Fanbinding: Dirt and Ashes, or: The One-and-a-Half Body Problem by @tozettastone
Tumblr media
In which Sakura carries half of Hidan across two countries, leaving a trail of blood, bodies, and other people's legs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made this book for @aetherseer as part of an exchange we did, and I had such a great time making it. I saw this fic on their list and remembered reading it ages ago and was like I CAN DO SOMETHING WITH THAT! and here it is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cover is Colibri bookcloth, handpainted with acrylic (all of the lettering is freehand- easy when the font you choose is irregular). @pleasantboatpress suggested including a quote on the spine since the title wasn't working there, so I got to add the absolutely banger quote from this fic "Your pain is sacred. Your suffering is beautiful."
For the edges, I used fluid graphite and polished and waxed them. On the endbands I used my Japanese silk thread for the first time (its a dream tbh).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the typeset, I leaned in hard on the blood sacrifice aesthetic, creating the Jashinist symbol for the front page (and also the cover) and using a font aptly called "Bloody Scratch." You can't see them here but for paragraph breaks there are little scythe.
@tozettastone, if you would like a copy I would be happy to make you one!! (I think my ask to you got eaten, feel free to dm).

Sept 2023, bookbinding of The Wine-Dark Sea by @moorishflower.
Marbled paper by @aetherseer. Design notes under the cut. Fic link in reblogs.
Design notes: The codex design was largely driven by the red and black marbled paper handmade by Æthereal Press and the work's theme of embracing darkness, both the literal darkness of the ocean and space and figurative darkness of what is feared and unknown. Aether generously gave me scraps of the paper I used here for both the cover and endpapers, which reminded me immediately and compellingly of blood in black water, so of course I made an edgy tiny book with it. Some of my friends also gave the opinion the cover looks like stylized wounds, which is again quite appropriate for the fic.
Fun new stuff I tried on this one:
stitched a strip of scrap cloth for faux endbands (looks good)
stenciled title (good try, bad choice of paint)
layered bookcloth design (excellent, much easier than expected)
Octopus illustrations are Octopus macropus (title page) and Octopus vulgaris (epilogue) by Comingio Merculiano in the 1896 monograph Cefalopodi viventi nel Golfo di Napoli (sistematica) by Jatta Guiseppe, accessed via Wikimedia Commons.
Materials: Covers use rayon Italian bookcloth, archival bookboard, marbled paper, cardboard scrap, handmade paper, pH-neutral PVA, machine cut-stencil and acrylic paint. Laser printed text on archival paper; bound with 25/3 linen thread, 100% beeswax, cotton scrap, and cotton cheesecloth mull.

Two Katherine Addison short stories, bound as minis for @mythrilthread as part of a personal little trade. I received the copy of Tumblr stories in addition to a glow-in-the dark mini so I clearly made out like a bandit on this swap. Not to mention, @mythrilthread also bound my typeset for the @renegadepublishing Tiny Book Bang this summer 💅 I think you could officially call me a collector at this point....
And yes, I do believe those papers are from the @aetherseer gift pack. And that's a scrap of some Duo I nabbed during @renegadepublishing meetup.

Happy Fanfic Writers' Appreciation Day 2023! Or as we've been calling it, FFWAD.
I participated again this year in @renegadepublishing's FFWAD challenge, to make and send a book to an author as a gesture of love and appreciation.
Last year, it was the very first bound fic I'd shared publicly. This year, I combined FFWAD with Renegade's Tiny Book Bang event, and sent tiny books to an author! How tin, you ask? A few more pics for scale are coming.
For the Tiny Book Bang, I typeset three fic, and signed up to bind one typeset for someone else. Hilariously, the book I bound for the typesetter AND one of my own typesets were both MDZS fic by the same author, so Nirejseki got a copy of Tigers, a collection of short about "what if what the Nies meant by qi deviation was... turning into a tiger?" typeset by the fantastic @kulapti, and I also snuck in a tiny copy of Good Neighbors, a fic about the Nie clan's relationship with the Fae.
Onwards to pictures!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really loved the chance to riff hard on the tiger theme. Three copies, one for me, one for the typesetter, one for the author. The covers are Duo book cloth in Eruption, some Japanese paper of indeterminate origin (I keep saying that because I have a scrap pack I bought years before I started binding and don't remember what any of it is), and marbled paper from @aetherseer, who is exceedingly generous with her hand-marbled scraps.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The inside is gorgeous too! This is @kulapti's work, and I love the title page SO very much.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can see where I'm holding it open here that it's pretty small. But not as tiny as...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one is JUST LITTLE. Book cloth scraps and chiyogami paper for the cover, and stencilling the spine involved a lot more swearing than usual. I did the cover lettering on both books with a Cricut stencil and paint. Still can't believe the tiny letters turned out on Good Neighbors! Some progress pics to show the scale...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Happy Fanfic Writers' Appreciation Day, Nirejseki! Keep doing what you do!

