10 wrestlers of 2020. Kenny is number five on the list, and Kota is number eight. We can see that Kenny was looking at Kota’s entry before he looked at his own.
Then, on January 28, on the three year anniversary of their reunion, Kota tweets at Kenny, proposing that their two companies change the industry together. Kenny replies, using Nak’s translation as a mediator, and says, “Already feeling lonely in the Kingdom I left for you? Shall I destroy it? Take my hand, we’ll build a new one”. Kota responds to him, but receives no answer.
A few days after that, on February 3, Kenta appears on AEW Dynamite, blowing the so-called Forbidden Door between AEW and NJPW wide open. From that point on, we’re truly in uncharted territory.
Kenny challenges for (and wins) the Impact World Championship in April, but leading up to that match, Don simultaneously stokes Kenny’s ego and tries to gaslight him into erasing Kota from his own history. He encourages Kenny to repeatedly say that no one has ever kicked out of the One Winged Angel (only one person actually has: Kota Ibushi. He’s the source of Kenny’s greatest strength and his greatest weakness). However, no matter how much Don tries, Kenny’s age-old insecurity emerges on March 23, when Don names a long list of wrestlers that Kenny is supposedly better than, and Kenny yells out “Bigger than Ibushi!”
Kenny names Kota again in a AAA promo on August 31, listing him among the best high flyers in the world. It’s abundantly clear that to Kenny Omega, Kota Ibushi is the greatest wrestler in the world. No matter how far Kenny goes, no matter how many belts he collects, no matter how many accolades he receives, Kota Ibushi will always stand above him in his own mind. Kenny will never be able to outrun him or let go of him. He can’t fill the hole in his heart with a new tag partner, and he can’t fill it with belts, either.
While all of this is happening, Kota is unfortunately not having the greatest summer of his life. He loses the IWGP belt to Will Ospreay on April 4, then gets aspiration pneumonia in July. He participates in the G1 Climax tournament in September and manages to make it all the way to the finals, but he dislocates his shoulder after a failed Phoenix Splash while facing Kazuchika Okada on October 21.
Kenny’s own injuries come back to haunt him, too, but his autumn goes a little bit better.
Adam Cole—an actual ghost from Kenny’s past—comes back to sow trouble for the Elite (though it takes a while to actually manifest), debuting at All Out on September 5 along with Bryan Danielson. Bryan wrestles Kenny a couple weeks later in his first match as an AEW member, on September 22 at Grand Slam. He forces Kenny to fight him with everything he has, and for just a moment, Bryan is able to draw out the Best Bout Machine instead of the Belt Collector. As he always does in his moments of greatest need, Kenny reaches for Kota Ibushi, and once again executes a Phoenix Splash, which, as always, he is unable to actually hit. This time, it doesn’t end in tragedy, though. Instead, the match goes to a full time limit draw.
The death knell for the Belt Collector looms near, however. Hangman Page earns himself a shot at the AEW World Championship at Full Gear on November 13. Three days before the match, they hold a contract signing for it on Dynamite.
Hangman, who knows Kenny very well by this point, is able to read the subtext. He finally figures it out. He realizes that everything Kenny said to him, everything that he did to him and with him, it was never actually about Hangman. It all sprung from a deeper wound that Kenny has carried with him all this time. As soon as Hangman figures this out, nothing Kenny does to him can hurt him anymore. "But if I remember, you once had another tag team partner who maybe you felt like you didn't measure up to either."
That one line also does something else that’s very important: it brings Kota Ibushi out of AEW’s subtext and into the main text. He’s part of the story now. And he always was. (The man himself liked a gif of Hangman’s “you once had another tag partner” line on twitter shortly after it happened. If there was ever any doubt that he’d been keeping up with what Kenny was doing in his absence, it’s gone now.)
Maybe the best illustration of this is a front row sign that a fan brings to Hangman and Kenny’s match at Full Gear a few days later. “What would Kota think?” Kenny stops to stare at it for a long moment before entering the ring. Years earlier, he’d talked about being so surprised and thrilled that the fans had managed to pick up on the Golden Lovers story leading up to their reunion in NJPW. He was so touched by the fact that the fans had known their history, after all that time. I wonder if he felt something similar here. It was in many ways the culmination of his efforts. The story made deeply tangible, here at the climax of its most difficult chapter.