Binderary week 1 book 1! This is Until My Feet Bleed and My Heart Aches, a bangin' Victuuri fic by @kazliin.
This book was SO fun to make, because it's made with the work and materials of several people! All my love to @ziezie13 for sharing her typeset, which is drop-dead GORGEOUS <3 My favorite parts are the handwritten titles, the QR codes which link to recordings of the program music during certain scenes, and the mock-ups of the in-universe AO3 pages for Victor and Yuuri, which are labeled as "Figure Skating RPF." Genius!
The beautiful cover paper (which reminds me so much of an ice skating rink, so I just had to use it for this fic!) was a gift from either @humanalias or @aetherseer at Havencon 2022 (ACK I'm so sorry I can't remember - so many supplies were traded and gifted that fateful weekend! I didn't realize how important I would think it a year later to document who I got what from, but something for me to keep in mind at this year's Renegade retreat, mayhaps...and also now I know to pack as much paper as I can, to return to favor :3). So thank you so much to everyone who made this book possible! <333
ALSO y'all should absolutely check out Zie's copy here, which is printed on 11"x 17" sheets of paper, so each page is 8.5" x 11". In other words it's DOUBLE the size of my copy, which is already pretty chonky. She made it HUGE--it's hard to tell from the linked pics--but it's literally over 4.5 pounds of pure book (@simply-sithel said it best: you feel like an epic wizard holding it!)

Fanbinding: Remedial Jedi Theology by @marbleglove
Tumblr media
Remedial Jedi Theology is a lovely story that focuses on Obi-Wan teaching Anakin about the tenets of their faith, and I really enjoyed this focus. From the summary of the fic:
Let us consider the fact that the Jedi Order is a monastic religious organization based out of a temple, with five basic tenets of faith.
With that as part of my guiding design principles, I decided to work on a concept I'd been toying with and prepping for a while: incorporating architectural design elements from various media representations of Jedi Temples into the cover design of the book.
Tumblr media
The corners of this border framing are drawn from screenshots of a temple from one of the SW's video games (helpfully taken for by by @thearchitectlens!)
Tumblr media
I drew the filigree pattern, scanned it into Affinity Designer, and cleaned it up for use. I made a connecting border then within the program based on some of the columns seen here and elsewhere. I'm very happy with how it turned out!
Tumblr media
Endpapers are sage marbled lokta, and cover cloth is green apple Colibri.
@aetherseer did a lovely typeset for this fic as part of @renegadepublishing's annual exchange, which I was lucky to use!

Bookbindings of Rare the man that’ll hold to faith by Fahye, July 2023.
Another set from the Renegade Bindery Tiny Books Bang! Text: Rare the man that’ll hold faith (MDZS wangxian Green Knight AU) by @fahye Typesetting: @teleportbooks
————- More info under the cut
Three similar versions of Rare the man that’ll hold to faith by Fahye, typeset by EHyde, bound by myself! Two of these bindings have endpapers of handmade marbled paper by Æthereal Press (thanks @aetherseer <3).
I was so excited to get this fantastic typeset, in which EHyde used a number of historical decorations from Klemscott Press on the title page and section dividers. I cannot get over all the cool decorative bits in this typeset you guys. Just look at that title page!! I had so much fun reading this fic in hard copy and giggling over all the little teeny leaves and fancy letters.
I chose to use one of the smaller decorative grape vine designs for the cover, since I have not had good luck using the cricut or hand-writing on title letters small enough for these spines. I think it looks pretty neat :D
Decisions were made: I like using small books to try out new techniques, and for these I tried out stitching in the endpapers. That was uhh not the greatest idea for something I intended to give away tbh, but I think the results still look alright. This endpaper style is extremely uncommon in recently published books, though one might find it in fancy editions of books made around a hundred years ago. I think it’s pretty cool and I like that it can subtly emphasize a handmande book being constructed differently from most of what bookstores can sell! I should have paid closer attention to matching my tapes and the lining of my covers. The gapping is a cosmetic problem more than a structural problem, and they should be quite sturdy, though I do wish I had been able to line these up better.
Materials: Laser printed text on archival paper, letter size folded sextodecimo; cotton thread and beeswax stitching with archival paper scrap for reinforcement; the case is scrabooking paper and bookcloth, archival PVA and bookboard, and metallic cover decoration made of heat-transfer vinyl. Endpapers are either archival scrapbooking paper or handmade marbled paper with some shimmery accents. Cotton scrap faux-endbands and unknown scrap ribbon for the bookmarks.

A Long Way by betts [link]
Bound for the @renegadepublishing Tiny Book Bang. Typeset by indoor cat press, who has also bound it themselves in delicious sunshine duo with a rich red edge coloring.
Sometimes things just come together well, and for me this is such a case- I really like how it turned out. It helped that I know Game of Thrones and happen to have a lot of red and gold supplies on hand. Perfect scrap of red leather with an ideal scrap of fancy paper (thanks again, @aetherseer). Buff 'n rub wax treatment of the edges and in a stroke of luck (and several strokes of the hammer) the title fit perfectly on the fore edge. Not the usual place one puts it, but I'm working with a limited toolset. Highlight of the whole project- reading it.

(I have so much help with all of this. SO MUCH.)
I knew last week would get busy with other commitments! I printed two more typesets, trimmed three more text blocks, and failed at making a tiny book during Six’s tiny book speedrun workshop! (I think I’ve figured out where I failed in the page-folding, it’s fine, and I’m going to give it another shot. (TINY BOOKS SO SMOL AND CUTE! I just might have trawled through my bookmarks looking for 3-5K book to go into tiny books.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m doing hand-sewn headbands, because I find it relaxing, except for one book that’s skinny enough to just be too fiddly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There has been some cloth and paper selection.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made wheat paste! And book covers!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And assembled books, and stencilled the covers and spines!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two books done, twelve more in progress. I'll share final pictures of everything once the month is up. I need to print at least one more to hit my goal of fifteen case-bound for the month.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The weekend brought a marbling demo to follow up on last weekend’s Q&A with @aetherseer and co-conspirator. Not as many threats to eat the marbling supplies this time, @renegadepublishing peeps, you must have had more snacks in advance.