As was always meant to happen, Kenny loses to Hangman and drops the AEW title. He makes one last onscreen appearance on November 17, 2021 before temporarily stepping away from AEW and away from wrestling so that he can recuperate from years of overworking himself. He says, “I feel like... there’s things I gotta fix, there’s things I gotta change, and I can’t do it here.” Is his relationship with Kota one of those things he had to fix?
Here’s where the story gets a bit hazy. Unfortunately, the year that follows does not go particularly well for either of the Golden Lovers, and plans have to get rewritten. Their respective injuries take longer than expected to heal, which leads to Kota having a falling out with NJPW in May 2022 after they try to force him to come back to the ring too soon. Kenny is finally able to make his own return in August 2022, but he returns to a troubled backstage environment, which finally boils over during the media scrum after All Out on September 4. Kenny and the rest of the Elite are forced to vacate their freshly won Trios Championships, and they all get suspended for a few months during the investigation.
But even in the darkest of moments, things aren’t all bad. The Golden Lovers reunite in a restaurant in Japan on September 15. They reunite on their own terms, outside of any company. The future is still a bit unclear for them, but wherever the story goes next, they want to do it right. “Because the tag team with him is more special to me than anything,” Kota says. He asks Kenny to wait for him, and Kenny assures him that he’ll wait as long as it takes. They both proclaim that the Golden Lovers aren’t over.
One day, the stars will align for them again. If it happens in AEW, the stage is already set. "What would Kota think?” was the question posed at the end of 2021. Maybe one day we will get to hear his answer.

The So Called Rub of Jericho
Tumblr media
I wasn’t always a full time AEW viewer, in fact I began watching regularly in the summer of 2022. What attracted me was Eddie Kingston.
Tumblr media
Eddie had the physique of a plumber, the gear of an indie guy who forgot his main attire at home so he scrapped together what he could find, and the speech of an angry New Yorker who spent the days yelling at kids on his stoop. That is what makes him so appealing. At the time, Kingston was feuding with Chris Jericho and his faction The Jericho Appreciation society. This faction had some of the guys from the previous Jericho stable, The Inner Circle, with some new additions in 2.0 and Daniel Garcia. The gimmick: Sports Entertainers who hated wrestling. If it sounds like an obnoxious WWE parody, then you’re right it was. You got the joke immediately and did not have room for expansion, they were guys who dressed in goofy matching outfits and “entertained” that’s really it. Kingston would get back up from the Blackpool Combat Club and LAX (Santana and Ortiz). They would do Anarchy in the Arena and Blood n Guts. The feud had strong moments with Kingston walking down the ramp during AitA, blood on his face, a cold dead stare, and a canister of gasoline and Kingston and Co. winning the BnG match.
Tumblr media
However it would have the stankest, wettest fart of an ending where Jericho and Kingston would have an abysmal barb wire match that saw Jericho winning with botches a plenty. Kingston would go on to get in a backstage altercation with Sammy Guevara who provoked him. He was in the wrong to get physical with someone who is an aggravating little turd, and he would tell you that himself. A suspension would follow and Kingston gave a half sincere apology on the short lived AEW reality tv show to which I do not care enough to look up the name.
This is what feuding with Jericho does to an M. F.
Kingston is not the only victim I saw fall to Jericho, Daniel Garcia is another name that comes to mind. Garcia was the young blood of the JAS. Originally under the tutelage of 2.0 and then absorbed into the JAS. He’s a gifted technical wrestler, but was a SANADA type, who did not really have any personality but was good at the graps. The goal, at least what we the viewers assumed was the goal, was to make Garcia a new bright star. He became the center of the JAS vs BCC feud, with Danielson wanting him to join their stable as he saw the potential in him. Garcia would get a clean win over Dragon and even went after the ROH Pure Title. The Dynamite where he challenged for the belt saw him get a special entrance coming out to DR BIRDS by Westside Gunn (the Jack Nicholson of Wrestling [thanks Olly!]).
youtube
This was in his hometown, and he got the victory, this should’ve been his star making moment. Until the swerve happened. What we thought was going to be him breaking away from Jericho he would continue to be his underling, he lost the belt back to Wheeler Yuta, his momentum came to a screeching halt, but hey at least he dances funny now! Garcia has been mostly another guy with a dumb gimmick that makes him meme worthy. This misusage can be pointed at Jericho, but Tony Khan is equally as guilty.
Jericho would also go on to win the ROH World Title. Weirdly, he would have straightforward clean wins over previous ROH champions/regulars and one Tomohiro Ishii. Among these matches Jericho would have another worst match of the year contender with Colt Cabana. One that is meant for the boys.
Tumblr media
A rib directed to a extremely disgruntled CM Punk. To be fair, Cabana was wearing the wrong socks which messed up his flow (be patient he’s only been wrestling for a few measly decades) but for Jericho what was his excuse? Jericho would get a “win” over Danielson, Castagnoli, and Guevara at Full Gear (140,000 buys) but then unceremoniously lose it at ROH Final Battle (25,400 buys hm wonder why he would drop it on such a low buyrate) to the guy he beat for it rather than put over someone new. Going by Cagematch Jericho would only lose 4 singles matches. Sure you want to keep someone like Jericho strong, especially since he's a former world champion. However, that number is insanely protective of a 53 year old guy who’s at the tail end of his career.
Jericho would try to make up for this, spending 2023 losing more than winning. It was not great.
Right after losing the ROH belt, Jericho would put over an unknown Action Andretti in a shocking upset.
Tumblr media
Action Andretti in 2023 is 10-16 and most of his matches are in ROH. Ricky Starks would have an amazing showing in his world title match, and to follow that up he would have to do his time with Jericho. He would beat Jericho on his first encounter and then go on to beat him once again at Revolution. It felt like a waste of time, the matches were not spectacular, Ricky was going downhill and thankfully Collision would save his heat, but there’s strong rumors regarding his departure for the WWE.
His next victim was Adam Cole, and Keith Lee who already struggles to get on booked on TV had to lay down for Jericho to sell this program. Jericho would team up with (read: try to get in on Saraya’s heel turn heat) The Outcasts to beat up Britt Baker to give Cole some character motivation.
Tumblr media
The segment where The Outcasts and JAS hate-crimed Baker and Cole was strange to me, because the JAS have two female wrestlers in their ranks. It is as if Jericho simply forgot about them. To give Cole and Jericho’s matchup more juice, TK brought in Sabu and the match was made an unsanctioned match (but was aired on PPV?). The match was bad, and the feud forgotten. Luckily for Cole, he is so over that he moved onto to have one of the best programs with MJF.
Following this Jericho would face off against Sting for a mini feud, but the Jericho Rub could not harm Sting because he is Sting. Simple As.
Enter Don Callis. He betrayed Kenny Omega during the BCC vs Elite Feud and replaced him with Takeshita as the wrestler he would be the personal manager to. He became the most hated heel in the company and having personally sat in the crowd where he had his first town hall as a heel, I can confirm the boos were deafening. Callis would then reach out to Jericho to join the Don Callis Family faction and Jericho was going to join. Jericho would team up with Takeshita and cheat to beat Guevara and Garcia. This would lead to the break up of the JAS, where all members sans Jericho and Guevara would continue to team with each other almost like they just became the *AS.
youtube
Then Callis saw his cronies give a beat down on Jericho, which I must applaud Jericho’s ability to find himself working with the most over acts in the company, he always finds a way to involve himself. Hell he even pitched a program with a returning CM Punk which I no do not doubt would have been the worst wrestling match ever put on American broadcasting! Jericho is a shark and if there’s blood in the water he will find it. Jericho joined the Elite vs Callis feud, and even faced a Will Ospreay at All In. The build to this match was baffling. Ospreay is practically a heelish face in NJPW. He was the face in the match against Kenny at Wrestle Kingdom, and mostly works face. However he’s heel in AEW. Sure he worked heel vs Kenny at Forbidden Door since Canada, but the build to All In saw him be a heel. Then at All In he’s a face since London! What is going on! Jericho just turned face! Now he’s doing heel tactics and even said at the aftermath Dynamite he should have cheated??? Who wrote this?? At least Ospreay went back to NJPW and is finishing up his run there.
Jericho and Sammy would have tension teasing some kind of split. Now before I go any further, I must preface: I do not like Sammy Guevara. He is an overused, overexposed, mishandled and misbooked worker who represents zero IQ wrestling psychology. He’s a terrible promo and has terrible character work. He has attempted to turn face only to go back to heel because when he tries cutting a face promo and you can hear the simultaneous clicks of remote buttons to change it to Family Feud.
Tumblr media
Having said that, even I thought it was egregious for Jericho to beat Sammy. How does one man spend all year losing draw the line at his understudy? Guevara suffered a concussion during this Jericho and Kenny vs Don Callis, and is out on paternity leave. Who knows when Jericho will do him right, perhaps never.
Jericho and Kenny have been teaming, they beat the Young Bucks for their Title Contendership and are now facing Ricky Starks and Big Bill for the Tag Team Championship. Starks and Bill have been giving beatdowns to Kenny and Jericho to build for the match. They even had the worst, and I mean this with all my heart, the worst in ring promo battle I have ever seen. Awful jokes, no selling insults, and doubling down on lines that did not land with the crowd. The look on Kenny’s face screams that he is checked out.
Tumblr media
However, as of writing this, Kenny is now out on injury for an indefinite amount of time. Jericho is now lost in the wind and I imagine both Starks and Bill are relieved.
Jericho has proven this past year to not be any benefit to anyone he works with. He finds out who is the most over and tries to get in on their overness despite it making sense. All of his programs seem slapped together, as if Tony allows him to plan out his angles without any pushing back. I imagine he pitches these to guys who may want to have the opportunity to work with someone with decades of experience, but they do not see through him as a clout vampire. The goal of Jericho is how can I keep myself on TV, he has DEMO GOD plastered on himself for crying out loud!
Tumblr media
His character is supposed to be an aging rockstar who desperately clinging on for dear life, but it does not help when that is just who he is in real life. With Kenny out, what is next for Jericho? Hopefully retirement.
Tumblr media
Ah crap how did this get here how do I delete pictures.

"Oh, you wanted the real Punk, you wanted Pipebomb Punk? Well, you got it, you got your pipebomb, your muffingate" [chuckles in the crowd] "and it was more real than anything I ever said up on stage in the WWE. You got the real Punk, Max, and just like y'all" [Punk gestures at the crowd] "you just couldn't handle it." [some boos] "No, I know this is difficult for all of us, but stay with me here, I have something to show you people.” [Punk takes out his phone] “My conversation history with Maxwell Jacob Friedman.” [MJF makes a dash for the phone but is held back by FTR, Punk is visibly amused now]
“Monday, September 5th 2022, the night I punched Matt Jackson in the face." [crowd gasps] "Message from Maxwell Jacob Friedman, three in the morning: Are you okay?" [nervous giggles in the crowd] "Monday, September 5th, the same day, 5 pm: You stupid old man, why didn't you just keep quiet, you're ruining everything." [some cheers] "Monday, September 12th, 10 pm: You can call me if you want to talk." [faint laughter] "Tuesday, September 13th, 1 am, that's three hours later: Please respond." [loud laughter] "Tuesday, September 13th, 2 am, that’s an hour later: I hate you. Thursday, October 20th: I hate you so much. Sunday, November the 19th: I did it. I’m the champ. I wish I could have taken the belt off you." [mixed crowd reaction] "Saturday, December 25th, Christmas Day: Merry Christmas, Punk. I hope you have a lovely day and the arm is healing alright. See you soon? Christmas tree emoji, menorah emoji, red heart emoji." [devastating silence, cut to Max’s mortified face]
"Y'all wanna know how many messages I have sent to Max in those fifteen weeks between my little backstage altercation and Christmas Day? Zero. Because I don't care about you, Max, you are nothing to me, you're not even a blip on my radar. You can scratch at my door, you can talk shit about me on twitter, you can quote my promos all day, copy my mannerism, copy the way I talk and walk, all in a desperate attempt to get my attention, but I'm still just gonna leave you on read." [crowd erupts into laughter, MJF is fuming]
"Max, I once called you a less famous Miz, and I have to apologize for that. Truth is, you are nothing but a less famous CM Punk and now that the real CM Punk is back, the only thing that's giving you any relevance at all in this company, in this whole damn business, is the fact that you stole this belt from Jon Moxley, who shouldn't have been wearing it in the first place, because I am the rightful AEW World Champion. PG Punk is dead, but I am here and I'm old and I'm hurt and I'm tired of working with you." [crowd cheers]
"And, Max, for your own good, I suggest you spend more time wrestling in the ring, and less time trying to get the attention of older men, because when you get that attention, this Sunday, November 13th, Chicago, Illinois at the Full Gear pay-per-view, you won't be able to handle it."
